Funeral services for Walter L. Leadford, 74, of Hallettsville, were held the morning of May 11, 1992 at Kubena Funeral Home Chapel in Hallettsville and in the afternoon at Palacios Funeral Home in Palacios with the Reverends Royal Jacobs and Hollie Whitfield officiating. VFW Post 2467 conducted military graveside services at Palacios Cemetery. Mr. Leadford was born Aug. 25, 1917 in Marble Falls to the late Albert and Mollie Tate Leadford. He died May 9, 1992 at his home. A member of the First Baptist Church in Hallettsville, he was a U. S. Navy Veteran of World War II and attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He earned his aviator’s license in 1946. He attended Marine Pilot School and received Master’s license for ocean towing vessels. Mr. Leadford towed the first pipe barge to Prudo Bay, Alaska and served on offshore rigs in the North Sea. He was a retired boat captain for Jackson Marine Corp. and Brown & Root marine operators. A longtime member of the Palacios VFD, he was also a member of the VFW and American Legion Post of Hallettsville and was active in the American Cancer Society. He is survived by his wife, Josephine Leadford of Hallettsville, whom he married on Dec. 16, 1954 in Palacios. Other survivors include: three daughters, Dolly Bittle and son-in-law Greg of Dermont, Ark., Carla Hyett and son-in-law Don of Palacios and Robin Posgay and son-in-law Ray of Friendswood, Tx.; two sons, Larry Ashley and daughter-in-law Olga of Harker Heights, Tex., and Jerry Leadford and daughter-in-law Jane of Fredericksburg, Tx.; two sisters, Leona Bluhm of Three Rivers, Tex., and Velma Byers and brother-in-law Robert of Weesatche, Tex.; 16 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, three grandsons and two great-grandsons. The family requests that memorials be made to the Palacios Area EMS.

Funeral services for Rosie Leal, 68, of Houston were held today at 10 a. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tony Flores officiating. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery, Palacios. Mrs. Leal was born Aug. 26, 1924 in Palacios to Charles Flores and Isabel Garcia and died July 30, 1993 in Methodist Hospital, Houston. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a resident of Houston for the last 45 years. Survivors include: three sons, Charles Leal, Richard Leal and Fidel Leal, all of Houston, three sisters, Esther Villasenor of Houston, Emma Cavazos of Weslaco and Rachel Rodriquez of Palacios; four brothers, Charlie Flores, Robert Flores and Roland Flores all of Palacios and Roy Flores of Houston; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Vincent Villasenor, Richard Leal Jr.,Johnny Flores, Michael Flores, Randy Flores and Roland Flores. Arrangements were with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Palacios.

Funeral services for Henry Arthur LeBlanc, 87, of Palacios, were held Oct. 14 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Rev. Casey Jarzombek officiating. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery. Mr. LeBlanc was born Nov. 11, 1904 in Lafayette, La. He died Oct 10, 1992 at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City. He was affiliated with the Catholic Church and had been a resident of Palacios for 25 years. Mr. LeBlanc is survived by his wife, Hazel Marion LeBlanc of Palacios; a daughter, Jeannine Marie Hunter of Marietta, Ga.; a son, Patrick Henry LeBlanc of Grand Prairie, Tex.; a sister, Ida Sandefur of Beaumont; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Pallbearers were John Sardelich, Bill Lynn, John Castner, George Kana, Bill Hamlin and Sammy Davidson. In lieu of usual remembrances, donations may be made to the Palacios Volunteer Dept.

Services were held December 13, 1989 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel for Ruby Lechtenberg of Palacios who passed away December 11 in Brazoria. Rev. Stacy Houser officiated at the ceremony and at the burial in Palacios Cemetery. Ruby Lechtenberg was born to William Fletcher Chamblee and Lula Glenn Chamblee on August 8, 1908 in Wills Point, Texas. She was long a resident of Palacios and a member of the First Baptist Church here. Ruby Lechtenberg was preceded in death by her husband, Urban August Lechtenberg on June 16, 1983. She is survived by a sister, Mabel Johnson of Palacios; nieces, Nancy Thomas of Arkansas, Bonnie Washington of Brazoria, and Judy Palmer of Houston; nephews, Lowell Johnson of Palacios, Gary Chamblee of Lake Jackson, Neal Chamblee of New Mexico, and Nubbin Chamblee of Katy. Pallbearers were Lowell Johnson, Gary Chamblee, Nubbin Chamblee, Carroll Harvey, Dan Chamblee and Jerry Washington.

Annie LeCompte, aged 17 years, 1 month and 15 days, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. LeCompte, died Saturday morning, the 1st inst., death resulting from severe burns received in an accident last Christmas. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church at 4 o’clock Saturday afternoon conducted by the pastor, Rev. Israel, followed by interment at the city cemetery, and were attended by a large number of the sympathizing friends of the family.

Last rites for Mr. John B. LeCompte were held here Saturday, Aug. 17, at 4 o’clock p. m. from the Palacios Funeral Home, with Rev. L. W. Crouch, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial was made in the Palacios Cemetery under the direction of the Palacios Funeral Home. Mr. LeCompte died Aug. 16, 1940, in the hospital at Refugio, where he had been since he was stricken in the early part of the summer. He was born in Louisiana in the year 1871, and was a son of one of the pioneer families of Matagorda County. Most of his life had been spent as a farmer and ranchman in and around Palacios, locating here before there was much of a town. His wife preceded him in death in June, 1919, also one baby daughter. Surviving are two sons, John Dye, of Pasadena and Frankie of Houston, two daughters, Mrs. Pearl Margerum and Miss Juanita LeCompte, both of Refugio, besides four brothers and three sisters. The deceased became a Christian and united with the local Baptist Church during the summer of the first meeting of the Baptist Encampment in Palacios. Many are the noble neighborly deeds that he did during the active years of his life and a large circle of friends mourn the passing of one who was ever willing to aid in time of need. “Peace to his ashes.”

Nannie Alpha Harris was born near Buckeye, June 16th, 1877, died at her home in Palacios, June 11th, 1919. In 1895 she was married to Mr. John LeCompte also of Matagorda county. To this union six children were born, Bertha, who preceded her in 1913; Dia, aged 19; Pearle, 17; Frank, 14; Nanita, 9 and Leslie Harris, infant daughter, one day old. She was a member of the Baptist church for years and loved the service of the Lord, but on account of ill health could not attend services at all times. She was a loving wife and mother, a good friend and neighbor whom to now was to love and respect. Funeral services were held at her East Bay home at 10 o’clock June 12th, Rev. Echols, officiating, after which the remains were taken to the cemetery for interment, followed by many sympathizing friends. Mrs. LeCompte leaves a loving husband, five children, four brothers, three sisters and a host of friends. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community.

Oreley Pierce LeCompte was born in New Iberia, La., November 7, 1877, and died at his home in this city, January 3, 1945. He moved to Matagorda County with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack LeCompte when he was nine years of age and had made Palacios his home most of this time. He was a boat builder by trade and the ones constructed by him would make quite a large fleet if assembled in one place. Many of his craft have been used on the bay and gulf for both fishing and pleasure and the latest of his handiwork is a pleasure boat for his son, Mayo LeCompte, who lacked only a few hours work to have been ready for launching. Mr. LeCompte was a member of the Baptist Church. He had a large circle of friends who regret to learn of his sudden passing and will sadly miss his friendly greeting as he went to and from his work. Besides his wife, Minnie LeCompte, he is survived by seven children, a number of grand children, three brothers, Albert, Pete and Paul LeCompte, and three sisters, Mrs. Nels P. Highberg, Sr., Eva Ledbetter and Mrs. Katie Ryman. Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 4, at 4:00 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home conducted by Rev. J. A. Derrick. Burial was made in the Palacios cemetery.

Funeral services for Clinton C. Lee were held at the First Methodist Church Saturday, February 22, at 2 p. m. with the Rev. John Berkley and Rev. Clinton Harris officiating Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. A resident of Palacios for several years, he was born August 27, 1903 in Roper, Kansas, a son of S. B. and Montie Lee. He served in the U. S. Coast Guards, from which he was retired. After an illness of many months he died Wednesday, February 19 in the Marine Hospital in Galveston In 1930 he married Edith Leslie of Iola, Kansas. They had two little girls who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Edith Lee of Palacios; three sisters, Mrs. Helen Pasley of Kenner, La., Mrs. Leona Speed of Port Aransas and Mrs. Leetta Harvey of Palacios; one brother Loyl Lee and one half brother, George Anderson, both of Houston, ten nephews and nine nieces. Those from out of town attending his funeral, besides his relatives, were: Mrs. Lee’s niece, Mr. and Mrs. Kleier and daughter, Wichita, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Funeral services for Darlene Carol Lee, 6-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Lee, were held at the Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon at four o’clock. Rev. L. M. Greenhaw officiated and burial was in the Palacios Cemetery. The sudden passing of Darlene at the hospital Tuesday came as a shock to the family and friends and the grief stricken parents have the heartfelt sympathy of all our citizens in the loss of their only child.

Funeral services for Edith Irene Lee, 77, were held June 10 at 3 p. m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Ray Boykin officiating. Interment followed at Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Lee was born Sept. 21, 1907 in Iola, Kansas and died June 8, 1984 at Wagner General Hospital. She was the daughter of William and Emma Langley Leslie. She had been a resident of Palacios for 54 years and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton Lee, and two daughters, Wanda Jean and Darlene. Survivors include one sister, Louise Gold of San Point, Idaho; three sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Charles Harvey, Jeffie Harvey and Terry Harvey, all of Palacios; and Leon Lee, Loyl Lee Jr. and Kenny Lee, all of Houston.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mildred Colleen Lee of 808 4th Street were held at 5 p. m. Sunday, September 18, in the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. Daughter of W. T. Moore and Earsie May Adcock Moore she was born in Kentucky on August 21, 1930. A resident of Palacios for 15 years, she died September 16 in John Sealy Hospital in Galveston. She is survived by her husband, M. J. “Buddy” Lee of Palacios, father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Moore of Spring, Texas; two sons, Edward and Billy Foisy of Palacios and one sister Betty Hurt of Carpentersville, Illinois.

City flags were lowered to half-mast in memory and honor of Palacios city councilman and civic leader Robert E. Lee, 43, who died last Thursday following open heart surgery. Funeral services were held Monday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Palacios with Rev. Doug Blanton officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery. Lee, who moved to Palacios three years ago from Port Lavaca and quickly became an active member of the community, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1987 in St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston following open heart surgery. It was the second heart surgery in recent months for Lee who had a history of heart problems. Lee moved to Palacios in 1984 to serve as manager of the newly opened Palacios Building Materials. He and his wife of 25-years, Joanne, later opened their own business, Picnic Basket convenience store at 1st and Henderson. At the time of his death, Lee was serving his first two-year term on the Palacios City Council to which he was elected in April 1986. An active member of the community, he served as a director on the Palacios Chamber of Commerce, vice-chairman of the Economic Action Committee of the Gulf Coast and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. An avid supporter of Palacios which he often referred to as the best place he ever lived, Lee was instrumental in reactivating the Palacios Industrial Foundation on which he served as vice-chairman. A prime believer in community involvement, he frequently gave his support, both physically and financially to a wide range of local causes and endeavors. He served as chairman of the successful 1987 Palacios Bay Fest held in October. In one of the two eulogies delivered during the funeral service Monday morning, Lee’s friend, Frank Law, said that “Many men are dreamers and visionaries. And some are doers. Robert was both.” He went on to note that Lee was a visionary when it came to the town he loved, Palacios. “He saw a jewel by the sea,” Law said. “All he wanted for this town was good. He saw town where the new and the old could stand by each other, side by side, in harmony. George Holst, delivering a eulogy written by Roberta Ripke, said that Lee reached “the ultimate achievements in a full life” as a son, husband, father and friend. Holst added that “caring and sharing came easy for Robert and easy for us in return because of his generous offerings of friendship, his willingness to take part, to get involved, to serve, to do whatever it took to make this an even better place to live, to work, to enjoy and to raise a family. Our community family has been extensively enhances by Robert’s goodness.” Robert E. Lee Funeral services for Robert E. Lee was born Jan. 9, 1944 in Linton, Indiana, the son of Lester Lawrence and Lillie Faye Johnson Lee. He died Oct. 29, 1987 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston. Lee was raised in Bloomfield, Indiana, was a former resident of Port Lavaca, and had been a resident of Palacios for three years. He was Vice Chairman of the Economic Action Committee, Vice Chairman of the Industrial Board, a member of the Palacios City Council, a director of the Palacios Chamber of Commerce, an active member of the Bay Fest Committee and a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. Survivors include his wife, Nellie Joanne Lee of Palacios; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Lee of Bloomfield, Indiana; daughter, Lisa Jo Tarver of Corpus Christi; sons, William Lester Lee of Palacios and John Thomas Lee of Huntsville, TX; sister, Patricia Lucas of Greenwood, Indiana; brother, James Lee of Scotland, Indiana; and two step-grandchildren Pallbearers were Nick West, Leonard Lamar, Winfrey Horton, Ray Berger, Donald Shimek and Mike Maxwell. Honorary pallbearers were Neil Hartsfield, Don Kopecky, Les White, Bill Reaves, Billy Harrison, Billy Morton, Ronnie Callahan, and Gary Hunter.

Services for Terry Lewis Lee of Palacios will be held at 2 p. m. March 18, 1984, in the Enterprise Baptist Church in Bay City with Bishop C. E Baker officiating. Mr. Lee, 22, was born on June 17, 1961 in Texas. He was the son of Luther Lee and the former Ethel Roy. He was a resident of Palacios. He is survived by his parents, Mrs. Ethel Clay and Luther Lee; his step-father, Adolph Clay; his step-mother, Mrs. Alta Faye Lee; his grandparents, Mrs. Queen Ester Roy of Palacios and Mrs. Clem Ashton of Van Vleck; five brothers, Harold of California, Luther Jr., Kenny, Michael and Daryl; two sisters, Mrs. Lisa Alcantara and Eartha Yvonette of Bay City. Funeral services for Jose Angel Leijha will be held at 3 p. m. Wednesday, July 16, in the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Aldemar Bolea officiating. Son of the late Francisco and Irene Barrera Leija, he was born March 19, 1907, in Mexico. He had been a resident of Palacios since 1942 and a city employee for 20 years. He died Sunday in Citizens Memorial Hospital in Victoria. Funeral services for Theodore Leijha, 41, of 900 Moore Street were held Monday at the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. R. H. Zumalt officiating. Leija was born July 2, 1939 in LaWard and died June 26 at Wagner General Hospital. Leija had been in Palacios since 1942 and was employed as an oiler of heavy equipment for Brown and Root. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene. Leija is survived by his mother, Guadalupe Navarra; three sisters, Janie Cerda, Marcella Leija and Francis Guerra, all of Palacios; and two brothers, Ross Leija of Hawaii and Lupe Leija of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Funeral services for Mrs. Aurelia N. Lerma, 69, were held at 8:45 a. m. Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jose Leyha [Leijha], and at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church at 9 a. m. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery. Rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Leyha home.

Ashby William Lewis, age 82 years, 9 months, 21 days, passed way at 1 a. m., Nov. 12, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Yeamans, in Bay City following an illness of long duration. The deceased was born at Miami, Mo., Jan 21, 1858, and was a son of Alfred Lewis and Jane Ashby Smith Lewis. He came to Texas when 15 years of age and located at Manor near Austin. Here in 1888 he was married to Miss Nettie Harris who preceded him to the other shore in 1921. About forty-five years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis came to south Texas and located in Jackson County near Carancahua, where Mr. Lewis served as postmaster for a number of years. He was a prominent and successful farmer and stock raiser and was identified with much of the early development of this section and Palacios. He was a charter member of the local First Baptist Church, serving as a deacon most of the time and was a regular attendant of services as long as health permitted. He also served as a trustee of the Palacios Baptist Academy and was always interested in which he resided a better place to live.
He is survived by one son, Harley C. Lewis, of Palacios; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Columiba Johns wife of Dr. Amos E. Johns, of Long Island, New York, and Mrs. Charles V. Yeamans, of Bay City. Five grand children, Mrs. E. Y. Willis, Jr., of Culpepper, Va., Miss Jeanette Johns and Slayton Johns, of New York, Robert Best Lewis and Nettie Charlene Lewis, Palacios; nieces, Mrs. Pearla Baker, of Lockhart, Miss Willie Frances Lancaster, of Houston, nephews, Lewis Boolon, Lockhart; Henry Fristoe, Austin, and Dr. Edgar H. Lancaster of Houston. Funeral services were held from the Brandon-Duffy Funeral Home, Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 2 p. m., Rev. L. W. Crouch, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was made in the Palacios Cemetery.
