Mrs. Eatman, a sister of Mr. George Murphy, died at his home on the South Bay, last Tuesday morning and was laid to rest in the Palacios cemetery Thursday. Owing to the fact that Mr. Murphy was sick in a hospital, none of the family wee present except Geo. S. Murphy, a nephew, of Sherman.

Funeral services for Charles Henry Eddy were held at 10 a. m. Tuesday, February 14, at the Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. Van Dickens officiating, assisted by Rev. Jerry Lyons. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Henry Eddy, he was born May 30, 1886, in Stamp, Arkansas, and died February 12, 1961. A retired farmer, he had been a resident of this area for 25 years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary D. Eddy of Palacios; three daughters, Mrs. Laurine Neal of Levelland, Texas; Mrs. Virginia Sherrod of San Antonio and Mrs. Velma Red of Gillette, Wyoming; four sons, Cecil of Kingsville, Conway of Houston, Lonnie of Gillette, Wyoming and Earl of Palacios; one sister, Mrs. Jim Wells of Stamp, Ark.; 24 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Earl Lee Eddy, 68, of Palacios, were held Friday at the Palacios Funeral Home with burial at Memorial Oaks. Rev. Charles Collins officiating. Eddy was born Oct. 13, 1912 in Stamps, Ark. and died Aug. 25 at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston. He was a resident of Palacios for 45 years and was a retired tug boat engineer for Parker Bros. He had belonged to the Church of God of Prophecy and was a member of the Queen-Hamlin VFW Post 2479 and American Legion Post 649. He was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Rose Eddy of Palacios; daughter Mrs. Sue Weil of Alamont, Kansas; son, Dolan Dixon of Texas City; sisters Mrs. Lorrain Bell of Sugar Hill, Mrs. Velma Redd of Monument, Colo. and Mrs. Virginia Turner of Sour Lake; brothers, Cecil Eddy of Texarkana, Ark., Conway Eddy of Gillett, Wyo.; five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Dee Eddy were held at 2 p. m. Friday, April 7, at the Church of God of Prophecy with Rev. Van Dickens and Rev. Vanderver officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. Born December 15, 1890 in Wolf City, Texas, she had been a resident of Palacios since 1936, residing at 406 ½ Johnson. She died Tuesday, April 4, in Wagner General Hospital. She is survived by three daughters, Laurine Neal of Levelland, Texas, Velma Redd of Fort Morgan, Colorado and Virginia Turner of Corpus Christi; four sons, Earl Lee Eddy of Palacios; Cecil Ferris Eddy of Texarkana, Ark., F. Conway Eddy of Houston and Lonnie D. Eddy of Gillette, Wyoming; one brother, Lee Russel of Mount Pleasant, Texas; 26 grandchildren and 47 great grandchildren.

Joseph Obediah Edge, the fifth son of Dr. and Mrs. John Simpson Edge, was born on February 16, 1889 at Kurten, Texas. He passed away May 1 at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Houston. He was laid to rest May 2, at the Palacios Cemetery, following services at the First Baptist Church at 3 p. m. conducted by Rev. Rayford Harris assisted by Mr. Edge’s nephew, Victor Edge, who is pastor of the First Baptist Church at Cedar Lane. Pallbearers were Mr. and Mrs. Edge’s nephews: Charles Edge, Bryan, Texas; Alfred Edge, Corpus Christi; Gary Chamblee and Jerry Washington, Freeport; Guy Chamblee, Port Lavaca and Lowell Johnson, Palacios. Honorary pallbearers were Leon Arlla, Abel Pierce and Frank Stallard. He married Mrs. Rubye Pierce in 1936 and after his retirement from Air Service in 1945, they moved to her childhood home northeast of Palacios. They would have been married 30 years December 17th had he lived. He is survived by his wife, Rubye Edge; daughters, Mrs. Ruth Pierce and Mrs. Eileen Pelz of Marshall, Texas; one grandson, two granddaughters, and one great granddaughter; a brother, Paul W. Edge of Corpus Christi, also nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Cora L. Kruse Edwards, 53, were held April 29 at 3 p. m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. William Blanton officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery. Mrs. Edwards was born August 18, 1930 in Texas and died April 25, 1984 in Houston. Survivors include her husband, Louis G. Edwards of Houston, mother Sadie Kruse of Palacios, two daughters, Dianna Kinead of Spring and Beverly McGonigal of Bawlf, Canada; two sons, James Kidd of Katy and Thomas W. Kidd of Houston; four brothers, Frank Kruse of San Antonio, Clarence Kruse of Palacios, Weldon Kruse of West Columbia, and James Kruse of Palacios; and eight grandchildren.

Palacios—Damon Lee Edwards, 31, of Palacios, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004. He was born Nov. 9, 1972, in Palacios, to Michael and Beverly Sprayberry Edwards of Palacios. He was an operator for Inteplast and a Presbyterian. Survivors: sister, Dawn Edwards of Houston. Visitation will be 2 – 3 p. m. today at First Presbyterian Church in Palacios. Palacios Beacon, February 19, 2004 Body of Palacios Man Recovered From Bay The body of a 31-year-old Palacios man was recovered in Tres Palacios around Sunday after authorities believe he had fallen over board from a boat and drowned. The body of Damon Edwards of the 400 block of Perryman, was recovered by TPWD Game Wardens David Janssen and Jim Lovett. He was pronounced dead by Pct. 6 Justice of the Peace Knight at 12:35 p. m. Pending autopsy reports, the death is being considered an accidental drowning, according to Matagorda County Sheriff’s Dept. CID investigator Sgt. Bruce Page. Page said authorities were notified around 10:42 a. m. of a 17-18 foot boat drifting in the bay a relatively short distance from the Palacios Pavilion. Game Wardens were dispatched to the area to investigate and discovered the body floating in the water. Page said he was uncertain how far out in the bay the body was, or how near the drifting boat. According to information investigators had received, Edwards had taken the boat out to do some oystering. “It appears that he had fallen overboard and was unable to get back into the boat, “Page said Monday.

Funeral services for Louis Gene Edwards, 74, of Coalgate, OK, were held at 1 p. m. Tuesday, March 2, 2004 at the First Presbyterian Church in Palacios. Interment was at Palacios Cemetery. A former resident of Palacios, Mr. Edwards was born Sept. 4, 1929 to the late Will and Archie Jane Edwards. He died Feb. 25, 2004. At the age of 17, he joined the First Presbyterian Church of Coalgate, OK. He is survived by two daughters, Dianna Kidd Kinkead (husband Frank) of Katy, TX, and Beverly Kidd McGonigal (husband Kevin) of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; two sons, James Kidd (wife Kay) and Thomas Kidd, of Houston, TX; two brothers, Frank Edwards and Carl Edwards (wife Tommye); four sisters, Sarah Jane Seeley, Mary Purser (husband Glenn), Betty Marie Whltsie (husband Russell) and Patricia Poindexter (husband Colby); granddaughters, Jennifer Smaddis (husband Gregg), Erin McGonigal both of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and Elizabeth Swicegood (husband Kyle) of North Carolina; six grandsons, David Kinkead of Albuquerque, NM, Eric Kinkead, Austin, TX, Jeffrey and Sean McGonigal of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, James Kidd III and Thomas Kidd Jr. of Houston, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 25 years, Cora Kruse Kidd Edwards; and brothers, Jim, Bill, Hugh and John Edwards. Cypress Fairbanks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Graveside services for Egbert Elem Eggleston, 80, were held Aug. 2 at 2 p. m. at the Palacios Cemetery with Rev. Doug Blanton officiating. Eggleston was born July 22, 1904 in Atlanta, TX and died July 31, 1904 [1984] at his residence. He was a retired self employed retail merchant and had been a resident of the area since 1931. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Peggy Shearer of Victoria; two sisters, Verna Hodges of Oakwood, TX and Vera Oden of Baton Rouge, LA; and two grandchildren, Kelly Luksa and Zayne Luksa of Victoria.

Carl Rudolph Ehlers died in the Wagner General Hospital Sunday evening, April 15 after a prolonged illness. Funeral services were held in the Palacios Funeral Home Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock with the Rev. Clint Harris officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. A native Texan, he was born February 25, 1906 in Gonzales, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ben Ehlers, and for more than 40 years had been a resident of Palacios. Mr. Ehlers had been a car salesman for the Bay Chevrolet Company for many years, during World War II managed the Gulf Service Station and at the time of illness was working at the Bay Chevrolet Appliance. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Ehlers of Palacios, one daughter, Mrs. Carla Diane Edge of Utopia, Texas, and one sister, Mrs. Emily Boyd of Wharton.

Funeral services for Mildred Lena Martin Ehlers, 92, of Palacios, were held March 4, 1996 at the First United Methodist Church in Palacio with the Revs. Clifford C. Edge and Ross Taylor officiating. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery. Mrs. Ehlers was born May 19, 1903 in Nursery, Tx. to the late James Meredith and Mary Elizabeth Callaway Martin. She died Feb. 29, 1996 at Palacios Bay Nursing and Rehab Center. Moving to Palacios with her family in 1910, she was one of the first telephone operators in Palacios and later worked as operator in Bay City and San Antonio. She married Carl Rudolph Ehlers in 1926 and to this union was born one daughter, Carla Diane. In later years, she was receptionist for Friends of Elder Citizens and taught crafts at the Senior Center until shortly before her 90th birthday. Mrs. Ehlers was a member of the Palacios Library Board, Girl Scout Council and a charter member of the Athena Club and was a Sunday school teacher and served as Flower Chairperson for more than 25 years. She was chosen as an Outstanding Senior Citizen for the State of Texas in 1990 and was selected as Woman of the Year by the Palacios Chamber of Commerce in 1991. Mrs. Ehlers is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Carla and Clifford C. Edge, Jr. of Robstown, Tx.; five grandchildren Clifford Charles and wife Deborah Bowman Edge III, David Carl Edge, Craig Martin Edge, James Christian Edge and Cara Diane Edge; and three great-grandchildren, Chelsea Elaine Edge, Caitlin Emery Edge and Courtney Elder Edge. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Rudolph Ehlers; and five brothers and sisters: Ira Martin Haynes, Frances Martin Evans, James Meredith Martin, Leon Simpson Martin and Walter Harper Martin.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mina Ehlers, who passed away Sunday morning at the Bay View General Hospital, were held at the Palacios Funeral Home at 2:30 p. m. Monday, March 9. Rev. W. E. McCullom, pastor of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, officiated at the services. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery. The daughter of Rudolf and Verena Gloor, she was born August 4, 1873 in Aarau, Switzerland. When she was a month old her parents came to the United States settling in Shiner, Texas, where she grew to womanhood. In December 1898 she was married to Ben Ehlers and a few years later they moved to Gonzales where they made their home until moving to Palacios in 1919. Her husband preceded her in death in March, 1942. She is survived by one daughter, Emily Boyd of Wharton; one son, Carl Ehlers of Palacios; two grandchildren, Dr. Craig Boyd of Fort Worth and Carla Ehlers of Palacios; three great grandchildren, Scott, Michael and Cary Boyd; two sisters, Mrs. Emily Rische of Austin and Mrs. Pauline Schendel of Shiner.

Mrs. Josie Eitel, born June 2, 1868, died July 23, 1946, after an illness of several weeks. She is survived by one son, Claude Mackey, with whom she has made her home for many years. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Palacios Funeral Home conducted by Rev. J. W. Rives, pastor of the Baptist Church. Burial was made in Palacios Cemetery.

Services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Palacios Funeral Home for Mrs. T. S. Elliott, conducted by Rev. L. W. Crouch and burial made in the Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Elliott was born Fanny Orphelia Tackett in Johnson County on December 6, 1882, and died at her home west of Palacios Monday, November 12, 1945. In 1898 she married Mr. Elliott in Comanche County and in 1191 they moved south locating in the Olivia community, later moving to the Palacios area where they have since resided. In her girlhood she became a Christian and a member of the Baptist faith, but in later years joined with her husband in the Church of Christ. She was deeply interested in her church but because of her feeling of inability and humility, she seldom sought a place of leadership. She was the most humble of mothers, and was happy in serving others, especially sick and sorrowing. For some time she had been unable to attend Church services or to minister to others because of her own failing health. She is survived by her husband, two sons, Ben T. and Raymond Elliott, of Palacios, and two daughters, Mrs. S. R. Winfield, of Palacios and Mrs. H. W. Jones of Lenoir City, Tenn., also five grandchildren and one great –grandchild. Wherever she lived she made a host of friends and these also mourn her passing.

Funeral services for Jack R. Elliott, 57, were held July 17 at 2 p. m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Doug Blanton officiating. Private graveside services followed at the Palacios Cemetery. Elliott was born June 17, 1927 in Palacios and died July 15, 1984 at his residence in rural Palacios. The son of Benjamin Thomas and Susan Lou Leadford Elliott, he was a rancher. Elliott was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife, Jean Rothrock Elliott of Palacios; two sons, Bruce I. Elliott of Palacios and Craig W. Elliott of Victoria; one sister, Model Beall of Dickinson; and four grandchildren.

Josie Elliott, aged 19 years, died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Elliott, seven miles west of Palacios, early last Friday morning. Funeral services were held at the grave that afternoon, conducted by Eld. C. F. Conner and interment made in the Palacios Cemetery, under the direction of the Duffy-Rittenhouse Undertaking Co.; Besides her parents she is survived by three sisters and three brothers, and a number other relatives.

Funeral services for Susie Lou Elliott, 73, of Palacios, were held Oct. 25 at the Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. J. R. Gwin officiating. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery under the direction of Taylor Brothers Funeral Home. Mrs. Elliott died Oct. 24 in Wagner General Hospital. She was born in Deniro, Tex. and was a resident of Palacios for 60 years and a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Survivors include: daughter, Modelle Beall of Dickerson; son, Jack R. Elliott of Palacios; two sisters, Leona Bluhm of Three Rivers, and Velma Byers of Port O’Conner; brother, Walther Ledford of Palacios; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Arrangements were made with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Palacios.

Funeral services for Mrs. B. P. English, were held from the First Baptist Church Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. L. W. Crouch, pastor. Mrs. English died Wednesday, July 31, in a Houston hospital, aged 60 years. The remains were brought here by the Fogel-West Company Friday for the service and burial was made in the Palacios cemetery. For the past five years she had lived in Rosharon, prior to that Collegeport was her home for many years, and she is fondly remembered by a host of friends in that community, also in Palacios where her mother and sister resided until their deaths a few years ago. She is survived by the husband, B. P. English, four daughters, Mrs. E. A. McCune, of Rosharon, Miss Patricia English, Houston, Mrs. E. L. Epperson, Rosharon, Mrs. C. B. Pardoner, of Liverpool, one sister, Mrs. F. H. Sanders, Palacios, two brothers, Byron T. Moore, Houston, and R. B. Moore, Shreveport, La., and three grandchildren, Alan and Joe McCune, Rosharon and Charles Pardonner, of Liverpool.
