According to the few available sources, Hill Photo and Novelty was located in the Williams Building at 211 Fifth Street in Palacios. Mr. J. M. Hill was the owner and his name has been found as J. Murphree and J. Murfree Hill. His wife was Grace Smith Hill. They were enumerated in the 1940 census as J. M., age 60, born in Tennessee, and Grace Hill, age 49, born in Texas. Their residence was 717 1/2 Park Avenue in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Ward 4 which now appears the parking lot of the Park Place Baptist Church. In 1935 they had been living in El Paso, Texas. His occupation was photographer working for himself and Grace was a private nurse in a private hospital. The earliest known photo taken by Mr. Hill was of the 203rd MO, CA (AA), Palacios, Texas, taken on January 15, 1941. Grace died in Austin, Texas in 1944 and according to her death certificate, she was a registered nurse and the daughter of T. F. Smith. The last mention of Mr. Hill in the Palacios Beacon was November 2, 1944. Tidbits From the Palacios Beacon J. M. Hill, who was seriously ill for several weeks in Houston is home now and feeling as well as could be expected. Hill - Grace Smith Hill Palacios citizens were shocked and grieved this week to learn of the death of Mrs. J. M. Hill in Austin where she was taken last week for treatment. We have not been informed as to funeral arrangements. Our sympathy is extended to the bereaved husband and other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Hill have conducted a curio shop in the Williams building on Fifth Street the past three years. Hill of the Hill Photo and Novelty shop announces this week that he is prepared to do all kinds of photo work and kodak finishing. He will have as his assistant, J. M. Sejhan, of Hot Springs, Ark., who has had 34 years of experience in photo and kodak work.
