A mountain of a man joined our Lord in Heaven this week. John Roy Faseler passed away July 7, 2013. Big John’s height and strength, although mighty, were dwarfed by the size of his kind and gentle heart. From his sweet blue eyes to his broad smile, John Faseler touched the lives of so many. Born April 25, 1946, to E.J. and Rosemary Faseler, John’s early years were spent at Thompson’s Camp, a Humble Oil Camp, where he began his schooling in a one-room schoolhouse. John’s family moved to Houston and then to Bay City, Texas. Faseler graduated from Bay City High School in 1964 and headed to play college football on a Daryl Royal Scholarship to the University of Texas. Switching to Texas A&I, John met and married the light and love of his life, Barbara Long. Upon graduating in January of 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry, John and Barbara headed to San Antonio where John would begin his service in the United States Air Force. After training, John was stationed in Wichita Falls, Texas, at Sheppard Air Force Base, where he went on to earn his Masters of Science Degree in Biology at Midwestern University. In 1973, when his tour of duty ended, John accepted a position as a science teacher at Brazosport High School. John and Barbara moved with their first two sons to Lake Jackson where they settled down and had their third son. In the early 1980s John went on to serve as an assistant principal at Lake Jackson Intermediate School, where he was known for his strong but fair disciplinary actions. Students and teachers, alike, respected and admired John Faseler for his honesty, integrity and his ‘good ole country boy’ logic. John left his beloved LJI to head up Brazosport Independent School District’s Transportation, Maintenance and Food Service Departments as their director. John Loved his time spent in BISD. He loved the students, co-workers, staff and ALL of the people whose jobs it was to maintain and keep everything working in the district. Although John retired in 2004, he continued to contribute to education as a substitute teacher and as a mentor for beginning teachers in the ACT Program of Houston. Cooking, fishing, vacationing and visiting with friends and co-workers brought much joy to John’s life. But John Faseler’s greatest joys came from laughing and spending time with his three boys and their families. John Faseler was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Lake Jackson. Faseler was a member of the Texas Association of Secondary School Administrators, on the advisory board of CAP (Community Awareness Program), a longtime member of the Gulf Coast Chapter of Football Association and a proud member of the Brazosport Retired Teachers’ Association. John Faseler is preceded in death by his parents, E.J. and Rosemary Yates Faseler; and his brother, Jeffrey Charles Faseler; by his mother and father-in-law, John and Lucy Long; and sister-in-law Pam Long. John is survived by his wife Barbara; sons John Faseler, Jr. (Mary) of Austin, Keith Faseler (Jacquelyn) of Pearland and Bradley Faseler of Bellaire; and seven spirited and beautiful grandchildren, Madeline, Avery, Julia, Brent, Jamie, Tyler and Camden. He is also survived by his brother Dr. Robert Faseler (Delaine) of Port Neches. A celebration of John’s life, with light refreshments, was held Friday July 12, 2013 at 11:30 am, at the First United Methodist Church in Lake Jackson. Services followed at 1 p.m. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 13, at Pebble Grove Cemetery near Cameron, Texas. Following the service, a meal was served at John’s farmhouse. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Stanley Appel and staff, to the Methodist Hospital Neurological Institute, to Dr. Michael E. DeBakey Veterans’ Medical Center, the caregivers of Help, Inc., and Texas Home Health. The family requests donations may be made in memory of John Roy Faseler, to MDA-ALS Research Fund of the Methodist Neurological Institute, 6500 Fannin, Suite 802, Houston, Texas 77030. Arrangements were under the direction of Restwood Funeral Home & Memorial Park, Clute, Texas (979) 297-2121.
