Four Killed in 2-Car Accident on Hwy. 35-N
Three Palacians Among Fatalities

By Nick West, Beacon Publisher

Four people were killed, including two young brothers, and a fifth injured in a fiery-two car collision Sunday afternoon on a rain soaked stretch of Hwy. 35 approximately a quarter-mile north of Palacios.

According to a Department of Public Safety spokesperson, the two children, ages 8 and 7, were riding in a 1983 Datsun two-door being driven by a relative when it was involved in a collision with a 1989 Jeep Wrangler in which a Corpus Christi couple was riding.

All three occupants of the Datsun were killed. They were identified as the driver, Huy Pham, 28, of Palacios; and his nephews Dong Duy Nguyen, 8, and Doan Duy Nguyen, 7, both of Palacios. The two brothers were both students at Central Elementary.

All three were pronounced dead at the scene by Pct. 3 Justice of the Peace Margaret McElrath at 3:55 p. m.

The fourth fatality was identified as Ellen Waters Olson, 27 of Corpus Christi, a passenger in the Jeep driven by her husband. She was taken to Wagner General Hospital and then Life-Flighted to Herman Hospital in Houston where she was pronounced dead at 8:23 p. m. Sunday.

Her husband, Peter Olson, a 27-year old Naval pilot, was taken by PVFD ambulance to Wagner General Hospital and later transferred to Matagorda General Hospital. According to the DPS spokesman, Olson was listed in fair condition with massive facial lacerations.

The DPS said none of those in the accident were wearing seatbelts.

The fatal accident occurred at approximately 3:28 p. m. Sunday. According to the DPS spokesman, Pham was traveling northbound on Hwy. 35 in the Datsun and Olson was going southbound. According to the DPS report, Pham apparently lost control of his vehicle which spun into the southbound land where it was struck on the rear side by the Jeep. The Datsun then spun around once, throwing Pham from the vehicle. The car then erupted into flames on the side of the road from a ruptured fuel tank.

The accident was investigated by DPS Trooper Mark Provo and Trooper Southall.

Funeral services for the three Palacios residents are scheduled for Thursday.

Police Seek Information Into Accident That Claimed Lives of Two Young Boys

Two young brothers, ages six and three, were killed and four other individuals injured last Wednesday following a two-car accident in which investigators believe may have been caused by a third vehicle.

The accident which occurred around 4:50 p. m. at the intersection of Henderson and 7th Streets claimed the lives of John Nguyen, 6, and his three-year old brother, Jimmy Nguyen of Palacios. Both youths were rear seat passengers in the 1986 Cadillac driven by their mother, Le Hoa Thi Bui, 25, who suffered minor injuries. A third passenger in the car, Mary Linda Bui, 14, sister of Le Bui, was taken to Wagner General Hospital and later transferred to Hermann Hospital in Houston with internal injuries, lacerations and fractures.

Also transferred to Hermann Hospital with facial lacerations was Danielle Ard, 14, a passenger in the second vehicle, 1989 Chevrolet mini-van, driven by her sister, Paulette Ard, 18, who sustained minor injuries and was taken to WGH.

According to investigator Rick Brush of the Palacios Police Department, Le Bui was travelling westbound on rain-dampened Henderson when a third vehicle reportedly veered into her lane, forcing her into the eastbound lane. Brush said the Bui vehicle apparently skidded after hitting a wet spot on the road, and slipped sideways into the path of the van driven by Paulette Ard. The van collided into the right side of Bui's car, striking it between the front and rear doors on the passenger side.

Neither of the fatality victims were wearing seatbelts, according to investigators.

Det. Brush said that investigators are seeking information on the third vehicle which may have caused the accident. He said the driver of that vehicle may not have been aware of the accident which took place.

A  large gathering of on-lookers converged on the scene as members of the Palacios VFD and the Palacios Area Emergency Medical Service responded to the accident. Rescue workers had to use the Jaws of Life equipment to free both Le Bui and her sister who were pinned inside the wreckage.

Individuals who may have witnessed the accident and may have seen the third vehicle are asked to contact either Det. Brush or Sgt. Timmy Tobias at the Palacios Police Dept.

Drowning Claims 6-Year Old Boy Thursday Evening - Khang Van Nguyen

The body of a six-year old Palacios boy was recovered from Turning Basin No. 1 Friday morning, approximately 11 hours after he first disappeared.

Searchers discovered the body of Khang Van Nguyen floating close to the shrimp boats at the Texas Shrimp Company at 7:45 a. m. Friday. Authorities were preparing to resume their search and start dragging operations in the basin when the body was found.

A two-hour search by members of the Palacios VFD, police department, game wardens and dozens of private individuals had been called off late Thursday night due to darkness.

Khang, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Linh Van Nguyen, was reported missing by his family at 8:45 p. m. Thursday. He had been playing aboard his family's docked shrimp boat while his parents and other relatives worked on some boat repairs. According to police information, the youngster was last seen by his uncle at 8:30 p. m.

Police Sgt. Tommy Tobias said that when the family realized Khang was missing, they searched the surrounding docking area and looked on nearby shrimp boats. A family member was also sent back to their residence on the chance that the youngster may have returned home by some means.

Unable to locate the boy, the family notified the police department, Tobias, along with several members of the Palacios VFD, arrived at the scene and commenced searching the area once again. They were joined by approximately 60 persons from the Vietnamese community as well as game wardens Paul Meismer and Jack Langdon.

Aided by large flood lights held over the side of nearby boats, Don Hyett donned scuba gear and searched the murky waters in the area.

Because of the limited visibility, the search efforts were called off at 10:30 p. m. and scheduled to resume Friday morning. it was while searchers were waiting for a boat to be launched to begin dragging operations Friday morning that Police Chief Jim Wilson found the body floating in the water.
