Augusta Turley Lawson

Augusta Turley Lawson was born near Austin, June 12, 1856, and died in Palacios, Texas, July 1, 1936, at 2:40 p. m. aged 80 years and 19 days. She was a member of a Texas pioneer family, her mother coming to Matagorda County in 1837.

On Dec. 4, 1877 she was united in marriage to W. H. Lawson, near Austin and to this union 5 children were born, four sons and I daughter.

In 1902 the family moved to Palacios and all become active citizens in the making of our city. Mr. and Mrs. Lawson were interested in the business life also church, social and civic, lending their support in every was possible.

September 26, 1928 Mr. Lawson passed away while he and his wife were at the home of a son in Taft and since then Mrs. Lawson has made her home with her children.

She is survived by three sons, E. E. Lawson, of Alice; L. R. Lawson, of Robstown, and G. G. Lawson, of Palacios. Her daughter, Earle Lawson Rittenhouse died in 1908 and a son Capt. Gordon Lawson, Jan. 11, 1929. Seven grandchildren also survive, and five sisters and two brothers.

Mrs. Lawson was a gifted woman and used her talents in making her home a happy and attractive place for her family and their friends.

She was a devoted companion and mother, loyal friend and kind neighbor, ever willing to lend a helping hand in time of sorrow or distress. She was a faithful Christian and lived a life time to her belief.

Funeral services were held at Duffy Funeral Home, Thursday afternoon at 3:30 conducted by Rev. J. C. Gibbons of the Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. George D. McClelland, of the Baptist Church.

Interment was made in the Palacios Cemetery beside the loved ones who had preceded her to their eternal home.

Mrs. Matilda S. Louderback

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock in the Palacios Funeral Home for Mrs. Matilda S. Louderback, conducted by Rev. Robert M. McGehee, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, assisted by Rev. L. W. Crouch, and burial was made in the Palacios cemetery.

Mrs. Louderback was born in Michigan, November 6, 1857. In early life she moved to Indiana where she was married to A. J. Louderback, July 25, 1882. They made their home in Valparasio until 1930 when they came to Palacios to reside.

Two sons were born, Walter S., who died October 15, 1941, and A. E. Louderback, of Palacios.

Since the death of her husband March 15, 1939, Mrs. Louderback had made her home with her son and family. She passed away early Tuesday morning, July 18, 1944 at the age of 86 years, 8 months and 12 days.

William Joseph “Bill” Lowman

A Memorial Service for William Joseph “Bill” Lowman, 81, of Palacios, was held Aug. 12, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios.

Mr. Lowman passed away at home Aug. 7, 2007.

He was a faithful husband for over 61 years, a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather as well as a friend to everyone who knew him. At age 18, he was sent to the front lines in Germany where he became a decorated World War II hero and survived the Battle of the Bulge. He was truly one of the “Band of Brothers.”

When he returned from the War, he married his true love, Bonnie Lou Wright. As a highway contractor, he built over 100 State of Texas highways and built roads in the West Indies as well as South America. He had a wonderful long life and a million wonderful experiences. He was very proud of his father and mother, Dr. and Mrs. Harmon Luther Lowman, long-time president of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Tx.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; daughters Becky Meador and Blynda and David Barker; son William J. Lowman II and his wife Racheal; and his much loved grandchildren and great-grandons Meagan and Richard Meador, Jason, Kelly and Grant Hammons and Jake, Tisha and Wyatt Hammmons.

He was preceded in death by his grandsons, Joseph and William Meador.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory of William Joseph “Bill” Lowman to the Harmon Lowman Endowed Scholarship Fund c/o SHSU Advancement, Box 2537, Huntsville, TX 77341-2537.

Mrs. Maria R. Lucio

Funeral services for Mrs. Maria R. Lucio were held at 8:15 a. m. Monday, October 20, at the Rendon Funeral Home chapel followed by Requiem Mass at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church at 9 a. m. with the Rev. Eugene O’Callaghan officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Born October 8, 1880, in San Benito, she has been a resident of Palacios for 17 years. She died at 8:20 p. m. Saturday in Wagner General Hospital after a lingering illness.

Rosary was recited Sunday at 7:30 p. m. at the funeral home chapel.

She is survived by one son, Abel Lucio of Palacios; 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Pablo Baltazar Lucio

Infant Pablo Baltazar Lucio, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Pablo Lucio, Sr. of Palacios, died in the Matagorda General Hospital, Tuesday, June 26. Survivors include: parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pablo Lucio, Sr., of Palacios; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Guadalupe Tijerina of Palacios; and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Abel Lucio of Palacios. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, June 27, at 5 p. m. at the Palacios Cemetery with Father Brian Crooke officiating. Arrangements are with Palacios Funeral Home.

Elias Luna

Funeral services for Elias Luna, 60 of Palacios, were held March 10 at 2 p. m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Rev. Gerard Cernoch officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery. A rosary was recited March 9 at 7 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel.

Luna was born April 17, 1926 to Andres and Maria Sanchez Luna and died March 8, 1987 at his residence. He was a lifelong resident of Palacios.

Survivors include his wife, Enemencia Rodriguez Luna of Palacios; two daughters, Mary Jane Reyna and Linda Skelly, both of Palacios; three sons, Elias Luna, Jr. and Sam D. Luna, both of Lake Jackson and George W. Luna of Waco; one sister, Paula Lewis of Ozark, Alabama; three brothers, Dioncio Luna and Robert Cararubio, both of Palacios, and Toby Luna of San Diego, California; and six grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Adam Rodriguez, Frank Rodriguez, Juan Rodriguez, Jeff Hammonds, Jr., Tommy Hunt, and Steve Ramirez.

Maria Sanchez Luna

Funeral services for Maria Sanchez Luna, 84, of Palacios, were held May 30 at 4 p. m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Rev. Larry Matula officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery. A rosary was recited May 29 at 7:30 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel.

Mrs. Luna was born July 22, 1901 in Goliad Co., the daughter of Margarito and Elena Brewster Sanchez and died May 27, 1986 at Wagner General Hospital.

She had been a resident of Palacios since 1943.

Survivors include one daughter, Paula Lewis of Ozack, Ala.; four sons, Elias Luna and Dionicio Luna of Palacios, Toby Luna of San Diego, CA and Robert Cabarubio of Palacios; 19 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

Rites Held For Luna Infant – Soyna Luna

Graveside services for Soyna Luna, one-day-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elias Luna Jr., who died at 10:45 p. m. Wednesday in a Victoria hospital, were held Thursday in the Palacios Cemetery with the Rev. Armand Florizoone officiating.

Surviving besides the parents are grandparents, Natividad Gonzales of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Julia Baggett and Mr. and Mrs.. Elias Luna Sr. of Palacios.
