Emma Walker

Emma Walker, 76, of Bay City died December 22, 2002 at the Matagorda Nursing and Rehab Center in Bay City.

She was born August 1, 1926 in Oklahoma to the late Claude G. and Fannie May Burns Collins. Mrs. Walker was a resident of Bay City since 1946, and a member of the Church of God of Prophecy.

Survivors include: daughters and sons-in-law: Charlotte Hairston of Van Vleck, Carol Miller and Norman Wishnow of Katy, and Peggy and Gary Hairston of West Columbia; son and daughter-in-law: Jerry Leonard and Paula Walker of Richmond, Texas; brother: Claude G. Collins of Palacios; 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry G. Walker; sister; Mattie Boultinghouse; and brother, Wesley Collins.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, December 26, 2002, at the Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. James Logan officiating.

Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ronald Gomez, Timothy Hairston, Lee Harnar, Brian Walker, Michael Walker and John Stevens.

Jerry G. Walker

Funeral services for Jerry G. Walker, 69, of Bay City, are scheduled for 2 p. m. Saturday at the Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. John Kroon officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Mr. Walker was born Nov. 8, 1924, in Old Gulf, to Lee Otto and Pearl Schmerber Walker and died July 7, 1994, in Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

He served in the U. S. Army from 1943 to 1945 performing duties in England and France. He then came home and worked in the oil fields for two years. After working in the construction industry for 30 years and Parker Brothers for 15 years, he retired. He was a lifetime member of the V. F. W. Post #2438 and the Church of God of prophecy.

Survivors include his wife, Emma Collins Walker of Bay City; a son and daughter-in-law, Leonard and Paula Walker of Richmond; three daughters and sons-in-law, Charlotte and Bennie Hairston of Bay City, Carol Miller of Houston and Peggy and Gary Hairston of West Columbia; a brother, Martin Walker of Nederland; 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a host of friends and relatives.

Pallbearers are Lee Hornar, Timothy Hairston, Brian Walker, Scott Hale, Bennie Stevens and John Stevens.

Services are under the direction of Dick R. Elkins, Bay City Funeral Home.

Ethel Green Wallace

Funeral services for Ethel Green Wallace, 97, of Bay City, will be held Wednesday September 18, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Enterprise Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. J. Weldon Gilbert officiating.

Burial will follow at East View Cemetery.

Mama Ethel will lie in state at the church from 10 until 11 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 until 6 p.m. at Greens Mortuary.

Family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. at Enterprise Missionary Baptist Church.

Ethel Green-Wallace began her earthly journey on January 10, 1905 in Fayette County.

On September 12, 2002, her sojourn was completed.

During her 97 years on earth, her presence touched the lives of many who fondly referred to her as "Mama Ethel".

She was the loving mother of four children: Leroy Miller, Melvin Miller of Oakland, Calif., Lillie Copeland of Bay City, Texas., Nelson Miller, who preceded her in death, and Lillian Miller, daughter-in-law, wife of Nelson Miller.

Her memory will forever linger in the hearts of her nine grandchildren: Dr. Janis Williams of Toledo, Ohio, Melvin Jerome Walker, Dr. Debra Hill and Marjorie Watt of Houston Texas., Brenda Miller of Los Angeles, Calif., Nelson Miller, Jr., Melvin Miller of Galveston, Texas, Ira Joe Edison and Cheryl Wilcox of Bay City.

She leaves two god-daughters: Novia Walton of Fort Worth, Texas, and Chandi Jones of Houston, Texas to share in the homegoing celebration, and also four nieces, seven nephews, four great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends will sorely miss her.

Active Pallbearers were Kurbert Woods, Ira Joe Edison, Warren Woods, Chivas Wilcox, Cedric Woods, Billy Dykes, Dwain Bowden.

Honorary Pallbearers were Melvin Miller, Leroy Miller, Hart Lee Dykes, Arthur Dykes, Willie Dykes, Sammie Lee Smith, James Dykes, Lawrence Anderson.

Georgie Lee Williams Walton

Funeral services for Georgie Lee Williams Walton, 75, of Bay City, will be Saturday, August 12, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. at Mother Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. K. J. Griggs officiating. Burial will follow at East View Cemetery in Bay City. She will lie in state at Mother Zion Baptist Church Saturday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be Friday afternoon until 9:00 p.m. at Green's Mortuary.

On October 31, 1924 George Williams and Mila Miller Williams were blessed by the birth of their daughter Georgie Lee Williams in Cotton Plant, Arkansas. She passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2000 at the Matagorda House Healthcare Center in Bay City.

Upon graduation from Cotton Plant Academy in 1944, Georgie Lee went to Barber Scotia College in North Carolina where she graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She furthered her education at Purdue University and Ohio State University, receiving a Master's degree in institutuional management and her teaching certification. In 1952, she began her work in education at Jarvis Christian College, Hawkins, Texas as the Dean of Women, instructor and director of food services. She taught there from 1952 to 1960. On October 9, 1959 she was united in holy matrimony to John Walton.

Between 1960 and 1962, John and Georgie ran a successful restaurant in Prairie View, Texas providing the finest food and baked goods to the surrounding area and Prairie View students. In the fall of 1962, they moved to Bay City where Georgie had accepted a postition as the county home demonstration agent for Matagorda County. She worked in the field until she accepted a position in education as the secretary at Linnie Roberts Elementary where she worked from 1965 to 1968. In the fall of 1968, Georgie was back at home in the classroom between the years of 1968 to 1996, Georgie taught at John Cherry Elementary in the capacity of certified reading specialist and fifth grade teacher. During the summer, she completed her masters degree in education as well as her mid-management certification. At the time of her retirement, she had dedicated 38 years to education, with 3 of those years as a teacher and molder of children's lives and future. Even after retirement, Georgie continued to tutor students during the school year and in the summers.

Her gift for teaching carried over into her second vocation; music. For over thirty years, Georgie taught piano lessons to young people and adults in Matagorda and Brazoria County. She further shared her gift with her church family at the Mother Zion Missionary Baptist Church for over twenty years. She served as the sanctuary choir and male chorus musician as well as minister of music. She also played for the original Gulf Coast area chorus and the IMBGA mission departments during the association meetings. She further lended her musical gifts to fellow churches like Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, Markham, for a number of years. She was active in the Sunday school, Bible band and mission department for the church, city and district.

Georgie was also active within the community through her membership in the Ebony Club. She worked with the Charm school and chaired the scholarship committee.

She is survived by her husband John Walton of Bay City; two daughters and son-in-law Elmila W. McBride and Matthew of Houston, Ozella Walton of Bay City; two grandchildren Malik King and Daniel Joiner of Bay City; and many other family members, co-workers, church family, friends and a host of students.

Active pallbearers will be the Mother Zion Male Chorus. Honorary pallbearers will include John Walton, Matthew McBride, Malik King, and Daniel Joiner.

Roberta Lee Reeves Watkins

Roberta Lee Reeves Watkins, 97, passed away Monday evening, July 5, 2004. Known throughout the region as "Granny", she was born on June 5, 1907 in Edna, Texas.

Welcoming Granny to her eternal home are her loving husband, Charles Evan Watkins; her daughter, Bettie Watkins McGill; and her mother, Lizzie Gainer Reeves.

She is survived by: her sister, Lula Mae Oliver of Victoria; her son-in-law, Eugene B. McGill of Bay City; her grandchildren, Charla and husband Jim McMichael of Friendswood, and Mark B. McGill of Angleton; and her precious great-grandson, Andrew McMichael.

The family is most appreciative of the loving, loyal, and tender care provided to Granny by her long time care giver, Victoria Vasquez. Granny took great pleasure in being a member of their extended family.

Granny was loved and admired by all who knew her because of her unbending faith, her love of life, and the joy she brought to those around her.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 8, 2004 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Henry Joe Wendel
(February 22, 1928 - January 3, 2012)

Henry J. Tata Wendel, 83, of Bay City passed away January 3, 2012. He was born February 22, 1928 in Hillje, Texas to the late Pete Wendel and Anna Erdelt Wendel. Henry was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. He was a well-respected man who loved working cattle, camping and trail riding having even received awards for being the oldest trail rider in attendance as well as being the oldest rider actually on a horse. He was a loving husband for 63 years and a dedicated father who loved being with his family. Henry was a kind and gentle man who never hesitated to help anyone in need.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy Kasparek Wendel of Bay City; daughters Irene Parr & husband Johnny of Markham, Adeline Tedder & husband Thomas of Lake Limestone, TX and Maryann Rush & husband Dennis of Markham; son Donald Wendel of Bay City; brother Johnny Wendel of Glen Flora; grandchildren Stacey Johnson & husband Jimmy, Vanessa Ferguson & husband Cody, Shanna Tedder, Amy Harman, Justin Rush & Jarret Rush and two great grandchildren Hunter and Tristen Ferguson.

A rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM Friday, January 6, 2012 at the funeral home. Funeral service will be 10:00 AM Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with Father Casey Jarzombek officiating. Interment will follow at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing. Pallbearers will be Dennis Naiser, Pat Gwosdz, Kenneth Schoenvogel, Glen Riha, Jimmy Johnson and Tom Hundl. Donations in Henrys memory may be made to the charity of your choice. Susie Ruth Werlla

Susie Ruth Werlla, 88, of Vidor died Jan. 28, 2002 at her residence in Vidor. She was born Dec. 24, 1913 in Colterville, Texas to the late Walter Cate and Tommye Katura Onega Washburn Hamilton.

Mrs. Werlla was a member of Pine Forest Baptist Church in Vidor and a former longtime resident of Bay City and member of the First Baptist Church. She was a retired nurse who loved her patients, as well as her family and friends.

Survivors include: four daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Edward Ottis of Corpus Christi, Joe and Greg Knost of Vidor, Sue and Brent Kirby of Wadsworth, and Joy and David Haney of Vidor; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Debbie Werlla of Manvel, Texas; brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Neva Hamilton of Bay City; 13 grandchildren, Michael and Steve Ottis, Julie Labay, Bebo Knost, Lora Woodard, Karyle Magnes, Terri Langford, Shelley McClelland, Tricia McClelland, Kristin Johnson, Brian and Trey Haney, and Jennifer Jones; and by 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers: Harry, Jim and Walter Hamilton; one sister, Flora Clements and one grandson, Wesley Werlla.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 3 at the First Baptist Church in Bay City with the Rev. Mike Zimmerman officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons; Michael and Steve Ottis, Bebo Knost, Brian and Trey Haney, and Shannon Woodard.

Visitation with the family will be Saturday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Evey Dean Pike West

Evey Dean "MeMe/Deanie" Pike West, 79, of Angleton went to be with the Lord on October 17, 2004 at the Cypress Woods Care Center in Angleton.

She was born April 12, 1925 in Hagensport, Texas to the late Joseph Dave and Mary Sally King Pike.

She was a resident of Angleton the past 35 years and was a member of Danbury Baptist Church.

Evey Dean Pike married Willard D. West in Bay City, Texas on August 10, 1945.

Meme and Papa shared their love with those around them. Meme made a definite impact on all those she came in contact with, and she will be greatly missed.

Deanie was a lifetime member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW and a lifetime member of the Bay City Fraternal Order of Eagles.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, dancing, fishing and playing bingo.

She was a cook with Red Top Restaurant in Brazoria before she retired.

Survivors include: her children, Marsha and Willie Strelec of Bay City, Texas, David and Judy West of Kinder, Louisiana, Peggy and Butch Roe of Van Vleck, Texas, Janice and Billy Don Crowell of Angleton, Texas, Sammie and Tweety West of Brazoria, Texas, and Jimmy and Linda West of Angleton, Texas; sisters, Etta Mae and Bill Caldwell of Pittsburgh, Texas, and Ruth Harris of Bay City, Texas; brother, Vernon Lee and Lois Pike of Auburn, Nebraska; 17 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Willard West; and her daughter, Sharon D. West.

A celebration of MeMe's life was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 19, 2004, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, with Pastor Bill Tharp of Old Ocean Baptist Church officiating.

Interment followed at Cedarvale Cemetery. The family received friends at Taylor Bros. Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

Pallbearers were: grandsons, Jay Roe, Jimmy West, Jr, David Aaron West, USN, Shane West, James Dale Strelec and Thomas Bundick.

Honorary pallbearers were Michael West, USMC, Stephen West, USMC, John Randall, Jerry McKissick, Jason Baca, Kevin Kothmann, Robert Tyus, Willie Strelec, Jr., and Quincy Chambless.

Maxine Reading White

BAY CITY - Maxine White, 87, of Bay City, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003.

She was born April 3, 1916, in Belton, Bell County, to the late James Olan and Rosa Robinson Fulwiler. She was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church.

Survivors: husband, Glen I. White; daughters, Phoebe Reading Taylor and Patricia Reading Blandford, both of Houston, and Rebecca White Floyd of Deer Park; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. today at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, the Rev. Bruce Bonner officiating.

Fonda Nicole Batiste Wilkerson

Funeral services for Fonda Nicole Batiste Wilkerson, 28, of Bay City, and formerly of Houston, were held Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, at 2 p.m. at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 300 First Street in Van Vleck, with the Rev. Ruben Newell officiating.

Burial followed at East View Cemetery in Bay City. visitation was Friday afternoon until 9 p.m. Family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. in the chapel at Green's Mortuary. Nicole laid in state at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Saturday from 1 until 2 p.m. Nicole was born April 20, 1972, in Houston, to the union of Gary Smith and Sarah Batiste. She attended school in Houston. On Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000 her life came to a close.

She is survived by: husband, Barry Wilkerson; two daughters, Felecia Nicole and Prisilla Antoinette of Bay City; one son, Colin Trace, also of Bay City; her parents, Sarah and Eddie Richardson of Bay City and Gary and Margaret Smith of Houston; grandparents, Clarence and Madolia Batiste of Houston, and Ruby Phillips of Houston; brothers, Charles, Terrance, Nathan, Gary, and Ryan, all of Houston; mother-in-law, Jean Dale Williams of Houston; grandmother-in-law, Cunnie Brooks of Bay City; uncle Clarence and Megan Batiste of Alief; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Louis "Bit" Williams, Jr.

Funeral services for Louis Williams Jr. (Bit), 71, of Bay City will be Friday, September 28, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. L. C. Cunningham Jr officiating. Burial will follow at East View Cemetery in Bay City. Visitation will be Thursday, September 27 from noon until 9 p.m. at Green's Mortuary.

Louis Williams, the son of Louis Williams Sr. and Harriet Morgan Williams, was born on August 1, 1930 in Bell Bottom, Matagorda County.

On Friday, September 21, 2001, at Matagorda General Hospital, the angel of death kissed him to sleep and his spirit sweetly and quietly slipped into the presence of his creator.

He attended public school in Bay City. In 1951, he enlisted in the United States army and received an honorable discharge in 1959.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Adlai J. Ray and Linda of Houston; daughter, Denise Chambers of Houston; grandson, Allen Chambers of Houston; three aunts, Georgia Johnson and Alice Lewis of Bay City, Laverne Pointer and L. C. of Bay City; niece, Rosemary Hayes of Bay City and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Billie; his sister, Bobbie Jean; and brother Alonzo.

BAY CITY [Matagorda County, Texas]- Mable Windle, 96, of Bay City, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2002.

She was born to the late Dock and Lizzle Carter Windle. She was a Baptist.

Survivors: brother, Robert Windle of Bay City.

Preceded in death by: parents.

Irene Mae Wofford

Irene Mae Wofford, 96, of Bay City, died Aug. 31, 2001, at the Matagorda House (Legacy).

She was born June 17, 1905 in Bastrop, Texas to the late Samuel Houston and Nettie Tennie Tidwell Baker.

Mrs. Wofford was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a longtime resident of Bay City.

Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Ida and Johnnie Ralston of Port Lavaca; son and daughter-in-law, Bert and Ann Wofford, Jr. of Boling; sister, Louise Sykes of Bay City; three grandsons, six great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.

She is preceded in death by: her husband, Bert Wofford, Sr.; grandson, Ray Wofford; sisters, Dorothy Davidek, Orene Davis, Laura Haynes, Ruby Adams, and Myrtle Ashcraft; brothers, Frank Baker, Sr., Jesse Baker, and Sammie Baker.

Bert Wells Wofford

Bert Wells Wofford, 90, of Bay City passed away March 5, 1997 in Bay City.

He was born March 8, 1906 in Bay City to Wells Edwin and Alice Hubbard Wofford. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Mens Wesley Class.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Friday March 7, 1997 at the First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Cedarvale Cemetery.

He is survived by, wife of 72 years, Irene Baker Wofford of Bay City; daughter, Ira Ralston of Port Lavaca; son, Bert Wofford, Jr. of Boling; three grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Jimmie Woods, Sr.

Funeral services for Jimmie Woods, Sr. 55 of Bay City, Texas will be held Thursday July 6, 2000 at 6 p.m. at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Bay City, with the Rev. L. C. Jimmie was born to the union of Beno Woods and Sally Scott Woods in Bay City, on October 7, 1945. He passed away Friday June 30, 2000 at the Sea Breeze Health Care Center. He is survived by his wife Clarice Woods of Bay City; two daughters and a son-in-law Sandra W. Coulston and Berry of Alvin, and Elcena Josette Woods of Bay City; one son Jimmie Woods, Jr. of Bay City; three sisters Vera Mae Johnson, Maudester Edison and Willie, Margaret Green and Robert Lee all of Bay City; two brothers Otto Woods, Sr. and Gloria of Galveston, and Clarence Woods of Bay City; mother-in-law Katherine Patterson of B. Castille of Alvin, Alexandria, De'Avonshay, Al'Katlyn Woods and other relatives and friends; brother-in-law Eddie Allen of Bay City, sister-in-law Donna Woods of Wharton.
