Thelma Baxter Cardin

Thelma Baxter was born near Palacios January 29, 1898, graduated from the Victoria High School and the Massey Business College in Houston, was married to Mr. V. H. Cardin in Houston June, 1920, died in a Fort Worth hospital September 4, 1923, and was buried in the Palacios cemetery September 7, 1923.

The community was saddened Thursday when word was passed that the remains of Thelma Baxter Cardin was to be brought in on the afternoon train. A great number of the friends who had watched her grow from babyhood to lovely young womanhood and many others whose acquaintance was formed at a later date but whose love was none the less sincere, were at the station to aid in tenderly caring for the dear body and the sorrowing relatives. Thelma Baxter was born near Palacios January 29, 1898 and spent the greater part of her life here but finished high school in Victoria, living with her sister, Mrs. J. E. Anthony, at the time. Later she completed a course in Massey’s Business College in Houston and efficiently filled a position with the Goodyear people. In Houston she was wooed and won by Mr. V. H. Cardin, the marriage taking place in June, 1920. Quite recently this young couple moved to Fort Worth and were happy in their new home until the Grim Angel made his appearance and claimed the well loved young wife. The remains were brought to Palacios Thursday and services were held in the Methodist Church Friday forenoon—the church where she had so often worshipped and where she had publicly professed her love for her Lord and Savior. Here, over the body in its literally flower-covered casket, Rev. Mr. Hester uttered words of love and comfort for the relatives and friends and in the beautiful little cemetery concluded the services that gave her body to the keeping of Mother Earth. We question why one so young, so cherished, so full of life and love and ambition should be called, yet we know our God makes no mistakes—He doeth all things well.

There are left to mourn the departure of this young life the grief-stricken husband, Mr. H. V. Cardin; the sorrowing mother, Mrs. A. Nelson, and the brothers and sisters, Mr. Ross Baxter, Mrs. Stanley Baxter, Mrs. Alvin Dow, all of Houston, Mrs. J. E. Anthony and Miss Meta Baxter of Palacios.

F. L. Crawford Dies Suddenly of Heart Trouble

The community was shocked and saddened last Friday morning when it was learned that Mr. Fred L. Crawford had suddenly died Thursday night. Mr. Crawford had been suffering from heart trouble and a short while ago spent three weeks in a Houston hospital. He had been home for nearly a month and had returned to his work at the beginning of the week. Thursday he said he felt better than usual, but that night, almost without an instant’s warning, the poor tired heart ceased to function.

The funeral service was held at the home and at the cemetery Sunday afternoon, and was the largest ever witnessed in Palacios. It is estimate there were 400 cars in the procession. The services both by Dr. T. F. Driskill and Rev. H. A. Echols were comforting in the extreme and gave the vast audience brighter, better thoughts of death and of the life to come—the real life.

At the close of these services, ten white-robed, hooded men, the leader bearing a large cross made of flaming red flowers, silently and solemnly took their places around the casket and gave the beautifully impressive burial service of the Ku Klux Klan, which will be found in another column.

In Memory of Fred. L. Crawford

Fred L. Crawford died at his home in Palacios, April 5th, at 11 p. m. He was born in Bell county, Kentucky, March 22, 1868. He was a son of John James Crawford. When quite a young man he entered the service of his country, and when his comrades were called to the Spanish American war, he went with his command to Cuba and did his “bit” as a good soldier. At the end of four years’ service he was honorably discharged from the army.

He was married to Miss Annie Wiley on Nov. 21, 1897. Unto this union were born four children. Surviving him are his widow and four daughters, Mrs. A. G. Heinroth, Misses Effie, Berdine and Velma, also two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. P. E. Luke, of Beaumont, Mrs. J. S. Wiley, of this city, A. L. Crawford of Fanneth and J. M. Crawford, of Victoria.

Mr. Crawford had been an employee of the S. P. R. R. for the past fourteen years, in which position he proved himself faithful and efficient. He was liked by all his associates for his quiet and upright demeanor. He was true to his employees and his friends unite in saying he was a good man.

A service at the home and one at the grave were conducted by Dr. Driskill and Rev. Echols respectively. At the home the scripture lesson and the words of hope, consolation, and the spirit of brotherhood carried impressive lessons which brought cheer to the sorrowing loved ones who are left behind. At the cemetery, Brother Echols was full of the spirit of truth and his eulogy on the life of a good man will be long remembered. His thoughts on life, death and immortality held the great audience to the very heights of attention. At the close of Rev. Echols’ sermon, by previous arrangements, a number of men clad in the robes of the K. K. Klan came forward, surround the casket and rendered a beautiful and solemn burial ceremony.
