Palacios Beacon, April 3, 2019
Beacon
publisher since
1980, Nick West passes away The longtime publisher of the Palacios Beacon, Nick West, passed away last Sunday after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer at the age of 61. West, a member of the United State Marine Corps. and transplant to Palacios, took over Publisher-Editor duties at the Beacon on July 4, 1981. Under his management, West transformed the Beacon into one of the premier smalltown newspapers in the state, winning multitudes of awards from the Texas Press Association, the South Texas Press Association (STPA) and Texas Gulf Coast Press Associations (TGCPA) that proudly hang in and around the Beacon office. Although he wasn’t a native of the City by the Sea, Palacios would come to be his forever home. The former Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year also served as President of the CofC and Board member of the STPA and TGCPA and was head of the Palacios Housing Authority and was instrumental in organizing the ‘original’ BayFest during the early to late 1980’s. During his time at the Beacon, he worked diligently and tirelessly to provide Palacios with the best newspaper he could. He was a relentless promoter of all things Palacios. Sludging through mud filled sidelines, sweat filled gymnasiums, and mosquito filled fields, West was always present at Palacios sporting events. From the Shark football games, to Sharkette volleyball games, to the ‘around-the-world’ travelling to cover Little League All-Star games, he never missed a beat. He stayed thru hurricanes and tropical storms to provide Palacian’s up-to date coverage via the newspaper’s website, PalaciosBeacon.com. One of West’s proudest accomplishments was the afore mentioned website which was the first news publication in Matagorda County to set up site on the world wide web.
Nicholas

Nick was a career newspaperman at various newspapers and was the Editor/Publisher of the Palacios Beacon for the last 33 years. One of Nick’s proudest chapters in life was working at the Beacon alongside his father, Bert, and his son Ryan; though at times challenging, these times were definitely cherished. He was a proud member and served in many capacities for several organizations some of which include: Texas Press Association, South Texas Press Association, Gulf Coast Press Association, Palacios Chamber of Commerce, Palacios Housing Authority, Harmonie Club Grand Marshall, recipient of Business of the Year, Palacios ISD’s Media of the Year, Chamber Man of the Year and started Palacios Information Network with Dale Porter and Murdoch McRae. Above all, his proudest achievement as serving in the United States Marine Corp. If there is one thing that Suzette was excellent at, it was at being the best nurse she could be. The two things she loved most in the world were her family, especially her daughter, Eve (Nikki), and her job. She was passionate about her job, and her patients received the ultimate in care. She touched the lives of many, many people that came through the ER’s that she worked at. If Suzette had one flaw, it was that she put the medical concerns of others before her own. Survivors include her daughter, Eve Nicole Wilson and Blake Eggemeyer of El Campo; brother, Michael Wilson of Austin; niece, Stacy Klobe and husband Michael of Austin; nephew, Jeff Wilson and wife Angela of El Campo; sister-in-law, Sharon Sifford and husband David of El Campo; aunt, Betty Hoffman of Markham; and great-nephews, Graham and Ian Klobe of Austin and Liam Wilson of El Campo. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandmother, Lola Taylor; brother, Robert Wilson; and numerous aunts. A memorial service was held on Friday October 10, 2014, at 10 a.m., at First Baptist Church in El Campo with the Rev. Rick Dubroc officiating. Memorial donations in memory of Suzette Wilson may be made to the Breast Cancer Awareness Fund or the American Diabetes Association. Condolences for the family may be left online at www.triskafuneralhome.com Triska Funeral Home El Campo, Texas, 979-543-3681.
