Funeral services for John Pena of Victoria, a former law officer in Palacios, were held at 11 a. m. Wednesday, November 19, at the Palacios Funeral Home. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. A resident of Victoria for six months, Pena was born May 26, 1920, in Palacios to Mrs. Angela Solis and the late Nicolous Solis. He died unexpectedly Monday night, November 17, in a Victoria hospital. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sheila Pena, a daughter, Mrs. Geraldine Leal, both of Victoria; his mother and a sister, Mrs. Viola Benavides of Palacios and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the First United Methodist Church at 2 p. m. Sunday, January 2, for John Maurice Pennington with Rev. Carl L. W. Israel and Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. A life long resident of Matagorda County, he was born February 28, 1907, in Bay City, son of Frank and Mary Elizabeth Phillips Pennington. A retired self-employed water well driller, he died Thursday night, December 30 in Wagner General Hospital after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife, Nerva Pennington of Palacios; two sons, Harold Pennington of Houston and John Edward Pennington of Kingsville; two step daughters, Nita Ross of Tulsa, Okla. and Georgene Brandon of Houston; one sister, Mrs. Frances Serrill of Matagorda and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services for Meta Baxter Pennington were held at the First United Methodist Church at 10:30 a. m. Tuesday, May 9, with the Rev. Thomas E. Connolly officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. A native of Palacios, she was born November 6, 1905, a daughter of David and Carrie Spoor Baxter. She passed away in Wagner General Hospital Saturday, May 6, of an apparent heart attack. She is survived by her husband, John of Palacios; two sons, John Edward of Kingsville and Harold B. of Houston and one sister, Margie Dow of Houston.

Funeral services for Nerva Stubblefield Pennington, 71, were held Nov. 4 at 2:30 p. m. in the First Baptist Church with Rev. Ronnie Floyd officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery. Mrs. Pennington, a resident of the Palacios area since the early 1900’s, was born Dec. 23, 1910 and died suddenly on Nov. 2, 1982 in Palacios. Mrs. Pennington was married on Aug. 3, 1928 to George Stubblefield, who was a prominent rice farmer in Matagorda County. He was a member of the Palacios school board. He died in 1962. She was later married to John Pennington, who also preceded her in death. Mrs. Pennington was a member of the First Baptist Church and Eastern Star and had been active in many community organizations. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Nita & Hardy Ross and Georgene & Tom Brandon, all of Houston; twin brother, Henry Ervie Harvey of Zavalla; four grandchildren, Karen Ross Oswalt of Austin, George Hardy Ross, Ross Reynolds Brandon and Stephen Duffy Brandon, all of Houston; and two great grandchildren, Sara Oswalt and Claire Oswalt, both of Austin. Pallbearers were Dickie Lang, Clayton Lee, Harold Hunt, Bert Miller, Dan Tucker and Hoyt Theus.

Palacios—Pauline Pequeno, 82, of Palacios, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000. She was born March 6, 1917, in Matagorda, to the late Louis Martino and Donna Ottino. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. Survivors: husband, Severiano Pequeno; daughter, Mary Fountain; sisters, Rose Tobias of Palacios and Julia Garcia of Victoria; brother, John Martino of Palacios; and two grandchildren. Funeral services for Pedro G. Pequeno, 64, were held October 18 at 10 a. m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Rev. Jospeh Pham duc Tranh officiating. A rosary service was held at 7 p. m. on Oct. 17 at the Palacios Funeral Home. Pequeno, the son of Joaquin Pequeno and Juanita Guerrero, was a fisherman. He was a resident of Palacios since 1935 and a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Alice Ayarzagoitia Pequeno of Palacios; one daughter, Lisa Pequeno of Palacios; one son, Julius Pequeno of Brownsville; two sisters, Dolores Sawhak of Castroville and Ingnacia Hernandez of San Antonio; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services for Severiano Pequeno were held at 11 a. m. Saturday, February 13 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Patrick O’Farrell celebrant at the requiem mass. Interment followed in the Palacios Cemetery. Born August 23, 1917 in New Braunfels, Texas, to Juaquin and Juanita Pequeno, he died suddenly of a cerebral hemorrhage about 9 a. m. Friday, February 12 in the Bayview Hospital while visiting his mother, who was seriously ill. She passed away Saturday morning while services were being held for her son. Survivors include his wife, the former Pauline Martino, who he married February 19, 1942, and their daughter, Helen; two sisters, Mrs. Pedro Hernandez and Mrs. Wes. Sawchak; three brothers, Juaquin, Jr., Pete and Vicente Pequeno.

Mrs. Peres was born Sept. 16, 1908, in San Benito to Fidencio and Antonia Garcia Rodriguez and died March 5, 1994, in the Lake Jackson Health Care Center. She was a lifelong resident of Palacios and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. Survivors include two sons, John Peres Jr. and his wife, Jeanean of West Columbia and Edward G. Peres of Nigeria; a sister, Lupe Acuna of Corpus Christi; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Peres, on Sept. 22, 1974. Friends of John J. Peres, Sr., were saddened when they learned of his untimely death Sunday, Sept. 22, about 9 p. m. in Wagner General Hospital. Rosary was recited at 8 p. m. For many years he owned and operated Port Shipyard. After selling his interests he had worked for Ed Barrett at Palacios Machine Shop & Shipyard. At the time of his death he was recuperating after having had a leg amputated. He is survived by his wife, Ella of Palacios; two sons, John J. Peres Jr. of La Porte and Eddie Peres of Amsterdam, Holland; one sister, Mary Chupe of Rockport; one brother, U. T. Peres of Rockport; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services for Ascencion Costilla Perez were held Wednesday, March 9 at 2:30 p. m. at the VFW Hall and at 3 p. m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church where Requiem Mass was offered by the Rev. Michael Harrold. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. Rosary was recited Tuesday night at the VFW Hall. A native of Mexico, he was born April 13, 1888. When 18 years of age he came to this area where he farmed and was a commercial fisherman. He died Tuesday morning at 1:30 in Wagner General Hospital. Survivors include his wife: Asnastastia Perez of Palacios; two daughters, Mrs. Cruz Carmelo of Dickinson and Mrs. Dominga Gonzales of Palacios; six sons, Trine of Dickinson, Paul of De Witt, Arkansas; Henry of Houston; Victor, Mike and Valentine of Palacios; a sister, Mrs. Frances Martinez and a brother, Juan Perez, both of Palacios; 35 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Perez was born July 15, 1902 in Goliad and died April 10, 1984. Mrs. Perez was born Nov. 16, 1950 in Victoria, the daughter of Francisco and Francisca Bocanegra Gamez. She died Nov. 14, 1985 at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston. Mrs. Perez was a resident of Palacios for 17 years and was Catholic. Survivors include her husband, Joe Perez, Jr. of Palacios; mother, Francisca Gamez of Bay City; one daughter, Kathy Jo Perez of Palacios; one son, Joe Perez III of Palacios; three sisters, Matilda Grajando, Isabel Benevedez and Gloria De La Rosa, all of Bay City; two brothers, Joe Gamez and Victor Gamez; 16 nephews and six nieces. Paul Perez was a fatal victim of fire early Saturday morning in which the small home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Asencion Perez, was completely destroyed. The house was aflame when the fire was discovered and the alarm given. Perez was living in Bloomington with his wife and baby and had come here to look for employment and a place for his family to move into. His parents and small brothers had gone to Kemah and Seabrook to spend the week end with two of their sons, and Paul was spending the night in their home. Funeral services for the victim were held Monday morning at 10 in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Father Anthony Costantino officiating at the last rites. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery. A native of Palacios, Perez had lived here except while serving in the Navy and the short time he had lived in Bloomington. He is survived by his wife and small daughter, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ascencion Perez of Palacios; six brothers, Pablo of Port Lavaca, Henry of Kemah, Trino of Seabrook, Victor, Mike and Valentine of Palacios and two sisters, Mrs. Dominga Gonzales of Palacios and Mrs. Cruz Carmelo of California.

An apparent drowning claimed the life of a 51-year old Palacios man whose body was found in near the East Bay boat ramp Christmas Eve. Pronounced dead at the scene was Joe Alvarez Perez of 1106 Ritchie. An autopsy, ordered by Justice of the Peace D. B. Hinton, ruled the death a drowning. Perez’s body was found at approximately 12:41 p. m. Dec. 24 by a man who had gone to the bay to check the tide levels. According to reports, the body had been in the water for at least 8-10 hours.

Funeral services for Juan Castillo Perez, 83, were held March 9 at 10 a. m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Father Larry Matula officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery. Perez, the son of Santos and Adislada Castillo Perez, was born May 27, 1901 in Mexico. He died March 6, 1984 at Caney Valley Hospital in Wharton. A rosary service was held March 8 at 7:30 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel. Perez was a member of the Catholic Church and had been a resident of Palacios for 50 years. Survivors include three daughters, Janie Pena of Wharton and Francis Rodriguez and Delfina Losoya, both of Palacios; 24 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Grandsons were pallbearers.

Manuel Odon Perez passed away Wednesday, May 23 at 4 p. m. in Wagner General Hospital following a long illness. Rosary was recited Friday at 8:30 p. m. at the Rendon Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services were held Saturday at 1 p. m. at the funeral home chapel and at 1:15 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Armand Florizoone officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. Mr. Peres was born in Ramones, Nuevo Leon, Mexico on July 22, 1890. A resident of Palacios since 1917, he was a retired rancher. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Mary Buckley of Palacios; a son, Martin Perez of San Antonio; a brother, Jose Maria Perez of Ramones, Nuevo Leon, Mex.; eight grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

She was the daughter of Fernando Alvarez and Basilia Orangel. She had been a resident of Palacios for 65 years. Survivors include her husband, Juan C. Perez of Palacios; three daughters, Janie Pena of Wharton, Francis Rodriguez of Palacios and Delfina Losoya of Palacios; one son, Tony Perez of Palacios; two sisters, Mercedos Morales of Palacios and Ignaca Ramirez of Beaumont; 23 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
