Andy January

Andrew “Andy” January, a bootblack at a local barber shop and a resident of Palacios for many years, died early Monday morning, October 5, at Wagner General Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Sunday, October 11, at the Pilgrim Rose Baptist Church, corner of 6th and Moor. Interment will be in the Palacios Cemetery.

Mexican Shoots Self Accidentally – Byselia Jarra

Byselia Jarra, a Mexican living on the Duncan place on East Bay was injured fatally Monday by the accidental discharge of his shotgun while out hunting rabbits. He was taken to the hospital in Bay City for treatment, but died shortly after arriving there. The remains were brought to Palacios for interment Tuesday.

Final Rites Are Held Here For Dennis Wayne Jarrett

Funeral services for Dennis Wayne Jarrett, 218 Welch, were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Thursday, December 24 at 4 p. m. with the Rev. Jerry Lyons of the Trinity Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Born July 10, 1959, the baby passed away Wednesday, Dec. 23 at the Bayview General Hospital.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Jarrett and two brothers.

Ruth Jendry

Funeral services for Ruth Rogers Jendry, 81, of Palacios, were held Jan. 15, 1999 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charlie Parker officiating. Interment will be held at the Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Jendry was born June 23, 1917 in Ash Grove, MO to the late Harry Simons and Hettie Mae Dawson Bell. She died at her residence Jan. 13, 1999.

She was a member of the Nazarene Church, a resident of Palacios since 1929 and was a retired Custom Account Supervisor with CP&L with 25 years of service. Mrs. Jendry was also the co-founder of the Moonlight Bay Bed and Breakfast.

Mrs. Jendry is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Rita Gaye and Earl Hudson of Palacios; four grandchildren, Cynthia Gaye Sells and husband, Robert Harold, of Palacios, David Charles Fields and wife, Catherine Celeste, of Elgin, TX., Abe Hudson of Palacios and Mardee Carson and husband, Kevin, of Ringold, GA.; one great granddaughter, Sarah Nicole Sells of Palacios; sister-in-law Opal Rogers of Austin; nephew Mike Rogers and wife, Ellen, of Austin; nieces Karen Bell McClellan and husband, Ron, of Olathe, Kansas, Sandra Fraley and husband, Dean, of Morrison, CO., Gerry Blankenship of Rome, GA, Wyma Rogers of Newport, OR, and Beth Rogers and husband, Ron, of Eugene, OR. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Joe W. Rogers, and by her second husband, Victor Jendry, and one brother, Harold L. Bell.

Pallbearers were George Kana, Sammy Davidson, Abe Hudson, Ted Bates, Michael Rogers, Mike Beard, Carl Baldwin and Carl Zajicek.

Claude Lee Jenkins

Funeral services for Claude Lee Jenkins were held at the Palacios Funeral Home at 10 a. m. Wednesday, May 16, with the Rev. J. R. Gwin officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Son of the late James Russell and Evelyn McAllister Jenkins, he was born February 2, 1903 and died at his home at 416 Ritchie Street Monday, May 14. He had been a resident of Palacios for 15 years and was a retired dragline operator for Parker Bros.

Survivors include seven daughters, Dorothy Sharber of Garland, Evelyn Jones of Bay City, Betty McFarlain and Allie Jean Hamlin of Palacios, Mary Jane King of Longview, Rose Ann Bankston of Blessing and Edith Littlejohn of Houston; four sons, Claude Jenkins of Markham, Charles Jenkins of Palacios, Roy Jenkins of Garland and Earl Jenkins of Greenville; one sister, Elona Cruz of Oyster Creek; five brothers, Grady Jess Jenkins, Lon Jenkins and Joe Jenkins of McKinney, Raymond Jenkins of Nevada and Leonard Jenkins of Houston; 25 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

David Jenkins

Funeral services for David Jenkins were held at 11:00 a. m. Wednesday, February 11, at the Palacios Funeral Home.

Mr. Jenkins was born March 3, 1879 and passed away February 9, 1970 in El Campo. Rev. Rayford Harris of the First Baptist Church was in charge of the services. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Ann Shafer of Dallas; Texas; two nephews, Billy Jenkins of Palacios, and Bob Jenkins of Corpus Christi; one niece Mrs. Elizabeth Cotton of Houston; also one sister-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Jenkins, of 100 Commerce St., Palacios, Texas.

Myrtle Marie Jenkins

Funeral services for Mrs. Myrtle Marie Jenkins were held Tuesday, July 17, at 10 a. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. J. R. Gwin officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Born July 13, 1912 in Polk County, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Burton Emory Robert Thomas Rose and Maude Margaret Watson Rose. She had been a resident of Palacios for 18 years and had worked for Collins Seafoods. She passed away Sunday July 15, in Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City after an illness of several months.

She is survived by six daughters, Edith M. Littlejohn of Houston, Evalyn M. Jones of Bay City, Betty J. McFarlane and Allie J. Hamlin of Palacios; Mary J. King of Longview and Rose Ann Bankston of Blessing; one stepdaughter, Dorothy Sharber of Garland; two sons Claude W. Jenkins of Markham and Charles H. Jenkins of Palacios; two step sons, Roy Jenkins of Garland and Earl Jenkins of Greenville; three sisters, Emaline Reed of Van Vleck, Lillian Brumbelow and Dorthea Mosier of Palacios; one brother Elmer K. Rose of Chandler Ariz.; 23 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Ruth Jenkins

Funeral services for Ruth Jenkins, 88, were held Jan. 7 at 2 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Ronnie Floyd officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Jenkins was born July 10, 1895 in Kemp and died Jan. 6, 1984 at Wagner General Hospital. She was the daughter of James Monroe and Martha Cox Shamblee.

Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Cotton of Houston; two sons, R. A. Jenkins of Corpus Christi and J. W. Jenkins of Palacios; seven grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

The Passing of Mrs. Wm. H. Jenkins - Sarah Ellen Mounts
Jenkins

Sarah Ellen Mounts was born August 23, 1854, at Amity, Pennsylvania. When she was eleven years of age her parents moved to Indiana, where, when she was 22 years of age she was married to William H. Jenkins. Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins and their three children came to Texas in 1883 and have lived in the state ever since.

Mrs. Jenkins very early in life united with the Methodist church and until failing health prevented, was an untiring and faithful worker in her Master’s vineyard. After more than two years of intense suffering she passed to her reward last Monday. She was fully prepared for the end and asked her family to meet her in the Great Beyond. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Goodenough at the Palacios cemetery Tuesday afternoon and the remains tenderly laid to rest. Besides the numerous friends to mourn her loss there are the sorrowing husband and seven sons and daughters. The sons are: James A., David, Thomas A., Francis M., and Joseph W.; the daughters, Mrs. Otis J. Foraker and Mrs. Ann Turner.

Walter William Jennings

Funeral services for Walter William Jennings were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Thursday, March 20, at 10 o’clock in the morning with the Rev. J. R. Gwin officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Son of William T. and Dora Isabel Tubbs Jennings, he was born September 9, 1905 in Adamsville, Texas. A resident of this area since 1961, he was a retired maintenance man at Wagner General Hospital in Palacios. He died March 18 at Citizen’s Memorial Hospital in Victoria.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Laverne Jennings; his mother, Mrs. Dora Isabel Hatley; three daughters, Peggy Barker of Palacios, Karen Walleck of Francitas and Sherry Hlozek of Houston; two sons, Willard Jennings of Napa, Calif. and Chuck Jennings of Palacios and eight grandchildren.

Benjamin H. Jensen

Funeral services for Benjamin H. Jensen were held at the Palacios Funeral home Tuesday, October 14, at 2:30 p. m with the Rev. Rayford Harris officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A son of Peter and Sorena Thoner Jensen, he was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on September 14, 1893. A veteran of World War I, he had been a resident of Palacios since 1909. He died Monday morning, October 13, of an apparent heart attack.

He is survived by his sister, Mrs. V. E. Stokes and brother, Ellis Jensen of Palacios.

Delbert Jensen

Funeral services for Delbert Jensen, 76, of Palacios, are scheduled for 2 p. m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Palacios with the Rev. Hollas Hoffman officiating. Burial will be in the Palacios Cemetery.

Mr. Jensen was born Oct. 25, 1917 in Matagorda County to Ethel Harbison and Adolph Elias Jensen and died Nov. 27, 1993 at Wagner General Hospital in Palacios.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Palacios.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Naomi Savage Jensen of Palacios; two sons, Frank Andrew Jensen and Bernard Houston Jensen, both of Alvin; four sisters, Evelyn Loggins of Temple, Ida Tanton of Ganado, Leona Alzner of Maryviille, Tenn. and Gloria Gilroy of Henrietta, Okla.; a brother, Ellis Jensen Jr. of Katy; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Sorena Thorner Jensen

Sorena Thorner, born in the land of the midnight sun, Christiana, Norway, Nov. 20, 1858, came to America in the year of 1880, married to Peter Jensen in the year of 1890, died at her old home near Palacios at the age of 63 years, 5 months and 9 days, April 29, 1922. She leaves to mourn her departure four children, Ellis and Bennie Jensen of Palacios, Mrs. Susie Harbison recently of Caney, Okla., and Mrs. Effie Sanderfer, of Port Lavaca, Texas, and six small grandchildren. Mr. Jensen having died seven years ago.

She was a member of the Lutheran church since her childhood, and many times during her long seige of suffering she spoke of her home over Yonder where there would be no more suffering or sorrow. We rejoice to know that mother is at last free from pain and are resigned to the will of our Lord who has prepared for us a place where we shall part no more.

Funeral services were held at the home Sunday at 3 P. M. conducted by Rev. C. F. Connor, of Palacios.

Emil C. “Red” Jewell

Funeral services for Emil C. “Red” Jewell, 82, of Palacios, were held Nov. 14 at 3 p. m. at Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bernard “Buck” Ritchea officiating. Interment followed at the Palacios Cemetery.

Jewell was born Jan. 21, 1906 in Holmesville, Gage Co., Nebraska, the son of Edd and Matilda Olson Jewell. He died Nov. 12, 1988 at Wagner General Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Ozway Harrison Jewell of Palacios; two daughters, Grace W. Dabbs of Brady, Tx. and Dorothy Ellen Baldwin of Baytown; two sons, B. J. Jewell of Port Lavaca and Pat Jewell of Palacios; one sister, Wilvian W. Renner of Huntington Beach, Calif.; 15 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Craig Jewell, Pat Hickl, Kenny Whitehead, James Jewell, James Baldwin and Paul Burow.

Funeral Services Held Tuesday, Aug. 23 For Dewey Oliver Johns

Funeral services for Dewey Oliver Johns were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Tuesday, August 23, at 4:30 p. m. with John Green, pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of El Campo, officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A foreman for the M. & F Boat Works, he was born April 23, 1919 in DeKalb, Texas to T. M. and Angeline Mushaney Johns. He was a World War II veteran. He died at his home at 400 First Street Friday, August 19.

Surviving are his wife, Violet Elva Johns of Palacios; one daughter Barbara Carr of Chowchilla, Calif.; three sons, Daniel Dewey Johns, Palacios; Orvil Franklin Johns, Kansas City, Kansas; James Melton Johns of Modesto, Calif.; five sisters, Noleta Telley and Verdell Arnold of Palacios Etta Tucker, Porterville, Calif.; Ardell Davis and Dessa Nelson of Chowchilla, Calif.; two brothers, Frank and Odell Johns of Chowchilla, Calif.

Audrey Marie Harvey Johnson

Services for Audrey Marie Harvey Johnson, 81, of Angleton, were held Saturday, Nov. 14 at the First Baptist Church in Angleton with Dr. Rodney Bowman and Rev. Robert Carter officiating. Burial followed at the Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Johnson died Nov. 11, 1992 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston.

Mrs. Johnson, formerly of Palacios and Freeport, was resident of Angleton since 1960 and a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, L.W. Johnson of Angleton; son and daughter-in-law, Bryan and Jana Johnson of Angleton; son, Lyndon Johnson of Houston; grandchildren, Willard Bryan Johnson, Jr., Joel Aaron Johnson, Jessica Lynn Johnson and Rachel Alexander and great-grandchild, Emma Jane Alexander.

Pallbearers are the deacons of the First Baptist Church.

Charles R. Johnson

Funeral services for Charles R. Johnson were held August 27 at 3 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel.

Johnson died at his residence August 26, 1984.

Miss Ellen Johnson

The remains of Miss Ellen Johnson were brought here Saturday from Houston, and interred in the Palacios cemetery.

Miss Johnson, a sister of Mrs. E. L. Hardy, of this city, was owner and operator of the Elite Massage Service in Houston, where she had lived since 1929. She was 41 years of age and died Thursday, Sept. 18, in a Houston hospital. A brother, K. W. Johnson, of Texas City, also survives.

Services Held For Elmer I. Johnson At 3 P. M. Thursday

Funeral services were held today (Thursday) for Elmer I. Johnson, 78, at the First Methodist Church with the Rev. Rayford Harris and Rev. W. P. Carmichael, officiating. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Johnson, who lived at 505 Moore, was born in Kansas July 27, 1875 and passed away at 8:15 p. m. April 20. He was a resident of Palacios for 45 years.

Included among his survivors are: a son, Spencer Johnson of Palacios; sisters, Mrs. Adlie Farmer of Denver, Colorado and Mrs. Lou Colter of San Bernardino, California; three brothers, Bert Johnson of Denver, Colorado, Will Johnson, Nara Visa, New Mexico and Harry Johnson, Marsielles, Missouri and four grandchildren.

Johnson was preceded in death by his wife and son, Leo Johnson.

Guy Johnson

Guy Johnson, a former county commissioner, died unexpectedly at his home at 9 a. m. Friday, June 16.

Funeral services were held at 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Connolly officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Born November 11, 1889, in Cannon Mills, Arkansas, he was the son of Mary Moss and D. Johnson. A resident of this community for 56 years he served as commissioner of precinct 3 for 18 years and was a member of the Palacios Independent School Board of Trustees for 20 years, 16 of which he served as president.

He is survived by his wife, Tenna; three daughters, Mrs. Ruby Lee Chamblee and Mrs. Mary King of Palacios, Mrs. Margaret Herman of Corpus Christi; five sons, Winfred and Charles Johnson of Palacios, George of Houston, Ballard of Aransas Pass and Mack Johnson of Victoria; three sisters, Miss Carrie Johnson, Mrs. Iva D. Allison and Mrs. Minnie Small of Napa, California; 28 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.
