“Well done, thou good and faithful servant,” has been said to another of our citizens. To those who knew Mr. A. A. Hayes any written eulogy will seem inadequate. For those who were not so fortunate, there is no delineation that will explain his unique character so perfectly as to say that he was a most Christian gentleman. Seeing His own image so clearly outlined in the molten gold the Great Refiner said, “It is enough, come up higher.” In his passing, Palacios has lost one of her oldest and most highly esteemed citizens; the First Baptist Church has lost one of its most loved and faithful members; the Board of Deacons one of its most competent advisors, and the family have lost a kind and loving husband and father. The hardest worker on any job, glad to help anybody, faithful, loyal, and efficient, “Daddy Hayes” was a man with a keen sense of humor and an appreciation of wholesome fun,--a jolly companion on a fishing trip—and a welcome addition to any crowd—old or young.
“To know
him was to love him, Mr. Hayes came to Palacios in 1912. He died Wednesday, February 18th, 1931. The funeral services were conducted Friday morning by his pastor, Rev. Carroll B. Ray in the First Baptist Church, which was filled with loyal friends. Rev. Ray based his eulogy on the following scriptures;--Psalms 9, 3-6, 10; 11 Cor. 5, 1-10; 11 Tim. 4, 6-8; Rev. 21, 1-7; Eccl. 12, 1. The profusion of the beautiful flowers bespoke the loving sympathy not only of friends here but those from a distance who were unable to attend. The interment was in Palacios Cemetery. He leaves to mourn his loss, his devoted wife and seven living children: Mrs. E. R. Chastine; Edwin Hayes; Mrs. Z. K. Westerville; Mrs. Fred Close, all of Norman, Oklahoma; Mrs. Garland Brooking of LaWard, Texas; Nobel L. and Nora of Palacios. Besides these there were two who died in childhood. The following is copied from a biographical record commemorating the achievements of citizens who contributed to the progress of Oklahoma:-- “Alpheus A. Hayes comes of a family whose members have ever been a credit to the localities in which their lot has been cast, and to the occupations which have engaged their attention and ability. He was born in Calhoun County, Mich. Sept. 11, 1848, and is a son of Horace B. and Martha Hayes. His father was held in fond remembrance by his industrious and successful son. “A. A. Hayes had fortunate opportunities for acquiring an education, and his training in public schools was supplements by two terms at Hillsdale College. Had he had the inclination he could have studied still further, but at the age of nineteen his independent spirit asserted itself, and he longed to start out in the world for himself. “For seven years he worked by the month in different capacities. In 1873 he was united in marriage, in Linn County, Missouri, with Margaret Bullock, who was born in Lenerick, Canada. “After his marriage Mr. Hayes purchased eighty acres of land in Linn County and for seven years conducted successful agricultural and stock-raising enterprises. He then moved to Sullivan County and bought three hundred and eighty acres, and continued his former occupations on a much extended scale. His land was extremely wild and uncultivated, and required much arduous application to reduce it to a condition of utility and resource. In 1881 Mr. Hayes followed a still leading ambition, and in Oklahoma sought to succeed on even broader lines. He purchased several claims and became one of the largest landowners in Cleveland County. He fitted his claims with all modern improvements, and conducted his farm in the most scientific and up-to-date manner, giving his attention notably to agriculture but also to successful stock raising. For a number of years he operated a threshing machine.”

The remains of Mr. A. W. Haynes, who committed suicide on his farm at Carancahua last Friday morning, were brought to the city that afternoon by undertaker Rittenhouse and embalmed. Funeral services were held at the family home in this city Monday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock, conducted by Rev. Israel, pastor of the Baptist Church, followed by interment at the city cemetery. Deceased was about 51 years of age. Brooding over unfavorable business affairs and financial reverses, resulting in mental aberration, is supposed to have been the cause which led to the deplorable act. The deceased leaves his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Otto Kluth, of Carancahua, and Miss Carrie Haynes, who is with her mother, and a son in another state, to mourn his loss. Mr. Haynes was well known in the city and the Carancahua neighborhood as an active, energetic worker and a progressive business man, and to all who knew him the news of his death came as a great shock and surprise. In their sudden and trying bereavement the family have the sincere sympathy of all. Palacios Beacon, July 5, 1912 Mr. A. W. Haynes Found Dead on His Farm Near Carancahua Mr. A. W. Haynes, a well known farmer near Carancahua was found dead on his farm some time last night or early this morning with a knife sticking in his neck. The family home is in town where Mrs. Haynes and the youngest daughter reside, but Mr. Haynes spent his time on the farm with his oldest daughter, Mrs. Otto Kluth, whose husband is operating the farm. Undertaker Rittenhouse and coroner Willis went to Carancahua this afternoon to hold an inquest and prepare the remains for burial. If this was a case of suicide, the cause is not known. Mr. Haynes had been an active and successful farmer, and his crops were among the best in the neighborhood. If it is suicide, as supposed, it must have resulted from some temporary mental aberration. News of the distressing happening reached the Beacon just as it was going to press to-day, hence our information is very meager, and this is all we could learn concerning the matter. In their sudden distress the family have the sympathy of all our people.
