The death of “Billie” Boyett, which occurred early Thursday morning, after an illness of several days came as a great shock to his relatives and friends. William Clarence Boyett, son of W. N. Boyett, was born in Palacios, Texas, October 14, 1921. In 1923 he moved with his parents to McAllen, Texas, where they lived for a short time, after which they moved to Donna, Texas, where he lived until the death of his mother in 1927. For the past three years he has made his home in Palacios. He attended East Bay school, being in the third grade. He was well liked by his teachers and little school mates. He had a lovable disposition and was a good boy at all times. He will be greatly missed by his little friends at school, and there is a vacant place in the home that can never be filled. He leaves to mourn his death his father, a little sister, a grandfather, a number of aunts and uncles and other relatives. The funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 3:30 at the Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. R. Paine. Interment was made in the Palacios cemetery.

Little William Henry Brandon, the seven year old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Brandon, died Saturday afternoon after suffering excruciating pain for several months. The tired little body was placed to rest in the Palacios cemetery Sunday afternoon, the Rev. Mr. Echols conducting the services. Little William Henry leaves to mourn his loss, his father, mother, six sisters and other relatives, who have the sympathy of the community.

Funeral services for Mrs. Coleen Breaux, 41, were held at 2:30 p. m. Sunday, May 17, at Pilgrim Rose Baptist Church with the Rev. J. B. Allen officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. She passed away Thursday at Wagner General Hospital. Survivors include her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Batt Hebert; two daughters, Mary Delores and Leigh Ann; two sons, Hubert, Jr. and Willis James all of Palacios; four brothers Rev. Lee Roy Hebert, Sidney Hebert, Leon Hebert of Houston and Rev. Harold Hebert of Palacios; four sisters, Mrs. Viola Hebert and Mrs. Mildred Wilson of Houston; Mrs. Mary Elroy and Mrs. Beatrice Haynes of Palacios.

Faciendo Briseno, a highly respected Mexican citizen and an employee of the city for a number of years, died Tuesday afternoon. He had been ill for some time and spent several weeks in the hospital in Galveston early in the summer. Funeral services were held today with the Palacios Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. Trinidad Briseno, 88, died Friday morning at 8 a. m. in Wagner General Hospital, following a long illness. A funeral mass was said at 9 a. m. Saturday, July 29, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Armand Florizoone officiating. Rosary was recited at 8 p. m. Saturday at Rendon Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services were held at 3 p. m. Sunday at the funeral home chapel followed by interment in the Palacios Cemetery. Mrs. Briseno, a resident of Palacios for 40 years, was born in Aransas County, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Agapito Camancho. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Rosenda Ybarra of Bay City, Mrs. Savina Rodriguez, Mrs. Epifania Morales and Mrs. Clara Cruz, all of Palacios; 27 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Charlsie Brister were held at 1 p. m. Monday, December 19, at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. Daughter of the late Jim and Emil Phelps Marshall, she was born April 10, 1890 in San Augustine, Texas. A former resident of Palacios she had lived in Orange the past three years and passed away there Saturday, December 17. She is survived by nine daughters, Leva Moses of Burnet, Maggie Drawhorn of Zavalla, Eva Norwood of Orange, Elaine Melling of Groves, Johnnie Mae Hamlin of Florence, Dorothy Hamlin of Sweeny, Jean LeClair of Pearland, Emily Harvey and Melba McCrory of Palacios; five sons, Willie Brister of Houston, Aaron Brister of Zavalla, Elton Brister of Port Lavaca, L. J. and Marshall Brister of Palacios; one brother, Connie Marshall of Silsbee; thirty-six grandchildren, fifty-seven great grandchildren and eight great great grandchild.

Funeral services for Henry James Brister were held at the Palacios Funeral Home, Tuesday, September 10 at 2 p. m. with Rev. Rayford Harris officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. A resident of Palacios for 35 years, he was born July 18, 1884 in Dry Prong, La., a son of the late William and Sarah Frances Orr Brister. For many years Mr. Brister farmed northeast of Palacios after he retired he moved into town and lived at 607 4th until his death at Wagner General Hospital Monday morning, September 9, where he had been taken earlier that day. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Charlice Brister of Palacios; nine daughters, Mrs. Leva Mases, Angleton; Mrs. Maggie Drawhorn, Port Neches, Mrs. Eva Norwood, Orange; Mrs. Elaine Melling, Groves; Mrs. Dorothy Hamlin, Sweeny, Mrs. Jean LeClair, Pearland; Mrs. Emily Cook, Mrs. Johnnie Mae Hamlin and Mrs. Melba McCrory of Palacios; five sons, Willie, Houston; Aaron, Port Neches; Elton and Marshall, Palacios; L. J. Brister, Bergstrom Air Force Base, Austin; two sisters, Mrs. Allie Simmons, Kountz and Mrs. Mae Marshall, San Augustine; a half-brother, Thomas Brister; 35 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Marshall I. Brister, 71, of Palacios, were held Dec. 1994 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hollas Hoffman officiating. Burial was in Palacios Cemetery. Mr. Brister was born May 23, 1923 in Davis, Okla. to Henry James and Charlsie Marshall Brister. He died Dec. 16, 1994. A resident of Palacios since 1928, Mr. Brister was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and a lifelong member of Palacios V. F. W. Post 2467 and First Baptist Church. He is survived by sisters Leva Moses of Burnett, Maggie Drawhorn of Zavalla, Emily Harvey and Melba McCrory, both of Palacios, Elaine Melling of Groves, Dorothy Fay Hamlin of Sweeny, and Charlsie Jean Leclaire of Pearland; and brothers James Aaron Brister, Henry Elton Brister and L. J. Brister, all of Palacios, and Willie Hickman Brister of Zavalla. Pallbearers were Darrell Gibson, Hardy Christmas, Curtis Bagwell, Jerry Hamlin, D. W. Moses and James Moses.

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Sarah Frances Brister Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock in the Palacios Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. L. W. Crouch, assisted by Rev. Rayford B. Harris and burial made in the Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Brister was born in Louisiana, August 14, 1885, and died Sept. 26, 1948, having reached the age of 93 years. She came to Texas 39 years ago and has made her home here ever since with her son, H. J. Brister. In early life she became a member of the Baptist Church in which faith she lived a consistent Christian life, meeting hardships, disappointments and sacrifice bravely as a follower of the Master and His teachings. For several years she had been in failing health and for some months confined to her home. Besides the one son, H. J. Brister, two daughters survive, Mrs. S. S. Marshall, of San Augustine and Mrs. Simons of Kountz. Other survivors are 28 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Salt Dome Production Company was preparing to send out a boat at about 9 o’clock this morning to investigate the latest lead in the search for two fishermen missing from a trip to Coon Island since Sunday afternoon. Missing are C. D. “Mutt” Britton, 34, an employee of Salt Dome, and his uncle, Walter Chandler, 42, district sales manager for a vacuum cleaner firm of Houston, who lives in Bay City. They left here Sunday at 5 p. m. for a floundering expedition to Coon Island and have not been seen since. Allen D. Quinn, skipper of a Matagorda Shell Company tow boat, reported that his propellers had stirred up some debris near Beacon 2 as he was coming into Palacios Wednesday night. Salt Dome planned to send out a boat to investigate as soon as Mr. Quinn could be contacted to give the location in which the debris was spotted. Palacios Civil Air Patrol squadron began the air search for the missing pair at about 10 a. m. Monday. Some 35 flights, totaling 30 flying hours, had been made through Wednesday afternoon and are continuing today. Edward L. Woods, Coast Guardsman stationed here, spotted the first wreckage at about 11:30 Monday morning on the beach at Coon Island. Recovered so far are the oars to the two men’s 14-foot aluminum boat, a boat seat, a rubber boot, a quart bottle of gasoline, an Army type overcoat, a felt hat, and a jacket with Mr. Britton’s name in it. Most of the articles have been definitely identified as belonging to the missing men. All but one of them were found the first day of the search; only the jacket was found Tuesday and nothing was turned up Wednesday. In addition to flying some 25 search flights, the local CAP squadron sent a land party of cadets to search the beach near Coon Island and vicinity Monday afternoon. Fred Markwardt of Salt Dome flew some half dozen or more missions, Bay City CAP Squadron made two and the 5th Air Rescue Service’s twin-engined amphibian from Ellington AFB made one flight over Matagorda Bay Tuesday morning. Lt. Robert Oldewage of the 5th ARS is still in Palacios to direct the search, but the amphibian left Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Dorothy Britton and Mrs. Alice Chandler, the wives of the missing men, said their husbands had made frequent trips to Coon Island to fish and were familiar with the bay area. Both are still holding out hope that the two men will be found alive. Mr. and Mrs. Britton have three children, Brenda Kay, 10, Judy Diane, 4, and Douglas Arthur, 2. CAP planes are continuing the search today. The search has been authorized by Air Rescue Service since Monday morning. Palacios Beacon, March 27, 1952 Joint Services Held For Drowning Victims Saturday Afternoon Funeral services for C. D. “Mutt” Britton, 34, of Palacios and Walter Chandler, 42, of Bay City were held Saturday afternoon at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City. Bodies of the pair, victims of drowning in Tres Palacios Bay Sunday, March 23, were found last Friday morning. They had been missing for five days after leaving for a floundering expedition to Coon Island, five and a half miles south of here. J. E. Atkins, captain of the “Charles S. Payson,” located Mr. Britton’s body at about 9:30 Friday morning near an oil well two miles south of Palacios. The body of Mr. Chandler was discovered a short while later by Clyde S. Allen near the west tip of Coon Island, about two miles from the spot where Mr. Britton’s body was found. Extensive land, sea and air searching began for the missing pair when they were reported still missing Monday morning. Debris from the 14-foot aluminum boat they were using and some of their clothing were found Monday and Tuesday by searchers. The boat, however, was not located. Justice of the Peace John F. Ward of Bay City conducted the inquest and returned a verdict of accidentally death by drowning. There were no marks of violence on the bodies, he said. Survivors of Mr. Britton are his widow, Mrs. Dorothy Britton; two daughters, Brenda Kay, 10, and Judy Diane, 4; and a son, Douglas Arthur, 2; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles D. Britton of Alvin; two brothers, Ralph Britton of Giddings and Charles D. Britton of Alvin; and two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Webernick of Ganado and Miss Gloria Ann Britton of Alvin. Mr. Britton was an employee of Salt Dome Production Company. Surviving Mr. Chandler are his widow, Mrs. Alice Chandler, and two children, Walter 3, and Jeannette Clemmie, 2. The body of Mr. Britton was buried in Palacios and Mr. Chandler was interred in Bay City.

Funeral services for Mrs. Dorothy Britton of Houston were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Thursday, November 11, at 10 a. m. with the Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating. Interment was in the Palacios cemetery. Daughter of John H. and Hilda Schoon Webernick, was born April 10, 1919 in Brenham and passed away in a Houston hospital on November 9, 1971. She was the widow of Clarence D. Britton who drowned here in 1952. Survivors include her father, John H. Webernick of Edna, two daughters, Mrs. Raymond Fox of Houston and Mrs. Bill Burns of Angleton; one son, Douglas Britton of Houston; three sisters, Johnnie Mae____reer of Harlingen, Helen Strelic of Houston, and Earline Hoskins of Lolita; five brothers, Dan of New Jersey, Arthur of Pasadena, Ray of Ganado, Earl and W. H. of Edna and three grandchildren.

A fire, which is believed to have started in the kitchen, claimed the lives of three Palacios residents last Tuesday. The three died as a result of smoke inhalation as a result of the thick smoke and searing heat which filled the home at 400 Perryman. Pronounced dead at the scene by Pct. 3 Justice of the Peace Jack Dooley were Fay Brock, 49; his wife Betty, 32; and Anthony Norton, 12, a relative of Mrs. Brock. Norton was the son of Alice Faye Norton of Palacios. The fire was reported to the Palacios Police Department and Palacios Volunteer Fire Department at 11:48 p. m. Tuesday, Nov. 16. Firemen arrived at the scene within minutes. Searing heat and thick smoke filled the house, however, firemen were able to extinguish the relatively small blaze quickly. Brock’s body was found lying in a hallway leading to the kitchen. The bodies of Mrs. Brock and Norton were discovered by firemen in their bedrooms. According to Assistant Fire Chief Sammy Davidson, the fire apparently started on the electric range in the kitchen. The bodies of Mrs. Brock and Norton were discovered by firemen in their bedrooms. David said that an aluminum pot containing grease had been place on a large burner and that the burner had been turned on high. Davidson said that Brock had apparently fallen asleep and during that time, the burner generated enough heat to ignite the grease. He speculated that Brock woke up when the fire started, but was overcome by smoke before he could reach the kitchen. “It (the fire) generated a tremendous amount of heat. The pot was still on the range after the fire and you could see where the burners had burned themselves into the bottom of the pot,” Davidson said. He added that a bag of french fries was found on the kitchen counter. The range was still on after firemen had extinguished the blaze. The house itself sustained only superficial damage. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery. Mrs. Brock was born April 4, 1950 in Laura Hill, N. C. and died at her residence at 400 Perryman Nov. 16. She was the daughter of James Arthur and Eva Mae Norton Knight. She had been a resident of Palacios since 1977. Survivors include two sons, Franklin Johnson of Cannapolis, N. C. and Joey Johnson of Cannapolis; three sisters, Mary Elizabeth English of Laurinburg, N. C., Kathryn Lynn Ruiz of Laura [Laurel] Hill, N. C. and Juanita K. Carpenter of Palacios; and two brothers, James Arthur Knight of Laurinburg, N. C. and David Anthony Carpenter, Jr. of Bridgeport.

Funeral services for Garland Traylor Brooking, 84, of Palacios were held Oct. 26 at the Palacios Cemetery with the Rev. J. R. Gwin officiating. Arrangements were made with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Palacios. Mr. Brooking died Oct. 24 in Wagner General Hospital. He was born in Jackson County and was a 60-year resident of Matagorda County where he was active as a rancher, land developer and philanthropist. He is survived by his wife, Mable Hayes Brooking of Palacios.

Graveside services for Mabel Grace Brooking, 93, were held Nov. 24 at 1 p. m. at the Palacios Cemetery with Rev. Ronnie Floyd and Rev. J. R. Gwin officiating. Mrs. Brooking was the daughter of Alfonso A. Hayes and Margaret Bullock and was born June 2, 1889 in Missouri. She died Nov. 23, 1982 in Wagner General Hospital. She had been a resident of Palacios since 1910. Mrs. Brooking was preceded in death by her husband, G T. Brooking, in 1980. Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews.

Millard Traylor Brooking, 61, bank president, city treasurer, rancher, died in the Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City, Tuesday morning. The funeral was held at 2:30 p. m. Wednesday, December 17 in the First Methodist Church with Rev Clinton Harris officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. Mr. Brooking was born in Jackson County on August 20, 1897, the son of James and Josephine Traylor Brooking. He entered the banking business in 1926 in Hitchcock, moving from there to Palacios in 1940. He was instrumental in organizing the City State Bank of Palacios of which he has served as president for the past ten years. He is survived by his wife, Minnie Brooking; two sons, Garland M. of Hazelhurst, Miss., and Millard M. Brooking of Palacios, one brother, G. T. Brooking of Palacios, and eight grandchildren. Funeral services for Minnie Blanche Brooking, 93, of Palacios, were held June 7, 1977 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Colleen Claybourn officiating. Interment was at Palacios Cemetery. Mrs. Brooking was born March 20, 1904 in Edna, Texas, to Isaac M. and Ida Ralston Linville. She died June 4, 1997 at Palacios Healthcare Center. Before dial telephones, Minnie worked as a phone operator in Palacios, Markham and Goose Creek. During WWII she served in the Women's Army Corps. After the war, she worked in Palacios at Muriel's Dress Shoppe and Brandon's Dry Goods. She lived in Victoria from 1969 until November 1994. Mrs. Booking is survived by a sister, Beulah Linville Abbe of Friendswood; five nieces, Laura Bachus, Shirley Linville, Laverne Justice, Joy Cook and Jean Stephens; eight nephews, John E. Frankson, Donald Linville, Dale Linville, Jack Linville, Ronny Linville, Marion L. Abbe, Beck Steiner and Leon Steiner. Pallbearers were Howard Spies, Marion L. Abbe, John E. Mrs. Anna S. Brotemarkle, 90, of Palacios died April 5, 1981 in Wagner General Hospital. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Palacios where she was a resident since 1924. Survivors include: daughter, Mrs. Ellen S. Shelton of Palacios; son, Norman Brotemarkle of Palacios; 3 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. A grinding station wagon-car collision at the intersection of Fifth and Henderson (Highway 35) shortly after 1:00 o’clock Sunday afternoon claimed the life of Gary Lee Brotemarkle, 21-year-old son of Mary Lee and Norman Brotemarkle. According to the Chief of Police Ray Markowsky, the ’69 Ford Station Wagon Gary was driving west on Henderson made a left turn on Fifth and was his broadside by a ’69 Fort driven by Charles Thomas Horn of Houston. Young Brotemarkle was killed instantly. George A. Rohrer, a passenger in the Horn car, received a few scratches. He was treated at Wagner General Hospital then released. A native of Palacios, Gary was born June 25, 1949. He attended Palacios schools, graduating with the class of 1967, and would have been a senior this fall at Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos. Funeral services were held at 5 o’clock Monday afternoon, August 24, at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Leslie E. Webb officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. He is survived by his parents, his sister, Mrs. Sue Stacy of San Antonio and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Anna Brotemarkle of Palacios.

Funeral services for Mary Lee Brotemarkle, 84, of Palacios, were held July 31, 1998 at the First Presbyterian Church of Palacios with Reverends Andy and Janel Blair and Rev. Doug Blanton officiating. Interment will follow at the Palacios Cemetery. Mrs. Brotemarkle was born Nov. 20, 1913 in Greenville to the late Albert and Margaret Flenniken Bull. She died July 28, 1998 at The Legacy in Bay City. A resident of Palacios since 1938, Mrs. Brotemarkle was a very active member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served in various positions and was a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was also active in community affairs. At one time she taught typing and short-hand at Palacios High School. She is survived by her husband, N. I. Brotemarkle of Palacios; daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Bill Stacy, of San Antonio; and two granddaughters, Sarah Sue Stacy of Dallas and Janet Lee Wenzel and husband Jason of Austin. She was preceded in death by her son Gary Brotemarkle; two sisters, Billie Inglish and Louise Tanner; and by a brother, Chester Bull. Pallbearers were Bruce Herlin, Paul Goforth, Roger Keeling, Royce Harvey, James Milam, and Bob McKinney.
