Funeral services were held Tuesday for Mrs. Ruby Omelia Scott, 78, a long time resident of Palacios. Mrs. Scott, who lived here with her daughter, Mrs. Robert Sanders, was the widow of J. S. Scott. She was born in Frankville, Alabama. Mrs. Scott died Monday, January 2. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. G. Sullivan, pastor of the Church of God in Bay City, at 2 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home. She is survived by three daughters Mrs. Sanders, Palacios; Mrs. Pratt Threadgill, Selma, Alabama, and Mrs. Roy Willett, Bayou La Batre, Alabama, and one son, J. C. Scott, of Palacios. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Will W. Scott, a retired wholesale fisherman and netter, passed away Saturday, May 6, in DeTar Hospital in Victoria after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 9, at 3 p. m. at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Thomas Connolly officiating followed by interment in the Palacios Cemetery. Son of the late Rev. J. D. Scott and Mary V. Owen Scott, he was born September 3, 1891, in Seguin, Texas. He had been a resident of Palacios for 23 years. He was preceded in death by his wife on September 9, 1970. He is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth Scott of Palacios, Mary Virginia Strand of Birmingham, Mich., and Jeanne Schram of Elmhurst, Ill.; two sisters, Sue Etchells and Louise Bland of San Antonio; three brothers, J. D. Scott of Malverne, N. Y., E. Walter and George M. Scott of San Antonio and four grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha E. Scudder, 99, were held Sunday, March 4 at 2 p. m. at the Taylor Bros. Chapel in Bay City with the Rev. W. D. O’Neal officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. A former resident of Palacios, she passed away at the Bay Villa Nursing Home Friday, March 2. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Harold V. Barr of Bay City and three grandchildren, James, Doris Ann and Richard Barr.

Graveside services were held in the Palacios Cemetery Tuesday afternoon for M. J. Scudder who passed away at his home in La Feria, Texas, after an illness of some duration. Rev. L. M. Greenhaw officiated. Survivors are his wife, and one daughter, Mrs. Harold Barr of Bay City, and three grandchildren. Mr. Scudder, wife and daughter came to Palacios about 20 years ago to make their home and he purchased the jewelry store from the late H. C. Boyd which he conducted for some time. He disposed of this business to M. I. Cox, and moved to La Feria, Texas, where he had made his home until his death. They had a large circle of friends in this community who join in extending sympathy to the bereaved.

Chas. Clinton Sealock died Saturday, January 5, at his home nine miles west of Palacios, at the age of twenty-two years and four months. The remains were interred in the Palacios cemetery Sunday afternoon, Rev. W. H. Travis performing the funeral services. The Beacon is joined by the entire community in extending its heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved ones.

Melvin Richard, aged two years and six days, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Sealock, residing about eight miles west of Palacios, died Thursday, the 4th inst., after a brief illness. Funeral services were held at the family home Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. Curtis of the Palacios Academy, followed by interment at the Palacios cemetery. The large circle of friends of the family throughout the surrounding country sincerely sympathize with them in their loss and bereavement.

Funeral services for Arnold Jacob Serna, 60, of Palacios, were held July 22, 1994 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Tom Horne officiating. Burial was in Palacios Cemetery. Mr. Serna was born April 11, 1934 in Bay City to the late Guadalupe and Olivia De La Rosa Serna, he died Jul 20, 1994. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Martino Serna; a daughter, Olivia Kacer of Palacios; three sons, Arnold J. Serna, Jr., Henry Serna and Robbie Serna, all of Palacios; two sisters, Irene Valero of Houston and Irma Serna of Richmond; three brothers, Rudolph Serna of Houston, Guadalupe Serna, Jr. of Victoria and Edward Serna of Palacios; and 12 grandchildren. Pallbearers were K. Williams, Ed Hunter, Clay Dyson, Gary Viets, Virgin Browning and Scott Delboskie. Honorary pallbearers were Alfred Garcia, Buster Riley, John Ragusin and James Hagaman.

Funeral services for Guadalupe Serna, 79, were held Dec. 19 at 2 p. m. at the Second Presbyterian Church. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery. Serna was born June 10, 1903 in Mexico and died Dec. 17, 1982 at De Tar Hospital in Victoria. He had owned and operated a dry cleaning business in Palacios for over 30 years and had been a resident of the city since 1945. He was a Mason and a member of the Woodmen of the World Lodge. Survivors include two daughters, Irene Valero of Houston and Irma Miranda of Victoria; four sons, Rudy Serna of Houston, Lupe Serna, Jr. of Victoria, and Arnold Serna and Edward Serna, both of Palacios; one brother, Raymond Serna of San Juan; 26 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Funeral services for Mrs. Trinidad R. Serna were held at 4 p. m. Monday, July 24, at the Second Presbyterian Church with Rev. Sostenes Infante officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. A resident of Palacios since 1944, she was born November 25, 1893 in Mexico and died July 23 in Wagner General Hospital. Survivors include her husband Guadalupe Serna, Sr. of Palacios; two daughters, Irene Valero and Irma Imramanda, both of Houston; four sons, Ruby E. Palacios—Ramona Fernandez Servantes, 87, of Palacios, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008. She was born March 28, 1921, in Edna, to the late Lucas Fernandez Sr. and Francisca Altamira Fernandez. She was a homemaker and a member of The Living Word Church. She is survived by her daughters, Pat C. Solis and Ramona Flores, both of Palacios; son, Ysidro Servantes Jr. of Palacios, 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ysidro Servantes Sr.; daughter, Refugia Salinas; son, Cecil Servantes; sister, Maria Fernandez Garcia; brothers, Eluterio Fernandez, Tomas Fernandez, Lucas Fernandez Jr., and George Fernandez. Servantes, the son of Dionicio and Aljandra Mungia Servantes, was a retired custodian from Palacios I. S. D. and had been a resident of Palacios for over 40 years. He was born May 15, 1915 in Mexico and died Dec. 15, 1986 at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City. Palacios—Dora Diaz-Servantez, 64, of Palacios, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999. She was born Feb. 6, 1935, in Matagorda to the late Fred Sr. and Bessie Gatica Diaz. She was a homemaker and member of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church. Survivors: husband, Joe Servanez; sons, Arturo Rivera, Richard Rivera, Jesse Guillen and John Anthony Guerra, all of Palacios; sisters, Alvesa “Besie” Diaz-Gonzales of Crescent Valley and Susan Diaz-Galvan of Blessing; brothers, Fred Diaz, Jr. of Palacios, Rocky Diaz of Edna and Randy Diaz of La Porte; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Carl Douglas Sexton, who died suddenly Friday afternoon, were held at 3 p. m. Sunday, March 5, at the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. Rayford Harris officiating. A self-employed carpenter, he had been a resident of Palacios for 42 years. Funeral services for Melvin Earl Sexton, 66 of Palacios, were held Feb. 18 at 4 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J. R. Gwin of St. San Augustine officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery. Sexton was born Feb. 25, 1922 and died Feb. 16, 1989 at Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Houston. He was a veteran of World War II and the South Pacific, serving in the U. S. Navy and the U. S. Coast Guard. He was a lifelong resident of the Palacios area. Survivors include daughters, Diana Adams of Francitas, Virginia Benner of Houston, and Linda Dawson of Splendora; sons, Robert Lee Sexton of Sabine Pass and Charles Lee Sexton of Aransas Pass; sisters, Sally Owens of Lubbock and Lois Owen of Abilene; 16 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Reddell. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Palacios.

A 26 year-old Palacios man has been charged with homicide in connection with the shooting death June 18 of another Palacios resident. Shot and killed was Joseph A. Shake, 31. He was pronounced dead at the scene, 1002 Johnson Street in Palacios, where the subject reportedly lived with his mother-in-law. Police reports state the shooting occurred inside the residence and that Shake, who then ran across the street. Police reports state the shooting occurred outside the residence and that Shake was apparently killed by a single shotgun blast. However, an autopsy was ordered. According to the police reports, Shake was reported as having been in the area of Sainz’s residence earlier that night, knocking on windows. Sainz then reportedly got a shotgun and went outside to confront Shake, who then ran across the street. When Shake began to run around the back of the residence at 1002 Johnson, Sainz allegedly fired at him with a 12 gauge shotgun. Sainz is being held in the county jail in Bay City in lieu of $10,000 bond.

Funeral services for Mrs. Sylvia Shannon were held at the Church of God of Prophecy, West Palacios, Sunday, January 27, at 1:30 p. m. with Bishop Barney L. Trodgon of Cleveland, Tennessee, officiating. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery. Mrs. Shannon was born Sept. 2, 1885 and died of a heart attack at her home Sunday, January 20, at about 11:30 p. m. A native of Matagorda County, having resided in Palacios with her family for about 47 years, she was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy, West Palacios. A very devout Christian, she reared her family to walk in the fear of the Lord. Her home by the help of her older daughter, Winnie, was known as the “home of hospitality.” She is survived by 11 daughters, Winnie Shannon, Dorothy Deadrick and Myrtle Deadrick of Palacios, Grace Carter of Houston, Calanthe Deadrick of Brooklyn, N. Y., Estella Reed, and Vera Reed of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Adelaide Williams of Pasadena, Calif., Virginia Lawrence of Compton, Calif., Johnnie Nelson and Dora Lewis of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sons, Wellie Shannon of Duarte, Calif. and Troy Shannon of Riverside, Calif. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Dora Faniel of Ashby and Mrs. Ollie Gordon of San Antonio; five brothers, Word Rivers, Palacios, Emmit Rivers, Bay City, Mark Haddon of Dickinson, Harvey Hadden, Houston, John H. Hadden of Ashby; thirty-two grandchildren, eighty-one great grandchildren and fourteen great-great grandchildren.

Mrs. Annie M. Shaw passed away at her home in Palacios at five o'clock Wednesday morning after a severe illness of three months' duration. The funeral services were conducted at the home late Wednesday afternoon by Rev. Echols and the tired body placed to rest in teh Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Shaw was born in Glasgow, Scotland, fifty-nine years ago and came to Illinois with her parents when she was eight years of age. She was twice married and the mother of two children--a daughter by her first husband, preceding her mother to the Great Beyond. The second marriage was to Mr. John H. Shaw, of Chicago, with whom she lived very happily, their life of christian love and devotion terminating six years ago when Mr. Shaw was called to his eternal rest. To this union was born one son, Herbert Louis Shaw, of Palacios. She is survived by her son, three grandsons and two grand daughters. Mrs. Shaw came to Palacios about two years ago and her contagious cheerfulness, ready sympathy and helpfulness endeared her to all with whom she was associated. She was an active member in the Methodist church up to the very day of her final illness and her christian life was one of peace happiness and service, ever seeking to know better God's plan and being faithful in his service. "Be thou faithful unto death and God will give thee the crown of life."
