George W. Miller, Jr.
September 21, 1934 - July 19, 2004

George Walter Miller, Jr. went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ Monday, July 19, 2004.

He was born September 21, 1934, in Olivia, to the late George W. Miller, Sr. and Alma C. Wilson Miller.

He grew up on his parents' farm near Palacios and helped his father farm cotton and grain. He became a business man at a young age, buying an old used truck and starting his own hay business, buying and selling and hauling hay. He soon purchased a dump truck and began hauling dirt and gravel. In the early 1950's he went to work for Smith Brothers dredging where Dempsey Birmingham broke him in on a dragline for the first time. He was a natural and a fast learner. Around 1956, he went to work for King Fisher Marine. He learned to operate many different types of machinery and became a loyal, dedicated employee that Mr. Fisher had confidence in to send to the toughest jobs anywhere the company was working, day, night, or both, and know the job would get done. George and Mr. Fisher developed a lifetime friendship and he was proud to count Mr. King Fisher as one of his closest friends.

Eventually George would return to his roots, farming. He farmed rice in association with A. L. Clark and G. A. "Smiley" Jennings as well as on his own. He also assembled a fleet of grain trucks and drivers and operated a grain trucking business. He farmed for several years before accepting a position at First National Bank in Port Lavaca. He made many friends throughout the community during his time at the bank. He never hesitated to help people in need and was known as a fair loan officer who would always help hard working people. One of his favorite sayings was, "I'll help anybody as long as they try to help themselves."

He retired from the bank in 1980. He remained active in many civic organizations including the Lions Club, Calhoun County Tax Appraisal Board as well as numerous other organizations.

In 1982 he took over Miller Seafood in Seadrift from his brother, Edward Miller. He soon was shipping seafood all over the United States and was well known from New York to Florida across to California. He was also instrumental in helping Seadrift obtain grants to fund the city harbor renovation and expansion. He was an officer in the company and remained active in the business until his passing.

He loved to fish and hunt with his sons and daughters and several fishing buddies including J. C. Melcher and Robert Wallis. He also had a lifelong interest in history and hunting for shipwrecks.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Janell Moses Miller, daughters, Marla J. Miller of San Antonio, Luxey Miller Gormey of Richwood, and Brenda Wilkinson Reaves of Victoria; sons, Gerad L. Miller of Rockdale, Curtis O. Miller of Victoria, Wayne Wilkinson of Port Lavaca, and Randy Wilkinson of Seadrift; sister, Eileen Miller Lightner of Palacios; brother, Edward Miller of Seadrift; 16 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in passing by brothers, Willie Miller, Norman Miller; grandsons, Billy George Parker and Brighton Hunter Miller.

August Mosier

August Mosier born July 4, 1861, at old Indianola, died at his home in Palacios, March 20, 1940. Although born in Texas his early life was spent elsewhere and he was living in New Orleans, when the town of his birth was practically swept away by a hurricane. He also lived in Mexico and spent five years in the border country before returning to Texas to make his home.

In 1901 he came to Palacios and was here during the very early days of our city, assisting in laying out the streets and much of the other work done by the Townsite Company. He was employed at Hotel Palacios for a number of years when this hostelry was enjoying its most popular and successful days.

On October 12, 1910 he was united in marriage to Miss Elsie Schickle, and to this union were born five children, three sons, Rudolph, Edwin and August Jr., and two daughters, Mrs. Clara Hicks and Anna Mae. Besides the wife and children, three grandsons, survive, one brother, Julius Mosier, of Midfield, two nieces and two nephews.

In early life Mr. Mosier was converted in the Methodist Church, but later united with the First Christian Church in Palacios. He lived a quiet unassuming life, devoted to the family and followed the teachings of his Lord and Master most faithfully. Fraternally he had been a member of the W. O. W. for 44 years.

During the past few years Mr. Mosier had been in failing health which had prevented his doing any very active work, but he never lost interest in church and civic activities. During the past few weeks, his condition became worse and his peacefully passing on last Wednesday morning was not unexpected. He was ready and willing to answer the summons.

Funeral services were held for the departed Thursday afternoon at the Palacios Funeral Home conducted by Rev. G. F. Gillespie, and interment made in the Palacios Cemetery under the direction of the Palacios Funeral Home.

Relatives here for the funeral of Mr. Mosier were Mr. and Mr. O. J. Lonquet, of Liverpool; Henry Smith and family, Abraham Smith, of Midfield, Otto and Alfred Frick, of Markham.

Benjamin F. Murphy

Benjamin F. Murphy was born in 1862, at Locke, N. Y., and departed this life, Jan. 5, 1928, at his home near Blessing, age 65 years, 5 months, and 4 days.

When a young man, Mr. Murphy left New York with his parents to western Nebraska, where he met and married Miss Etta Van Nice, in 1890. To this union three children were born, two girls and one boy, who with his wife and one sister mourn his loss.

During the year 1908, he and his family migrated to Texas, and made their home near Blessing, in which community Mr. Murphy was highly esteemed and respected by all who knew him. Of husband, father, friend and neighbor, he was of the very best and that is the highest tribute that can be paid to any man, and thus is the one paid to the departed.

Etta Van Nice Murphy

Etta (Van Nice) Murphy was born Sept. 17th 1869 near Evansville, Ind.

At the age of eighteen years she moved with her father and other brothers and sisters to Kansas, where she was married on January 23rd, 1890, to Benjamin F. Murphy. To this union three children were born. In 1909 this happy little family came to Texas making their home near Blessing, where for twenty years the family circle remained unbroken, until Jan. 5th, 1928 the Angel of Death entered this happy home claiming the father. Just one year later--Jan. 7th 1929, death again entered, this time taking from our midst the mother.

She contracted "flu" just a few days after Christmas, which developed into pneumonia, and on Jan. 8th, 1929, one of the most beautiful and sweetest examples of motherhood was laid to rest beside her husband beneath the palm trees in Palacios cemetery.

Mrs. Murphy was a kind neighbor and a devoted and unselfish mother and friend and we shall miss her from the community circle.

And as our hearts' sorrow our sympathy go out to the bereaved ones who mourn her death.

Three children, Mrs. Ed Blackburn, Mrs. Wm. Taylor, and Vernon Murphy, all of Blessing, one grandson, J. B. Murphy, one brother, J. F. Van Nice, of Topeka, Kansas, three sisters, Mrs. L. L. Long, Horton, Kansas, Miss Alice Van Nice and Mrs. E. Summer of White City, Kansas.

"Dearest mother, you have left us,
And your love we deeply feel.
But the God who has bereaved us,
He can all our sorrows heal.
Dearest mother, how we miss you,
Miss you more than words can tell.
But we know we shall meet you,
In that home Beyond the Vale."

When the dark clouds of sorrow suddenly lower and release a storm of affliction we learn then how comforting and helpful our friends and neighbors may be. And we want to thank each and everyone who by their kindness and sympathy helped us in this the deepest hour of sorrow.

Mrs. E. Blackburn, Mrs. Wm. Taylor, Vernon Murphy
