Funeral services for Gilbert Guy Hockey were held at 2 p. m. Sunday, January 13, at the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Connolly officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. Born January 23, 1886 in White City, Kansas, he had been resident of Palacios since 1913. He was a retired plumber. He passed away Saturday, January 12, in Wagner General. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Mount of El Campo; Mrs. Clara Jo Franks of Little Rock, Ark.; one sister, Miss Ethel Hockey of Palacios, five grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.

Funeral services for Herbert Earnest Hockey, 20, were held Sunday from the Methodist church with Rev. J. E. Mack officiating. He died Friday afternoon of last week at the Station Hospital, Camp Hulen, where he had been taken following a traffic accident in which his motorcycle was involved with an automobile, Thursday evening at the west end of Main street. His brother, Ralph, who is attending the New Mexico A. & M. College at Las Cruces, N. M., was prevented from attending the funeral because of injuries received in another accident which happened at about the same time as that which killed his brother. Young Hockey was a member of the Senior class at the Palacios High School and was employed as care-taker at the school for the past two years, where he was popular with his classmates and teachers. He is survived by his father Ralph Hockey, Sr., the brother in New Mexico and his younger brother Billy. Other relatives living in Palacios include two aunts, Misses Ethel and Dora Hockey and an uncle, Gilbert Hockey and his family. His mother died some 14 years ago. Rev. J. G. Ramsey offered the prayer during the services while Rev. L. W. Crouch gave the obituary. Interment was in Palacios cemetery.

Mrs. Miriam Abbott was born at Bridport, England June 20, 1845, and died at her home in this city, Jan. 13, 1932. In 1867 she was married to Matthew Hockey, and the year following, sailed with her husband and one child to America. After a short residence in Chicago they settled with the English Colony at White City, Kansas, where they lived for 39 years, and reared their family of 11 children. In 1910 they moved to Palacios, Texas, where Mr. Hockey died in 1923. Four children have preceded their mother in death. With the passing of Mrs. Hockey, passes the last charter member of the Methodist Church at White City, Kan., also the last of the English Colony that settled there over 60 years ago. During her stay of 22 years in Palacios she made many friends. Her life was one of those quiet lives, that all admire and which will be missed not…in the home, but among her neighbors and friends. Mr. Benny Eugene Hodges, who passed away at his home in this city, Monday, April 19, was born April 17, 1881. He was married to Miss Ella Smith on February 2, 1901, and for these 42 years they have faced life’s tasks together. Mr. Hodges was converted and baptized into the Baptist Church at Hawley Church near Blessing and after coming to Palacios some 18 years ago he moved his membership to the local First Baptist Church. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. B. E. Hodges, one daughter, Mrs. Frances Pride, of Houston, three sons, W. H., of Palacios, O. L. and D. C. Hodges, of Houston, and seven grandchildren, also surviving are five sisters, Mrs. Hattie Vickers and Mrs. Essie Ardone, of Port Arthur, Mrs. Viola Reeves, Austin, Mrs. Connie Balehouse and Mrs. Madeline Martin of San Antonio, and two brothers, W. L. Hodges, Victoria, and Henry Hodges, Port Neches. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Palacios Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. L. W. Crouch and burial made in Palacios Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ella Hodges were held at the Houmont Park First Baptist Church in Houston Monday, February 24 at 10 a. m. with Rev. David Sebesta and Rev. Jerry Lyons officiating. The body was brought overland to Palacios where it was interred in the Palacios Cemetery at 3 p. m. Monday. A former resident of Palacios, she was born April 11, 1883 in Comanche, Texas. For the past 19 years she had lived in Houston, where until two weeks before her death she had been an active worker in the Houmont Park First Baptist Church. She passed away February 22, in a Houston hospital, where she had been a patient for one week. She is survived by one son, O. L. Hodges, one daughter, Mrs. O. B. Price both of Houston, eight grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Funeral services for H. V. Hodges were held at 4 p. m. Sunday, March 14, at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Leon Maxwell and Rev. R. J. Gwin officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. Son of Mrs. Vera H. Ramsey of Palacios and the late Herman Hodges, he was born in Palacios on March 16, 1930, and died in Wagner General Hospital on March 13, 1971, after a lingering illness. He is survived by his mother; wife, Mrs. Shirley Hodges; two daughters, Mrs. Debbie Lynn Green and Rhonda Hodges; one son, Danny Ray Hodges all of Houston; one sister, Mrs. Gloria Gaye Williams of Palacios and one grandchild.

The death angel visited our city early Wednesday morning and took from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Hodges their darling baby daughter, who had been with them since January 1, 1932. She had been ill several days and all that medical aid, tender love and careful nursing could do was done to alleviate her suffering. Funeral services were held Thursday morning at the home, conducted by Rev. Carrol B. Ray of the First Baptist Church, with interment in the Palacios cemetery, under the direction of Duffy and Rittenhouse Undertaking Co. The bereaved young parents have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.

Funeral services for William Herman Hodges were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Saturday, December 8 at 10 a. m. with Rev. Paul Strother of Houston officiating assisted by Rev. Rayford Harris. Burial was in the Palacios cemetery. Mr. Hodges, who was born November 3, 1905, died at the Bay View Hospital shortly after 8 p. m. Thursday December 6. He was found near the road about 4 miles west of Blessing with a shotgun wound in the stomach that law enforcement officers called self inflicted. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Ella Hodges of Houston; a daughter, Mrs. Gloria Morton of Palacios; a son, H. V. Hodges of Houston; a sister, Mrs. Frances Price of Houston; a brother, Otis Hodges of Houston and five grandchildren.

Funeral services for infant Jeffrey Michale Holdgraf were held Saturday at 11 a. m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Gerard Cernoch officiating. Interment followed at the Palacios Cemetery. Jeffrey was born April 6, 1986 in Victoria, the son of Wayne and Kathleen Holdgraf of Palacios. He died Oct 24, 1986 at Wagner General Hospital. Surviving in addition to his parents are his paternal grandparents, Kenneth and Connie Holdgraf of Sinton, maternal grandmother, Brigid Gwosdz of Victoria; great-grandparents, Annie Machicek of Edna and Bud and Angie Coppedge of Cuero; and a brother, Gary Wayne Holdgraf, Jr. of Palacios. Funeral services for Mrs. Eva Mae Holloway were held Thursday afternoon, September 14, at 2:30 o’clock at the Church of Christ with Norris Neeley and Coy Day, of Victoria, conducted the services. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. Born May 25, 1901 in Burnet County, Texas, a daughter of the late Louis and Mollie Tedford Hyman, she died September 12. She had been a resident of Palacios for approximately 20 years. Surviving are her husband, F. H. Funeral services were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Thursday afternoon, September 28 at 4 p. m. for Gilva Lloyd Holloway. The Rev. Milford Zirkel conducted the services and burial was in the Palacios Cemetery. He was born December 19, 1896, in Jewell County, Kansas, to Francis Marian and Nellie Martin Kent Holloway. He had been a resident of this area for approximately 40 years, was a member of the Methodist Church and a veteran of World War I. He died Tuesday night, September 26, in Wagner General Hospital where he had been a patient the past month. Surviving are his wife, Leah Holloway, one son, Robert Holloway, one granddaughter, all of Palacios; three sisters, Leta Stevens of Jewell, Kansas, Allie Fenner of Jewell, Kansas and Ruth Scovel of Ceres, Calif.; and two brothers, Harold Holloway of Indio, Calif., and Walter Holloway of Ionia, Kansas.

Funeral services for Mrs. Leah I. Holloway were held at 10:00 a. m. Thursday, October 18, at the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Connolly officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. Mrs. Holloway, a member of the Palacios Independent School District faculty for 21 years before retiring in 1969, was found dead at her home at 311 Rorem last Tuesday morning. She is presumed to have died of a heart attack Monday, October 15, between 4 and 5 in the afternoon. A native of Kansas, she was born October 18, 1900 a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Cook. She taught in Collegeport from 1944 to 1948 and in Palacios from 1948 until she retired. She had been a resident of Palacios since 1953 when she and her late husband, Gilvey L. Holloway, moved here from Collegeport. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Women’s Division of the Chamber of Commerce and the Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived by one son, Robert Holloway of Palacios; two sisters, Mrs. Fern Schulz of Long Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Ester Smith of Palacios; one brother, Ward…[last portion missing]

Funeral services for Meredith Holloway were held Friday morning, March 19, in the Palacios Funeral Home conducted by Clyde L. Rogers, pastor of the local Church of Christ. Mr. Holloway, born March 21, 1855 in South Carolina died March 17, 1948 at the home of his son, F. H. Holloway, with whom he had resided since 1945. He had been an invalid for the past five years, confined to his bed most of the time and passing at the age of 93 years closed a long and eventful life. Five children survive their father, two daughters and three sons, namely Mrs. W. H. Briggs, and Mrs. J. R. Sexton, A. M., J. W. and F. H. Holloway. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Frankie Lewes and two brothers, J. B. and Will Holloway. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Naomi M. Holloway, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Matteson of Palacios, was born April 6, 1918, in Warden, Wash. She came with her parents to Texas in 1929. After graduating from Bay City High School, she attended Bresce College in Kansas for two years and returned to Houston, where she completed a business course. She was employed by the Bay Chevrolet Company for about seven years and the last year by Moore Brothers Electric Company in Houston. On December 15, 1946, she was married to Wesley C. Holloway of Tacoma, Wash. She was a member of the Nazarene Church from early childhood and lived a consecrated Christian life. She left her loved ones on August 8, 1951, after a brief illness. Survivors are her husband and parents, a brother, Cpl. Rodell Matteson of San Francisco, and a sister, Mrs. L. H. Bell of Palacios.

Benjamin Lee Holmes, aged 75 years, 2 months and 28 days, died at the home of his son near Palacios, March 13. On December 24, 1889 he was married to Miss Mary Lenora Prather in Yell County, Ark., who preceded him in death on March 14, 1938. Mr. and Mrs. Holmes moved to Texas, August 18, 1896 and located at Olivia. They moved from there to a farm near Palacios in October, 1923, where they resided until September 1935 when they went back to Olivia to make their home. The deceased is survived by six children, three sons, Burrel P., of Palacios, C. Felix and J. A. Holmes, of Port Arthur; three daughters, Mrs. R. G. George, Mrs. T. O. Ware, of Port Arthur, and Mrs. T. C. Eminheiser, of Anahuac. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1:30 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home, Rev. C. F. Connor, officiating. From there the remains were taken to Olivia and burial was made under the direction of the Palacios Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Burl P. Holmes were held at the First Baptist Church April 16 with the Rev. Rayford B. Harris and the Rev. L. W. Crouch officiating. Services started at 3:30 p. m. with burial at the Palacios Cemetery. Holmes was born in Arkansas April 27, 1892 and died April 15 of heart failure due to natural causes. He fell dead at noon immediately after finishing work for lunch. Included among his survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Burl P. Holmes; five daughters, Mrs. Charles Johnson, Palacios; Mrs. W. W. Joseph Wade Houpt, 76, of Palacios, Texas passed away peacefully at his home on August 8, 2017. He was born November 21, 1940 in Midland, Texas to the late Wade D. Houpt and Juanita Agnes Richardson Houpt. He had been a resident of Palacios for 34 years and fought a very brave battle with cancer the last 18 months. He served in the U.S. Navy for six years during the Vietnam War. He retired in 2002 as an Iron Worker under Local 84; was a member of the South Houston Bass Club; a 33rd Degree Mason and member of the Blessing Masonic Lodge # 411; and was also known as Captain Joe under the trawler “Kathy H”. In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by a sister, Emily A. Whitton; and great granddaughter, Alayija Houpt. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Kathryn Houpt; children, Carolyn D. Houpt, Jo A. Gosselin and her husband John, Charles W. Houpt and Robert W. Houpt; brother, Edgar D. Houpt and his wife Sandy; grandchildren, Shelly Thompson, Justin W. Burial services for Mrs. Dorothy Denslow House, widow of Leonard A. House, were held in the mausoleum in the Palacios Cemetery Monday afternoon at 4 p. m. with the Rev. Leslie E. Webb officiating. Daughter of the late Ruth Wakefield and George Wakefield Denslow, she was born November 27, 1900 in Kansas City, Mo. and passed away November 20 in Flagstaff, Ariz. where she had resided the past 10 years. She was a former resident of Palacios, having lived here 13 years. While here she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Art Guild, and the Tres Palacios Garden Club. She is survived by two daughters, Eileen Reynolds of Longview, Texas and Adele Armstrong of Flagstaff, two grandsons and two granddaughters.

Funeral services for Leonard Alfred House were held at 3 p. m. Saturday, September 22, in the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Stone officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. He was born February 25, 1898 in Cleveland, Ohio and died Wednesday, September 19, 1962 in Wagner General Hospital. Following the death of his father, when only an infant, he was raised by his grandmother, Mrs. Altie Brackman, and after her death joined the Cavalry and was sent to guard the border at Brownsville, Texas. During World War I he served with the 33rd Division. A master of cello, bass and tuba, Mr. House played in the Houston symphony for two years but the nervous strain was too great for his health, undermined by war wounds. He was then offered the position of supervisor of music in the Overton schools but as he didn’t have a degree the job ended after three months. He then returned to Houston to enter the University of Houston where he received his bachelor of arts degree in 1938. He was band director in Hempstead and Boling before coming to Palacios in August 1947 as director of music in the schools. In 1950 he went to Gorman but returned to Palacios a year later and entered the accounting business which he continued until his death. While in Palacios he served as commander of the American Legion post, was a member of the Rotary Club, chamber of commerce and for several years was official score keeper for the Little League association. Until last year, he had played the chimes at the annual Tree of Light ceremonies in Houston since it was founded in 1919. Survivors include his wife of Palacios; two daughters, Mrs. C. B. Reynolds of Longview and Mrs. C. R. Armstrong of Flagstaff, Arizona and four grandchildren.

Funeral services for Frederic H. Houston, 85 years of age, will be held at the Palacios Funeral Home Friday, January 14, at 2 p. m. with Rev. Logan V. Cockrum, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church conducting the rites. Mr. Houston, a resident of Palacios for many years, passed away Tuesday night, January 11, in Brenham, Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife, who died on April 24, 1954. Interment will be in the Palacios Cemetery with graveside services conducted by the Odd Fellows Lodge.
