Mr. J. W. Hellums, one of Palacios oldest and most esteemed citizens, died at the family at home at six o’clock Wednesday evening, after a protracted illness. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church yesterday afternoon at 4 o’clock under the auspices of the I. O. O. F. lodge, and conducted by Rev. M. M. Wolf, president of Palacios college, followed by interment at the city cemetery. Mr. John Wilson Hellums was born at Pontotoc, Miss., December 6, 1850, and was nearly 61 years of age at the time of his death. He moved to Water Valley, Miss., on reaching manhood, and with the exception of three years at Natchez, resided there until he moved to Palacios in October, 1907. He is survived by his wife and three children, Corinne, Mabel and Clarence. Mr. Hellums was one of Palacios most active and enthusiastic citizens, and in promoting the advancement and welfare of the city, gave much of his time and attention most unselfishly. He was one of the most active in securing the enumeration necessary for the incorporation necessary for the incorporation of the city at the time it was organized. He was elected as a member of the first city council, in which capacity he did most valuable service. After his term as alderman had expired he was elected city recorder, but did not qualify on account of his failing health. In other public capacities, Mr. Hellums did much for the good of the city and rendered services for which the people are grateful. He was a faithful and consistent member of the Baptist church, and also a member of the local Odd Fellows lodge, where he was held in high esteem, being the secretary of that institution the term preceding his death. The lodge as a body took charge of the preparations for the funeral, conducting the ritualistic ceremonies. The lodge and a delegation of the Rebekahs escorted the remains from the residence to the church, and from the church to the cemetery where the last sad rites were performed. The funeral was well attended, and the discourse by Rev. Wolf was a beautiful tribute to the memory of the departed. A special feature of the church service was the beautiful solo, “Abide With Me,” sang by Mrs. Wolf. The floral offerings were very beautiful. Mr. Geo. W. Rayburn and son, Binford, from Water Valley, Miss., and Miss Mabel, daughter of the deceased, who is located at Houston, came in on the train yesterday evening to attend the funeral. The wife of Mr. Rayburn is the only sister of the deceased. In the deep affliction which has befallen them the bereaved family has the sincere sympathy of all the people of the city.
