Sarah Elizabeth Ruthven, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Ruthven, was born January 6, 1912, died in El Paso, Texas, September 29, 1935. Born and reared in our city she was known and beloved by all. She was a member of the class of 1930 to graduate from our high school and during her sophomore year in college became ill of the malady that resulted in her early demise. While yet in her childhood she became a member of the Presbyterian Church, of which she was a devoted member of all its activities. She was especially interested in the local mission for the Mexican people, and spent many of her Sunday afternoons in this work. Elizabeth was a happy, cheerful disposition, and enjoyed helping to bring joy and gladness to all with whom she came in contact; thoughtful of her friends and loved ones even to the very last moments of her sojourn on this earth. Her remains were prepared for burial and brought to her home in this city, where funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon by Rev. G. F. Gillespie assisted by Rev. E. F. Kluck of the Methodist Church and Rev. G. D. McClelland of the First Baptist Church and Rev. E. A. J Seddon, Jr., of Bay City. Interment was made in the Palacios cemetery. Pallbearers were Thomas S. Brandon, Lance Williams, Matthew Burton, Coleman Clement, Henry Lawson and Sammy Hood, who had been lifelong friends and classmates at school. The floral offerings from friends and relatives from far and near attested the love and esteem held for her, and in the words of a poet unknown we offer the following tribute, the same given to a member of her class who preceded her to the other shore.
Near a garden wall a rose once grew,
As it grew and blossomed fair and tall,
Onward it crept, with added strength;
The light, the dew, the broadening view,
Shall claim of death cause us to grieve, --Selected.
