Doris Mae Sheffield

Funeral services for Doris Mae Sheffield, 65, of Palacios were held Aug. 18, 1995 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dave Rolen officiating. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Sheffield was born May 28, 1930 in Batavia, Ill. to John Fred and Elizabeth Loraine Wood Basford. She died Aug. 16, 1995.

A resident of Palacios for 30 years, she was a retired waitress from Peterson’s Restaurant. Mrs. Sheffield was a Baptist and also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by a son, Rocky Sheffield of Palacios; two sisters, Joyce Koening of Palacios and Jackei Sweetser of Trinity; a brother, Lloyd Basford of Houston; and one grandchild, Daniel Sheffield of Palacios.

Charlene Lee Shelton

Funeral services for Charlene Lee Shelton, 76, of Palacios, were held Feb. 5, 2001 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios with Rev. Hollas Hoffman officiating. Interment was at Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Shelton was born July 12, 1924, in Chiderter, Ark., to the late William Dewey and Lela Earl Turbeville Lee. She died Feb. 1, 2001.

She was a member of the Alapha Club.

She is survived by her sons, Terry Lee and Robby Earl Shelton, both of Houston; a brother, William Aubrey Lee of Houston; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers were William Aubrey Lee, Marvin Curtis, Vic Kahlich, J. E. Todd, Billy Hamlin and Lacey Lowry. Memorials may be made to the Palacios Library.

Ellen Scott Shelton

Graveside services for Ellen Scott Shelton, 85, of San Antonio and formerly of Palacios, will be held at 3 p. m. Saturday, April 15, at the Palacios Cemetery with Rev. Andy Blair of the First Presbyterian Church officiating.

Mrs. Shelton was born Sept. 29, 1914 to James Henry Brotemarkle and Phoebe Anna Scott Brotemarkle in Kirwin, Kansas. She died April 6, 2000 at Southwest Methodist Hospital in San Antonio.

Her family moved to Palacios when she was 11 years old and she lived there until she married Beverly Ellison Shelton, now deceased, in 1932. For the past 15 years Mrs. Shelton lived in San Antonio.

She is survived by two children and one son-in-law, James Poe Shelton of New York City and Beverly Shelton Acker and her husband, Edwin, of Tilden; a brother, Norman Brotemarkle to Palacios; three grandchildren and their spouses, David and Linda Hollers of Brush Prairie, Washington, Scott and Michele Acker of Cedar Park, Shella and Wesley Bonner of Taft; and five great grandchildren, Jennifer and Shelton Hollers of Austin, Brianna and Elyse Acker of Cedar Park, and Rachel Bonner of Taft.

James E. Shelton

Funeral services for James E. Shelton of Corpus Christi were held at 10 A. M. Monday, September 12, at the Clifford Jackson Funeral Home in Corpus Christi. Masonic graveside services and interment were held in the Palacios Cemetery at 2:30 P. M.

Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Bedford Shelton, he was born January 4, 1917, in Elgin Texas. A resident of Corpus Christi for 31 years, he died Friday, September 9.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Eileen Faubion Shelton of Corpus Christi; one daughter, Mrs. Ann Berrio of Houston; one brother, Don M. Shelton of Huachuca City, Ariz.; two sisters, Mrs. C. R. Banner and Mrs. Louise Stivors of Austin and two grandchildren.

R. C. Shelton, Jr.

R. C. Shelton, Jr., 75, of Palacios, TX, passed away Jan 27, 1997 at The Methodist Hospital, Houston.

He was born Aug. 26, 1921 in Ladonia, TX to Roscoe C. Shelton and Josie Hulsey Shelton. He was a resident of Palacios, TX since 1948 and a US Marine Corp veteran of WWII. He held an M. S. Degree in Education and began work at the Palacios ISD in 1948 and had served as a Football Coach, as Tax Assessor Collector, and retired in 1982 as Assistant Superintendent of Business Affairs. He was a member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association, he had served as President of the Palacios Lion’s Club, the Palacios Recreation Association, and the Palacios Golf Association. He also served as a member of Palacios Seawall Commission and he was a former Palacios Chamber of Commerce “Man of the Year” and was former “Grand Marshall” of Palacios Valentine’s Day Parade.

He is survived by his wife Charlene L. Shelton of Palacios; by two sons, Robby E. Shelton and his wife Kathy S. Shelton of Houston, and Terry L. Shelton and wife Carolyn Maddox Shelton of Houston, by a sister, Peggy Jean Sullivan of Cooper, and by five grandchildren, Kristan, Colin, Carolyn A., Elizabeth, and Lee Shelton, all of Houston.

Funeral services will be 10 a. m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, 1997, at the First Baptist Church, Palacios, TX with Rev. Hollas Hoffman officiating. Interment will follow at the Palacios Cemetery, Palacios, TX.

Pallbearers are Charles Harvey, Billy Hamlin, Milam Simons, Stanley Wright, V. J. Kahlich and Maurillo Rodriguez. Honorary pallbearers are George Holst, S. T. Oglesby, Glenn Dale Claybourn and G. G. Lawson, Jr.

Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Palacios.

Bertha Evelyn Sherrill

Funeral services for Bertha Evelyn Sherrill, 94, of Bay City were scheduled for 1 p. m. Saturday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jim Hardaway officiating. Burial to follow at Palacios Cemetery in Palacios.

Miss Sherrill was born April 15, 1897, to William Henry and Lillie Simmons Sherrill in Giddings, and died Oct. 31, 1991, at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

Miss Sherrill was a lifelong resident of Bay City.

Survivors include three brothers, Clifford Sherrill and Clifton Sherrill of Houston and Wesley Sherrill of Huntsville and numerous nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City.

Mrs. Elizabeth Sherrill

Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Jones Sherrill were held at 2 p. m. Saturday in the Taylor Brothers Funeral Chapel in Bay City with Rev. Bryant Sherrill of the Trinity Assembly of God Church of Hearne, Texas, officiating. Graveside services and interment were in the Palacios Cemetery.

A resident of Bay City since 1912, she was born October 16, 1885, and died Friday, May 5, in her home in Bay City.

Survivors include her three daughters, Miss Bertha Evelyn Sherrill, Miss Julia Sherrill, of Bay City and Mrs. Ruby Mae Laxson of Encino; six sons, C. J., C. D. and Gilbert Sherrill, of Houston; W. H. Sherrill of Page, Wesley Sherrill of Huntsville and Gifford Sherrill of Bay City; 13 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.

Sherrill Rites Held – Gifford Matthew Sherrill

Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Sunday, November 4 at Taylor Brothers Funeral Chapel in Bay City for Gifford Matthew Serrill of Bay City with Dr. Joe Cannon conducting the service. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery.

Son of the late William Henry and Elizabeth Sherrill, he was born April 24, 1916, at Buckeye, Texas, and passed away November 3 at Bay City. He was a veteran of World War II and saw service in the Navy in the South Pacific.

He is survived by sisters Miss Bertha Sherrill and Miss Julia Sherrill of Bay City and Mrs. Ruby Laxson of Olivia, Texas and brothers, W. H. Sherrill of Palacios, Clifford, Clifton and Gilbert all of Houston and Wesley of Huntsville.

Julia Sherrill

Funeral services for Julia Sherrill, 70, of Bay City, will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p. m. at the Taylor Brothers Chapel in Bay City with Bishop Lynn Grebe officiating. Interment will follow at Palacios Cemetery.

Ms. Sherrill was born February 1, 1919 in Collegeport, to the late William Henry and Elizabeth Jones Sherrill and died October 8, 1989 in Matagorda House.

She was a lifetime resident of Matagorda County and had resided in Palacios. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Survivors include a sister, Bertha Evelyn Sherrill of Bay City; and brothers, Clifton and Clifford Sherrill of Houston and Wesley Sherrill of Huntsville.

Pallbearers will be E. S. “Shep” Graham, Bill McKissick, Walter Lowe, Ralph Barlow, E. J. Ashcraft, Jr. and Raymond E. Mosley.

Matthew Gainey Sherrill

Mr. Sherrill, aged about 75 years passed away early Wednesday morning at the home of his son, W. H. Sherrill, in the Turtle Bay community. Burial will take place today in the Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Mary B. Sherrill

Graveside services for Mrs. Mary Benham Sherrill were held at the Palacios Cemetery Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock with the Rev. Bobby Cardwell officiating.

Daughter of the late James and Hettie Benham, she was a native of Palestine, Texas, being born on March 19, 1900. A resident of Palacios for five years, residing at 511 Humphrey. She passed away at Wagner General Hospital Friday morning, January 7.

She is survived by her husband, W. H. Sherrill of Palacios; one daughter, Mrs. Erwin P. Ricicar of Hitchcock; two sons, Herschel C. Sherrill of Houston and Jesse B. Sherrill of Texas City; three sisters, Mrs. Mae Berry of Amhurst, Mrs. Mira Hassell of Palestine, Mrs. Allene Dirkson of Littlefield; one brother, Joe E. Benham of California; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

William Henry Sherrill

W. H. Sherrill, after several days of illness, passed away at his home near Midfield, on Tuesday afternoon, April 19, with his immediate family at this bedside.

Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon with Elder George W. Gasser and Elder Benson officiating. The remains were then conveyed to Palacios and interred in the city cemetery.

Mr. Sherrill was born in Burleson County, Texas, in 1872. When quite young his parents moved to Lee County, where he grew to manhood and married Miss Lillie Simmon in 1893. To this union were born five children. In 1902 his wife and two children passed over yonder. In 1911 he married Miss Elizabeth Jones and to this union seven children were born. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, seven sons, three grand-children, five sisters and two brothers.

The deceased came from a pioneer family, his great-grandfather was in the Continental Army and was in the battle of Bunker Hill, while his grandfather was a soldier under Sam Houston.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, had resided in this county for the past 20 years and had many friends who regret his passing on and extend to the bereaved family heartfelt sympathy.

William Hurshel Sherrill

Funeral services for William Hurshel Sherrill, 81 of Palacios, were held Jan. 2 at 11 a. m. with Rev. Jesse Legg officiating. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery.

Sherrill died Dec. 31 at Matagorda General Hospital. He was a Pentecostal and belonged to the Woodman of the World and the Odd Fellows Lodge.

He is survived by a daughter, Rose E. Ricicar of Alta Loma, Tex.; sons, Carroll Sherrill of Houston, J. B. Sherrill of Texas City; sisters Bertha E. Sherrill and Julia Sherrill both of Bay City; brothers, Wesley Sherrill of Huntsville, Gilbert, Clifford and Clifton Sherrill all of Houston; 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Infant of W. H. Sherrill

Burial services were held at the cemetery Wednesday afternoon for the infant of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Sherrill, of Gulf, Texas, with Rev. R. Paine officiating. The remains were interred beside those of the grandfather, buried there two weeks ago.

Final Services Held Here Monday For Mrs. Naomi Shoultz

Graveside services for Mrs. Naomi Shoultz, 59, were held Monday afternoon at the Palacios Cemetery following services at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City at 2 p. m. Rev. Leslie LeGrand officiated.

Mrs. Shoultz, formerly of Palacios and Bay City, died at the home of her son in Arlington, Saturday.

Survivors include her three daughters, Mrs. George Yeager of Bay City; Mrs. W. H. Chenault, Jr., Dallas and Mrs. R. H. Mount, Sweeny; one son, Robert Margerum, Arlington; five sisters, Mrs. Joe Huffman, Palacios; Mrs. Alvin Jackson, Colorado City; Mrs. Bernice Bingham, San Marcos; Mrs. Due Lacy, Nederland and Mrs. Montie Simpson, Seadrift; three brothers, Sam Welborn, Llano; Jasper Wellborn, Corpus Christi and Jim Welborn, Houston and several grandchildren.

Shreve Rites Held Sunday – Charles Donald Shreve

Charles Donald Shreve, principal of Palacios High School, died Friday afternoon, November 14, after suffering a heart attack in his office.

The community was shocked at the sudden passing of a man who had been prominent in the Palacios schools for the past twenty years.

Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Church at 3 p. m. Sunday, November 16, with Bro. N. E. Balch, Rev. J. R. Gwin and Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Charles Wiggs, Victor Kahlich, R. C. Shelton, Jerry Dobson, Leon Bullock and Lynn Hiller.

A native of Thornton, Texas, Shreve was born October 27, 1932, the son of Charles Paton Shreve and Ethel Bates Shreve. He graduated from Groesbeck High School in 1950, received his B. S. degree from Texas A&M University in 1954 and a Master of Education degree from San Houston University in 1962.

Shreve came to Palacios in 1954 as a junior high school teacher-athletic coach. While here he was called into the service and after serving two years as a first lieutenant in the U. S. Army in Korea, he returned to Palacios and to his junior high school post in 1957.

He served as first assistant football and head basketball coach from 1960-64, became athletic director and head football coach in 1964 and led his football team to Palacios’ only state football championship in 1964.

He began serving as assistant principal in 1968 while still coaching, became fulltime assistant principal in 1971 and was elevated to Principal of Palacios High School on November 21, 1974, following the death of J. G. Smith, Jr. on November 13.

Shreve held Life Professional Certification for elementary schools, secondary schools, vocation-trades and industry and in principalship.

He was a member of several professional organizations including the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals, Texas High School Coaches Association.

He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Carter Shreve; one son, Chuck Shreve; two daughters, Dianne and Traci Shreve, all of Palacios and his mother, Mrs. Ethel Shreve of Groesbeck.

Ozena “Dee” Simmons

Funeral services for Ozena “Dee” Simmons, 76 of Dallas, were held January 6 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel at 10 a. m. with Rev. Stacy Houser officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery.

Ms. Simmons was born September 7, 1913 in Jewett to the late William Henry and Mary Ethel Alewine Hall. She died January 3, 1990 at her residence. A resident of Dallas for 45 years, she was affiliated with the Calvary Baptist Church in Dallas.

Survivors include sisters, Willie Dean Le Roche of Dallas and Vera Mae Poston of Palacios.

Pallbearers were Oswald Kubecka, Paul Cooper, Merle Dillard, Billy Hamlin, James Kubecka and Frank Johs.

Mrs. Dorothy Simpson

Funeral services for Mrs. Dorothy Rose Simpson will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday, September 4, at the Palacios Funeral Home.

Born June 7, 1915, she passed away in Bay City Monday, September 1.

Survivors include her husband, J. G. Simpson of Palacios, one daughter, Mrs. James L. Evens, Jr. of Matagorda; one son, James C. Simpson, stationed in Vietnam and one grandchild.

Edna Crain Simpson

Funeral services for Mrs. Edna Crain Simpson were held at 2 p. m. Monday, July 30, in the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J. R. Gwin officiating.

Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. John David Crain, she was born November 29, 1883, in Ford Station, Texas. She had been a resident of Palacios for 22 years and of Matagorda County since 1898. A member of the Methodist Church, she died Saturday, July 28, in Wagner General Hospital.

Survivors include one daughter, Ethel Looney of Rosenberg; three sons, E. R. Simpson of Palacios, R. K. and C. P. Simpson of Needville and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Emma Simpson

Mrs. Emma Mae McIntyre Simpson, who died at her home in this city Saturday morning, Nov. 27, 1943 was born in Lavaca County, Texas, Feb. 5, 1909. She was married to Virgil P. Simpson, July 18, 1936, and for several years they have made their home in and around Palacios. Four children were born of this union, Alva Mae, Shirley Yvonne, Betty Delores and Virgil Clyde, and the husband survive, also two sisters Mrs. Leon Mach and Mrs. C. N. Hack and two brothers, Robert and F. C. McIntyre, the latter now being in the service and is doing duty overseas.

While still a girl, she became a christian and a member of the Baptist Church in the county in which she was born.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. L. W. Crouch, pastor of the First Baptist Church and burial made in the Palacios cemetery, Palacios Funeral Home in charge.

Floyd E. Simpson

Floyd Edgar, son of Mr. and Mrs. V. P. Simpson died Oct. 9, 1939. He was born May 21, 1937 and tho’ short his life had to be, yet how much he meant to all, who came to know the little fellow. Besides the parents he is survived by two sisters, Alva and Yvonne Simpson.

Funeral services were conducted Monday morning at 9:30 at the Brandon-Duffy Funeral Home by Rev. L. W. Crouch; a quartet of ladies from the Baptist Church singing two numbers.

Interment was made in the Palacios cemetery under the direction of the Brandon-Duffy Funeral Home. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved.
