Mrs. Calla P. Fant, daughter of S. B. and M. L. McLellan, was born in Talladega County, Ala., Feb. 3, 1854. She departed this life Jan. 13, 1933, at the age of 78 years, 11 months and 10 days. She was married to John C. Fant, and to this union five children were born. They moved to Texas in 1897 and have lived here since. She is survived by two sons, S. L., of Palacios and U. E. of Houston, one daughter, Mrs. Lillian Ellison, of Waco, and one sister, Mrs. Jas E. Wilson, of Leesburg, Fla., and other relatives. She united with Methodist church when quite young. Truly, hers was a life of usefulness. Tho’ still a young lady during the civil war, she, along with her brothers and sister, was thrust into service, and from that date on her life was one of servitude for others. Thru post-bellum days, widowhood with a family of small children, and even at an age when most people retire from active duties, she was still serving her family. Truly a mother, though hindered with self, she at no time lost sight of or lost faith in her Maker, and few in our present mad rush, find time to ferret out the intricacies of His Word as she did, and those of us who knew her best, know with what patience and pleasantness she practices her faith and acted as helper and comforter to all with whom she came in contact. Few lives have been filled with a more practicable and everyday application of Christian religions than hers. Funeral services were held at the residence Sunday afternoon with Rev Robt. Paine, of the Methodist Church officiating. Burial was made in the Palacios cemetery, under the direction of the Palacios Funeral Home. Active pallbearers were: C. S. McLellan, A. D. Abbott, J. S. Walker, J. Lee, M. A. King and F. S. Hartwell. Relatives and friends here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Hartwell and children, Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Abbott, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Walker, Miss Lizzie Mansfield, and Mrs. Monroe King, Mr. Joe Lee, Miss Westmoreland, Houston; Mr. and Mrs. C. S. McLellan, Mrs. R. L. McLellan, and Miss Bess McLellan, Eagle Lake; Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Hardy, of Danevang; U. E. Fant, of Houston, and Mrs. Lillian Ellison, of Waco, who had been here with their mother during her last illness.

C. M. Fant, manager and one of the proprietors of the Palacios Pavilion, was fatally injured Monday by the explosion of a carbonic acid gas tank. The accident occurred about 5:30 p. m., while Mr. Fant was rocking the tank, which had no gauge, to charge it. No one was on the pavilion at the time but Mr. Williams, the caretaker, and R. G. Hendrick, a boy about 14 years of age, who assisted Mr. Fant at the soda fountain. They hurried to Mr. Fant immediately after the explosion and extricated him from the wreckage. The boy then rushed for assistance and to Dr. Wagner’s office. The explosion was heard distinctly up town and it was not long before quite a number of people were there to assist in any way possible. As soon as the doctor reached Mr. Fant he saw he was seriously injured and had a call sent to the hospital at Camp Palacios, asking for an ambulance. The injured man was taken out there as soon as possible, where surgeons and physicians did everything they could for him. A slug from the exploding tank had entered the right lower limb severing the femoral artery, close up to the body and he died from the loss of blood about 9 o’clock. Clayton M. Fant was born in Eden, Alabama, son of John and Calla McLellan Fant, Sept. 9, 1886, died at Palacios, Texas, August 4, 1930. He enlisted in the World War at Bay City, Texas, in June, 1918, and was sent to Camp Travis from where he was sent to France a member of Grave’s Registration Unit #305. His record as a soldier is excellent, being honorably discharged January 22nd, 1920. On June 3rd, 1923, he was married to Miss Mittie Lee, who preceded him in death two years ago last April. Surviving relatives are his two little daughters, Margaret Inez and Mary Louise, his aged mother, Mrs. C. P. Fant, and two brothers, S. L., of Palacios, U. E., of Laredo, one sister, Mrs. Lillian Ellison of Mart, Texas, an uncle, Dr. R. L. McLellan of Eagle Lake, and many other relatives. An impressive military funeral was held at Palacios Cemetery at 10 o’clock a. m. August 6th, 1930, under the auspices of the American Legion and Chaplain J. N. R. Score of Houston, assisted by a military escort from Camp Palacios. Those attending the funeral from a distance were: Dr. R. L. McLellan and wife of Eagle Lake, E. L. Hardy and wife, J. S. Walker, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hartwell and baby, Mrs. Jack Putney, Miss Elizabeth Mansfield, Mrs. J. O. Mansfield, Mr. Monroe King and wife, Mr. A. D. Abbott and wife, all of Houston; Mr. Bernard Frazier and Mr. Ralph Brown, Birmingham, Alabama, Mrs. U. E. Fant of Laredo, Mr. John Ellison and wife of Mart and Mr. Jep Lee, wife and daughter of Kingsville.

Our people were shocked and grieved early Monday morning when it was learned that Mrs. C. L. [M.] Fant had died the evening previous, as only a few near neighbors knew of her critical illness which developed just the day before she passed away. Mittie Lee, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Lee and was born in St. Clair County, Ala., in 1905. With her parents she moved to Blessing, Texas, in 1921. On June 5, 1925, she was married to C. L. Fant of this city. She had been a member of the Baptist Church since fourteen years of age. Besides the husband and other relatives to mourn her passing on, two little daughters, one two years old and the other an infant seven days old are left to never know the love and care of a mother. It seems doubly sad to have to give up one so young, so much beloved and so badly needed. Impressive services were held at the home on Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev. J. A. Derrick, assisted by Rev. John R. Campbell, and interment was made in the Palacios cemetery. The floral offerings were many and beautiful attesting the love and esteem held for the departed one by her family and numerous friends. To the bereaved husband, parents and other relatives the sympathy of all is extended. Relatives from a distance here for the funeral, were Dr. and Mrs. R. L. McLellan, of Eagle Lake; Mr. and Mrs. U. E. Fant, Miss Lizzie Mansfield, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Koch, Monroe King, Clarence Lee, and S. E. McLellan of Houston.

The death of H. P. Fant which occurred early Saturday morning after an illness of ten days, came as a great shock to his large circle of friends. Horace Patton Fant, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Ellison, of Limestone County, his father having preceded him to the Great Beyond sixteen years ago. Beside his immediate family there are several aunts, uncles and cousins.
