Anna Ve Stevens Farr died at home in the early hours of January 28, 2018; her husband Jerry, her daughter Joanna and her son Steven at her side. The world will miss her unconditional compassion, her mischievous humor and her infectious laugh. For decades, Anna was a leader of political and educational activism in San Marcos. She walked countless miles, knocking on doors, advocating for candidates and causes to protect the environment, education, and equity. With an unwavering sense of justice, she challenged and changed decisions from City Hall to the University President’s office to the County Commissioner’s Office. To her last breath, she believed in the good of all people and was determined to live her life by the values she wanted to see in the world around her. Anna’s personal life and career were motivated by her love for children. As an elementary school teacher in San Antonio and Lockhart, she brought the gift of literacy to hundreds of students. Then, as a professor of education and supervisor of student teachers at Texas State for decades, she influenced the lives of many thousands of children by training and supporting hundreds of our community’s teachers. Among her favorite causes was the Hays County Child Protective Board, which she helped found in 1978. Over the course of 40 years, she tirelessly advocated for foster children in our community, even and especially when that meant representing their interests in the halls of government. Among other accolades, Anna was recognized at various points in her life as San Marcos’s “Woman of the Year” and the Central Texas Council of Child Protection Board’s “Volunteer of the Year.” Her most cherished recognition might have been the establishment of the Anna Ve Farr Heroes in Education Award, an annual award for educators who serve children most in need, especially abused and neglected children in foster care. Anna’s own children and grandchildren (and Shelties) were the center of her being. She was a fixture at Joanna’s and Steven’s science fairs, swim meets, and softball games (even though she wasn’t that into science, swimming and sports). Her grandchildren Calla, Clara, Jeremiah and Ella were unquestionably the light of her life. Her pride in them fueled her sparkle and smiles, even as her physical health declined in recent years. Anna’s loyalty to family and friends was forged by close relationships with her aunts and cousins in Sargent, Texas, and built on her admiration for her father, John Stevens and mother, Willie Lou Freeman. The tragic early loss of her sister, Rita Faye reinforced her desire to keep her family close, and throughout her life she built close circles of loyal relationships. So many people around her, especially Joanna’s husband, Otto Tegtmeyer and Steven’s wife, Hannah McElhinny, felt Anna’s welcoming embrace as family. Anna spoke fondly of growing up with her chickens and cows on her family’s ranch in Matagorda County. The love of her life, Jerry, grew up just a few miles down the road, although they did not discover their connection until they both moved to San Marcos to attend Southwest Texas State Teacher’s College. And while Anna and Jerry built exactly the lives they wanted in San Marcos, Anna was never more at home than when she was playing dominoes, warmly teasing and being teased, and nurturing her family in Sargent. We’re so grateful that, just as she cherished throughout her life, circles of friends and family from both Sargent and San Marcos were together around her in her dying hours, sharing the stories and love that made her so happy. Anna - our wife, mother, Nanna, cousin, and friend - was a spark of warmth and light in all our lives. While we are devastated to have lost her, we are all better for having basked in her infinite empathy, her fierce devotion, and her unconditional faith in each of us. Her loving laugh will echo in our hearts, always. Funeral Services for Mrs. Bennie G. Farris, age 72 of Wharton, TX will be held Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Sorrell, TX with the Rev. Jason Walker Fatheree, age 43, of Frisco, Texas, passed away on September 28, 2017. He was born on December 24, 1973, in Monroe, Louisiana, to Maunsell Bennett and Ernest Lea (Walker) Fatheree. Jason is survived by his wife, Nancy Hightower Fatheree of Frisco, Texas; his son, John Walker Fatheree; his mother, Ernest Lea Fatheree of Ferriday, Louisiana; his father, Maunsell “Doc” Fatheree and wife Ann of Midfield, Texas; his sister, Sonia Fatheree Cates of Orlando, Florida; his mother-in-law, Fran Hightower of Lufkin, Texas; and his nephew, Grant Hightower of Lufkin, Texas. Jason is preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Harold Cates; father-in-law, Oscar Hightower; and brother-in law, Richard Hightower. Jason earned his Juris Doctor degree from St. Mary's University School of Law in 2000. In 1996, he graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of the Arts degree in Government. Jason was a partner at the law firm of Kilpatrick Townsend in Dallas, Texas, where he focused his practice on complex commercial litigation. Prior to joining Kilpatrick Townsend, Jason was a partner at Crouch & Ramey, a litigation law firm based in Dallas, Texas. While attending law school, Jason was selected as Outstanding Student of the Year in Clinical Studies and was a recipient of Best Speaker in Moot Court Competition. During the summer of 1998, he studied abroad at the Institute of World Legal Problems in Innsbruck, Austria, where he was instructed by Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist of the U.S. Supreme Court. Jason was recognized as a Texas “Super Lawyer” in 2016 and the three years immediately preceding and a "Rising Star" in 2013 and the six years immediately preceding by Texas Monthly and Law & Politics magazines. In 2015, he was recognized by the American Academy of Trial Attorneys as one of the “Premier 100” trial attorneys for Texas. In 2016, The National Academy of Jurisprudence designated Mr. Fatheree as one of the "Premier 100" attorneys for Texas. Jason was very involved with his community and professional activities. He also loved his Texas Longhorns and Texas Country Music. Those that knew Jason knew his love of monogrammed shirts, Hermes ties, fancy cowboy boots, and the law. His son, John, was his pride and joy, and Jason lovingly shared his love of all things Texas with him. Jason's family and friends were important to him. He liked nothing better than to agitate those he loved and to entertain through stories and jokes; his boisterous laugh will be remembered. Pallbearers are childhood friends, Daniel Horowitz and Chance Stone; nephew, Grant Hightower; good friend, Cody Odom; and his longtime law school friends, Joe Glenn Kahla, Heath Poole, Chris Dillon, and Adam Beever. In addition, Daniel Horowitz and Hubert Crouch, his longtime mentor and friend, will share memories of Jason during the service. Hazel Mae Fehmel, 96, of Bay City passed away August 18, 2017. She was born May 10, 1921 in Dennison, Texas to the late Frank Slagle and Inez Weaver Slagle. She was co-owner/operator of Fehmel Crop Dusting Service. She was preceded in death by her husband J. W. Fehmel, a son Bill Fehmel, Jr. and granddaughter Karen Fehmel. Survivors include daughters Eleanor Deuel & husband Les of Victoria and Rebecca Phillips of Fulshear, TX; son Ronnie Fehmel & wife Jean of Bay City; daughter-in-law Margaret Fehmel of Bay City as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Lawrence William Feldhousen, Jr., 85, of Blessing, passed away February 17, 2018. He was born December 21, 1932 in Ellsworth, Kansas to Lawrence William Feldhousen, Sr. and Josephine Renc Feldhousen. Lawrence “Sonny” married Myrtle Henkes March 9, 1985. Sonny is preceded in death by his parents; sister Bernice Jezek, and brothers Elmer and Leonard Feldhousen. Jerome Gershin Feldman, 87, of Bay City, passed away November 7, 2017. He was born September 21, 1930 in Beaumont, TX to Max and Bessie Walker Feldman. Jerome served his county in the US Army during the Korean War. Jerome is preceded in death by his parents, and son Nason Feldman. He is survived by his wife Susan Whanger Feldman; daughters Stefanie Alvheim, Shayna Barksdale and Elizabeth Feldman; son Alex Raines; sisters Ruth Davis and Marie Cweren; brother Phillip Feldman, and grandchildren Bridget Alvheim, Bergen Alvheim, Jason Feldman and Lacey Feldman. Leonard Lee Ferguson Sr., 85, of Van Vleck, Tx, passed away peacefully April 29, 2017. He was born April 11, 1932 in Leon County to the late Barrnet M. Ferguson and Amanda Irene Robinson Ferguson. At 6'3, he was a basketball player when he graduated from Leona High School and then attended Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, TX followed by Texas Lutheran College in Seguin, TX where he majored in accounting. Afterwards, Leonard enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he was recommended to attend sea school to become part of the Sea-Going Marines, in the Elite CV-47s. He served two years aboard the attack air craft carrier “The U.S.S. Philippine Sea”, which was involved in the Korean Conflict. After serving for 3 years, he exited the Marines with the rank of Sergeant. His role as a Marine was one he was especially proud of. Leonard then went to work in New Braunfels, TX at the textile mill where he met his wife of 56 years, Doris Ann Hartwick Ferguson, whom he married on February 11, 1961. They moved to Jones Creek, Texas where he worked as a prison guard at the Clemens Unit. Following this, he became employed at Phillips Petroleum Co. in Old Ocean, TX where he immediately was tagged with the nickname: “Shotgun”. He retired from Phillips in 1996 as a Stillman, and was employed for 29 ½ years. He and his family moved to Van Vleck 50 years ago. During this time he served on the Water Board in Van Vleck and served in the Vol. Fire Dept and was Chief for several years. He was also a member of the V.F.W. Post 8551. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Van Vleck, Tx. Leonard loved to fish and eat the fish he caught. He enjoyed hunting and gardening and his grandkids were the light of his life. He loved visiting with family and with his quick wit, he always had a funny comeback to any remark. He enjoyed reading comic books, watching old westerns, and watching Houston Astros games on T.V. He was a news hound, a trait he passed on to his grandson. He liked to read his bible and upper room nightly, from which his favorite verse was John: 2, 14, “In my Father's house there are many mansions...” He loved the holidays and his favorite Christmas song was “Oh Holy Night”. His favorite book was: “I Give You Texas”, he always had several dogs, especially Boxers and Boston Terriers, and raised cockatiels and other birds for many years. His favorite song was the instrumental, “Unchained Melody”. His favorite flower was the blue hydrangea, which did not compare to the blue of his eyes. He will be greatly missed by his family who depended on his intelligence, strength, and integrity in their daily lives. Leonard was preceded in death by brothers Quincy A. Ferguson and Marion F. Ferguson, as well as his twin brother Lloyd. B. Ferguson of Leona, Tx. He is survived by his wife, Doris Ann Ferguson of Van Vleck, Tx.; son Leonard Lee Ferguson, Jr. and his wife Sharon of Richmond, Tx. ; daughter Nancy Cox and husband Ken of China Spring, Tx. ; ister Mittie Cobb of Austin, Tx,; grandchildren Erin Ferguson of Richmond, Tx and K.C. Cox and Kylie Cox of China Spring, Tx. The family will receive friends and relatives from 5pm-6pm, Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at the First Methodist Church in Van Vleck, Tx. Guadalupe Fernandez died Wednesday, April 18, at the family residence here, 1402 Ave M. She was 15 years, three months and twenty days of age. Services were held Thursday at 4:00 o’clock from the Latin-American Catholic church with burial in Cedarvale cemetery. She is survived by her father, Lucas Fernandez; one sister, Mary Garcia; three brothers, Thomas Lucas and George, all of Bay City. Taylor Bros. were in charge of arrangements.

Figueroa, a longtime resident of Bay City, died at 1:40 p. m. Thursday, July 24, at St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington, La. Figueroa was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Fermanita Figueroa. Gary Lynn Finch, 62, of Blessing passed away on Sunday, March 18, 2018. He was born in Beeville, Texas on October 24, 1955 to the late Dowling and Eula Mae Irle Finch. Gary married Debbie Gibson Finch on April 5, 1994 in Blessing. He worked in Janitorial Services, graduated from Tidehaven High School, had a Degree from TSTC Palacios in Aquaculture, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blessing. Gary made his Profession of Faith at the age of 7 and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He is survived by Debbie Finch; brother: Bradford (Jeanine) Finch of Seguin; and foster brother: David Phillips of Blessing. He was preceded in death by parents; foster parents; and a brother. The family will receive visitors from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Thursday, March 22, 2018 at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held 10:30 AM Friday, March 23, 2018 at Hawley Cemetery with Bro. Mrs. A. D. Fisher, of North Bay City, a pioneer settler of this county, died at her home this morning at 6 o’clock, at the age of 77 years, 6 months and 10 days. The funeral services will be held from the Methodist Church tomorrow afternoon at 3 o’clock, Rev. O. E. Vivion officiating. Decedent was a woman of strong Christian character, a life long member of the Methodist Church and a devoted mother and friend. The children surviving are: Sidnay, Grant, J. H., Mrs. Adams and Mrs. W. R. Jeter. The Tribune extends its sympathy to the bereaved ones.

After an illness of several months, Cleo Bernice Flowers, age 15 years, died at the home of her father, Mr. A. M. Flowers, Wednesday, at 8 p. m. The funeral took place this afternoon from Taylor Bros. undertaking parlors, with interment in Cedarvale Cemetery. Some months ago decedent contracted tuberculosis and all that was possible was done for her but to no purpose. She suffered patiently until the end bravely facing the inevitable. The Tribune joins the friends of the family with sympathy for them in their bereavement.

Funeral services for W. A. Fondren, 92, of Van Vleck, were held Wednesday with burial in the Cedarvale Cemetery of Bay City. Mr. Fondren died at his home Monday night after a lingering illness. He was born and raised in Mississippi but moved to Texas in 1910 and came to Matagorda County five years later, living here ever since. Surviving are his wife, eight children, 30 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.

Joe Edwin Frost, 77, of Bay City, Texas passed away September 22, 2017. He was born March 22, 1940 in Parks, Arkansas to the late Ellis Ferrell Frost and Ila Mae Lindsey Frost Hiltunen. He was a retired Iron Worker and co-owner of Frost Mobile Home Park in Bay City. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Elizabeth Frost Morrow; and one brother, Donald Ross Frost. H. M. Fussell, age 32 years, five months and 19 days, passed away Sunday morning in the Memorial Hospital in Houston. Mr. Fussell was taken ill March 10 with pneumonia. Surviving are his wife, one daughter, two sons, his father; three sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Roberts of San Augustine, Miss Merrill and Mary Fussell of Bay City; two brothers, Johnnie of Bay City and Lawrence of San Augustine. Funeral services were held at 2:30 o’clock at the Walker-Matchett Funeral Home, with the Rev. Anderson officiating. Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery.
