Funeral services for Thelma Baker, 89, of Bay City will be held 11 am Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Bay City with the Rev. Jim Welch officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

 

Mrs. Baker was born June 19, 1901 in Thrifty, Brown County, Texas and died Feb. 26, 1991, at Matagorda General Hospital.

 

She was born to early pioneer parents, Jim and Martha Mullins Cross. She was the youngest of 10 children and the last survivor of that early Texas family. She had been a resident of Bay City for 24 years.

 

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bay City and the Gleaners Sunday School Class. She also had been an active member of the Pink Ladies organization at Matagorda General Hospital.  Before moving to Bay City, she served as a Blue Bird Circle Volunteer of the Methodist Hospital in Houston.

 

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Jim Howze and her husband Bill Howze, of Bay City; three granddaughters, Kim Howze Marceaux and her husband, Brent, of Bay City, Connie Howze Stall and her husband, Bill, of Austin, and Martha Morrow Petersen and her husband Jim, of San Marcos; a grandson, Michael Bat Morrow and his wife, Diane, of Houston; and four great-grandchildren.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Poston Baker, a daughter, Sue Baker Morrow, and a grandson, Larry Baker Morrow.

 

Pallbearer include Clyde Workman, Pete Harang, Raymond Stridde, Bobby Kimball, Bill Thompson and Pat Boepple.

 

Dr. Joseph Valloppillil will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

James Paul “Jake” Bledsoe

James Paul “Jake” Bledsoe, 63, of Van Vleck died March 24, 2003 at Kindred Hospital in Houston. He was born January 12, 1940 in Iraan, Texas to the late Tonnie Paul and Lee Lucille Johnson Bledsoe.

Jake was a resident of Matagorda County for the past 60 years, and a resident of Van Vleck the past 30 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Van Vleck.

Survivors include: wife, Ann Henderson Bledsoe of Van Vleck; daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly Rene’ and Kelly Matchett of Van Vleck; brother and sister-in-law, Maurice and Bonnie Bledsoe of Lafayette, Louisiana; and two granddaughters, Tabitha Renee and Michelle Ann Matchett both of Van Vleck.

Jake was preceded in death by his brother William A. “Bill’ Bledsoe.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2003, at the First United Methodist Church of Van Vleck with the Reverends Tom Morgan and Linda Maxey officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Gary, Raleigh, and Maurice Bledsoe, Jr., Lanny and Lloyd Henderson, Heath Darby, Bryan McDonald and Bill Zizelmann. Honorary pallbearers will be Mitchell Richmond, Clint Burchfield, Loren, Bill, Jack, and Lester W. Henderson, Jeff Darby, Dennis Naiser, Lance Salas, and Neil Gibson.

Phyllis Jane Tobey Carr, 80, passed away Monday, September 11, 2006 at her home in Bay City.

She was born January 26, 1926 in Lakewood, Ohio to the late Dayton and Elva Tobey. Phyllis was a life long resident of Bay City, a Member of The First United Methodist Church, devoted volunteer for The Crisis Center, an avid Bingo and Bridge player, and The Ultimate Astros Fan.

She is survived by: her daughter, Victoria R. Carr of Bay City; sisters, Marilyn Zednik of Brook Park, Ohio, and Pat Kurtz and husband Wally of Gross Point Woods, Mississippi; sister-in-law, Lilly Carr of Bay City; grandchildren, David and Allison Rohan of Bay City; special friend, Joslyn Crump of Bay City; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Carr was preceded in death by: her husband, F. Ray Carr; brother-in-law, Lee K. Carr; beloved niece, Nancy Zednik Ashcraft; and beloved nephew, Sidney L. Carr.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, September 15, 2006 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Pauline Harvey officiating.

Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Funeral services will be held for Francis Ray Carr, 65, of Bay City, 10 am Tuesday at Taylor Brothers Chapel. Officiating at the services will be Rev. LeRoy Stanton.  Carr died March 13, 1982 at Hermann Hospital in Houston after a lengthy illness. 

Survivors include wife, Mrs. Phyllis J. Carr of Bay City; daughter Victoria Ray Carr of Bay City; brother, Lee Kirk Carr of Bay City; nephews, Dr. Joseph B. Lawhon, Kirk, Michael Ray and Sidney L. Carr of Bay City.

Carr was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a veteran of WWII and a member of the Oddfellows Lodge.

Buried will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers include Dr. Joseph B. Lawhon, Kirk, Michael Ray and Sidney L. Carr, Bill Arlitt and Walter L. Kurt.  Pallbearers include co-workers of Dow Chemical of Bay City.  Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Bay City.

Funeral services for Mr. Lee Kirk Carr, 62, of Bay City will be held 3 pm Thursday at the First United Methodist Church of Bay City with the Rev. LeRoy Stanton officiating.  Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.


Mr. Carr was born Feb 1, 1922, in Bay City and died Aug. 14, 1984, in Matagorda General Hospital.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bay City.  He was a veteran of WWII and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2438, the American Legion, Masonic Lodge, the Thunderbolt Association and the 82nd Fighter Group Association.  He is survived by his wife, Lilly R. Carr of Bay City.


Other survivors include: four sons, Joe Lawhon, Lee Kirk Carr II, Michael Ray Carr and Sidney Louis Carr, all of Bay City; and five grandchildren, Scott and Matt Lawhon and Ryan, Laura and Philip Louis Carr, all of Bay City.  Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2438.


Pallbearers will be Ed Crimmins, Frank Craft, Lester Wells, Sherwood Richers, W. E. Frazier and Gordon Lee Shaffer.

In lieu of usual contributions, donations may be made to the American Heart Fund or the American Cancer Society.

Melba Cox, 86, of Bay City died at her residence, Sunday, May 7, 2000 in Bay City. She was born Feb. 1, 1914 in Choate, Texas to the late Will and Mattie Shaw Yeater.

She grew up and attended school in Kennedy, Texas, graduating as Valedictorian of her class in 1931. Attended Texas A & I, then known as Texas College of Arts and Industries and earned her teaching certificate. She taught in a one room schoolhouse in Escondidos. She married George Owen Cox in 1936 and they lived in Kenedy and Junction, before moving to Bay City in 1952.

She is survived by: daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy and Jim Sykes of Houston and Sharon and Tom Morgan of Midland; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Jane Cox of Bay City; five grandchildren, Shannon Miller and Mark Sykes of Houston, Michelle Morgan of Arlington, Blaine Morgan of Midland, and Tonya Dehart of Franklin, Indiana; two great grandchildren, Caitlynne and Rolphie Miller of Houston.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 11, 2000 at the Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Billie Rae Denbow

Billie Rae Denbow, 74, of Sugar Valley, died December 2, 2004 at Bay Villa Nursing Center.

She was born August 4, 1930 in Alexander, Louisiana, to Isham Jackson and Bernette Grimillion Westbrook.

Mrs. Denbow was a life-long resident of Matagorda County, and a member of the Bay City Baptist Church.

She was the principal for the Bay City Christian Academy.

Survivors include: her husband of 55 years, William E. Denbow of Sugar Valley; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Dale Marshall of Bay City, and Natalie and Terry Wolfe, Jr. of West Columbia; three sons, Michael and Scott Denbow of Brazoria, Michael Shane Denbow of Denton, Texas, and Chad William Denbow of Angleton; stepmother, Vallie Rose Westbrook of Sugar Valley; sister, Betty Jane Manning of Richardson, Texas; stepsister, Carolyn Ernest of Arlington, Texas; brother, Terence Westbrook of Sugar Valley; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, and by her stepbrother, John Cole, Jr.

Funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 4, 2004, at the Bay City Baptist Church, with the Rev. H. L. Watson officiating.

Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck.

Pallbearers were Larry Lewis, Jamie Lewis, Dale Marshall, Mike Stuart, Ryan Marshall and Marvin Hawkins.

Honorary pallbearers were Terry Wolfe, Jr. Mark Lewis, and Shane Denbow.

Memorials may be made to the Bay City Christian Academy or Bay City Baptist Harvest Reepers Mission.

Edwin Franklin Holloway

Edwin Franklin Holloway, 78, of Bay City was called forth from this earth on Saturday, May 10, 2003 at his residence. He was born on June 26, 1924 in Rice, Texas to the late Earl Jefferson and Eva Bernice Rorex Holloway. He was retired from Phillips Petroleum and a lifetime resident of Bay City. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bay City, a member of the Old Ocean Masonic Lodge #1284 AF and AM and served in the United States Navy during WWII.

Survivors include: wife, Barbara Savage Stell Holloway; two daughters and a son-in-law, Ann Head of Richmond, Texas and Sue and Glenn Ashcraft of Doha, Qatar; son and daughter-in-law, Marshall and Joyce Holloway of Friendswood; three step-daughters, Eva and Bob Malina, Susie and John Hutson all of Bay City, and Becky and Paul Hulin of San Antonio, Texas; four sisters, Eutabelle Albritton of Sweeny; Lois Kalthoff and Frances Beaird both of Destin, Florida, and Carol James of Clute, Texas; brothers, Sammie Holloway of Grapeland, Texas and Bill Holloway of Ventura, California; 17 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Charlotte Holloway; sister, Elizabeth Olson; brother, Earl Robert Holloway; and granddaughter, Kimberly Kay Ashcraft.

Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev’s Bob Biser and Pauline Harvey officiating. Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck.

Pallbearers were Troy, Kory, and Drew Ashcraft, Cody and Heath Holloway, and Lynwood Pickens. Honorary pallbearers were Brian, and Stewart Hutson, and Robert and Stephen Malina.

Rites Held For Mrs. Horn, 69

 

Funeral services were held this morning in First Presbyterian Church for Mrs. Mary G. Horn, 69, who passed away Friday in Matagorda General Hospital.

 

The Rev. Dr. Tom Dyal and the Rev. Lloyd Nixon officiated with interment following in Roselawn Cemetery.

 

Survivors include her husband John; a son, Leslie Adams of Bay City; and three grandchildren, Leslie V.  Adams, Martha Annette Blackwell and Mary Inez Adams, all of Bay City. She also leaves three great-grandchildren.

 

Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Pete Graff of Palacios, Mrs. C. L. Lindgren of Sycamore, Ill. and Mrs. Josie Delano of Highlands; and a brother, Johnny Gregersen of Highlands.

 

Pallbearers were Ben Towler, Vic Burchfield, Rodney Harmond, Leo Petersen, J. W. Graff and Bart Morrow.

John E. Horn, 78, passed away this morning in Matagorda General Hospital. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Taylor Brothers Funeral Chapel, Dr. A. T. Dyal of the First Presbyterian Church officiating.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary G. Horn, on Feb. 5, 1965.

 

Horn was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bay City and a World War I veteran. Horn had been a local rancher for over 40 years.

 

Survivors include a son, Leslie Adams of Bay City; two sisters, Mrs. Artie Harbord and Mrs. Rose Watkins, both of Bay City; and two brothers, Grover Horn and Ray Horn of Bay City; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

 

Active pallbearers will be Bart Morrow, Ben Tyler, Leo Petersen, Rodney Harmond, Clyde Ashcraft, and Buster Nave.

Myrtle Smith Johnson

Myrtle Smith Johnson, 86, of Denver, Colorado and formerly of Bay City died Tuesday, June 13th in a Denver area nursing care facility. She was born in Matagorda County on May 23rd, 1914 to parents Tom and Irma Turner Smith and was a life-long resident until moving to Colorado late last year.

She worked as a nurse in Bay City for many years and was a member of the pink ladies auxiliary. She was also an active and long time member of First Baptist Church in Bay City.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ramon Johnson. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law Tom and Jodie Johnson of Denver, Colorado and grandsons Steven Matthew and Michael Ramon Johnson of Denver; brother Tom B. Smith, Jr. of Kerrville and sisters Leona Hale of Corpus Christi, Pauline Hickey of Markham and Ethel Goode of Kingsville.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, June 18 at the First Baptist Church in Bay City with Dr. Michael Zimmerman officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. Services are under the direction of Bay City Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Ramon F. Johnson, 83, of Bay City, will be 2 pm, Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at First Baptist Church in Bay City with Dr. Mike Zimmerman officiating.  Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck. 

Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 3, 1999 from 8 am to 9 pm at the Bay City Funeral Home

Mr. Johnson died Nov. 30, 1999 at Bay Villa Nursing Home.  He was born March 19, 1916 in Gonzales, Texas.

He served in the Marine Corps during WWII, and worked many years at CP&L as a bookkeeper/accountant.

He was a past member of the Kiwanis Club of Bay City, a former member of the Bay City Volunteer Fire Department, a Master Mason of the Bay City Lodge and was a long-time member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Bay City.

Survivors include: wife, Myrtle Johnson of Bay City; one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Earl and Mary Jo Johnson of Denver, Colo.; brothers, Mack Johnson of Houston and Earl Johnson of Bay City; sister, Allie Mae Lane of Bay City; and grandsons, Steven Matthew and Michael Ramon Johnson of Denver, Colo.

Pallbearers will be the Deacons of First Baptist Church.

Services are under the direction of Bay City Funeral Home.
