When the sudden call came from The Master Monday afternoon, Jesse Allen Derrick, so used to doing his Master’s bidding, slipped quietly away. For 46 years he had followed his Lord in the ministry. Brother Derrick was a name well known on the streets of Palacios, although it has been 23 years since he left the pastorate of the First Baptist church. Palacios was always his home and here he came for relaxation from his busy life. Jesse Allen Derrick was born March 3, 1885, in Alabama. At 21 he recognized a call to the ministry and entered Baylor Academy, then was graduated from Baylor University with the class of 1920. While there he lettered in football and took an active part in athletics as well as the religious organizations of the campus. His education was interrupted for a time while he saw active duty in France during the First World War, where he was a line officer with 345 Field Artillery. He also attended Southwestern Baptist Seminary. The following Baptist Churches had the privilege of having Brother Derrick as pastor: Eddy, Strawn, Italy, Palacios, Newgulf, Bastrop, Timpson, Cleveland and Premont. He was also for a time manager of the Palacios Baptist Encampment and later director of boys at the San Marcos Academy. While not holding active pastorates at these times, he continued in the ministry by preaching in rural areas and supplying for pastorless churches. He had only recently retired from the Academy and had planned to devote the rest of his life to that type work in this area. In 1935 Jesse Derrick brought his bride to Palacios to become pastor of The First Baptist Church. While here he launched a building program which was to result in remodeling the parsonage, auditorium, and the construction of two educational buildings. His program of enlistment has not been equaled. A Standard Sunday School and Training Union were set up as well as a unified budget with emphasis on tithing. But Brother Derrick’s activities did not stop with the church. His car was the ambulance of Palacios and no road was too difficult for his car when he was needed. One year he coached the football team, where he showed, by example, how clean living and moral standards build a strong body. He also helped to organize the ministerial alliance among the ministers of Palacios. Always he took an interest in civic affairs. For many years he was on the Board of Directors of the Texas Baptist Encampment, and each summer filled a house to capacity with young people from over the state during the regular sessions. Truly, his was a life dedicated to the scripture, “When ye have done it unto the least of these my brethren ye have done it unto me.” If it was helping with a cotton crop, building a house handling a shrimp net. Caring for the sick, or comforting the unhappy, Brother Derrick was always willing to do not just his part but more. His measure was always “pressed down and running over.” He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Loraine Derrick, a son, Lt. Jesse Allen Derrick, two brothers, and two sisters. Quietly he was laid to rest Wednesday afternoon where he longed to be surrounded by his many friends who hd gone on before him in Palacios Cemetery.

Nathan M. Dewees was born in Morgan county, Ohio, July 27, 1860, and died at his residence near Palacios on Thursday, February 3, 1921, about 7 o'clock P. M. He attended school in Chesterfield, Ohio, and later on went to the Electric Medical Institute of Cincinnati, Ohio, from which he was graduated in 1892. Dr. Dewees practiced his profession in Ohio until the summer of 1917, when he, with his good wife, came to Palacios, being attracted to this place by the ideal climate. He bought a beautiful home about three miles northeast of town, and has taken much pride and pleasure in its development, so that it is now one of the most desirable places in this region. Dr. Dewees was a good student of nature, and was unusually well informed along the line of botany and plant life, and was an excellent conversationalist on these kindred topics. He was highly respected as a man, and beloved as a neighbor, and his passing will be keenly felt among those who had the good fortune to know him, and the sympathy of all goes out to the widow and daughter in this hour of their affliction.
