Funeral Services Held Thursday For Mrs. William E. Barber, 70

Funeral services for Mrs. Maude Margaret Barber were held at the Palacios Funeral Home at 3 p. m. Thursday with Rev. Jesse Legg officiating. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Barber, who was born March 10, 1890, died Wednesday, Oct. 6 in the Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City. She had been a resident of Palacios for 18 years.

Survivors include her husband, William E. Barber; daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Jenkins, Mrs. Lillian Brumbelow and Mrs. Dorotha Mosier, of Palacios, and Mrs. Emaline Reed, Van Vleck; son, Elmer K. Rose, Chandler, Arizona; three stepsons, Shelby Barber, Austin; Sherwood Barber, Palacios, and Harold Barber, Louisiana; a brother, J. S. Watson, 22 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Sherwood D. Barber

Palacios—Sherwood Daniel “Dan” Barber, 79, of Palacios, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999.

He was born Aug. 4, 1919, in Viena, to the late William Elijah and Lilly Whitey Barber. He served in the Signal Corps in the South Pacific during World War II. He was employed by GTE for 38 years and serves with the Palacios Volunteer Fire Department for 37 years and was chief for 20 years. He also served as Civil Defense coordinator, EMS coordinator and Lions Club president and was a member of VFW Port No. 4403.

Survivors: wife, Della Hartl Barber; daughters, Norma Bradley of Duncanville and Linda Park of Mesquite; stepdaughter, Joyce Ruddick of Port Lavaca; son, Danny Barber of Aspen, Colo.; brother, Harold Barber of Corpus Christi; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: first wife, Laverne Hamlin Barber; and brother, Shelby Barber.

Family visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p. m. today at Palacios Funeral home chapel.

Services will be 2 p. m. Friday at the funeral home, the Rev. Charlie Parking officiating.

Burial will be at Palacios Cemetery in Palacios.

Delton F. Barker

Funeral services for Delton F. Barker, 69, of Tidewater Oaks were held May 27, 1992 at Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James Nickell officiating. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery.

Mr. Barker was born Oct. 8, 1922 in Rufe, Okla. to James E. and Fannie Tollett Barker. He died May 22, 1992 at his residence.

He is survived by three daughters, Janice Jones and Kay Beeson, both of Houston, and Denise Whitlee of Rey, Tex.; two sons, Thomas and Richard Barker, both of Palacios; four sisters, Pauline, JoAnn, Irene and Ruth; one brother, Pete; and 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Kelly Barker, Steve Barker, Jason Barker, Shane Barker, Todd Barker and Paul Barker.

Eugene Jefferson Barnes

Funeral services for Eugene Jefferson Barnes, 75, of Palacios were held Tuesday, Nov 19 at 11 a. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. W. S “Doug” Blanton. Interment followed at the Palacios Cemetery.

Barnes was born April 20, 1917 in Brewton, Alabama to Jeff and Bessie McCurdy Barnes. He died Nov. 8, 1992. He was affiliated with the Baptist Church and was a resident of Palacios for 45 years.

He is survived by wife, Alean Barnes of Palacios; two daughters and sons-in-law; Dorothy and Marion Logan of Simms, Alabama and Gloria and James Merritt of Grand Bay, Alabama; three sisters: Lucille Cox of Loxley, Alabama, Willie Mae Powell and Boncille Whitacker, both of Irvington, Alabama; two brothers, Curtis Barnes of Grand Bay and Cecil Barnes of Irvington and four grandchildren: John, Allison, Kenny and granddaughter-in-law, Dana of Simms and Darrell Bosarge of Grand Bay.

Pallbearers were Gene Allen, Rudy Mosier, Lowell Johnson, Leo Orsak, Charles White and John Baker.

Final Rites Held Here Monday For George P. Barnett

George P. Barnett Sr., 76, well known Matagorda County farmer and well digger and a resident of Palacios for many years, died Friday morning in a Houston hospital.

Services were held at 3 p. m. Monday in the Palacios Funeral Home with W. H. Nichols, Church of Christ minister of Columbus, Texas, in charge. Interment was in the Palacios cemetery.

Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Stella Barnett; one daughter, Mrs. John McGrail of Houston; two sons, Guy H. Barnett of Columbus and George P. Barnett Jr. of Baton Rouge, La., and one brother Sam Barnett of Houston.

Mrs. Stella Barnett

Funeral services for Mrs. Stella Barnett were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Sunday, February 11, at 3 p. m. with the Rev. Rayford Harris officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Born November 7, 1887 in Jones County, Texas, she had resided in this area for approximately 55 years. She died Friday, February 8, in the Christian Home for the Aged in Houston.

Survivors include a daughter, Jennie Clyde Allegretti of Orange, California, a son, George Barnett, Jr. of Houma, La. and several grandchildren.

Alice Barr

Funeral services for Alice Barr, 93, were held Sept. 6 at 2 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral home Chapel with Rev. Doug Blanton officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery.

Miss Barr was born Aug. 15, 1894 in Rockwall City, Iowa, the daughter of John James and Emma Rosina Ramige Barr. She died Sept. 4, 1987.

Miss Barr was a retired school teacher. She taught school for 47 years, in San Antonio and in Palacios, retiring from Palacios I. S. D. where she taught third grade. She was a graduate of the University of Missouri and the Conservatory of Music in Missouri. She helped in forming the Second Presbyterian Church in Palacios and acted as a teacher and musician in the church during its formation. She was currently a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Palacios.

Miss Barr had been a resident of Palacios since 1915.

Survivors include one sister, Sylva Barr Davenport of Palacios; one brother and sister-in-law, Henry Theodore and Helen Barr of Palacios; one niece, Doris Ann Barr of San Antonio; and nephews, Wallace Barr of Palacios, James Morgan Barr of Houston and Richard D. Barr of Saudi Arabia.

Pallbearers were Kevin Templeman, Clair W. Lynn, John E. Toellner, Royce Harvey, Bob Christianson and Bruce T. Elliott.

Henry Barr

Funeral services for Henry Barr, 80, were held Aug. 20 at 10 a. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Scot Edmondson officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery.

Barr was born Sept. 14, 1907 in Marysville Missouri and died Aug. 18, 1988 at Citizen’s Medical Center in Victoria.

A member of the Trinity Baptist Church, Barr was a resident of Palacios for the past 73 years.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Elva (Marsh) Barr of Palacios; and one sister, Sylva Barr Davenport, also of Palacios.

Mildred Juanita Barr

Funeral services for Mrs. Mildred Juanita Barr were held Friday, October 20, at 11 a. m. in the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Elroy Weikel officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A resident of Palacios since childhood, she was born August 19, 1899 in Birmingham, Alabama, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Hagood. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women’s Circle, Wednesday Club and Order of the Eastern Star. She passed away Thursday morning in Wagner General Hospital.

She is survived by one son, Wallace Barr of Palacios, and several nieces and nephews.

Minda Louise Barr

Funeral services for Miss Minda Louise Barr were held at 3 o’clock Monday afternoon, August 5, at the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. Leslie E. Webb officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Daughter of the late John James Barr and Rosina Ramige Barr, she was born in Lake City, Iowa on September 21, 1897. In 1913 the family moved to Palacios where she resided until her death Saturday night, August 3, in Wagner General Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She served as a Pink Lady at the hospital and did volunteer work at the library as long as her health permitted it.

She is survived by two sisters, Miss Alice Barr and Mrs. Sylvia Davenport of Palacios; two brothers, Harold Barr of Bay City and Henry Barr of Palacios; three nephews and one niece.

Albert Barrera Dies In Galveston; Services Held Here Monday

Albert Barrera, a native Texas born at Brownsville, Texas, April 7, 1888, passed away Friday morning, July 23, at the Marine Hospital in Galveston after an illness of several months.

Son of the late Albert and Rose DeToro Barrera, he was a retired fisherman and for several years operated a taxi here.

Rosary was recited Sunday night, at 8 o’clock at the Palacios Funeral Home.

Requiem Mass was said Monday, July 26, at 9 a. m. in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Harrold officiating. Burial was in Palacios Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife Carmen Barrera of Palacios; one daughter, Consuelo Hancock of San Diego, Texas; two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Chester Barrett

Funeral services for Chester Barrett were held at 10 a. m. Friday, November 19 in the Allison Funeral Chapel in Liberty. Graveside services were held in the Palacios Cemetery at 3 p. m. with the Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating.

Chester Barrett was born in Pampa, Texas on January 15, 1919. He moved to Palacios in 1927 with his mother and father, three brothers and six sisters. He attended Palacios Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1937. After serving in the United States Coast Guard in World War II, he accepted a position with the Sun Pipeline Company by whom he was still employed at the time of his death in Liberty, Texas, on November 17, 1976.

He was preceded in death by his father, Henry M. Barrett; his mother, Ruth Adee Barrett; and his brother, Fred Barrett. He is survived by his wife, Carmen; two brothers, Ed and Sterling of Palacios; six sisters, Lela Halliday of Port Lavaca; Velma Pafume, of Northbrook, Ill.; Thelma Gifford, of Schertz; Arlene Stewart, Mildred Scott, and Winifred Thompson, all of Palacios.

Edward A Barrett

Edward A. Barrett, 84, of Palacios died Jan. 13, 1997 at Wager General Hospital in Palacios.

Mr. Barrett was born July 1, 1912 in Pampa, Texas to Henry M. and Ruth Adee Barrett. He moved to Palacios with his family in 1927 at the age of fifteen where he attended Palacios High School. He became active in the seafood industry at a very early age. He was foreman in the Crawford Packing Company and later owned and operated the Palacios Machine Shop and Shipyard and a fleet of shrimp trawlers. He sold all his interests in the seafood business in 1976, but remained an active farmer and cattle rancher until 1990 when he retired. Mr. Barrett served the City as long time councilman, mayor, fire chief, and President of the Cemetery Board. He was instrumental in starting the marine education program in the local schools, and in 1986, was honored with a Certificate of Meritorious and Distinguished Service in furthering the aims and ideals of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.

Funeral services will be 10 a. m. Thursday, Jan. 16, 1997 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Hollas Hoffman officiating. Interment will be at the Palacios Cemetery.

Survivors include wife Ella Jordan Barrett of Palacios; three sisters Thelma Gifford of Schertz, Tx., Lela Halliday of Port Lavaca, and Winifred Thompson of Palacios. Mr. Barrett was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and three brothers.

Fred Francis Barrett

Funeral services for Fred Francis Barrett were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Monday, March 17, at 3 p. m. with the Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Son of the late Henry M. and Ruth Adee Barrett, he was born June 15, 1915 in Pampa, Texas. The family moved to Palacios approximately 50 years ago where Fred attended school and starred as an athlete. During World War II he served with the U. S. Coast Guard. Most of his life he had worked in the seafood industry and was Seafoods Manager for Dumas Seafoods when he had to retire due to ill health. He passed away Saturday afternoon, March 15, after an illness of approximately two years.

He is survived by his wife Mrs. Mary Barrett of Palacios; two daughters, Mrs. Vadis Corporon of Conroe and Mrs. Frances Smith of Palacios; three brothers, Ed and Sterling Barrett of Palacios and Chester Barrett of Liberty; six sisters, Mrs. Lela Haliday of Port Lavaca, Mrs. Mildred Scott, Mrs. Winifred Bates and Mrs. Arlene Stewart of Palacios, Mrs. Velma Pafume of North Brookfirld, Ill. and Mrs. Thelma Gifford of Schertz, Texas; and five grandchildren.

Henry M. Barrett

Funeral services for Henry Madden “Pop” Barrett were held at 10 a. m. Monday, August 11 at the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. Rayford Harris officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Born June 11, 1887, in New Middleton, Tenn., the son of the late Edward Exum Barrett and Hanna Winifred Barrett, he had been a resident of Palacios for the past 42 years, where until his retirement a few years ago, he was associated with the shrimping industry on the Gulf Cost. He was an ardent sports fan and Sharks booster. For several years he was a member of the Palacios Fire Department and on various occasions entertained the group with poetry he had written. After a lengthy illness, he passed away in Wagner General Hospital at 9 a. m. Saturday, August 9.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Palacios; six daughters, Mrs. Carl Halliday of Port Lavaca, Mrs. J. C. Scott, Mrs. Arthur Thompson, Mrs. Charles Stewart, all of Palacios, Mrs. Joseph Pafume of Northbrook, Ill. and Mrs. Vernon Gifford of Schertz; four sons, Ed, Fred and Sterling, all of Palacios and Chester of Liberty; one sister, Mrs. Buel Sailor of Lompoc, Calif.; 19 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Henry S. Barrett

Henry Sterling Barrett, 63, of 211 Morton St. died Thursday in Wagner General Hospital following a long illness.

Born April 15, 1917 in Pampa, Mr. Barrett was a commercial shrimper, a resident of Palacios for the past 50 years, and a member of the First Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 3 p. m. Saturday at the church with Reverend Leon Maxwell officiating. Burial was at Palacios Cemetery under the direction of the Palacios Funeral Home.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Tracy Barrett of Palacios, two daughters, Mrs. Nancy Bonds of Channelview and Carla Jansky of Edna; two sons, Carl Barrett of Lake Jackson and Henry Sterling Barrett Jr. of Port Arthur; six sisters, Mrs. Mildred Scott, Mrs. Arlene Stewart, and Mrs. Winifred Thompson, all of Palacios; Mrs. Thelma Gifford of Schertz, Tx., Mrs. Verlma Pafume of Chicago, Illinois and Mrs. Lela Halliday of Port Lavaca; a brother, Ed Barrett of Palacios; and eight grandchildren

Pallbearers were Arthur White, Lindsey Rickaway, Arthur Kinsfather, Harley Snider, Richard Sanders and Dr. J. C. White, Jr.

Mary Ardel Barrett

Funeral services for Mary Ardel Barrett, 69, of Palacios, were scheduled to be held at 11 a. m. Dec. 17, 1991 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Stacy Houser officiating. Interment was to be in Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Barrett was born May 4, 1922 in Beaumont, Tex. to Luther and Irene Ainsworth Burrell. She died December 14, 1991 at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton

A resident of Palacios for 45 years, she was a member of the First Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Frances Smith of Palacios; a sister, Gladys Walker of Pablo, Colo.; two brothers, William Burrell of Houston and Dudley Burrell of Lumberton, Tx.; three grandchildren, Kendra Smith of Phoenix, Az., Kayla Shine of Bay City and Kenneth Barrett of Palacios; and three great-grandchildren, Justin Losoya and Brittany Shine of Bay City and Ashley Smith of Palacios.

Pallbearers were Giles Shine, Bill Burrell, Dickie Lang, Kenneth Smith, Sonny Brhlik and Tommy Tobias.

Ruth Adee Barrett

Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth Adee Barrett were held at 2 p. m. Tuesday, February 8, at the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Born December 10, 1891, in Phillipsburg, Kansas, she was the daughter of the late Frank F. and Sarah A. Adee. She married Henry Madden Barrett, who preceded her in death on August 9, 1969. She was a resident of Palacios 44 years. An ardent flower lover, she was an active member of the Tres Palacios Garden Club until illness prevented her attendance. After a lingering illness, she passed away Sunday evening, February 6, in the Gulf Coast Nursing Home in Port Lavaca where she had been the past two years.

She is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Lela Halliday of Port Lavaca, Mrs. Mildred Scott, Mrs. Winifred Thompson, Mrs. Arlene Stewart, all of Palacios, Mrs. Velma Pafume of Northbrook, Ill., Mrs. Thelma Gifford of Schertz; four sons, Ed A. Barrett, Fred F. Barrett and Sterling Barrett of Palacios and Chester Barrett of Liberty; 18 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Final Rites Held For Mrs. Walter R. Barrier, Heart Attack Victim - Frances Wesley Barrier

Funeral services for Mrs. Walter R. Barrier were held Sunday, June 12, at the Palacios Funeral Home at 2 o'clock. Mr. Archie Crabtree, pastor of the Church of Christ, officiated. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Francis Wesley Barrier was born the daughter of R. W. Robinson and Francis Cox Robinson on July 11, 1886 in Rising Star, Texas. In 1913 she was united in marriage to Walter R. Barrier and they had been residents of Palacios the past 15 years. She passed away suddenly at her home, 505 Ritchie, Saturday morning, June 11.

She is survived by her husband, W. R. Barrier of Palacios; two daughters, Mrs. John C. Richards, Palacios and Mrs. J. J. Kelly, Houston; two sons, Walter E. Barrier, Palacios and C. O. Barrier, Houston; six grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. W. R. Stark, Brady and Mrs. Josie Reed, Burnet, several nieces and nephews.

Walter R. Barrier Are Held Thursday P. M.

Funeral services for Walter R. "Jake" Barrier were held Thursday, April 6th at the Palacios Funeral Home at 2 o'clock. The services wee conducted by Mr. Fred Conner and Mr. Archie Crabtree, pastors of the Church of Christ, of which he was a member.

Walter Rosser Barrier was born the son of Francis Marion and Mary Ellen Barrier on January 20, 1875 in Carpenter, Alabama. In 1913 he was united in marriage to Francis Wesley Robinson who preceded him in death on June 11, 1960.

To this union were born five children, one daughter passed away at the age of two. Surviving children are Mrs. John C. Richards of Palacios, Mrs. J. J. Kelly of Houston, Walter E. Barrier of Palacios and Charles O. Barrier of Houston, several nieces, nephews and seven grandchildren.

Linda Kay Allen Bartosh

Funeral services for Linda Kay Allen Bartosh, 53, of Palacios, were held May 19, 1996 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Rev. Cassie Jarzombek officiating.

Mrs. Bartosh was born Dec. 31, 1942 in Bay City, Texas to Eddie Mae Henderson and the late W. E. Allen. She died May 18, 1996 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis Bartosh of Palacios; a son, James Allen of Huntsville; her mother, Eddie Mae Henderson and step-father John Henderson of Linden; step-mother Ann Byers of Lovelady; a sister, Patricia Hand of Nacogdoches, and a brother, John W. Henderson of Linden.

Pallbearers were Keith Hand, Robert Hester, Gene Karasek, Jim Bartosh, Tim Cerny, Lawrence Bartosh, David Bartosh and Gene Karasek, Jr.

City Marshal Lester W. Bashaw Buried Monday

Funeral services for Lester Warren Bashaw, 38, Palacios City Marshal, were held here Monday at 2:30 p. m. He died suddenly Saturday of a heart attack.

Born November 29, 1913, at Rogers, Texas, Mr. Bashaw came here at the age of 14 and was a graduate of the class of 1933 at Palacios High School. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II and was accorded full military honors at his funeral by the Lt. William Lloyd Queen Post 2467 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, of which he was a member.

Mr. Bashaw was overseas nearly three years with the 1st Amphibious Tractor Battalion of the 1st Marine Division, seeing action of Guadalcanal, New Guinea, and Okinawa.

Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Winifred Bashaw, a son, Bobby, of the U. S. Navy; a daughter, Joy; two brother, Ben Bashaw of Port Lavaca and Jesse Bashaw of Bay City; and a sister, Mrs. Velma Harris of Houston.

Mrs. Minnie Bashaw

Mrs. Minnie Bashaw, who passed away at her home in this city Sunday evening, Sept. 24, was born Feb. 4, 1883 at Lockhart, Texas.

Eleven years ago she came to Palacios and has continued to make this her home, having charge of an apartment house for the past several years, and had made a large circle of friends by her kindly manner and devotion to home and family. She had been a member of the Christian Church many years, but had been unable to attend regular services for some time.

The deceased is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ernest Harris, Houston; three sons, Ben, of Edcouch, Lester and Jesse of Palacios; two sisters, Mrs. H. F. Dillard, in Thompson, Texas, Mrs. S. H. Price, Rogers, Texas; and one brother, Walter Jesse, of Markham, besides a number of grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 4 o’clock at the Brandon-Duffy Funeral Home conducted by Rev. L. W. Crouch, of the Baptist Church, after which burial was made in the Palacios Cemetery, and was attended by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends.

Among those from out of town here for the services were Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Harris, and children of Houston; Mr. and Mrs. Ben Bashaw and children of Ed Couch, Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Dillard of Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Price, son and daughter, of Rogers, Walter Jesse, of Markham, besides a number of friends and all the grandchildren.
