Funeral services for Norwood Fred Dabelgott, 58, of Markham will be held 2 pm Thursday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Howard Harper and the Rev. Joe Ramsey officiating.  Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Mr. Dabelgott was born Sept 8, 1930, in Beasley, Texas and died April 4, 1989, at Memorial Southwest Hospital, Houston.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Markham.

Survivors include his wife, Henrietta Lester Dabelgott of Markham; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debora and Michael Thelen of Sugarland and Cynthia and Paul Britt of Richmond; mother, Ella Puckett of Bay City; two sisters, Marquerite Penland of Bay City and Gloria Puckett of Artesia, N. M.; a brother, Allen Dabelgott of Markham; three grandchildren, Adam and Monica Thelen and Sarah Britt.

In lieu of the usual donations, contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Funeral services for F. W. Daehne Sr., 79, of Bay City were scheduled for 10 am today at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Charles Sonnier officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck.

A rosary was said at 8 pm Sunday at Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Mr. Daehne was born June 18, 1907, in West, Texas to Dr. F. G. and Annie Lobay Daehne and died May 9, 1987, at Matagorda General Hospital.

He was the owner of Daehne Drug Store until he retired in 1968.

He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Texas Pharmaceutical Association, past member of the Lions Club, Old Timers Baseball Association and was inducted into St. Mary’s Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife, Edna Daehne of Bay City; a son, F. W. Daehne Jr. of Riverdale Ga.; three daughters, Kitty Cashion of Woodbury, Ga., Karen Letsch of Racine, Wis., and Doris Reinhart of New Braunfels; a sister, Mrs. L. G. Garbade of Flatonia; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers include Sam Matthes, Ray Kacal, Lloyd Ryman, Gus Svatek, Ed Kana and Dan Stavena.

Services are under the direction of Dick R. Elkins, Bay City Funeral Home.

Funeral services for James Edward Dannelley, 62, of Van Vleck, were held at 11 am Tuesday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Hardaway officiating.  Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck.

Mr. Dannelley was born Dec. 19, 1927, in Florida to Dennis H. and Pearlie Lucille Newman Dannelley and died Dec. 22, 1989, in Brazoria.

He was a member of the Baptist church and a resident of Van Vleck for 30 years. Mr. Dannelley was a veteran of WWII and stood as a member of Masonic Lodge 865, AF and AM in Bay City.

Survivors include his wife, Billie Sue Cochran Dannelley, of Van Vleck; his mother, Pearlie Lucille Dannelley, of Brazoria; and a brother, Harold Lloyd Dannelley, of New Caney.

Arrangements are with Taylor Funeral Home, Bay City.

Morton Keefer Davis

Morton Keefer Davis, a long time Bay City businessman and former building official with the City of Bay City died Nov. 2 at Matagorda General Hospital following a short illness. He was born on December 19, 1919 in Blessing, Texas to parents Charlie Thomas and Virgil Tolleson Davis.

He grew up in the Blessing and Bay City area and in the early 1930s, left home to work in the Civilian Conservation Corps in New Mexico. Around 1936, he returned home and worked as a movie projectionist and telephone line repairman in the Boling and Bay City areas.

In 1939 he decided to join the Army and was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He was serving there when the Japanese attacked on December 7, 1941 and he continued his military service until 1945.

In 1944, while on furlough, he married Mary Hunnicutt of Bay City, whom he had met before the war. As part of his military duty he learned to work on and service electrical power lines.

After the war, he returned to Bay City and went to work for Wolfarth and Bowman Electrical Company. There he met Carl Oates and in 1953 the two of them started Oates-Keefer Electrical Company which served the people of Matagorda County with electrical service and repairs until he sold his share of the business following the death of Mary in 1977.

He was active in community services including membership in the local VFW Post and as an educator, teaching electrical services with the community education system. Being a master electrician, in 1978 he took the job of electrical inspector for the City of Bay City and eventually became the chief building official for the city.

While working at city hall, he met the former Carolyn Ryman and they were married on May 11, 1987.

He is survived by: his wife Carolyn of Bay City, son and daughter-in-law, LTC (RET) Thomas and Otti Davis of Wimberly, Texas; daughter Barbara Hambright of Marshall, Texas; brother and sister-in-law Thomas and Mildred Davis of Danbury, Texas; sister and brother-in-law Hilma and Bob Breen of Grand Rapids, Michigan; sisters Margurite Utley of South Lake, Texas, and Bobbie Jean Phillips of Freeport, Texas; and grandson and his wife, Stuart and Jennie Davis of Ann Arbor Michigan. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Pearl Ryman and brother-in-law Lloyd Ryman.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary, and a daughter, Bonnie K. Davis. Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. at the Bay City Funeral Home Chapel with Deacon Guadalupe Rodriguez officiating. Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Pallbearers were Charles Breen, Russell Breen, Kenneth Davis, Stewart Davis, Javier Rodriguez, Duane Ryman, Johnny Ryman, and James Smith.

Funeral services for Lewis Vernon Dean, 54, of Bay City are scheduled for 10 am Friday at the Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Sonnier officiating. Interment will take place in the Roselawn Cemetery in Van Vleck.

A rosary for Mr. Dean will be said at 7 pm Thursday with the Rev. Tom Ess officiating.

Dean was born April 24, 1933, in Kellyville, Okla. To Campbell Berry and Agnes Mae Callicut Dean, and died March 10, 1987, at Matagorda General Hospital.

A resident of Bay City for 23 years, Dean was a member of the board of the Matagorda County Fair Association.

He is survived by: his wife, Angie Dean of Bay City; mother, Agnes Dean of Sapulpa, Okla.; daughter, Theresa Ann Dean of Bay City; son, Berry Lewis Dean of Bay City; sisters, Wanda Morgan and Jerlene Woods, both of Sapulpa, Okla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be: Clyde Ashcraft, Jimmy Stewart, Jim Gann, Dan Pustka, Billy Brown and Ralph Seidel.

Mary Ottis Dietrich, 98 of Bay City, passed away Sunday, October 22, 2000, in Bay City. She was born Jan. 5, 1902, in Okarche, Okla. to Joseph Ottis and Mary Janssen Ottis.

She was a lifelong resident of Matagorda County and was a retired sales clerk, having worked in various apparel stores around the square. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and a member of the Holy Cross Altar Society.

She is survivied by: daughter, Audrey Nini and husband Wallace of Bay City; son, Hadden Dietrich and wife Dorothy of Bay City; grandchildren, Hadden Dietrich, Jr. and wife Kathy of Katy, and Cole Dietrich of Houston; great-granddaughter, Shelby Dietrich, and great grandson Zachary Dietrich, both of Katy; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Mary Janssen Ottis; three brothers and two sisters.

The rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. Casey Jarzombek officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. Pallbearers will be Hadden Dietrich, Jr., Cole Dietrich, Zachary Dietrich, Harold Ottis, Thomas Ottis, and Jon Abshier.

John A. Drapela

John A. Drapela passed away on December 24, 1970. He was a dispatcher for the Matagorda Sheriff’s Dept. and a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

He is survived by widow, Mrs. Margaret Drapela of Bay City, and two sons, Jack J. of Houston and Ned E. of Bay City.  Also three daughters: Mrs. Eddie G. Janise of Wadsworth; Mrs. Mitchel Rainey of Amarillo, and Miss Mary Olive Drapela.

There are also four sisters: Mrs. Charles Drastata of New Taton; Mrs. John Lala of Victoria; Mrs. William Ripple of El Campo, and Mrs. Bill Gray of Ft. Stockton; six grandchildren and a number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.  Rosary was said on Sat, Dec. 26 at the Bay City Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend C. J. Martin.  Mass and funeral services were held on Sun., Dec. 27 at 2:30 pm with the Reverends C. J. Martin and R. J. Jeffery officiating.  Interment was in Roselawn Memorial Park. 

Pallbearers were Charles Maurer, Lloyd Ryman, Louis Douget, Johnny Rother Jr., Joe Vacek and Harris Janise Jr. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Matagorda County Sheriff’s Dept.

Funeral arrangements were made through Bay City Funeral Home under the direction of Dick R. Elkins.

Margaret Elizabeth Collins Drapela

Margaret Elizabeth Collins Drapela, 89, of Bay City, “stopped kicking,” or passed away Sunday, January 11, 2004, in Bay City.

She was born in Houston, Texas, on March 23, 1914 to parents John Bernard and Harriet Elizabeth Talley Collins.

She married John A. Drapela on February 19, 1936 and they moved to the Bay City area in 1951. She was an active member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and served on the Alter Society there for many years.

She is preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; a grandson, Matt Dale Rainey; and a son-in-law, Eddie Janise, Sr.

She is survived by: her five children, Harriet Janise of Wadsworth, Margaret Adele and Mickey Rainey of Needville, Jack Drapela of Houston, Ned and Doris Drapela of Wharton, and Mary Olive Drapela of Houston; eight grandsons, Eddie, Jr. and Jennifer Janise, Nathan and Pam Janise, Gary Janise, Mitch Rainey and Dan Didonato, Mark and Rhonda Rainey, Mike and Marni Rainey, Ned, Jr. and Carol Drapela, and John Drapela; and 10 great-grandchildren.

There will be a wake at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 14, 2004, at Bay City Funeral Home Chapel.

A funeral mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 15, 2004 at Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. The family asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice.

Services are under the direction of Bay City Funeral Home.

A Rosary Service for William O. “Willie” Dry, 73, of Bay City will be recited at 6 pm Sunday, May 23, 1999 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 10 am Monday at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Rev. Casey Jarzombek officiating.  Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck. 

Mr. Dry died, May 20, at Park Plaza Hospital in Houston.  He was born March 23, 1926 in Rosenberg to the late Lige and Martha Buzek Dry.

He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, a resident of Bay City since 1937, a veteran of WWII, serving in the U. S. Navy and a member of V.F.W. Post No, 2438.

Mr. Dry is survived by his wife, Lillian V. Dry of Bay City; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Dianne Dry of Sweeny; grandchildren, Shelley Beth Dry of Bay City, Wendy Leigh Dry of Victoria, Troy James Dry of Victoria, Troy James Dry of Victoria, and Jacob Daniel of Sweeny; and aunt Jane Kucera of Fairchild. Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City.

Mark Edward Dykes, 52, of Sugar Valley passed away July 20, 2007.

He was born August 2, 1954 in Bay City, Texas to Gene and Reta Dykes. He was a graduate of Van Vleck High School.

Survivors include his father: Gene Dykes of Sugar Valley; Brothers and sisters-in-law; Bill and Mary Dykes of Bay City, Curtis and Judy Dykes and Jeff and Gina Dykes of Sugar Valley; Nephews; Travis, Matthew, and Michael Dykes; Nieces; Beth Chapman and husband Ron, and Sadie Dykes; and a great nephew: Keith Chapman.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Reta.

Special thanks to Pat Matthes and the hospice nurses for their support and care.

Memorials in Mark’s name can be made to Hospice Support Care of El Campo or a charity of your choice.

Funeral services for Shelton R. “Jimmy” Dykes, 74, of Bay City, will be held at 2 pm Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Frank Seaman officiating.  Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck.

Mr. Dykes was born April 1, 1910, in Broxton, GA., and died March 16, 1985, at Matagorda General Hospital.

He moved to Bay City in 1934 where he became a rice farmer and farmed for the next 30 years.  In 1955 he was voted outstanding rice farmer, the second farmer to receive this honor. 

He served as a volunteer fireman for 25 years, city councilman for four years and was resident of the Matagorda County Rice Farmers Co-op.  He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and elder and sang in the choir for many years.  He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club.

Survivors include his wife, Theola Dykes of Bay City; a son, Jim R. Dykes of Orange, Calif.; a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Tomoka Dykes of Saudi Arabia; a daughter, Carol Kretschmar of Bay City; a sister, Sadie Teague of Chicago; four brothers, Ivy Dykes of Florida; Clyde Dykes of Georgia; and I. Z. and Gene Dykes of Bay City; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers include Hart Soli, Jimmy Craft, Robert Smith, Billy Dykes, Curtis Dykes and Peter Summers.  Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Bay City Volunteer Fire Department.

Funeral services for Theola Dykes will be held Saturday, April 18 at 10 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Giddings. Visitation will be at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home on Friday at noon and at 6 p.m. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 22 in Bay City.

Theola Dykes celebrated life for 96 years. She was born February 9, 1913 in Crosby, Texas to Will and Lovella Dudley. After graduation from Reagan High School in 1932, she married the elegant Jimmy Shelton Dykes, beginning 53 years of a wonderful marriage.

Theola leaves behind one son, Donald Dykes, a daughter, Carol Kay, and four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Theola was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, one grand daughter, her husband, Jimmy Dykes and a son, Jimmy Ray Dykes.

Theola was a life long Presbyterian, as a member of First Presbyterian Church in Bay City for over 40 years and then FPC, Giddings on her move to Giddings in 1997. She was very active in her church work, teaching Sunday School and Bible Study classes. She was also a volunteer for 17 years in the beauty salon at Bay Villa Nursing Home. For 15 years she was the office manager for Dr. Russell Mathis, running the close knit Dental group.

The family would like to thank Hospice Brazos Valley and the Jefferson Place Assisted Living Staff for all their love and service.

BAY CITY - Evelyn Adaline Emanuel, 84, of Bay City, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002.

She was born March 8, 1918, in Fisher, La., to the late William and Mary Missouri Norris Howard. She was a retired certified braelist with the Board of Education in Memphis, Tenn. and a Baptist.

Survivors: daughters, Faye Carter and Brenda Lee Touchton, both of Sargent; sister, Iva Blanche Forbes of Catulla, Ga.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Preceded in death by: parents; and brothers, Ernest Howard and Ray Howard.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. today at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery, the Rev. Jim Howard officiating. Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, Bay City, 979-245-4613.
