Armando “Mando” Tabares, 60, of Van Vleck was born in Brownsville, TX on April 22, 1960 to Alberto & Paula (Davila) Tabares. Mando was a man of many titles, including beloved husband, dad, son, brother, “welo”, brother-in-law, father-in-law, uncle, and friend of many. After a courageous battle with COVID-19, Mando left his earthly body on April 5, 2021 to walk in heaven with the Lord. If you were listening closely at just the right moment, you may have heard the tell-tale “slap” of his chanclas as he walked through heaven’s gates. Mando loved life, never met a stranger, and will long be remembered for his quick wit, bright smile, infectious laugh, and endless jokes (most of which were usually inappropriate). The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Mando, and he loved spending time with his family and friends. He took great pride in the 42 years that he spent hauling loads across the country in his 18-wheeler, but his most proud achievement in life was marrying the love of his life, Dorene, and raising their 4 sons, Mando Jr, Ernie, Robert, and Charlie. Mando spent countless hours coaching his sons’ various sports teams when they were young, and could always be found cheering them on from the sidelines as they grew older. As a father of 4 boys, Mando loved coaching and watching all sports, and he became somewhat of a “surrogate” father to many of his sons’ friends & teammates. Mando touched many lives and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Mando was preceded in death by his mother, Paula Davila Tabares. He is survived by his father, Alberto Tabares; his best friend and wife of 41 years, Dorene; sons Armando “Mando” Tabares Jr (Sarah), Manuel “Ernie” Tabares (Samantha), Robert Tabares (Elizabeth), and Charles “Charlie” Tabares; sisters Mary Alcala (Luis) & Aida Libby (Daniel); brothers Alberto “Albert” Tabares, Arnulfo “Arnold” Tabares, & Alejandro “Alex” Tabares (Tommie); grandchildren Cassidy, Krislyn, Keara, Jasmine, Faith, Jacob, Layton, Josiah, Leila, Tobey, Camryn, Jordyn, Taylor, Bodhi, & Rowdy; as well as numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many other family members. Services will be held at The Power Church in Bay City (3920 Doris Street) on Monday, April 12, 2021, with visitation from 9:00-10:00 AM. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM with Pastor Frank Paz officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. Pallbearers will be Mando Tabares Jr., Ernie Tabares, Robert Tabares, Charlie Tabares, Alex Tabares Jr., and Josh Cervantes. Honorary pallbearers will be Alex Tabares, Arnold Tabares, Albert Tabares, Adam Dickerson, Dillon Hadash, Jonathan Woods, Earnest Pena, and Tobey Yates. The family would like to extend a special heartfelt thank you to all of the doctors, nurses, and every single staff member who had any part in providing care to Mando while he was admitted at The Sugar Land Methodist Brazos ICU. We are eternally grateful for the loving care & concern that you all extended to both Mando and his family during this most difficult time. Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Photo courtesy of Faye Cunningham

Laura Elizabeth Trull
Shiflett Tate was born to Bruce Winfred (B .W.) and Florence
Margaret Roberson Trull on January 29, 1927, in Midfield, TX.,
and grew up in Palacios. She died November 17, 2021. Known as
Lolly growing up and well into adulthood, she was little sister
to Jean, Bob, Carl and Gladys who were major influences in her
life. Following in her siblings' footsteps, she attended the
University of Texas, graduating in 1947 She later received her
master's degree in counseling from Catholic University in
Washington D.C., and continued her education, official and
unofficial, throughout her life. In the 1960's, when Laura and Bill decided to adopt a daughter, as part of living their faith they chose an older child—age 8—, because adoptive parents are hard to find for older children, and were blessed by that decision. In her 80's, Laura was charged with welcoming new folks to her senior living residence and in that role met all the new people. One new fellow caught her eye and she invited him to her Bible Study group. Love blossomed, and Laura (85) and Nahum Tate (89) married in 2012. Their shared joy over the next five years was a delight to all who knew them. When Laura was 14, her beloved brother Carl Roberson Trull died of complications of TB. Also preceding her in death were her parents; husbands Bill Shiflett and Nahum Tate; son Robert Carl Shiflett; and siblings Jean T. Herlin, Gladys T. Brooking and Robert Bruce (R.B.) Trull. She is survived by her daughter Debra Elaine Beaty, son James Trull Shiflett, six grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, stepdaughter Junifer Tate Smith and numerous nieces and nephews. For the last decade of her life, Laura was blessed with the friendship of Rosemary Williams, her church family and her devoted caregiver and friend Ramona Lamas. Elaine Marie Carson Treybig was born May 11, 1928 to Samuel and Lydia Carson in Luling, TX and departed her earthly home on November 30, 2020 at the age of 92. She was preceded in death by all 4 of her daughters Susan Nell Rawlings, Sally Doreen Aaron, Joan Lorraine Starnes and just a year ago her first born Lydia Catherine Treybig as well as her granddaughter Susan Sterling. Her mother died shortly after her birth and she was 12 when her father remarried. After that she was essentially orphaned, but a distant cousin Katherine Davis took her in and she lived with her until she graduated high school at 17. Upon graduation she packed her suitcase and went to Georgetown, TX to attend Southwestern University. She told the Dean, “I want an education but I don’t have any money, but I will work.” She was enrolled that day and received her bachelors in Education around 1950 and began her career as a teacher in El Campo, finishing her career at Linnie Roberts in Bay City. She married Ernest H. Treybig on May 31, 1953 and they had six children, first 4 daughters and then 2 sons. After less than 15 years of marriage, Harold was in a horrible wreck driving an oil truck for Layne Drilling. He survived but was never the same due to serious brain injuries, so at age 33 she became for all intents and purposes, a single mother of 6 children. She worked 4 jobs at a time and when she retired from teaching in the early 80’s she paid her last payment to Georgetown University and was a proud Alum from then on. She then embarked on her next chapter, moved to Matagorda and began running Rawlings Bait Camp. After almost a decade, she and her first born son Buddy opened C & R Seafood and Bait at the drawbridge where she remained until the new bridge came in. By that time, she was well on her way to the next chapter when at 72 years old she became a paramedic. When she could no longer do that, she helped to found the Latch Key Children with the Matagorda United Methodist Church for children whose parents worked and couldn’t be there when the kids got home from school. A life-long Methodist, she embodied the principals of Christianity and “Love your neighbor as yourself” in her actions. Many times she would give a total stranger, a mother and children or some broke down fisherman, the keys to her truck, a signed check or cash to fix whatever crisis they were in and more than once her kids would say she’d never see that again. But just like her faith in God, her faith in man was rewarded time and again when they’d bring her car back or sometimes months later a letter with a check, thanking her for her kindness. She never complained about her life and if anyone around her did, she would simply start singing, “ Count Your Blessings, name them one by one…Count your Blessings see what God has done”…, or tell you to “brighten the corner where you’re at”. She used the hymns humorously too. When her children would get up after sleeping in, they were serenaded with “Christ our Lord has ‘risen today. Hallelujah!” This extraordinary woman lived life to the fullest. She loved and supported her children and their children and on and on. She worked hard and ran several successful businesses and selflessly served her community and her church in so many ways. She will be greatly missed but she lived a full life and embraced life in a way that somehow makes her passing less sad. We celebrate Granny Treybig, as she was known to pretty much everyone, and are so grateful we had her as long as we did. She is survived by her son Buddy and wife Gina Treybig, son Carson Treybig, all of Matagorda who were her faithful and loving primary caregivers in her later years. Grandchildren Chris Wilson, April Deadrich (Ryan), Katie Sterling (Chris), David Sterling, DeWalt Owens, John Rawlings, Jr., Steven Rawlings (Nadine), Angela Baker (Greg), Trey Treybig (Emily), Tyler Treybig (Christina), Annette Williams (Aaron), Marty Warnick (Nikki), Robert Warnick (Ashley), Nancy Slotman (Andy) and Katie Aaron and many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Due to limited space, her funeral service will be for family members only. There will be an opportunity for you to pay your final respects at 10:45 AM Saturday, December 5, 2020 at the Matagorda United Methodist Church after her family exits. Graveside services will follow at the Matagorda Cemetery.
