Christine Erickson
Linquist
Christine Erickson Linquist was born in Sweden, August
17, 1853, came to America in 1870, was married to Mr.
Erick Linquist in 1872, came to Carancahua about nine
years ago and departed this life Monday, May fourteenth,
at the Bay City hospital.
Mrs. Linquist was a faithful and consistent Christian, a
member of the Swedish Lutheran church, and was fully
prepared to meet her Savior face to face. She was a most
devoted and loving wife and mother, ever doing her duty
and more than her duty in the family circle; was ever
cheerful, hopeful and helpful. That she was loved and
honored by her neighbors was evidenced by the fact that
almost the entire population of the neighborhood came to
pay the tributes of their love and esteem.
Mrs. Linquist was the mother of fourteen children, two
of whom preceded her to the Great Beyond. Three, Albert,
Roy and Mae are still at home, the others being widely
scattered, one in Canada, one in Montana, one in Iowa,
one in North Dakota, one in Wisconsin and the others in
Minnesota.
While Mrs. Linquist had not been very strong for years,
it was only very recently that her condition was
considered at all serious. She was taken to Bay City
Friday when an operation was performed, but all loving
hands and hearts and medical skill could do availed not,
and she quietly went to sleep Monday. The remains,
accompanied by husband and daughter, were brought to
Palacios and interment made in the Palacios cemetery.

Millard Lipscomb Pioneer
Palacios Citizen Succumbs
Millard Fillmore Lipscomb was born January 4, 1862, near
Chester, Ill., the son of G. W. and Hila, nee Lewis,
Lipscomb. His father was an industrious wheat farmer of
southern Illinois.
As a young man he operated for several years a ferry on
the Mississippi River between Chester and Rockwood, Ill.
Then he operated a saw mill for four or five years which
business he left to become a lumber dealer at Campbell
Hill, Ill. Having amassed a substantial fortune in this
business he came to Texas first in 1905, remaining for
about a year near Palacios. Returning to Campbell Hill,
his former home for a brief sojourn he finally came to
establish his home permanently at Palacios during 1908.
Mr. Lipscomb united with the Presbyterian Church during
young manhood and was identified with that congregation
in Palacios early after his arrival here. He was elected
a deacon on June 18, 1911, and a ruling elder in January
of this year. His association with the church was one of
exemplary fidelity. He will be remembered long for his
faithful attendance upon all its services both morning
and evening, until the ravages of his fatal illness made
attendance an impossibility. He attended Sunday School
and morning worship for the last time on July 21st.
He also was a faithful attendant upon the meetings of
the Men’s Club of the Church being present at every
meeting from its organization in November 1939 until the
final meeting before the summer recess in June.
Mr. Lipscomb was married Oct. 20, 1886 near Campbell
Hill, Ill., to Miss Viola Draper who survives him. Two
sons and three daughters were born to this union, one
son and one daughter being twins, and all of whom save
one daughter, Bertha, died in infancy. Beside the widow,
this daughter, Mrs. Bertha Backen, and two grandsons,
Carl, Jr. and Roy Keith Backen survive. Mr. and Mrs.
Backen and Keith were with him at the time of his death.
Carl Jr., is in Honolulu, H. I.
Mr. Lipscomb has been closely associated with the
developments that have taken place in Palacios during
his long residence here. For many years he was a member
of the School Board upon which he was serving at the
time of the building of the Linnie Wolf School. He
served also as alderman during and following the time
that D. Ruthven was mayor. He was long time
superintendent of water works after this utility was
purchased from a private corporation. When a bond issue
provided sufficient funds for the development of the
water system he superintended the expansion program,
building the water tower and laying new mains. He was
also superintendent for a short time of the then
municipally owned light plant. For many years he was a
stockholder and director of the Palacios State Bank.
He was well known for his generous interest in the
development of every worthy enterprise in the community.
One of his latest benefactions was the enabling of the
Presbyterian Church to purchase and remodel a cottage
for the use of the Church as a manse or pastor’s home.
He has suffered greatly in recent years, particularly
within recent weeks and passed on to the better Home at
an early hour Monday morning, August 26, 1940, at the
age of 78 years, 7 months, 22 days
Funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. J.
G. M. Ramsey, at the Presbyterian Church, Tuesday,
August 27th at 10:30 a. m. Music was rendered
by the choir which sang “Crossing the Bar,” Tennyson,
and by Miss Dorothy Lee Curtis who sang “The Beautiful
Home of the Soul.” Mrs. C. W. Nester played the piano.
The Board of deacons of which Mr. Lipscomb was so long a
member served as active pall bearers, namely, H. C.
Campbell, W. H. Clement, Jr., C. W. Crawford, W. C.
Gray, Capt. J. W. Lipscomb, R. L. Price, D. Ruthven, R.
J. Sisson. The Session t o which he was raised as a
ruling elder only last January, were honorary
pallbearers, namely, M. O. Burton, W. H. Clement, Sr.,
Chas. Harriman, L. H. Hillbert, Wm. Holliday, C. W.
Nester, and E. C. Pasal.
The beautiful and impressive services of the Masonic
Lodge were held at the grave with the following brother
Masons acting as pallbearers: J. B. Feather, Glenn
Claybourn, Ralph Newsom, D. Ruthven, W. C. Gray and W.
H. Williams.
