Funeral services for Esther Schilling, 79, of Palacios, were held April 25, 1991 at the Restlawn Cemetery chapel in Harlingen with Rev. Larry Hunter of Oklahoma and Rev. R. H. Zumalt of Bay City officiating. Burial was in Restlawn Cemetery. Born April 5, 1912 to Will and Maude Fulgham Anderson in Bellingham, Wash., Mrs. Schilling died April 23, 1991 at Wagner General Hospital in Palacios. A former resident of Harlingen for 40 years, she had lived in Mustang, Okla. for six years and had been a resident of Palacios for the past five months. Mrs. Schilling was a retired school teacher who began her teaching career in Turtle Bay near Palacios in the early 1940's. She was an elementary teacher in Harlingen for 25 years. She was a member of the Nazarene Church. She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Fraley of Westminster, Colo.; sister, Ruth Jendry of Palacios; four grandchildren, Deborah Fraley Fletcher of Oklahoma City, Denise Fraley of Oklahoma City, and Jonathan Fraley and Dana Fraley, both of Westminster, Colo.; and one great-grandchild, Laci Fletcher of Oklahoma City. Donations may be made to the Pink Ladies Auxiliary at Wagner General Hospital.

Palacios—Jesse “Polly” Schumaker, 63, of Palacios died Monday, Sept. 4, 2006. She was born Nov. 13, 1942, in Port Lavaca to the late Jack D. and Wheelie Ray Garbe. She was a homemaker and a volunteer at the Food Pantry in Palacios. Survivor: sons, Ronald Schumaker of Victoria and Donald Schumaker of Lolita; sister, Jacque Garbe of Palacios; and three grandchildren. Funeral service for Marian T. Selkirk, 75, of Bay City will be held 11 am Tuesday at the Bay City Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hugh B. Jones Jr. of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church officiating. Burial followed services at Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck. Mrs. Selkirk was born Jan. 20, 1915, to Ebonezer and Lenora Hand Trout in Cape May, J. J. and died Dec 16, 1990, at her home. She was a member of the 100 Club and a 51-year resident of Bay City. Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Dr. Roberto Rangel; two brothers, Harold and Warren Trout of New Jersey; two nephews, Paul Rangel of Houston and John Trout of Washington; three nieces, Sylvia Stowe of Austin, Ann Marie Rangel of Houston and Laura Lumkin of Fort Worth; and one sister-in-law, Adeliade Secretan of Bay City. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Selkirk, in 1973. Services are under the direction of Dick R. Elkins of Bay City Funeral Home.

Jerome Harry Senkyrik, 60, of the Cedar Lane community, died at 2:30 pm Thursday [May 19, 1981] at his residence. A farmer, Mr. Senkyrik was born June 5, 1920, in El Campo. Funeral services are tentatively scheduled for Saturday morning at Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. Charles Sonnier officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck. A rosary will be held Friday night at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Anita Marie Senkyrik of Cedar Lane; a son, Mark J. James Clifton Sewell, 92, of Hasema, Texas went to be with the Lord on November 6, 2018. He was born May 18, 1926 in Hasema, Texas to William Clifton Sewell and Tennie Lucille Richardson. James served in Germany during World War II as a combat engineer constructing bridges to allow access for allied troops. After serving in the war, he returned home and married his beloved wife Ora Lee Coston Sewell in 1946. He worked as a bridge and building foreman for the Missouri Pacific Railroad that later became Union Pacific Railroad. He retired with Union Pacific Railroad in 1988 after 38 years of service. He enjoyed his retirement by spending time with his grandchildren, camping with family, and growing vast gardens. In the early 1990's, he started the Buckscuffle Delta sugar cane mill with help of family and friends which was in operation until 1996. In his later years, he enjoyed raising cattle and sharing his vast amount of knowledge with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. James is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Ora Lee Coston Sewell; parents William C. Sewell and Tennie L. Richardson; brother Ernest "Bud" Sewell; daughter and son in law Peggy and Jimmy Walker; son in law Vance Lesikar, and grandson Gary Lesikar. He is survived by his daughter Carolyn Lesikar and son James Glenn Sewell (Brenda). Grandchildren Ginny Lesikar, Jason Sewell (Allison), Kody Sewell (Katherine), and Brandi Sewell. Great grandchildren Jackson Sewell, Kooper Sewell, and Kaden Sewell. The family will receive visitors 5:00-7:00pm Thursday, November 8 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Lloyd Shoppa, 86, died peacefully Monday, February 11, 2019, surrounded by his family. He was born August 31, 1932 to Adolph and Christina Shoppa on a farm in Wharton, Texas. While at Wharton High School, he played on the 1950 State Football Championship team, starting on both offense and defense. He was captain of the basketball team and went to the State Championship in track his junior year. He also played trombone in the high school band. He loved to hunt and fish, skills he learned as a Boy Scout. He attended Wharton County Junior College on a football scholarship and later attended and graduated from The University of Texas. His professional career started as a part-time employee at Western Auto Store in Austin. He was a member of the Sigma Iota Epsilon National Honorary and Professional Management Fraternity and president of Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity. Lloyd married the love of his life, childhood sweetheart Betty Jean Ziober, on January 25, 1955. After graduating from UT, Lloyd accepted a job in process improvement with Texaco. In 1964, he started his 34-year career at Bell Helicopter as a systems engineer. Lloyd served in several capacities, including president of Bell Helicopter Textron Canada and eventually president and CEO of Bell Helicopter Textron until retirement. Thanks in part to his career, Lloyd and Betty traveled around the world, visiting 64 countries. Throughout these years, Lloyd supported his children in their lives and in their business endeavors, becoming Chairman and Director of Shoppa’s Farm Supply, a John Deere dealership with eight locations on the upper Gulf Coast, owned by his son, Chris Shoppa, and Chairman of Shoppa’s Material Handling, a Toyota Industrial Equipment distributor with nine locations, owned by his son, Jim Shoppa. In 1997, Lloyd was honored by being inducted into the National Management Association Hall of Fame in recognition of significant personal and professional contributions to the development of management and leadership. Lloyd was a member of First Baptist Church of Euless. He was active in civic affairs, president of the Hurst-Euless-Bedford School Board and its Chamber of Commerce. He served on the board of directors for Texas Commerce Bank and Chase Bank and was on the Capital Farm Credit Board. His family was the center of his life. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty; their children, Jim and Janie Shoppa, Chris and Laura Shoppa, Gail and Larry McClure, and Debra and Garland Hill; grandchildren, Clayton Shoppa and Mary Hiebert, Preston and Kimber Shoppa, Kristin Shoppa, Mackenzie and Preston Moore, Madison and Dietrich Davis, Will and Caroline Shoppa, Christina and Danny Driskell, Erica Hill, Tara and Martin Spencer and Scott McClure and Caroline Solari, nine great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley Swinford; and many loving nieces and nephews. Visitation is slated for Thursday, February 14 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home, 5725 Colleyville Blvd, Colleyville, Texas 76034; with church service scheduled for Friday, February 15, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Cross City Church First Euless, 1000 Airport Freeway, Euless, Texas 76039. Shanna was born in Travis County, to Walter and Evelyn Skutca on August 13, 1973. She attended public schools in Tidehaven ISD and later attended Wharton County Junior College. Shanna was a great person with a heart of gold, she loved fishing, loved collecting shells, and loved antique items. She is survived by her parents, Walter and Evelyn Skutca; three loving sons, Erskine Davis, Jr., Trayln Davis, and Darren Davis; good friend, Stacey Collins; and a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends. K. Wortham Smith passed away after a long battle with pancreatic cancer on October 6th 2018. Wortham was born in Bay City, Texas on March 21, 1939. He graduated from Bay City High School and the University of the South, Sewanee, Tenn. He was a commercial real estate broker for many years in Tulsa, OK., Houston, TX. and Marshfield, MA. Wortham is preceded in death by his mother, Helen Wilson Hawkins. He is survived by his wife, Lynn Goza Smith, brother Paris Eugene Smith of Alkmaar, Holland, son Clark W. Smith of Annapolis, MD., daughter Allison Smith Estelle, husband Stephen Estelle,and their son Graham Estelle of Bozeman, MT. He also leaves his close, long-time friends Karl and Florence Jamail of Houston, and sister-in-law Nancy Goza Graham and husband John Graham of Flower Mound, TX. Tommie Marie Cavit Smith the second of ten children, the daughter of Ulas Cavit and Tommie Lee Lowe was born in Wharton, TX on Monday, January 1, 1951. She shared her upbringing with family and friends and was known throughout life affectionately as “Aunt Tommie”. Tommie accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at New Hope Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend E. F. Rayford. Later she united with Evangelist Temple Church of God in Christ under the leadership of the late Elder Doyle Anderson. Throughout life she held firm to her hope and belief in Christ and continued to keep the faith. Tommie was united in holy matrimony to Lourrell Smith on March 23, 1969. A loving daughter, granddaughter, mother, sister, aunt, niece, and friend were just a few of her distinguishing qualities which made up her beautiful life. By her demise she will be greatly missed. Her transition from this life to eternal life was Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 68 years 25 days. Her loving and caring family she leaves includes three sons, Bryan Holmes (Daria) of Arizona, Jermaine and Jeremy Smith (Ebony) of Bay City; four sisters, Lora Johnson of Marianna Arkansas, Mary Jones, Nina George (Roosevelt) both of Bay City, Texas, and Linda Parks of Houston, TX; five brothers, Ulas Parks of Peterborough, Cambridge England; Tony Cavit of Bay City, TX, Charlie Armstrong (Sonja) of Dale City, VA, Clement Norris (Barbara) of Kilgore, TX, and Iris Norris of Fort Worth, TX; a special friend, A. J. Brown; eight grandchildren, five aunts, four uncles, twelve nieces, ten nephews, ten great-nephews, nine great-nieces and a countless family of cousins, other relatives, and many many friends.

Ray Smithey, 59, of Bay City, Texas passed away February 13, 2019. He was born July 18, 1959 in Commerce, Texas, to the late James Wilburn Smithey and Betty Jean Wilson Smithey. Ray was a big man with an even bigger heart. He was a dedicated coach, and always involved in Nikki’s endeavors. He was a beloved member of the community, and cherished his work with the Champion Riders Mounted Drill Team. He touched many lives, and will be missed. Survivors include daughter, Rebecca “Nikki” Smithey of Bay City; step-daughter, Amy Grimes of Bay City; step-sons, Jonathan Varnell and wife Angela, and Eric Varnell and wife Sonja, all of Louisiana; grandchildren, Erica Grimes, Reese Miller, Slade Varnell, Sarah Dodd and Aiden Varnell; aunt, Christine Clark; uncle, Gerald Smithey; and numerous cousins and other extended family members. Blessing—Joe Soto, 82, of Blessing and formerly of Edna, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999. He was born March 27, 1917, in Thomaston, to the late Alcario and Louisa Holquin Soto. He was a retired laborer and was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. Jean Anne Watkins Sparks, our beloved mother, mother-in-law, sister and grandma, passed from this life in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Sunday, January 6, 2019 at the age of 78. She was born on October 16, 1940 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Alvin Taylor Watkins and Katie Irene (Smith) Watkins. She was a graduate of Muskogee High School and attended Bacone college. Jean spent most of her life making a home for her two daughters. She was a strong believer in our Lord and maintained faith, considering herself blessed. She made friends easily and was gracious in giving to others. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her daughters, Kristen Vedder and Susan Robb and husband Jeff Robb; her beloved sister Jan Reddoch and husband Jim Reddoch; her grandsons Austin Vedder and Alec Vedder; her niece Pamela Blades; nephew Phillip Fisher II and wife Linda Fisher; great nieces and nephews and cousins. Mona Christine “Chrissy” Stavinoha, 58, of Pledger ,Tx passed away October 16, 2018. She was born October 21, 1959 in Wharton, TX to the late Willis Marion Sherrill and Annie Estella Balusek Sherrill. Mona married the love of her life Tim Stavinoha on August 12, 1978 and they had one child Amy Stavinoha Benavides. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Jimmy Jenkins. Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Tim Stavinoha; daughter Amy Jo Benavides (Tommy); brothers Buddy Sherrill (Kathy) and Alan Sherrill (Margaret) and her grandchildren Miracle Annie Benavides and Grant “Buster” Benavides. She was a graduate of Boling High School and attended Lamar University where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Education. Her love of teaching lasted 30 years. The apple of her eye were her two precious grandchildren, Miracle and Buster with whom she was dedicated in every aspects of their lives, from Annie's Cheer and Dance to Buster’s Soccer and Karate. Mrs. Stieber, a resident of Lolita, passed away from a heart condition on June 24. She was born July 8, 1877 in Ammonsville, Texas, and formerly lived in Fayette. She had resided in this county the past 10 years. Survivors are four daughters, Mary Kocian of Lolita, Betty Dornak of Bay City, Martha Vacek of Rosenberg and Eva Stieber of Moulton; two sons, Richard of Schulenburg and Theofielf of Rosenberg.

Mesquite, Texas, Sept. 4—John A. Sumrall, retired Mesquite railroad engineer, died Tuesday in a Dallas hospital after a 3-month illness. Sumrall was born in Gulfport, Miss., and moved at an early age to Hattiesburg, Miss. He moved to Matagorda, Texas, fifteen years ago and came here seven years later. He was a member of Matagorda Masonic Lodge in Matagorda and the Gaston Avenue Baptist Church in Dallas. Surviving are his wife, and two daughters, Miss Nancy Sumrall and Miss Mary Sumrall, all of Mesquite; a son, Angus Sumrall of Toronto, Canada; a brother, Ernest Sumrall of Bogalusa, La.; and five sisters, Mrs. Pearl Ainsworth, Mrs. Carrie Bankston, Mrs. Lena McElveen, Mrs. May Wilson and Mrs. Lucy Burt, all of Bogalusa. Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Wednesday in the Anderson Clayton Chapel here. The Rev. Charles Workman will officiate. Burial will be in Long Creek Cemetery near Mesquite.
