The Angel of Death stalked in our community for days last week and would leave only when he had carried away the spirit of one of the handsomest and sturdiest of our sons, Carl Tanner, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Tanner. Carl had spent practically all of his seventeen years in Palacios and vicinity, attended his first school here, had passed the grades and at the time of his death was in the high school. His happy, fun-loving disposition made him a general favorite among his classmates, who twice made him their president. He was prominent on the athletic field and was to have taken part in the County Meet that was held in Bay City the day of his funeral. Carl was a devoted son and brother and was happiest when he was in the room with his mother playing with his little brother. He co-operated with his father, who was his pal, in the work of the farm, his last work being to plow a field on which to raise cow feed, Carl planning to take the entire care of the dairy cows. Thus in his passing an aching void is left in the hearts of his family and of his schoolmates and they question why his vivid, joyous happy young life need end. It is a question may not answer, only this we know, God makes no mistakes and in his plan needs Carl in the Heavenly home. Carl was born in Merrimac, Okla., April 23, 1907 and with his parents, came to Palacios twelve years ago last fall. He was taken sick Sunday, March 16th, with measles and this disease with complications caused his death early Thursday morning, March 27th. The funeral services, conducted by Rev. Gillespie, assisted by Rev. Echols and Rev. Conner, were held at the home Friday, were held at the home Friday, where surrounded by loving friends and beautiful floral offerings, the words of hope and comfort were spoken. The long line of automobiles wended their way to the beautiful, peaceful Palacios cemetery where the hands of Carl’s former schoolmates gently lowered his body into the bosom of mother earth and then heaped the grave with the sweetest and choicest of flowers. To mourn the departure of this gallant young spirit are the heart broken parents, his sister, Vera Tanner, two brothers, Joseph and Howard Tanner, several uncles and aunts and all who had ever known him. He will be greeted in the Great Beyond by a little sister, Helen, who died at the age of two months. Card of Thanks. To all those who gave so generously of their time and sympathy and love, that made life bearable during the illness and death of our loved son and brother; to those who sent such beautiful flowers; and especially to Dr. Wagner, who did all mortal could do to save our boy to us: to all these we wish to express our sincere and heartfelt thanks. J. E. Tanner and family.

Palacios Beacon, April 18, 1957 Autopsy Shows Accidental Death of Alvin Targac A local man, Alvin Joe Targac, was found dead in the front yard of his home located just north of the Palacios city limits about 7 a. m. on Saturday, April 13, according to Deputy Sheriff E. T. Miller. An inquest as to the cause of death was held by Justice of the Peace D. B. Hinton of Bay City who ordered an autopsy which showed death was due to hemorrhage of the brain caused by either falling and striking his head against some object or by a lick on the head. An investigation by Sheriff J. B. Cole and local officers revealed Targac was in very poor health, and was in a very weak condition at the time of death. Targac had been carried home from town by local officers several times recently when they would find him on the streets late at night. Sheriff Cole and Deputy Miller said there was no indication or evidence as to foul play. They said it is believed that Targac went home about 11 p. m. on April 12, and upon arrival he attempted to enter his house by the front door, fell off the east end of the small porch, skinned his leg below the knee causing considerable bleeding, and struck his head against the window sill of the house or the edge of the porch. Justice of the Peace Hinton’s inquest verdict put the cause of death as accidental death due to cerebral hemorrhage.
