Funeral Services For Louis O. Martino Held Here Saturday

Funeral services for Louis O. Martino were held at 2:30 p. m. Saturday at the Second Presbyterian Church with Rev. Rugerio officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A native of Palacios, he was born March 21, 1919, a son of the late Louis and Dominga Ottino Martino. He died Thursday, January 20, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Elvira; two daughters, Mrs. Gloria Serna and Miss Guadalupe Martino, one son, Louis III; three sisters, Mrs. Pauline M. Pequeno, Mrs. Rosie M. Tobias, Mrs. Julia M. Garcia; three brothers, John and Tom Martino, all of Palacios and Charles of Dickinson.

Mary Martino

Funeral mass for Mary Martino, 78, of Palacios, were held Sept. 8, 2000 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Martino was born Sept. 21, 1921 in Victoria, Tx. to the late Reyes and Santana Torres Diaz. She died Sept. 5, 2000 at North East Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Tx.

She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and a resident of Palacios for the past 62 years.

Mrs. Martino is survived by her husband, John O. Martino of Palacios; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Delores and Harry Castro of Richmond, Tx., Rosalie and John Lenihan of San Antonio, Tx.; sisters, Josefa Rodriguez of Port Lavaca, Tx., Benita Cano of Kemah, Tx.; brother, Porfidio Diaz of Corpus Christi, Tx.; 4 grandchildren, Evea Hamlin and husband, Philip, of Wharton, Marcus Castro and Samantha Castro of Richmond and Adam Rodriguez, Jr. of San Antonio; 4 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son John O. Martino, Jr., sister Isabel Lopez and brother Manuel Diaz.

Pallbearers were Philip Hamlin, Adam Rodriguez, Sr., Adam Rodriguez, Jr., John Lenihan, Harry Castro and Courtney Grisby.

Tom Ottino Martino

Funeral services for Tom Ottino Martino were held at the First Presbyterian Church Wednesday, February 13, at 3 p. m. with the Rev. Suarez officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A native and life-long resident of Palacios, he was born June 17, 1925, the son of the late Louis and Donna Ottino Martino. A fisherman, he died of an apparent heart attack Monday, February 11, at Matagorda Peninsula while oystering with his brother, John.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha Guerra Martino, daughter, Dorothy Lynn Martino and son Thomas A. Martino; three sisters, Pauline Pequeno, Rosalie Tobias and Julia Garcia; two brothers, John Martino, all of Palacios and Charlie Martino of Dickinson.

Arthur L. Matteson, Resident Since 1929, Buried Here Thursday

Funeral services for Arthur Leslie Matteson were held at 2:30 Thursday afternoon in the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. E. M. Walker officiating. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A resident of Palacios since 1929, he was born in Gaston, Oregon, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Odell Matteson on August 5, 1876. He died March 17 in El Campo after a lengthy illness.

He was married to Mary Ann Baker on October 16, 1908, and to this union were born three children. He was an active member of the Nazarene Church as long as his health permitted.

Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Harold Bell of Palacios, son Rodell Matteson of Houston; granddaughter, Karen Bell, of Palacios; sister, Mrs. Vic Fuqua of Lake Oswego, Oregon and brother S. Roy Matteson of Gaston, Oregon.

Final Rites Thursday Mrs. Mary Matteson

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Ann Matteson were held Thursday, May 7 at 2 p. m. at the Church of the Nazarene with Rev. J. O. Steele conducting the services and Rev. and Mrs. Wright of Bay City furnished the music. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

She was born February 27, 1880 in Smith Center, Kansas, the second child of Aaron Franklin and Melissa Jane Baker, in a family of five brothers.

A few months later the family moved to Iowa where she lived until about twelve years of age when the family moved to Oregon.

On November 14, 1908 she was married to Arthur Leslie Matteson and to this union were born three children, Rodell Matteson, Mrs. Harold Bell and Mrs. Wesley Holloway, who preceded her mother in death.

In 1929 the family moved to Palacios and have since made Matagorda County their home. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene and a devout Christian all of her life.

Her death resulted from a stroke suffered on April 17, 1959 and death came on May 6, 1959 in the Bay View General Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, A. L. Matteson; one son, Rodell Matteson of Houston; one daughter, Mrs. Harold Bell of Palacios and one grandchild, Karen Bell of Palacios.

Vernon Matthews Sr.

Funeral services for Vernon Matthews Sr., 66 of Palacios, were held Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Palacios with the Rev. Leroy Moore officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery.

Visitation hours were until 9 p. m. Friday at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home and from 1-2 p. m. Saturday at the church.

A resident of Palacios, Matthews was born August 20, 1923 to Timothy Matthews with the U. S. Air Force in Germany; mother, Era Matthews of Eagle Lake; two stepdaughters, Barbara Peters of Missouri City and Betty K. Sanford of Lake Jackson; six stepsons, Paul and Willie Richard of Palacios, Archie of Olivia, James Davis of Lake Jackson; three brothers, E. B. Matthews and Wilbur Matthews of Boling, Junior L. Matthews of Houston; a sister, Vertis Gray of Houston; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were James Peters Jr., Donald E. Sanford, Paul A. Davis, Archie Davis, Hubert D. Davis and Johnnie E. Heard.

Honorary pallbearers were Deacon Dave Watson and members of Timothy Lodge #276.

Clara Florine Mayfield

Funeral services for Clara Florine Mayfield, 77, of Pasadena, Tx. will be held at 2 p. m. Saturday, March 11 at the Palacios Cemetery with Rev. Charlie Parker officiating.

Mrs. Mayfield was born Nov. 17, 1922 in Palacios, Tx. She died March 10, 2000 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Houston.

A former resident of Palacios, she had been residing in Pasadena for the past 30 years.

She is survived by her husband, Herbert Mayfield of Pasadena; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Donna Mayfield of LaPorte, Tx.; and two grandchildren, David and Douglas Mayfield of LaPorte.

Wanda Fields Mayfield

Funeral services for Wanda Fields Mayfield, 70, of Palacios are scheduled for 11 a. m. today at First United Methodist Church, Palacios, with the Rev. Ralph Smith officiating. Burial to follow in Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Fields was born Feb. 20, 1923 in Sanger, Texas to Ted and Idell Fox Fields and died 3:40 p. m. July 10, 1993 at Wagner General Hospital, Palacios.

A lifelong resident of Palacios, she was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Eli Mayfield of Palacios; a daughter and son-in-law, Wanda Lynn and Price Blalock of Houston; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Mark Mayfield of Palacios, Kent and Shelley Harrison Mayfield and Jim and Shawn Mayfield, all of Palacios; five granddaughters, Charity, Lindsay, Faith and Joy Mayfield and Lauren Blalock; and two grandsons, Ryan Brice Blalock and Thomas Mayfield.

Pallbearers include Ted Bates, Marvin Curtis, Woodrow Wilson, Lowell Johnson, Jimmy Smith and Thomas Holsworth.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Palacios.

Mrs. Martha J. Melton Buried Here Fri. P. M.

Graveside services for Mrs. Martha Janie Melton of Houston were held at the Palacios Cemetery Friday, June 3, at 2 p. m. with the Rev. John Berkley officiating. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a. m. by the Rev. John T. Taylor at the Boulevard Harrisburg Chapel in Houston.

A resident of Palacios from 1922 to 1926, she died Wednesday at the age of 78.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Artie Johnson of Houston; two sisters, Mrs. Effie Mae Hidgon of Palacios, and Mrs. J. S. Woodson of Allentown, Ala., and a brother-in-law, J. P. McDonald of Palacios, and one granddaughter.

Mrs. Viva E. Metcalf

A former resident of Palacios, Mrs. Viva E. Metcalf, who would have been 92 years old January 31, died Saturday, January 18, in Bay City.

Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church at 2 p. m. Monday, January 20, with the Rev. Rayford Harris officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Born January 31, 1877, she had lived in the nursing home in Richmond the past several years, transferring to Bay Villa in Bay City when it opened last year.

Survivors include one son, John D. Metcalf of Edwardsville, Illinois, two granddaughters and one great granddaughter.

Alvin A. Meyer

Funeral services for Alvin A. Meyer, 77, of Palacios, were scheduled for 2 p. m. Saturday at Palacios Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Hollas Hoffman officiating. Burial was to follow in Palacios Cemetery in Palacios.

Mr. Meyer was born July 31, 1915 to Edward and Dora Luedecke Meyer and died May 28, 1993 at Matagorda General Hospital.

A resident of Palacios for 46 years where he was owner and operator of the Meyer Gulf Service Station, he was a member of the Lutheran church.

Meyer was a veteran of World War II where he served in the U. S. Army and was a member of Palacios V. F. W. Post No. 2467.

Survivors include a wife, Dorothy Nell McGilberry Meyer of Palacios; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn and Ray Morgan of Pearland and Kathy and Henry Breitkreutz of Mart;; a son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Betty Meyer of Lake Jackson; a sister, Annie Maretka of Austin; a brother, Walter Meyer of Oakhurst; and seven grandchildren, Mike Morgan of Pearland, Tracy and husband Charlie Rounsavall of Waco, Robin Breitkreutz of Waco, Jane Breitkreutz of Mart, and Wes Meyer, Clark Meyer and Irene Meyer, all of Lake Jackson.

Members of the Palacios V. F. W. Post No. 2467 were to serve as pallbearers.

Jim F. Michna

Funeral services were held here Tuesday afternoon from the Palacios Funeral Home for Jim F. Michna, conducted by Rev. H. M. Keen, of the Methodist Church, with interment in the Palacios Cemetery under the direction of the Palacios Funeral Home.

Mr. Michna was born May 12, 1896, and died in a Houston hospital March 5, 1939. He had made his home in and around Palacios for a number of years, but had been in Houston for the past several months.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Bertha Michna, a son, Leroy Michna of Houston; a daughter, Mrs. R. G. Hendricks of Palacios; his father, J. F. Michna of Schulenburg; his mother, Mrs. Betty Michna of Midfield; and three brothers and three sisters.

We join a host of friends in extending sympathy.

Mary Jewel Lane Mikels

Graveside services for Mary Jewel Lane Mikels, 90, of Kennard, Tx., were held April 1 at Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Mikels was born Nov. 16, 1915 in El Campo, Tx. to the late Annie Lee Baldree and Frank Lane. She died March 29, 2006.

She had been a resident of Kennard since 1991. She had worked for American National Insurance Co. in Galveston for 35 years and was a member of the Westside Baptist Church.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law Vernie and Sue Mikels; grandson and wife Bubba and Ann Mikels; granddaughter and husband Jeannine and Tommy Little; great-grandchildren T. D. Little, Valerie Sanders, L. B. Mikels and Ashton Little; great-great-grandchildren Haleigh Little, Kaleigh Michelle Little, Cade Sanders, Peyton Sanders and Ava Mikels.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Vernie Mikels; and infant son; and brothers Shady Lane and Cecil Lane.

Vernie E. Mikels

Graveside services for Vernie E. Mikels were held at 3:30 p. m. Tuesday, July 18, in the Palacios Cemetery with Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating following funeral services at 12 noon in the Emken-linton Funeral Home in Texas City officiated by Dr. J. D. Harvard.

Born November 2, 1900 in La Plata, Missouri, he had been a resident of Texas City for 40 years and was a member of the First Baptist Church. He died Sunday, July 16, in Galveston Coutny Memorial Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Jewell (Lane) Mikels of Texas City; son Vernie F. Mikels; two brothers, Lafie Mikels of Oklahoma and Ernest Mikels of California and two grandchildren.

Services For Frank Millard Set Friday

Funeral services for Frank David Millard, 62, of Blessing will be held at the Palacios Funeral Home at 3 p. m. Thursday (today) with Rev. H. T. Walters of Blessing officiating. Interment will be in the Palacios Cemetery.

Mr. Millard who died Wednesday in the hospital in El Campo is survived by his wife, Inez of Blessing and two brothers, H. E. Millard of Lamar, Mo., and Andy Millard of Oklahoma.

Alma C. Miller

Mrs. Alma C. Miller of Port Lavaca was interred in the Palacios Cemetery Sunday afternoon following funeral services at 3 p. m. at the Richardson Funeral Home Chapel in Port Lavaca, with the Rev. Johnnie Kisiah officiating.

A former resident of Palacios, she was born October 17, 1896, in Olivia and died at 5:30 p. m. Saturday in a Port Lavaca hospital, after a lengthy illness.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Eileen Lightner of Palacios; three sons, N. D. and George W. Miller Jr. of Port Lavaca and Edward J. Miller of Seadrift; three sisters, Mrs. Hazel Wilden of Victoria, Mrs. Edna Swenson of Bay City and Mrs. Lillie Peterson of Round Rock; 16 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Funeral Services Held Here Tuesday For Mrs. Eliza Jane Miller

Funeral services were held at the Palacios Funeral Home at 3 P. M. Tuesday, January 17 for Mrs. Eliza Jane Miller who died in the Bay View Hospital Monday morning, January 16. Mr. Ellis Johnson, Jehovah’s Witness pastor of Markham conducted the last rites. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Miller was born February 8, 1876 in Nacogdoches County. She had been a resident of Palacios for many years, having lived with her son, E. T. Miller, the last seven years.

Survivors are her four daughters, Mrs. B. A. Faircloth of Longview, Mrs. Elida Johnson of Palacios, Mrs. Velma Tillman of Lynnwood, Calif. and Mrs. J. E. Wyatt of Palacios; three sons, C. C. Miller of Houston, W. D. Miller of Abilene and E. T. Miller of Palacios.

Also surviving are two brothers, John Sowell and Willie Sowell of Nacogdoches, two sisters, Mrs. Susie Grimes of Nacogdoches and Mrs. Lydia Harvey of Palacios.

Esther Louise Miller

Funeral services for Esther Louise Miller, 67, of Palacios, were held June 14, 1999 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Robert Taylor and James Sykes officiating. Interment was at the Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Miller was born April 6, 1932 in Seymour, Tx. to Abel Cornelius Morgan and Virginia Lee Camp Morgan. She died June 10, 1999 at Wagner General Hospital in Palacios.

A resident of Palacios since 1981, she was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy and was a retired customer service agent.

Mrs. Miller is survived by a daughter, Helen L. Callais, of Palacios; a son, David C. Fuhrman of Shreveport, La.; a sister, Goldie Biggerstaff of Granbury, Tx.; two brothers, Bud Morgan of Huffman, Tx. and Luke Morgan of Seymour, Tx; grandchildren Tammy Pena of Palacios, David Charles Fuhrman of Minden, La., Donna Denise Rennison of Tyler, Tx., and Esther Louise Callais of San Marcos, Tx.; and great-grandchildren Amanda, Jason, Heather, Matthew, Anthony and Larry.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles R. Miller, brothers Donnie and Morris McMinn; and two great-grandsons, Antonio and Andrew Fuhrman.

Pallbearers were David Carl Fuhrman, Douglas M. Callais, Rick Cink, Joe Pena, David Krummel and Marshall Callais.

George Walter Miller, Sr.

Funeral services for George Walter Miller were held Friday, July 18, at 10 a. m. at Richardson Funeral Chapel in Port Lavaca with the Rev. R. Carl Smith, pastor of Alamo Heights Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Son of the late N. T. Miller and Sadie Lenker Miller he was born November 11, 1891, in Eddyville, Nebraska. A resident of the Turtle Bay community, he was a retired farmer and member of the Baptist Church. He died Wednesday, July 16, at 6:15 p. m. in a nursing home at Port Lavaca following an extended illness.

Survivors include his wife, Alma C. Miller of Palacios; three sons, George W. Miller, Jr., N. D. Miller, both of Port Lavaca and Edward J. Miller of Seadrift; a daughter, Mrs. Eileen Lightner of Port Lavaca; three brothers, E. W. Miller, N. T. Miller, both of Sumner, Neb. and Ray Miller of Carney, Neb. 15 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

H. A. Miller

The remains of Harry A. Miller were brought here Saturday morning from Houston by the Boulevard Funeral Home for interment in the Palacios Cemetery.

Mr. Miller served as superintendent of the local schools some twenty years ago, and for the past 13 years he had been a teacher in the Milby High School at Houston. Mr. Miller died in a Houston hospital, Thursday, January 16.

He was 69 years of age and is survived by his wife, Mrs. Frances Miller, a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Musselman of Palacios. A son, C. H. Miller, of Houston, and two grandchildren, John and Judy Miller, of Houston. Funeral services were held Friday at 4 p. m. at the Broadway Baptist Church with Rev. David Boston, officiating.

W. D. Miller

The remains of W. D. Miller, who died at his home near Citrus Grove, Wednesday were brought here for burial and interred in the city cemetery. Mr. Miller moved with his family from St. Augustine, Texas, to a farm in the Citrus Grove community some months ago. He had been an invalid, confined to his bed a great portion of the time the past five years. The bereaved family has the sympathy of the entire community.

Funeral Services Held Wednesday For Native of Greece – Gus Mills

Funeral services for Gus Mills, 82, were held here Wednesday afternoon at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

A native of Greece, Mr. Mills was a fisherman. He died Tuesday night in the hospital here.

Survivors are his wife, three daughters, Mrs. George Frangullie and Mrs. Jesse Rodriguez of Palacios, and Mrs. J. T. Goode of San Francisco, Cal.; and two sons, M. O. Trefill and John Trefill of Waco.

Father Vaclav J. Bily officiated at the services and Taylor Brothers Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. G. P. Mims – Lizzie A. Marsh Mims

The funeral of Mrs. C. P. Mims was held Tuesday afternoon, in the Methodist church, services were conducted by Rev. F. G. Clark. Mrs. Mims had been ill for several weeks with flu and relapsed, from which she never recovered. Medical aid and all kindness and attention were given by friends, neighbors, nurses and loved ones.

Mrs. Mims, nee Lizzie A. Marsh, was born in Burr Oak, Iowa, March 1, 1867 and died March 18, 1929. She became a Christian at the age of 13, and throughout her years always lived a consistent, useful Christian life. She taught school successfully in Kansas, Iowa, California, and Texas, and married Mr. G. P. Mims in Palacios, Texas, in 1911, who preceded her in death last Oct.

Mrs. Mims was a lovable Christian woman, a kind neighbor, a true friend, a faithful wife and loyal to her loved ones. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. W. H. Hathaway, of California, one brother, Elmer Marsh, of Pangburn, Ark., and three step-sons, John, Ben and George Mims.

Her earthly life is closed, but her sweet spirit will live on, and in that Better Land we will meet some day to part no more.
