Funeral services for Joe Stredic, 77, were held at 2 p. m. Saturday, July 7 at the Pilgrim Rose Baptist Church with the Rev. Samuel Tims officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. A resident of Palacios for many years, he was a World War I veteran. He passed away June 30 at Wagner General Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Mabel Stredic of Palacios; one son, Bobbie Joe Stredic of Houston; three brothers, Aaron and Allen Stredic of Bay City and Eugene Stredic of Wharton; an aunt, three uncles, one granddaughter and four grandsons.

L. E. Strickland was born on May 30, 1855 near Auburn, Fayette County, Iowa. He fell asleep in Jesus Nov. 10, 1936 being 81 years 5 months and 10 days of age. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon in the Palacios Funeral home, conducted by Rev. W. G. Burchard, assisted by Rev. J. C. Gibbons and Rev. C. E. Metcalf, and interment made in the Palacios cemetery under the direction of the Palacios Funeral Home. Mr. Strickland lived at this birthplace with his parents until he was thirty years of age. He then pioneered and settled on a farm near Farman, Dawson County, Nebraska. When eighteen years of age he was converted and united with the Baptist Church of which he remained a devoted member until his death. February 9, 1893 he was united in marriage to Martha Miller. He leaves to lament his going from among us, his devoted wife, four sisters, one brother, several nephews and nieces, with a great host of loyal friends and neighbors. He, with his wife, came to Texas in 1911 for the benefit of his health, and two years were spent in various parts of the coast country. They finally located in Francitas in 1913, and on August 6, 1921 they removed to Palacios, where they have since made their home.

Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Strickland were held at the Palacios Funeral Home, Tuesday at 2 p. m. with C. E. Metcalfe, former minister of the Church of Christ, officiating. Burial followed in the Palacios Cemetery. A resident of Palacios for many years, she lived at 500 Perryman Avenue. She was born March 26, 1866 and passed away January 18, 1960

Funeral services for George Stubblefield were held at the First Baptist Church Thursday, March 22, at 3 p. m. with Rev. Rayford B. Harris of First Baptist Church and Rev. L. W. Crouch, association missionary, officiating. Born December 8, 1908, in Kerens, Texas, the son of Sarah and Harris Stubblefield, he passed away suddenly after a fatal heart attack at his home early Wednesday morning, March 21. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. He was married to Nerva Harvey on August 3, 1929 in El Campo, Texas. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Hardy Ross of Lake Jackson and Georgene Stubblefield, a student at the University of Texas, one brother, Jim Stubblefield of Nixon and two grandchildren, Karen and George Ross. Mr. Stubblefield, a well-known rice and cotton farmer in Matagorda County for many years, was active in many organizations throughout the county. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Past Worshipful Master of Palacios Masonic Lodge and holding 32 degree in masonry, also a member of Order of Eastern Star, Arabia Temple of Houston and Scottish Rite of Galveston. He had served on the Advisory Board Order of Rainbow for Girls, vice president of Bay Grain Co., was serving as a member and vice president of Palacios School Board, chairman of commissioners of Drainage District No. 3, honorary member of Future Farmers of America and an active member on the Agricultural committee in Bay City. He was a lover of any game of sports. Interment was made in the Palacios Cemetery with Masonic services conducted at graveside. Pallbearers were O. O. Mixon, Glen Hutson, Ralph Newsom, J. G. Smith, Byron Hamlin and E. O. Ramsey. Honorary pallbearers were Guy Johnson, J. H. Ross, P. A. Richman, Alfred Kopecky, P. V. Corporon, Charles Johnson, Clyde Hammonds, members of the Palacios School Board, directors of Bay Grain Co. and members of Palacios Masonic Lodge. Those attending from out of town: Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Harris R. Stubblefield died at his home Wednesday, aged 65 years and 2 months. Born December 5, 1870 and died Feb. 5, 1936. He is survived by his wife and two sons, 12 grandchildren, 2 brothers and four sisters. He has lived in Texas about 40 years, and came to Palacios in 1919 where he has made his home on a farm near here ever since. He had been an invalid for some months, a victim of paralysis and suffered another stroke the first of the week, which resulted in his death. Funeral services will be held at the Palacios Funeral Home Friday at 2 p. m. conducted by Rev. George D. McClelland, with members from the Woodmen Lodge as pall bearers. Interment will be made in the City Cemetery under the direction of the Palacios Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Stubblefield were held at 4:30 Sunday afternoon, June 29, 1958 in the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. Rayford Harris conducting the service. Interment followed in the Palacios Cemetery. Born May 9, 1871 in Tennessee she died in the hospital in El Campo, Saturday morning, June 28, after a prolonged illness. She is survived by her two sons, George Stubblefield of Palacios and J. M. Stubblefield of Nixon, Texas.

Funeral service were held for Guy W. Stulting at the Palacios Funeral Home at 3 p. m. Friday, February 13, with the Rev. Rayford Harris, pastor of the First Baptist Church, conducting the services. He was born August 3, 1891 at Gonzales, Texas, and died of a heart attack at Bay City February 12, 1953. Stulting had lived in Palacios for 43 years. He was active in the cattle industry as well as a peace officer and deputy sheriff. He served as a deputy sheriff for 16 years. He was a veteran of World War I. Burial was at the Palacios cemetery. The V. F. W. also conducted services. Included among the survivors are 1 brother, Morgan C. Stulting, Big Spring, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Peggy Martin, Palacios, and Mrs. W. M. Kimbell, Troup, Texas. Pallbearers were P. A. Richman, Billy Holt, Bill Bolling, Gordon Starr, J. H. Shearer, and P. R. Treacy.

Requiem mass for Manuel Sul was held at 9 a. m. Monday, August 2 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Harrold officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. Rosary was recited at 8 p. m. Saturday at the Palacios Funeral Home. A resident of Palacios for 25 years, he was born March 7, 1891, a son of Vicente and Cruz Manviquez Sul. He passed away at Wagner General Hospital at 8:25 p. m. Friday, July 30. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Charlie Williams in California; and three brothers, Paul Sul of Bay City, Antonio Sul of San Antonio, and Candido Sul of Corpus Christi.

Mrs. Genevieve Sullivan, who would have been 90 on August 18, died Wednesday, August 2, in Wagner General Hospital after a lengthy illness. Rosary was recited at 7 p. m. Friday, August 4, in the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral mass was held at 11 a. m. Saturday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. V. J. Bily officiating. Interment followed in the Palacios Cemetery. Born August 18, 1888 in Salina, Kansas, she was the daughter of the late Raymond L. and Anne Lorene Scheiffert Getts. For the past ten years she had made her home in Palacios with her daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nolan at 412 First Street. She was an active member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and the Wednesday Club. She is survived by one daughter, Anne K. Nolan of Palacios; one brother, Raymond Getts of Los Angeles, Calif.; one niece, Nancy Webster of Whittier, Calif.; one nephew, Jack Young of Long Beach, Calif.; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

The sixteen months old baby boy of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Sutterfield died at Freeport Monday. The body was brought to Palacios and funeral services were held at the Vineyard home Tuesday, conducted by Elder Boyle of the Christian church, followed by interment at the city cemetery. The family is well known here and they have many friends who sympathize with them in their great loss.

Funeral services for Lex A. Sutton, Sr., 72, of Palacios, were held Dec. 26, 1997 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Hayes of Huntington, TX officiating. Interment will follow at the Palacios Cemetery. Mr. Sutton was born June 4, 1925 in El Campo to Matthew Samuel Sutton and Ada B. Harris Sutton. He died December 24, 1997. He was a member of the Baptist Church, a resident of Palacios for forty-four years, retired as a Biology Technician from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept., and a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II and Korea. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Jones Sutton of Palacios; by his daughter and son-in-law, Sandra Gayle Sutton Honc and husband, Clifford of Hungerford, TX; daughter and son-in-law of previous marriage, Lurraine and Nelson Schmidt of Fayetteville, TX; son and daughter-in-law of previous marriage, Lex A. Sutton, Jr. and wife Ruby of Ellinger, TX; special grandchildren, Melissa Ann and Rebecca Jo Hone of Hungerford; a sister, Nancy Cross of Pasadena and by other grandchildren. Pallbearers were Jim Dailey, Joey Kana, James Kruse, Bob Colura, Rodney Girndt and Wayne Dodd. Honorary pallbearers were Buddy Lovell, Wilson Herbert, Gene Allen, Edwin Bowers, Claude Horton, Mike Weixelman, Clifford Wright, Bill Balboa, Dr. Robert Mike Farrell and Dr. Herman Wolff.

Arvid Swenson, 88, a former resident of Olivia, died Sept. 1 at the home of a niece in Victoria with whom he had been living since the first of the year. Swenson, a retired farmer, was born Jan. 13, 1893 in Drummond, Wisc. and was a member of the Church of Christ. Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Sept. 3 at Richardson Funeral Chapel with Nolan E. Balch officiating. Burial was in Palacios Cemetery. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Elvera Hodges of Victoria and many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Vernon Damstrom, Paul Abraha, Glen Peterson, Wayne Abraham, Bill Parrish, Jr., Richard Parrish and J. W. Savage.

Funeral services for Mrs. Tinnie Swenson were held at 10 a. m. Monday, December 14, at the Emken-Linton Funeral Home in LaMarque. Graveside services were held that afternoon at 2 in the Palacios Cemetery. Born July 2, 1904, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas S. Elliott, she died December 11, 1970. She is survived by her husband, Hilding Swenson of Hitchcock and a sister, Mrs. Stillman Winfield of Palacios.

Funeral services for Mrs. Verdie Jewel Swenson were held at 4 p. m. Thursday, April 3, at the Church of Christ with Henry Doublet officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. A daughter of the late Jack and Ella Langston, she was born September 30, 1902 and died Tuesday, April 1, in Wagner General Hospital after a lingering illness. A. retired teacher, she had taught in the Palacios schools for 23 years. Survivors include her husband, Arvid Swenson; a sister, Mrs. Hortense Wyatt and a brother, Watts Langston.
Your Schools Mrs. Verdie Jewel Swenson was a teacher that demanded good discipline from her students and in return received each student’s respect and love. She was a teacher that believed in the good hard work approach to getting an education. Many of her former students have expressed their appreciation for her teaching by making the statement, “Mrs. Swenson was my best teacher because she knew how to get the work out of me and this caused me to learn more.” Mrs. Swenson passed away last week after over a year of serious illness. She had been forced to leave her beloved classroom in the middle of the 1967-68 school year. Her teaching covered a span of 44 years with 23 of those years in Palacios. Funeral services for Mrs. Belle Swinford, a former resident of northwest Palacios, were held at the Palacios Funeral Home, Sunday, September 25 at 3 p. m. with the Rev. John Fluth, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Mrs. Swinford who was born November 12, 1867, died in Galveston Friday, September 23. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. She is survived by two sons, D. M. Curtis of Bay City, A. J. Curtis of Galveston; one sister, Mrs. Grace Higgenbotham, Crawfordville, Indiana; one brother Roe Landers, Rolla, Missouri.
