James Meredith Martin

James Meredith Martin, who died at his home in this city, Wednesday, March 30, 1932, was born in Burksville, Ky., July 25, 1865. When nine years of age his father died, but he and his mother continued to make their home there until 1885, when they moved to Texas and located at Pendleton. Here he met Mary E. Callaway and they were married on April 24, 1888. Six years later they moved to Nursery, where Mr. Martin engaged in the Nursery business. Due to ill health a change became necessary and in 1909 they moved to Palacios, and continued to make this city their home.

Mr. Martin became one of the best known and most highly esteemed citizens of Palacios and for many years was engaged in the transfer business.

During the past few months he had been confined to his room, and his going home was not unexpected. All the members of his family were with him when the summons came.

Besides the widow, four children, two sons, James and Leon Martin, of San Antonio, and two daughters, Mrs. W. H. Evans, of Fort Worth, and Mrs. Carl R. Ehlers, of Palacios, and several grand-children survive. One daughter, Ira Martin Haynes, and one son, Harper Martin, have preceded him.

Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church, of which he was a faithful and devoted member, on Thursday afternoon, conducted by his brother-in-law, Rev. J. A. Callaway, assisted by Rev. Payne, the pastor. The remains were then taken to the city cemetery and interred beside those of the dear ones gone on before.

Harper Martin Killed White Out Hunting Monday
Funeral Services Held Here Tuesday By American Legion Post

One of the most deplorable tragedies that has ever happened here was in the death of Harper Martin, 32, one of Bay City’s well-liked young men, who was killed early in the morning on Armistice Day, near Lukefahr school house about 10 miles southeast of Bay City.

Mr. Martin met his death by a load of duckshot fired from an automatic shotgun by his companion, Buck Blaylock, another of Bay City’s most worthy young men.

As the news came to us, Martin, Blaylock and Pete Williams, all three mechanics and employed by the Anderson-Rugeley Auto Co., left early Monday morning on a duck hunt. Reaching the grounds they had prepared for the flight and had not been long in waiting before the ducks swarmed within range.

Martin and Blaylock being close together made ready to fire and just as Mr. Blaylock pulled the trigger, Mr. Martin, who was a few feet in advance, jumped to his feet to fire. The charge from Mr. Blaylock’s gun struck Mr. Martin in the back of the head, death resulting instantaneously.

Mr. Williams was immediately sent back to town and took help back to bring the boys in.

Mr. Martin was married to Miss Mary Sanders only four months ago. His young wife and Mr. Blaylock, as well as the family are severely shocked and the entire town grieved over the accident.

The families have the profoundest sympathy of the town and community.

The funeral of Mr. Martin was held in Palacios Tuesday. His parents reside there, but he has been a resident of Bay City for a number of years.

The Tribune on behalf of the city and all those who know the principals in this shocking occurrence, and their families, extends the sympathy of all in this sad hour of bereavement.

Especially is our sympathy given to the young wife of Mr. Martin as well as to Mrs. Blaylock, to Captain and Mrs. Carrington, and to the grief-stricken parents of Mr. Martin.—Bay City Tribune.

The remains of Harper Martin were brought to Palacios Tuesday, and were met at the depot by a large crowd of Palacios citizens, all business houses having been closed in due respect for the bereaved family, and the father, who has been a drayman here for many years and hauled goods for practically every business house in town as well as Uncle Sam’s mail. The American Legion Post was in charge of the service, assisted by members of the Fire Department, of which he was a member, the local truck being used to convey the flowers to the cemetery. The remains were taken to the cemetery and laid to rest beside those of a departed sister, Mrs. C. L. Haynes. The beautiful and impressive service of the Legion was held at the grave, in which the local Post was assisted by members of the Legion from Bay City, who accompanied the remains here. Rev. M. C. Stearns, pastor of the Palacios Methodist Church and Rev. Terry Wilson, pastor of the Bay City Methodist Church. Thus he now sleeps beneath a mound covered with beautiful flowers, tokens of friendship and esteem from those who knew and loved him best.

Walter Harper Martin was born Feb. 22, 1897, and died Nov. 11, 1929. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Martin and well known in Palacios, where he grew to manhood. He has worked in Bay City a number of years being with the Anderson-Rugeley Auto Co., there the past six years or more. His untimely death comes as a shock to all and Palacios people as a whole extend to the bereaved parents, young wife, brothers and sisters the deepest sympathy.
