The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Rodriguez of Palacios died at birth Thursday morning, December 19, in Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City. Funeral services were held at 10 a. m. Friday at Rendon Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Brian Crookes, pastor of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church officiating. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery. Survivors in addition to his parents include his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Arturo Gonzales of San Antonio and Mr. and Mrs. Joaquin Rocha of Palacios.

Palacios—Porfirio “CC Red” Rodriguez, 79, of Palacios, died Saturday, Feb. 6 1999. He was born Sept. 9, 1919, in Austwell, to the late Frank and Maria Leal Rodriguez. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the U. S. Army. He was a pipe room worker for Alcoa and was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. Survivors: wife, Guadalupe Rodriguez; daughters, Rachel Carillo, Sylvia Sandoval and Margie Gomez, all of Palacios and Elma Ortiz of Corpus Christi; sons, Frank Rodriguez and Robert Lawrence, both of Freeport, John Hienamn of Rosenberg and Robert Macklin of Katy; 24 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by: wife, Alicia Rodriguez. Services will be 3 p. m. today at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, the Rev. Casmir Jarzombek officiating. Burial will be at Palacios Cemetery. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery following graveside services conducted by the Ritual Team of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2467. Rosary was recited at 8 p. m. Wednesday in the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel. Born October 24, 1924, in Edna, he had lived most of his life in Palacios. An employee of Alcoa Point Comfort Operations for 28 years, he was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, having served with the U. S. Army in World War II. He died Wednesday morning in Wagner General Hospital after a two year illness. Survivors include his wife, Alexandria Rodriguez of Palacios; one daughter, Ruby Cortez of Baytown; one son, Ralph Rodriguez, Jr. of Houston; three sisters, Ermania Maceda of Port Lavaca, Natilia Serrata of Houston and Alice Harvey of Palacios; three brothers, Willie Rodriguez of Port Lavaca, Antonio Rodriguez of Palacios, Alex Peres of Port Lavaca and six grandchildren.

Funeral services for Ramona Sanchez Rodriguez, 54 of Palacios, were held July 26 at 3 P. M. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Casey Jarzombek officiating. Interment followed at the Palacios Cemetery. A rosary was recited July 25 at the Palacios Funeral Home. Mrs. Sanchez was born Feb. 21, 1936 to Oliver and Marianna Yvaves Sanchez in Jackson County and died July 23, 1990 at Wagner General Hospital. A resident of Palacios since 1951, she was a member of the Catholic Church. Survivors include her husband, Juan A. Rodriguez of Palacios; mother, Marianna Sanchez of Richmond; eight daughters, Rosita Rodriguez of Pasadena, Betty Ann Flores of Spanish Camp, Carmelita Chavez of La Port, Diana Rodriguez of Pasadena, Mary Light of Pine Bluff, Ark., Katherine Louise White of Aikens, S. C., Margarita Rodriguez of El Campo and Loretta Lynn Rodriguez of Pasadena; two sons, Herminio Rodriguez of Japan and Joe Rodriguez of Palacios; one sister, Herminia Loya of Richmond; one brother, Leon Sanchez of El Campo; 25 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Pallbearers were John Chavez, Pete Diaz, Mario Diaz, Michael Rodriguez, Danny Rodriguez and John Sanchez. Last Saturday evening the sad news of the sudden death of Mrs. Rehena Rodriquez became known, and the doctor, friends and neighbors of the family were called to the home to assist in any way they could. Mrs. Rodriquez had been in poor health it seems for some time past and would often become despondent. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon and burial was made in the Palacios cemetery. The Rodriquez family have lived in Palacios a number of years. The deceased is survived by her husband and one daughter.

Mass of the Angels was said for Rosenda “Sandy” Rodriguez at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church Monday, March 27, at 9 a. m. with Father Michael Harrold officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. The young daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bernardo Rodriguez, Jr. of Corpus Christi, formerly of Palacios, Rosenda was born April 17, 1963, in Palacios and passed away Saturday morning in John Sealy Hospital in Galveston, where she had been a patient the past two months. She is survived by her parents, a brother, Steven, and a sister, Rachel.

Funeral services for Steven Rodriguez, 20, of Bay City, were held Tuesday at 2 p. m. at the Church of God of Prophecy in Palacios with Brother Randy Goin officiating. Interment followed in Palacios Cemetery. Rodriguez was born Sept. 24, 1966 and died Sept. 20, 1987 in Wharton. He had been living in Bay City for three months, and was formerly of Palacios. Knife Victim Rites Held Funeral services for Yolanda Garza Rodriguez of Ganado, who was found dead of a knife wound in her home Thursday night, were held at 10 a. m. Monday, April 17, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Palacios with the Rev. Brian Crookes officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. Rosary was recited at 7 p. m. Sunday at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel. Jackson County officers reported Mrs. Rodriguez was found in her home with a knife cut across the throat. Her ex-husband, Bartolo Rodriguez, Jr. of Ganado, was arrested as a suspect and has been charged with alleged murder in connection with the case. Mrs. Rodriguez was born Sept. 3, 1945 in Bloomington. She lived in Palacios 20 years before, moving to Ganado 10 years ago. She is survived by her mother, Maria Garza of Palacios; two daughters, Yvette and Liza; grandmother, Rosaria Garza of Palacios; seven sisters, Mrs. Genovena Estrello and Mrs. Angie Samora of Palacios, Mrs. Romolo Garcia, Mrs. Lucio Sanchez, Rebecca, Rosalie and Teresa Garza, all of Houston and three brothers, Gilbert Garza of Palacios; Cesario of Freeport, Andres Jr. of Port Lavaca.

Funeral services for Mrs. Evelyn Simpson Rogers were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. R. Earl Price officiating. Mrs. Rogers, wife of Allen Rogers died Wednesday night, July 2, in the Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Interment was in the Palacios cemetery. She is survived by her husband; a son, Lee Roy Allen; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Simpson; a sister, Barbara Simpson; a brother, Charles Simpson, and her grandmother, Mrs. E. E. Williams.

Funeral services for Joseph William Rogers were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Saturday, July 13, at 2 p. m. with Rev. Mrs. Ruth Hickman, Rev. George Manross and Rev. Rayford Harris conducting the services. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. A son of M. E. and Naomi Walker Rogers, he was born February 6, 1909, at Red Bluff, Jackson County. A former employee at Western Auto, he operated a washateria for many years but due to failing eyesight had spent the past several years confined to his home and 1108 Fourth Street. He died Friday, July 12, at Wagner General Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Bell Rogers, his mother, Mrs. Naomi Rogers, both of Palacios, one daughter, Mrs. Gay Fields of Corpus Christi, one brother, T. M. Rogers of Gonzales and one grandchild.

Last rites for Milton E. Rogers were held at the First Baptist Church Thursday afternoon, January 27 at 2 p. m. with Rev. Rayford Harris and Rev. E. M. Walker conducting. Mr. Rogers, next to the youngest of 13 children, was born in Wise County near Fort Worth in 1876, here he grew to young manhood then moved to Red Bluff, Texas. In 1906 he was united in marriage to Miss Naomi Walker of Lolita and to this union were born three children, one of which departed this life in 1947. In 1911 they moved to Palacios where he farmed until 1917 when he entered the grocery business. He retired from this business in 1936. Mr. Rogers was a member of the Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Joe Rogers of Palacios and T. M. Rogers of Robstown, seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren; one brother, J. W. Rogers of Anadarko, Okla.; and two sisters, Mrs. D. O. Dodd of Bay City and Mrs. Eulah Jones of Louise.

Mr. M. E. Rogers Sr. a native of Tennessee, but who for the past fifty some years has been a resident of Texas, passed to the great and unknown beyond Sunday at 4:30 p. m. aged eighty six years and eleven months. Mr. Rogers, with his wife, moved to his home just west of Palacios, from Jackson county five years ago. He was in very good health for one of his years until last September when he fell and injured his hip from which injury he never recovered. The deceased leaves to mourn his loss his widow, three sons and six daughters, two sons and four daughters being present at the funeral, M. E. Rogers Jr., Palacios, R. H. Rogers, Edna, Mrs. J. H. Hamilton, Mrs. Dr. Wommack, Miss N. D. Rogers, Lolita, and Mrs. Will Jones, Edna. One daughter who lives in Bay City was ill and a son and daughter in Oklahoma were denied the privilege of beign with their father in his last days. Mr. Rogers was a life long member of the Baptist Church, still retaining his membership at Edna and his funeral was conducted by his former pastor, Rev. A. P. Smith of Edna, assisted by Rev. Gettys and undertaker M. K. Feather. The remains were tenderly laid to rest in the city cemetery.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 3 at the Palacios Funeral Chapel for Naomi Elizabeth Rogers, 94, of Palacios. Officiating were the Revs. J. R. Gwin and Robert Zumalt. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery. Mrs. Rogers died Aug. 31 at Matagorda General Hospital. She is survived by daughters-in-law Ruth Jendry of Palacios, Opal Rogers of Johnson City; sister, Ruth Thedford of Lolita; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and two great-great- grandchildren.

Miss Sarah Thompson was born in Tennessee in 1837, and departed his life Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1919. When 16 years of age she united with the Baptist Church of which she has been a loyal and consistent member all the days of her long and useful life. When about 20 years of age she was married to M. E. Rogers, Sr., father of our townsman M. E. Rogers, Jr., with whom both Mr. and Mrs. Rogers made their home for several years, Mr. Rogers having passed way a few years ago. About two weeks before Mrs. Rogers’ passing she went to visit a daughter, Mrs. Dodd, at Bay City, and on the day of her death seemed unusually well and cheerful, laughing and talking with the family and singing verses of songs. About two o’clock in the afternoon she complained of a pain in her side and in a half hour was gone, suffering very little, being conscious to the last moment—a beautiful ending for a long life full of love, happiness and service for others. The body was brought to Palacios where funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Echols, her pastor, and the body laid of rest by the side of her husband who had preceded her but a few years.

Funeral services for Fred Roiko were held at 11 a. m. Friday, September 7 at the Palacios Funeral home with the Rev. Jerry Lyons officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. A son of Andrew and Hilma Nassi Roiko, he was born June 16, 1906, in Finland. He came to the United States when about 15 years of age. He served in the Air Force during World War II and for 29 years has been employed by Salt Dome Production Company and while in their employ lived in Palacios for many years, and purchased a duplex at 409 Lucas. He had been in Palacios last week looking after his property and had just returned to Morgan City, La. where he died of a heart attack September 4. He is survived by a brother, Alfred Roiko of Fitchburg, Mass. and three brothers in Finland and one sister, Mrs. Selma Kantola of Irvington, New Jersey.

Rosary was recited at Rendon Funeral Home Sunday at 7:30 p. m. Born April 10, 1910, in Portland to the late Mr. and Mrs. Fustino Rojas, he lived most of his life in Palacios. A resident of Victoria the past seven years, he died in a hospital there Saturday morning after a long illness. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Pete Ramirez of Portland and Mrs. Charles Bly of Rosenberg; four sons, Lupe Rojas of Palacios, Henry Rojas of Rockport, Marcelino and Santiago Rojas of Portland; five sisters, Mrs. Louis Munoz of Victoria, Mrs. Eusebio Figuorra of Ganado, Mrs. Charles Longoria of Palacios, Mrs. Ruben Mungia of Houston and Mrs. Pete Rocha of Pasadena; one brother, Faustino Rojas of Houston and 20 grandchildren.

Antonio Rojas was killed Tuesday night about 10:20 by Frank Alvarez. The shooting took place just east of Fred Garcia’s Café on Main street. Three shots were fired, one going through Rojas body piercing his heart, and he was dead when officers arrived on the scene. It is said Antonio, his two brothers, and Alvarez had been having trouble for several days preceding Tuesday night’s shooting. Alvarez was soon located and put under arrest.

Funeral services for Antonio U. Rojas, Sr., 58 of Palacios, were held Aug. 15 at 1 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Fernando Aleman and Rev. Walt Morgan officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery. Wake services were held Aug. 14 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel at 8 p. m. Rojas, a lifelong resident of Palacios, was born Aug. 9, 1928 in Matagorda County. He died Aug. 13, 1986 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Victoria. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having services in the U. S. Army. Survivors include his wife, Delia Deivla Rojas of Palacios; four daughters, Mary Martinez and Cindy Rodriguez, both of Palacios, Terry Marroquin of Bay City and Debbie Streback of Houston; three sons, Antonio Rojas, Jr. of El Campo and Leroy Rojas and Faustino Rojas, both of Palacios; one sister, Pauline Jara of Beaumont and 15 grandchildren.

Mr. Rojas was born in Refugio County on Feb. 18, 1914 a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Faustino Rojas. He had resided in Palacios most of his life. He passed away at 5:45 a. m. Sunday after a short illness. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Isabel Rojas of Victoria, two brothers, Faustino Rojas of Houston and Alejandro Rojas of Victoria; five sisters, Mrs. Charlie Longoria of Palacios, Mrs. Louis Munoz of Victoria, Mrs. Pete Rocha and Mrs. Ruben G. Munguia, both of Houston and Mrs. Eusibio Figueroa of Ganado.

A 1 ½-year old boy died Sunday from injuries after a tragic accident when a vehicle left in neutral pinned him against a wall. Leroy Rojas, Jr., son of Leroy and Anita Ann Ester Rojas of Longview, was rushed to Wagner General Hospital where he died of internal injuries a short time later. According to police reports, the youngster was preparing to go to church with his grandparents and was standing near the vehicle. The vehicle had been started and put in neutral and the driver had gotten out to help others into the car. The vehicle reportedly started rolling and pinned the youngster against a wall. The boy had been staying with his grandparents while his parents remained in Longview expecting their second child. The parents were at the hospital concerning Mrs. Rojas’ pregnancy at the time of the accident. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 10 a. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Eddie Cude officiating. Burial will follow in Palacios Cemetery. Rojas was born May 5, 1980 in Palacios. Survivors include his parents; paternal grandparents, Tony and Delia Rojas of Palacios; maternal grandparents Kenneth and Carolyn Ester of Mount Pleasant.

Lee Zepeda Rosas was born Aug. 28, 1920 to Miguel and Antonia Rosas Zepeda and he passed away on Feb. 26, 2017. He is survived by his wife Josephine Rosas, daughters, Janie Bustos, Estella Lerma, Samantha Kutach, Patsy Hernandez, Maria Daffninrud, Terri Zuniga, Diana Gaytan, Cathy Garcia, Sarah Garcia and Yvette Oconnor; sons, Michael Rosas, Edward Ramos, and James Ramos; and 32 [grand?]children. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Cynthia Ramos, sons Larry Ramos and Jessie Ramos; and sisters Carmen Garza, Cruz Rubio and Inocencia Ramirez.

Memorial services for Jane Burton Roseland, 54, of San Antonio were held Dec. 19 in the First Presbyterian Church of Palacios with Rev. Dough Blanton officiating. Mrs. Roseland was born in Bay City on Aug. 31, 1938. She died Dec. 16, 1992. She is attended school in Palacios, Port Lavaca, Austin College of Sherman, Texas and the University of Houston. She is survived by her husband, Paul Luther Roseland, Jr. of San Antonio; parents, Matthew and Betty Burton; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Edward A. Burton; sister Virginia French, six nephews and five cousins all of Lockhart; brother, Dr. J. A. Burton of Clemson, South Carolina; aunt and uncle, Thelma and Leland Stevenson of Austin; father-in-law, Paul L. Roseland, Sr. of San Antonio and sister-in-law, Nancy Donaldson of Houston. Funeral services for Bill Ross were held at 3 p. m. Friday, October 12, in the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. J. M. Dawson of Needville officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. A resident of Palacios for many years, he was born May 27, 1907, in Davidson, Oklahoma, a son of D. W. and Sallie E. Fletcher Ross. He died Wednesday, October 10, in Citizens Memorial Hospital in Victoria after a lingering illness. He is survived by his mother of Palacios, one brother, Don Ross of Corpus Christi and two sisters, Mrs. Clyde Aldrich of Tyler and Mrs. Jane Newton of Victoria.
