Funeral services for Adolph Tom Chanik, 70, were held July 7 at 2 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bob Zumalt officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery. Chanik, a resident of Palacios since 1934, was born July 12, 1912, in Goliad and died July 5 at Wagner General Hospital. He was the son of William and Rose Chanik and a member of the Church of the Nazarene. Survivors include his wife, Annie L. Chanik of Palacios; seven daughters, Mittie Glass of Houston, Lillie McElroy of Ingleside, Joyce Cowger of Markham, Geneva Smith of Blessing, Olita Nance of Bay City, Martha Grantland of Port Lavaca and Kay Dry of Aransas Pass; two sons, Tommie J. Chanik of Palacios and Forrest Chanik of Canyon Lake; two sisters, Annie Krausec of Austin and Cecelia Reese of Malvernon, Arkansas; one brother, Frank Chanik of Ganado; 28 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Annie Lee Chanik, 81, of Palacios will he held 1 p. m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at the Palacios Cemetery with Rev. Gary Pettigrew officiating. Burial will follow at Palacios Cemetery. Born May 12, 1916 in Taylor, Texas, to Edwards and Mittie Tucker Knapp, Chanik passed away Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Palacios Healthcare Center. Chanik was a member of the Nazarene Church and had been a resident of Palacios for 65 years. She is survived by six daughters, Mittie Lee Glass of Houston, Lillie Ann McElroy of Aransas Pass, Joyce Cowger of Markham, Olita Nance of Smithville, Martha Rodgers of Palacios, and Kay Dry of Georgetown; by two sons, Tommy Joe Chanik of Palacios and Forrest Chanik of Markham; by three sisters, Mary Rooks, Claudell Covey and Ardell Ryman, all of Bay City; by one brother, E. J. Knapp of Edna; by 32 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, A. T. Chanik of July 5, 1982; and by two daughters, Geneva Smith on May 25, 1988 and Ruthie Chanik on Feb. 11, 1943. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Palacios.

Funeral services for Mrs. Grace Harper Chanik were held at 9 a. m. Sunday, January 1, at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Leslie E. Webb officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. Born December 9, 1902 in Buffalo Gap, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Davis Gee and Mattie Mae Scott Gee. A resident of Palacios for 20 years, she died December 29 in Wagner General Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Joseph William Chanik of Palacios; one son, Earle A. Williams, Jr. of Gretna, La.; four sisters, Alice Head of New Mexico, Ima Penn of Montgomery, Texas, Jessie Bloomhuff of Florida; Dolly Jones of Utah; two brothers, Luther M. Gee of Houston and Roy L. Gee of Arlington, Texas; three grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services for Agapito Chavez, 74 of Palacios are set for 4 p. m. Wednesday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Palacios with the Rev. Casey Jarzombek officiating. Mr. Chavez was born Aug. 18, 1918 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico to Apdonio and Marie Simons Salas Chavez and died April 5, 1993 at Matagorda General Hospital. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2467, both in Palacios. Mr. Chavez was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Ramona Chavez of Palacios; seven daughters, Linda Dyer of Bay City, Mary Chavez of Houston, Gloria Chavez of Bay City, Maria Mallete of Blessing, Rose Nies of Knoxville, Tenn., Margarita Katzer of Palacios and Melissa Chavez of Palacios; six sons, Angel Chavez of El Maton and Raymond Chavez, Richard Chavez, Tony Chavez, Henry Chavez and Steven Chavez, all of Palacios; two sisters, Cande Reyes and Nieves Chavez, both of San Maria; and six grandchildren, Joyce Chavez, Tanesha Chavez, Cody Mallette, Robbie and Renae Nies and Troy Katzer Jr. Mr. Chavez was preceded in death by one son, Agapito Chavez Jr., in 1979. Chavez, Jr. of Tres Palacios Oaks, who was killed in a car accident Monday, Sept. 10, were held Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 10 a. m. in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Father Joe Shannon officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. Son of Agapito Chavez, Sr. and Ramona Puentes Chavez, he was born January 6, 1960 in Palacios. A 1978 graduate of Tidehaven High School, he was employed as a rice field laborer. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Agapito Chavez, Sr. of El Maton; six brothers, Angel, Raymond, Richard, Antonio, Henry and Stephen, all of El Maton; seven sisters, Linda and Mary Jo Chavez of Houston, Gloria, Maria, Rose Marie, Margarita and Melissa Chavez, all of El Maton.

Graveside services were held Monday for infant Antonio Chavez, newborn son of Mr. and Mrs. Roben Chavez of Palacios. The infant died Aug. 3 in Palacios. Services were officiated over by Father Brian Crookes. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery.

Funeral services for Chano Chavez will be held at 8:45 a. m. Thursday, Sept. 29 from Rendon Chapel and at 9 a. m. from St. Anthony’s Catholic Church where requiem mass will be said by Rev. Michael Harrold. Interment will be in the Palacios Cemetery. Rosary was recited at 8 p. m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Rendon Funeral Home Chapel. A resident of Palacios for 32 years he was born in Victoria on April 10, 1917. He died Monday at 1:45 p. m. in Wagner General Hospital following a long illness. Survivors include four brothers, Eusebio of Corpus Christi; Valentine, Mike and Gabriel; two sisters, Mrs. Monica C. Gatica and Mrs. Reyes Tristan, all of Palacios.

Funeral services for Desiderio Chavez were held at 3 p. m. Monday, March 27 at the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. B G. Vera, of the Second Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. Born February 11, 1909 in Rockport, Texas, a son of Concepcion Gatica and Rafail Chavez, he was a veteran of World War II and had been a resident of Palacios for the past two years. He died Saturday, March 25 at his home. He is survived by his wife, Clara, of Palacios; son, Desiderio Jr. of Houston; sister, Mary Samora of Palacios and brother, Palacido Chavez of Newgulf.

Requiem Mass for Fortino Chavez, 57, who died Friday morning in a Galveston hospital following a lingering illness, was celebrated at 10 a. m. Monday in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Father Patrick O’Farrell officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. Mr. Chavez resided in Victoria for 25 years before moving to Palacios in 1942. He was born in 1905 in Mexico. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Carmen Gatica and Mrs. Reyes Tristan of Palacios; and five brothers, Gabrial, Mike, Chavio Chavez of Palacios and Eusibio and Valentine Chavez of Corpus Christi.

Funeral services were held at 10 a. m. Monday, Dec. 28 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church for Gloria Marie Chavez, 910 Welch, with Rev. Patrick O’Farrell conducting the last rites. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Chavez, she was born February 8, 1959 and died in the Bayview General Hospital Saturday, Dec. 26. Besides her parents she is survived by three sisters, Angelena, Delorea and Letisia.

Funeral services for Mrs. Grabiela Chavez where held at 8:45 a. m. Thursday from the family residence in Palacios and from St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Burial was in Palacios Cemetery. Mrs. Chavez died in her home Tuesday afternoon following a short illness. She was born on March 18, 1887 in Mexico and had resided in Palacios for the past 16 years, moving here from Victoria. Survivors include six sons, Fortunato, Chano, Mike and Grabiela of Palacios; Eusebio and Balentine of Corpus Christi; two daughters, Mrs. Carmen Gatica and Mrs. Victorio Gatica of Palacios and 29 grandchildren.

Miguel Chavez, 67, of Baytown died July 3, 1991 in San Jacinto Hospital in Baytown. He was born September 29, 1923 in Victoria to Pablo Chavez and Gravilla Hernandez. Mr. Chavez was a former resident of Palacios, resident of Baytown for 11 years and served in the U. S. Army in World War II. He is survived by one sister, Victoria Gatica of Palacios, brothers, Valentine Chavez and Gabriel Chavez, both of LaPorte and numerous nieces and nephews. Services were held at St. Anthony’s Church in Palacios, July 5. Pallbearers were Paul D. Chavez, Marcus Gatica, Victor Chavez, Robert Chavez, Sr., Gabriel Lopez and Domingo Lopez, Jr.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth (Molly) Chiles will be held Wednesday, August 16, at 2 p. m. at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Leon Maxwell and the Rev. James Abernathey officiating. Interment will be in the Palacios Cemetery. Born November 19, 1890 in Fayetteville, Texas, she was the daughter of the late John Frank and Minnie Elizabeth Walker Drenner. A resident of Palacios for 36 years, she was an active member of the First Baptist Church, Tres Palacios Garden Club, Wagner General Hospital Auxiliary and Matagorda County Historical Association as long as her health permitted. She passed away Monday, August 14, in Bay City, where she had lived at the Matagorda House the past few years. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Minnie Elizabeth Tinsley of Rock Hill, S. C. and Mrs. Bobbie Mildred Feather of Jackson, Michigan; four sons, Fleming N. Chiles of Odessa, Leslie Lee Chiles of Brazoria, Emmett I. Chiles, Jr. of Palacios and George A. (Sonny) Chiles of Sugarland; one sister, Mrs. Edna Mae Evans of Castroville; two brothers, G. L. Drenner of Rosenberg and T. R. Drenner of Wharton, 17 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

She was born in New Iberia, Louisiana and had been a resident of Houston for 2 ˝ years. Survivors include one daughter, Tommie Wannamaker, Houston; one sister, Beatrice Outlaw, Houston; one brother, Adam L. Price, Palacios; and four grandchildren.

Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. Rosary was recited at 8 p. m. Thursday at the Palacios Funeral Home. Mr. Claiborne, son of T. B. and Elizabeth Lawrence Claiborne, was born March 15, 1915, in Dustin, Oklahoma. He died Tuesday afternoon, November 19, in Wagner General Hospital after an illness of two months. A resident of Palacios the past 15 years, he was employed as a pumper at the Sun Oil Company re-cycling plant, north of Blessing. Surviving are his wife, Ethel of Palacios, his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Claiborne of Dustin, Okla., two daughters, Suellen and Tommie Lynn of Palacios, eight brothers, Henry of Walter, Okla., Allen of Lindsey, Okla., Joe of Dustin, Roy of Tulsa, Edgar of Bartlesville, Okla., Ralph of Casper, Wyoming, Howard of Okmulgee, Okla. and Pope of San Antonio.

Funeral services for B. B. “Doc” Clary were held July 19, 1991 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Stacy Houser officiating. Interment followed at the Palacios Cemetery. Mr. Clardy was born March 15, 1913 in Karnes County, Texas to Walter B. Clardy and Sally Lynch. He died July 17, 1991 in Wagner General Hospital in Palacios. He was a lifelong resident of Palacios and a Methodist. He is survived by one brother, W. P. Clardy of Palacios; niece, Florence Falks of Angleton and cousin, Mittis Bowers of Palacios. Pallbearers were Keith Falks, Dwayne Falks, Richard Sanders, Vernon Wright, Bernard Jensen, Abel Pierce, Royce Harvey and Louis Hickl.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the First Baptist Church for Dennis McKinley Clardy, 56, with the Rev. Rayford B. Harris and Rev. W. P. Carmichael conducting the services. Clardy, a retired farmer, passed away at Bay View Hospital at 8 p. m. on January 11. He had lived in the Palacios area for 32 years and was a Methodist by faith. He was born June 21, 1897 in Alabama. Included among his survivors are his wife, Mrs. Pearl Clardy of Palacios; father, J. B. Clardy, Alabama; daughters, Mrs. Mittis Bowers, Palacios and Mrs. Bernice Jones, Frankleton, Louisiana; sisters, Mrs. J. A. Shockley, Mrs. Ralph Denny, Mrs. Grady Allen, Mrs. Almond Lyles, Mrs. Oscar Pair and Mrs. Gordon Noel, all of Alabama; brothers, T. B. Clardy and Bill Clardy, also of Alabama and W. B. Clardy of Palacios.
