Helen moved to Blessing, Texas in 1956 after marrying husband, E.R. Vacek Jr. After they divorced, she remained good friends with him and his wife, Billie Louise throughout their lives. She lived a wonderful life and was always optimistic no matter the circumstances. Her passion in life was working. She started working at the age of 12 and didn’t retire until 80. She worked for FHA and was a social worker for the state for many years, and she regretted retiring at 80. She always had a project going on, and never met a stranger. She loved to visit, be around people, and always had a witty comeback ready to go. In her younger years she hosted many children’s parties and church functions. She loved her Bay City and El Campo church family and going to church. She had many friends in Blessing who she loved dearly and were like family. At 86, she was still active, visiting people, and driving all around the surrounding counties. She will be greatly missed but we know we will see her again someday. John 11:25-26.

A memorial will be announced at a later date.

Donations may be sent to the El Campo Church of Christ, Tunnels to Towers, or the Wounded Warrior foundation.

Guadalupe “Lupe” "Tico" Valdez

March 28, 1954 — March 18, 2024

Guadalupe (Lupe) “Tico” Valdez, 69, of Wharton passed away peacefully at a Sugar Land hospital on March 18, 2024, after courageously battling numerous illnesses over many years. He was born on March 28, 1954, in Bay City, Texas to the late Angelina Charles and John Joe Valdez, Sr.

Lupe grew up and attended schools in Bay City but lived most of his life in Wharton. He joined the world’s greatest Air Force in 1972 and while enlisted, he worked as an Air Force Administrative Specialist and a Tactical Air Combat Control Specialist. While serving, he received the Air Force Accommodation Medal for his contributions to our country. Upon returning to Wharton in 1988, he worked for Texana for 8 years as their Crisis Intervention Administrator. He went on to work for Nanya Plastics Corporation in 1996 and dedicated countless long hours and shifts over the past 28 years. He was known to be a very hard worker and worked until he (literally) couldn’t any longer.

He was a longtime fan of the Dallas Cowboys and loved attending sporting events, especially for those of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was always their biggest fan, largest supporter, and the loudest to shout at the umpires. He was sure to never miss an event for any of his family members. He also had two great-grand pups, Bella and Dash, that he’d always visit with treats in hand. In his spare time, he enjoyed working on cars and salvaging through finds at “Pick-A-Part.” He also took pride in participating in various BBQ Cook- offs and numerous Relay for Life events for the American Cancer Society. He was well known for buying EVERYONE in the family a gift for the Christmas holiday (and gifting greeting cards stuffed with money for birthdays).

Along with his parents, Angelina and John Joe Sr, he is preceded in death by his sisters Refugio Cox, Helen Paniagua, Angie Lopez; and brothers Jesse Valdez, Sr., Lorenzo Valdez, Sr., and John Joe Valdez, Jr. Additionally, his first grandchild, Roy Christopher Mendiola was called to be with our Father in 2019.

Tico will be deeply missed by family and friends, near and far, but he will especially be missed by his only daughter, Tanya Valdez Mendiola and husband, Roy; brother, Genaro Hernandez and wife Delia; sisters Corrina Cortez and husband David, Rosemary Cox and husband Roger. He is also survived by his two grandchildren, Madison Nycole Mendiola and Ryan Michael Mendiola; and four great-grandchildren Krislynn Faith Mendiola, Jeremiah Rene Mendiola, Madilynn Elizabeth Mendiola, and Lovelynn Flavey Garcia. He leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews and amongst those is Amber Lathon, her husband Justin, and their two children Chase Allyn Denison and Sophia Analise Lathon.

The only request that Lupe had of his family when he fell extremely ill was: “make sure the little ones know how much I love them.”

The family would like to extend immense gratitude to his girlfriend of14 years, Rocio “Karla” Bravo. Karla supported Tico in everything he set out to do, cared for him through any and all of his illnesses, and loved him unconditionally. That is the kind of love one hopes to find in this life, and we are grateful he had someone to love him like such.

Marshall Alan Van Dyke

July 6, 1950 - July 20, 2023

Marshall Alan Van Dyke, 73, of Markham passed away July 20, 2023.  He was born July 6, 1950 in Luling, TX to the late Herman Wilson Van Dyke and Juanita Etheridge Van Dyke.

Marshall "PaPa Marshall" was a very loving man, he never met a stranger, he would say hi to everyone. He loved Fishing, Hunting, Rodeo, Houston Astros , watching his Grand-kids compete in Football, Basketball, Track and Softball, and loved going to the country to either Marty or Jim Bob's land to visit and lend a helping hand. A truck driver by trade, he loved going on a road trip driving trucks for different people. What set him apart from almost any crowd was his love for the Lord. He truly dedicated himself to the Lord quoting scriptures, making sure everyone knew God and was going to church, and praying thanksgivings. He said he felt blessed every day, and it showed by how happy he was. He loved his church family and really looked forward to his men's bible study group that he attended twice a week. He touched so many lives with his time on earth. Most would see him in his spare time walking the isles at HEB or Walmart just talking to people. Or others would see him helping pass out food at the Harvest house, or just lending a helping hand to anyone in need. Our hearts are broken, and he will truly be missed but we know he is rejoicing with the Lord and enjoying a bag of popcorn.

Survivors include daughters Crystal Baker (Bryan) and Tiffany Bradford; sons Marty Van Dyke and Jim Bob Van Dyke; sister Sandra Hayes (Billy); brothers Mickey Van Dyke and Roger Van Dyke; the mother of his children Sharon Rather (Eddie “Griz”) and grandchildren Brett Baker, Brock Van Dyke, Emma Baker, Peyton Van Dyke and Caden Bradford.

Lane Par Due officiating.  Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.  Pallbearers will be Jim Bob Van Dyke, Marty Van Dyke, Eddie “Griz” Rather, Brock Van Dyke, Brett Baker, Mickey Van Dyke, Crystal Baker and Bryan Baker.

 Joseph “Joe” L Vignali

September 8, 1956 - October 16, 2021

Joe Louis Vignali. Husband, Father, Brother, and Friend gave up his earthly duties and moved on to his eternal home Oct 16, 2021.  His wife Lynne, daughters Jessica and Krystal, and brother Jerry were at his side.  His abrupt departure, after a four year well fought battle against a relentless cancer, happened too soon and his presence in our lives is sorely missed.

When Joe was born, Sept 08, 1956, into the family of Fred and Therese Vignali he was welcomed by seven brothers and sisters, born over a period of almost 10 years: Cathy, Chris, Cindy, Jim, Jerry, John, and Paul.  Joe was a gift to his mother after the death of Paul in 1955 and quickly became a welcoming bright ray of light for her. His older sisters by turn were regularly tasked by Mom with watching him.  To be sure, he kept them on the run and they still say he was the cutest little fellow you could ever imagine.

He grew up as the youngest member of a loud, boisterous, tumultuous family that yelled argued, celebrated, played, and rejoiced at elevated levels.  Perhaps this affected Joe, causing him to mature into a man that was content to just observe and listen to those around him, rarely offering remarks or loud comments and when he did, they added value to a conversation. In all of his years when he joined in the discourse of politics, religion, or of life in general he seldom offered any comments other than to smile, give a soft chuckle and say a single word, “Yup”.  Rarely did Joe have a bad word or comment about anybody. I always thought of him as the “Quiet Man”. He seemed most content to remain in the background, not seeking attention, never asking for much, a gentle soul within our family.

When Joe finished high school, he followed the family tradition of working at the local lumber mill for a time, and then enlisted in the US Navy where he served a full term with over 3 years aboard the USS Independence, CV62 based in Norfolk, VA.  Though the hours were long and the work draining he managed to spend shore leave at some of the European countries including his Grandparents’ ancestral home country of Italy. He was honorably discharged in April of 1980. He returned to Libby Montana and resumed working at the local Champion Lumber mill.

He worked at Champion Libby MT on the Green Chain and as Edger Operator (1975-1993) before and after his Military Service and at Barrick Gold Mines Elko NV Heavy Equipment Operator (1994-2019).

During the years he was married to Roxanne, he became a stepfather to David Hopper, and a father to Jessica and Krystal Vignali, who he loved completely and supported throughout their childhoods and into their adult lives with his tireless manual labor career.

God brought Joe and Lynne together as one in marriage on May 23, 2012, culminating in a beautiful union of just over 10 years altogether.  Joe retired in 2019 and moved to Texas to be closer to family and medical facilities.

Joe Vignali. One of the toughest people his family and friends ever knew.  He never complained about the illness he fought. When asked about how he was doing he’d just smile and say “I’m feelin’ pretty good. How are you doing?” In one of his last conversations with family they became overwhelmed and could not talk when he said he was going to go into Hospice. True to his nature, and the only time he was ever heard to cry, he comforted and cried for family but not for himself. We all miss you, Joe.

And so our little brother, with your beautiful, gentle soul, the privilege and the pleasure’s been all ours, to have you in our lives and hold you in our hearts. Soar free now in that beauty and grace where you now reside. Loving you now and forever.

Joe is survived by his wife, Anita Lynne, at Blessing, TX; two daughters, Jessica Marie Vignali (Nicole) Moya of Burbank, CA and Krystal Jo Vignali of Sanford, NC; stepson David (Brie) Hopper of Spokane Valley, WA sisters Cathy Prichard of Liberty Lake, WA, Chris (Steve) Moon of Post Falls, ID, and Cindy (Jim) Sutherland of Libby, MT; three brothers, Jim (D.D.) Vignali of Bogata TX, Jerry (Sharon) Vignali of Corvallis, OR, and John (Annie) Vignali of Libby, MT; Uncle Emil Vignali of Libby, MT, Aunt Margie Lambert of Surprise, AZ. Ten nieces and nephews as well as grand-nieces and nephews on the Vignali side; On Joe’s wife side of the family, Stepchildren: Tonia (Michael) Johnson, Winnemucca, NV, Timothy (Shausty) Timko , Cypress, TX, & Michael (Lori) Timko of Winnemucca, NV. Lynn’s brother Arthur (Connie) Lewis of Old Lyme, CT and Andra Lewis of Baytown, TX, fourteen step grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and twelve nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Therese Vignali, his infant brother, Paul, and his niece, Makayla Vignali and brother-in-law, Bill Lewis.

A memorial service will be held in Joe’s honor in the spring of 2022 in Libby, MT.
