Fourteen-year-old Johnny Gilian of Palacios drowned in a swimming accident at the southend of Turning Basin No. 2 Sunday. According to Wilson, the Gonzales infant, son of Juan and Juana Pena Gonzales was apparently taking a bath with two older brothers, age 11 and nine. After a short period, the mother noticed the two oldest brothers playing in the yard. She then went in to check on the youngest and found him lying face down in the tub. Natalia Gonzales, 16 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Antonoio R. Gonzales, died in the hospital in Victoria, Wednesday, Feb. 27, as a result from injuries received when she attempted to jump from a moving truck. The body was brought here where on Friday services were held in the home conducted by Rev. Robt. M. McGehee, and funeral rites held in St. Anthony's Church with Father H. L. Bauman officiating. She is survived by her parents, two sisters, Marina and Felipe Gonzales, and three brothers, Augustine, Ralph and Tony Gonzales. The marriage of her brother, Augustine, to Josephine Ottino, was to have been Thursday at 5 p. m. and Natalia was to be one of the bridesmaids. A report from Port Lavaca where the accident occurred as given by Sheriff Leonard M. Fisher, states the investigation disclosed that Natalia Gonzales was fatally injured when she jumped from a panel 1/2-ton truck driven by G. Ochoa, as it slowed down to about 40 miles per hour. She rolled about 38 feet after striking the highway at the east end of the Lavaca Bay causeway, and was unconscious when picked up by Chester Charnetski, State Highway Department employee, who was working near by. The sheriff also stated that Ochoa, driver of teh truck, apparently in a drunken condition, picked up 8 or 10 women at Palacios to take them to Port Lavaca where they were employed at the Eagle Pass Products plant. He said the women informed him that they didn't realize Ochoa was intoxicated until after they had gotten into the car and started. According to the passengers Mr. Fisher said, Ochoa began an argument with one of the women and then began driving recklessly at a high rate of speed. The group, frightened, huddled in the car and agreed to jump out if the drive slowed down. This he did when approaching where workmen were on the highway, and the girl opened the door and jumped out. Ochoa went back to where the workmen had gathered around the girl, witnesses told the sheriff. The injured girl was rushed to the Victoria hospital in an ambulance. Ochoa, a 25-year-old cannery employee who lives in Palacios was charged with negligent homicide, according to Sheriff Fisher, placed in jail and bond set at $2,000.00. He had not made bond when this report was given.
