Melvin Polk

Funeral services for Melvin Polk, 87, of Palacios, were held Aug. 26, 1996 at Pilgrim Rose Baptist Church in Palacios with the Rev. T. K. Hart officiating. Interment was at Palacios Cemetery.

Mr. Polk is survived by five daughters, Velva Jedkins, Hattie Edwards and Bessie Evans, all of Houston, Olivia King of Los Angeles and Annie Doris Thomas of Palacios; and two sons, Robert L. Polk of Houston and Dwight Polk of Palacios.

Sylvester Polk

Funeral services for Sylvester Polk, 77, of Palacios were to be held at 1 p. m. March 26, 1996 at the Pilgrim Rose Baptist Church.

Mr. Polk was born Sept. 13, 1918 in Altair, Texas. He died March 21, 1996.

For more than 40 years Mr. Polk lived and worked in Palacios as a laborer, neighbor and friend.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Alice Polk; seven sons: Glenn Fields, Robert Israel, Leonard, Sylvester, Charles, Townsend (Bo) and Billy Polk; seven daughters: Mozetta Polk, Millie Ford, Kathleen Travis, Brenda Martin, Phyllis Leloup, Jessie Williams, and Debbie Polk; three sisters: Etta Mae Haynes, Lovie Moore and Dorie Polk; two brothers, Willie Polk and Oscar Polk; five sisters-in-law; five brothers-in-law; seven daughters-in-law; three sons-in-law; 34 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Archie Herschel Poston

Funeral services for Herschel Poston were held at 3 p. m. Thursday, June 24, at the First Baptist Church in Palacios with the Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating.

Born October 2, 1911, in Fort Worth, he had been a resident of Deutschburg community for many years. He was a self-employed contractor. He died Monday night in a Victoria hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Vera Mae Poston of Deutschburg, his mother, Mrs. Eva K. Poston of Sweetwater; a daughter, Mrs. Larry Pipe of Nigeria, Africa; two sisters, Mrs. Pauline Smith of Sweetwater and Mrs. Corrine Faulkner of Dallas; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Vera Mae Poston

Funeral services for Vera Mae Poston, 81, of Dallas, are scheduled for 2 p. m. Thursday at the Palacios Funeral Home in Palacios with the Rev. Hollis Hoffman officiating. Burial will follow in Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Poston was born June 10, 1921 in Oletha, near Grosbeck, to William and Ethel Alewine Hall and died Feb. 21, 1994, in Dallas.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. W. D. LaRoche “Skee” of Dallas; a niece, Patricia Ann LaRoche of Dallas; a nephew, Paul Alan LaRoche of McKinney; a grandnephew, a grandniece, a son-in-law, two grandsons, two great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Services Held Thurs. For Ernest Powell, 75, Long-Time Resident

Funeral services for Ernest Powell were held at 2 p. m. Thursday, February 11 at the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. John Berkley officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A resident of Palacios for many years, he was born March 4, 1889 in Fisher County, Texas. He died in Wagner General Hospital February 9 after an extended illness.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Anna Williams of Round Rock, Texas; three brothers, Dee Powell of Palacios, Fred Powell of Bay City and Hugh Powell of Athens, Texas.

Julia Powell, Pioneer Palacios Resident, Buried Here Tuesday

Funeral services were held at 11 a. m. Tuesday for Mrs. Julia Adeline Powell at the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. John Brannon, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Powell was born July 23, 1891 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Nelson. She died Sunday, May 5, in Boerne, Texas.

Survivors include her husband, Ernest Powell, one sister, Mrs. Fred Pybus of Velasco; three brothers, M. R., C. W. and C. E. Nelson of McAllen.

Mary Frances Powell

Funeral services for Mary Frances Powell, 60, of Palacios, were held January 18, 1992 at Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Stacy Houser officiating. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Powell was born Jan. 31, 1931 to Thomas Edward and Fannie V. Cardwell Abbe in Big Springs, Tex. She died Jan. 16, 1992 at a Houston hospital.

A resident of Palacios for 17 years, she was a member of the Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Milton W. Powell of Palacios; one daughter, Linda D. Vernon of Palacios; two sons, Gary Wayne Powell of Palacios and Milton R. Powell of Corpus Christi; and one granddaughter, Mary W. Vernon of Palacios.

Funeral Services For Mrs. Elsie May Powers Held Here Wednesday

Funeral services for Mrs. Elsie Mae Powers were held at the Palacios Funeral Home at 3 p. m. Wednesday, January 22 with the Rev. John Berkley officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Born July 28, 1891 in Haigler, Nebr., she had been a resident of this area since 1908. She passed away Monday, January 20 in the Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

Survivors include her husband, Frank J. Powers of Palacios; three daughters, Mrs. Cleddie Harvey of Palacios, Mrs. Laure Harvey of Bay City and Mrs. Maxine Schooley of Victoria; three sons, J. E. And Wilburn Powers of Port Neches, and Eldon Powers of Houston; two sisters, Mrs. Velma Steacy of Houston and Mrs. Zepha LeColley of Cuero, 13 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Little Frank Powers

The home-going of little Frank Powers, four year old son of Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Powers, came Wednesday of last week and the remains were tenderly laid to rest in Palacios Cemetery Thursday afternoon. Many loved ones and friends were present and the funeral services were conducted by Rev. G. F. Gillespie. Frank was suddenly taken with an illness, which lasted only two days, when the end came. Sincere sympathy is extended to the fond parents and relatives in their bereavement.

Funeral Services Held For Frank J. Powers, Pioneer Area Resident

Funeral services for Frank Jerod Powers were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Saturday afternoon, April 30, at 3 o’clock with the Rev. John Berkley officiating.

A resident of this area since 1908, he was born in Netawaka, Kansas, on February 22, 1891, the son of Wilbur Jerod and Mary Heiser Powers. He died Thursday, April 28, in the Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Fern Harvey of Palacios, Mrs. Faye Harvey and Mrs. Maxine Bryan of Bay City; three sons, J. Elbert Powers, Wilbur Powers of Port Neches and Eldon Powers of Houston and one sister, Mrs. Mary Sewell of Halton, Kansas.

Mrs. W. J. Powers – Mary Viola Heiser Powers

Mrs. Mary Viola Heiser Powers died at her home, eight miles northeast of Palacios, Sunday, Feb. 7, 1932 at 2:45 p. m. She was born at Lena, Ill., Dec. 16, 1859, and was married to Mr. Wilbur J. Powers, Jan. 6, 1887, at Kingston, Mo.

Mrs. Powers united with the Methodist Church at an early age, and lived a consistent Christian life. She loved her home and family, was a devoted wife and mother, loyal friend and neighbor and her passing on is mourned by a host of friends, besides the husband, one daughter, Mrs. May Sewell of Wetmore, Kan., one son, Frank Powers of Palacios, eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One daughter and one grandson have preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held at the home on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Payne, pastor of the Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. J. l. Watson of the Central  Baptist Church. The remains were conveyed to the Palacios cemetery, and after a short service at the grave, tenderly laid to rest.

Thomas E. Powers, 21, Killed In Car Wreck, Buried Here Tuesday

Funeral services for Thomas Eldon Powers, grandson of the late Frank Powers, were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Tuesday, October 11, at 4 p. m. with the Rev. M. R. Zirkel, Jr. officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Born January 14, 1945 in Galveston he was fatally injured in a car accident in Houston Sunday, October 9.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Linda Powers; son Lawrence Lee Powers; mother, Mrs. Ima Jean Wallace; father, Eldon Powers and one brother, Eddie Powers, all of Houston.

W. J. Powers

Wilbur Jerod Powers, who passed away at his home near Palacios, Tex., Friday, Aug. 17, following an illness of only a few days, was born in Mayville, Wis., March 8, 1953. He moved to Kansas in 1866 where he was a pioneer and made that state his home until 1908 when he with his family moved to Texas and located near Palacios.

He was married Jan. 6, 1887, and was preceded in death by his wife in 1932 and one daughter Mrs. Emma Sewell. Two children survive, Mrs. Hubert Sewell, of Whitemore, Kas., and F. J. Powers, of Palacios He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Miranda Symons, of Moreland, Okla., and Mrs. Heatha Wright, of Netawaka, Kans. and one brother, Jean Powers, of Piedmont, Kas., eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday at 3 p. m. from the Palacios Funeral Home conducted by Rev. E. F. Kluck, pastor of the Methodist Church and members of the Palacios A. F. & A. M. of which he was a member. Burial was made in the Palacios cemetery under the direction of the Palacios Funeral Home.

James Wesley Preslar

Funeral services for James Wesley Preslar were held Monday, March 30 at 2 p. m. at the Richardson Funeral Home Chapel in Port Lavaca. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A former resident of Palacios, he was born August 21, 1889, in Oklahoma and had been a resident of Port O’Connor since 1942. He died in a Port Lavaca hospital Saturday morning.

Survivors include a son, Clifford Preslar of Pecos; a daughter, Mrs. Doris Stapp of Alta Loma; a sister, Mrs. Effie Gann of Fresno, Calif. and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife and a son, Billy Lynn.

Mary Viola Preslar

Mary Viola Preslar, beloved wife of J. W. Preslar, died at the hospital in Bay City, Tuesday at 2:45 A M., aged 36 years, 5 months and 23 days. Besides her husband she is survived by one daughter, Doris, two sons, Clifford and Billy, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Griffin of Robstown, Texas, one sister, Mrs. E. B. Hogg, and one brother, A. B. Griffin of this city.

The remains were prepared for burial and brought to Palacios by Taylor Bros. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 3:30 p. m., in the service room of the Palacios Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. J. Roy Williams, and Rev. R Paine, of the Methodist Church. Interment was made in the Palacios cemetery under the direction of the Palacios Funeral Home.

The Beacon joins the many friends in extending heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family and relatives.

N. P. Pressler Dies In Hospital At Bay City

N. P. Presslar, who was taken to the hospital in Bay City last week seriously ill, died on Monday afternoon and the remains were brought here Tuesday for burial. Funeral services were held at the home on Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. A. Derrick, pastor of the First Baptist Church, with the male quartet of his church furnishing the music. Interment took place in the Palacios cemetery.

Nathaniel Parker Presslar was born in Bell county, Texas, December 15, 1872 and died in Bay City, Texas, September 24, 1928. He was married to Miss Lina Gardner about 32 years ago and to this union were born five children. On January 20, 1923 he was married to Miss Bertha Sanford, who with one little daughter, Melba Sue, survive.

He became a member of the Christian Church at Blair, Okla., about 18 years ago. Since coming to Palacios about a year ago Mr. Preslar had been an assistant in the barber shop now owned by A. G. Smith.

Besides the wife and six children he also leaves a mother, six brothers, and one sister to mourn his departure and to whom the sympathy of the entire community is extended.

Former Constable Adam “Bubba” Price Dies

Former longtime Matagorda County Pct. 3 Constable Adam “Bubba” Price, 73, of Palacios, died Jan. 12, 1998 at Matagorda House Nursing Home in Bay City.

Mr. Price served 20 years as Pct. 3 Constable. He assumed office on Jan. 1, 1977 and served through Dec. 31, 1996.

A longtime resident of Palacios, he had been an active member of the community, having served on the Palacios City Council as well as working with the Civil Defense in 1961 during Hurricane Carla. He also volunteered for many community projects.

Price was born Feb. 1, 1924 in Saratoga, Texas to the late Adam I. and Elina E. Pichoff Price. He was a U. S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II and retired from Sun Oil with 38 years of service. He also served as Matagorda County Deputy Sheriff.

Price was also a member of the Catholic Church and a 40-year member of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by a sister, Beatrice L. Outlaw of Fairfield; nieces E. Olivia Duelm of Palacios, Ellen Cremons of Littleton, Colo., Tommie Lynn Wannamanker of Colorado Springs, Colo.; nephews James F. Outlaw of Bushy Creek, Oswald L. Outlaw of Fairfield, and Burle Outlaw of Indianapolis, Ind.; and numerous great nieces and nephews as well as great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Ethel Claybourn.

Funeral services were held Jan. 15 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tony Flores officiating. Interment was at Palacios Cemetery.

Pallbearers were George Franguille, Jimmy Smith, George Cartwright, Joe Reyna and Julius Aguilar.

Fannie M. Price

Graveside services for Mrs. Fannie M. Price were held at 2:30 p. m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, in the Palacios Cemetery with Rev. Elroy Weikel officiating.

A former resident of Palacios she was born Aug. 20, 1903 in Markham and died Sunday, Nov. 5 in Bay Villa Nursing Home in Bay City.

Survivors include her husband O. B. Price of Houston, a son, Richard L. Erekson of Palacios; a daughter, Mrs. Estelle Davidson of Las Cruces, New Mexico; a brother, Otis Hodges of Palacios; Two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Mrs. Robt. L. Price Dies of Heart Attack After Car Accident - Norma Lilla Harris Price

Mrs. Robert L. Price died Monday morning o f a heart attack at the Bay View Hospital, where she was recuperating from injuries sustained in a two-car accident last Thursday afternoon.

Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Church Wednesday afternoon, July 27, at three o’clock and burial was in the Palacios Cemetery. The Rev. Richard Stone and Rev. Carroll B. Ray, her son-in-law, officiating at the religious service.

Norma Lilla Harris was born April 5, 1887, at Shiloh, Texas, the daughter of Mary Miller Harris and James Carter Harris. After the death of her father, she lived in Alexander, Texas, for ten years where her mother was postmistress. Afterwards they resided in Avoca and Stamford, Texas.

She was married to Robert L. Price on June 16, 1909, and moved to Collegeport, where they made their home until 1913, when they moved to Palacios, where they have lived for the past forty-seven years.

A devoted wife and mother, she was a active worker in the First Presbyterian Church and the Wednesday Club, and until her husband’s retirement, she assisted him in the Price Hardware.

She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Price; four daughters, Mrs. Maxine Ray of Perryton, Texas; Mrs. Bobbye Louise Babcock, Austin; Mrs. Nancy Sisson, LaCanada, Calif. and Mrs. Cherry Waldrep, Austin; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Robert L. Price, 80, Former Businessman, Buried Here Tuesday

Funeral services for Robert L. Price, a pioneer Palacios citizen, were held at 2 p. m. Monday, September 28, at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Richard E. Stone officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Robert L. Price, son of Thomas Albert and Nancy Kight Price, was born in Eddy, Texas, on October 5, 1884, and passed away on September 26, 1964 in Pampa, Texas. His parents moved to Stephenville, Texas, when he was three years of age. He attended the public schools of Stephenville, and later took a business course at what is now known as John Tarleton College.

On June, 16, 1909, he married Norma Lilla Harris of Stamford, Texas, who preceded him in death on July 25, 1960. The couple moved to Collegeport in the year 1909 and on to Palacios in 1913, where he engaged in the lumber, hardware, and building contract business until his retirement.

Four daughters were born to this union, namely, (Maxine) Mrs. Carroll B. Ray of Pampa, Texas; (Bobby) Mrs. Frank E. Babcock of Austin, Texas; (Nancy) Mrs. Harry H. Sisson of New Orleans, Louisiana; and (Cherry) Mrs. Burnell Waldrep of Austin, Texas, all of whom survive him. Nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren survive.

Mr. Price was a long time member and deacon of the Presbyterian Church of Palacios. Through the years he has also served in many civil capacities in the Palacios community.
