JOSE B. SAINZ

PALACIOS - Jose B. Sainz, 90, of Palacios, passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2012. He was born Dec. 18, 1921 in La Mesa, N.M. to the late Quirino and Grabiela Benavidez Sainz. He served in the United States Army during World War II, was retired from Alcoa, and was a Catholic.

He is survived by his daughters, Erlinda Welch (David) of Amarillo, Olga Hill (Larry E.) of Odessa, Lucinda Garcia of San Antonio, and Otilia Vargas of Palacios; sister, Rita Sahagian of Fresno, Calif.; brother, Felix Sainz of Glendale, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lucia Garcia Sainz; sons, Joe John Sainz and Albert Sainz; 6 brothers; 3 sisters; and his great-grandson, Shane Myers.

Visitation will be from 8 - 9:30 a.m. with Rosary at 9:30 a.m. and Funeral Mass beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 30, 2012 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Palacios.

Military services to be held by Veterans of Foreign Wars Queens Hamlin Post# 2467 from Palacios. Burial at Palacios Cemetery.

Pallbearers: Tyler Sainz, Blake Sainz, Danny Sainz, Ramon Rodriguez, Rogelio Gonzalez, and John Lopez.

Angie Garza Samora

PALACIOS - Angie Garza Samora, 76, of Palacios, passed away on Saturday, June 23, 2012. She was born Jan. 14, 1936 in Charco to the late Andres and Maria Garza. She was a homemaker and a Catholic.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Pete Samora Jr. of Palacios; daughters, Bonnie Navarro of Mineral Wells, Vilda Morin of Palacios, Cindy Samora Lopez of Palacios, Sandra Samora of Palacios, and Candy Samora Luna of Palacios; son, Randy Samora of Houston; sisters, Genoveva Estrello of Palacios, Rebecca Garza of Houston, Lucy Sanchez of Houston, Teresa Avalos of Houston; brothers, Andres Garza of Mathis and Albert Garza of Sugar Land; 19 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Yolanda Rodriguez, Rosalie Garza, and Evangelina Garcia; and brother, Cesario Garza.

Visitation will be 5 - 7 p.m. with Rosary recited at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Palacios. Visitation will resume from 9 - 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 with funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Palacios, with Fr. Bryan Heyer officiating. Burial will follow at Palacios Cemetery.

PALACIOS - Francis "Pancha" Alicia Sanchez, 32, of Palacios, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012. She was born August 8, 1979, in Palacios to Beatrice Perez Sanchez of Palacios and the late Mario Sanchez Sr. She was a Christian and an operator at Inteplast.

She is survived by her 2 daughters, Jaelyn Dahl Washington and Alexandria Samantha Ceasar, both of Palacios; 1 son, Sherwin Dione Ceasar Jr.; 3 sisters, Naomi T. Sanchez and husband Matthew Ortiz Sr. of Palacios, Trina M. Sanchez of Palacios, Beatrice J. Sanchez and husband Gabriel Zarate of Palacios; 1 brother, Mario Sanchez Jr. of Palacios and David A. Sanchez and wife Rebecca De Los Santos of Bay City.

Visitation will be held Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, after 5 p.m. at The Living Word Church, corner of 12th and Henderson Sts. Prayer service will be held Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, 7 p.m. at The Living Word Church. Visitation will resume Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, from 1 p.m. till 2 p.m. at The Living Word Church. February 19, 1975 - December 22, 2019

John Anthony "Johnny" Sanchez, 44 of Bay City, TX passed away from his earthly journey into eternal glory on Saturday December 22nd, 2019 surrounded by his family.

Johnny was born February 19th, 1975 in Bay City, TX to the late Efrain & Rosario Sanchez

Johnny is survived by his sister Rosa and brother in law Jose Forcado of Bay City, brother Albert Sanchez and wife Charlene of Houston, TX, Brother Efrain Sanchez Jr of Bay City, Brother Jesse Sanchez and wife Amy of Freeport, TX; Nieces and nephews Gina Solis, Jesus J Sanchez II, Linda Solis, Nicholas Sanchez, Briana Chavez & husband Daniel, Christian Sanchez, Victoria Sanchez, Isaiah Sanchez As well as great nieces and nephews Hector Guevara, Noe Guevara, Elayna Cotero, Jessie Cortez, Daniel Chavez Jr, Eli Chavez, Dominic Ortiz.

Johnny was a member of Bay City Baptist Church where he had attended since a small child. He was employed with Bay City Recycling Center where he enjoyed making a positive impact in the community and was loved by everyone he interacted with.

Visitation will be at 1 PM followed by funeral services at 2 PM on Friday December 27th, 2019 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City, TX with Pastor Lee Watson officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck, TX.  Pallbearers will be Jesse Sanchez, Jesus J Sanchez II, Nicholas Sanchez, Christian Sanchez, Jose Forcado, Daniel Chavez.

Johnny was a caring, funny, and charismatic person; in continuance of his death, he gave the gift of organ, eye, and tissue donation.

Pauline Schulte, 81, of Bay City passed away February 2, 2012. She was born February 4, 1930 in Alberta, Canada to the late Joseph Francis Roneche & Mildred Marie Mill Roneche.

Survivors include her husband Winston Hugo Schulte of Bay City; daughter Georgia Keane & husband Mike of Bangkok; sons Robert York Schulte of Houston & Bruce Schulte & wife Caroline of Katy; brother John Roneche of Canada; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Nov. 23, 1936 – Aug. 7, 2012

Margaret (Tibby) Joan Janise Schurtz of Tres Palacios Oaks passed away Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012 evening at the Kindred Unit in DeTar Hospital in Victoria, Texas.

She fought a long and hard battle and is now resting in Heaven.

She was born November 23, 1936 in Bay City to Henry Jesse and Agnes Mae Janise. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

She is survived by: her husband Carl Schurtz of Tres Palacios Oaks; children, Carl Henry Schurtz, Pam Kamman (and Doug) and Sue Meyers all of Tres Palacios Oaks, Carla Faye Schurtz of Kyle, Texas, Joel Schurtz (and Dolores) of Bay City, Cheryl Ann Marler (and Alton) of Sheridan, Arkansas; sisters, Eunice (Nunu) Rouse (and Melvin) of Bay City, Faye Rush of Edna; brother, Henry Janise of Evansville, Indiana; grandchildren, Jessica Beth Schurtz, Jerimy Polensky (and Brandy), Torie Malone (and Pewee), Allen Polensky; Adrienne Meyers, Amy Meyers, Misti Meyers, Jodi Schurtz Rabun (and Patrick), Ashley Rene Schurtz, Ali Schurtz, Joel Schurtz (and Ashley), Amber Charles, Amanda Charles, Toni Kibler (and Jeff), Tracy Terrell; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Agnes Janise and two sisters, Lou Sachtleben and Barbara Brown.

She will be deeply missed.

Clyde Nelo Seaman
(June 10, 1936 - April 5, 2012)

Clyde Nelo Seaman, passed away suddenly on Thursday, April 5, 2012. Nelo, age 75, was born June 10, 1936, in Bayou LaBatre, Alabama to the late Otis Roy (Tody) and Viola Clyde (Steiner) Seaman.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Virginia Mae Zapalac; three sons Garry and wife Pam; Greg and wife Sherri; daughter-in-law Becky Seaman Garcia all of Palacios, Larry and wife Dessy of Conroe; one daughter Lauri Ann Perrone and husband Chuck of Pearland; 11 grandchildren, J.N., J.R., Jennifer, Michael, Matthew, Daphni, Tiffany, Brittany, Kyle, Zachary, and Nicholas; and 8 great-grand children. He is also survived bv numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Nelo was preceded in death by his son Otis Roy; sister Viola Regina; brother, William Otis and sister-in-law Thelma.

Nelo was a commercial fisherman his entire life. His family moved to Palacios in 1945 because the waters were great for shrimp, oysters, and fish. Besides his grandchildren, his pride and joy was the “Sea Gull,” the boat he inherited which was built by his grandfather in 1926. Nelo used the “Sea Gull” for commercial fishing until he took a management position at Gold Coast Seafood. He received the Palacios Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Marine Related Individual award in 1984. He was actively involved in the Matagorda County Marine Advisory Committee serving as chairman from 1977- 1986. He received the Service to Seafood Award for his dedicated leadership. As a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Palacios, his family helped with the annual Shrimporee and Blessing of the Fleet. On many occasions, the “Sea Gull” had the honor of carrying the priest as he blessed the boats.

To know Nelo was to know a compassionate and generous man. He will be missed by so many. Nelo was a true icon in the seafood industry.

Visitation will be at Palacios Funeral Home from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10 and the rosary will be held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church at 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, April 11th at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 1004 Magnusson, Palacios with Father Brian Heyer and Father Gary Janak officiating. Graveside services will follow at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Blessing.

Serving the family as pallbearers are J. N. Seaman, J. R. Seaman, Chris Harvey, Kevin Harvey, Mark Bates, and Rudy Pena.

Mildred Tolbert Seifert
(November 23, 1921 - February 27, 2012)

Mildred Tolbert Seifert, 90, of Bay City, Texas passed away Monday, February 27, 2012 at Emeritus in Sugar Land, Texas. Mildred was born November 23, 1921 in Luling, Texas to Jesse A and Mary Agnes Tolbert. Mildred was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her family was blessed with her unconditional love. Mildred was an active member of Holy Cross Catholic Church where she was a member of the Catholic Daughters and the Altar Society. She was active in the Garden Club, where she held numerous offices and judged flower shows around the area. She loved playing Bridge with several bridge clubs in town. She belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution as well as the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

Mildred is survived by a son, Kenneth Seifert and wife Debbie Seifert of Pasadena, Texas; and two daughters, Kathy Griffith of Houston, Texas; and Ann Heil and husband Rick Heil of Richmond, Texas 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin “Buck” Seifert and her parents and two brothers, Arthur A. Tolbert, Jesse A Tolbert, and four sisters, Leatrice Schuessler, Beatrice Kuykendall, Agnes “Pally” Dixon and Dorothy Lee Harnden.

Family will receive friends from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM on Friday, March 2, 2012 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, with Rosary services at 6:30pm. The Mass will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, March 3, 2012 at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Greg Korenek officiating. Interment will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, March 3, 2012 at St. Joseph Cemetery, 605 Sheehan Street, Yoakum, Texas 77995, with Father Matthew Huehlefeld officiating. Agnes Elizabeth Sharp, 81, of Bay City passed from this life on May 15, 2012, in Winnie surrounded by her loving family.

Agnes was born to Clyde W. and Ella K. Cummings in Bay City on October 31, 1930.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 18, 2012 at Cedar Vale Cemetery in Bay City with Jerry Findley officiating.

Left to cherish her memory are: her sons, Harlan Walker and Bob Walker and wife, Lisa; her brother, Clyde Cummings; grandchildren, Megan, Misty, Tammy, Craig and Christopher; seven great-grandchildren, and her special friend, Jesse Findley.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Shirley Kay Shearer, 56, of Clute, passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at her residence.

She was born June 1, 1955, in Bay City, Texas, to Spergeon and Dorothy Barina Shearer.

She is survived by: her mother, Dorothy Young; sisters, Beverly Claybourn and husband Jon, Cecilia Studdard, Nancy Daniel and husband Greg; brother, Lee McKinney; nieces and nephews, Noble and Justin Blythe, Kasey and Katie Studdard, Gregory and Leslie Daniel; great-nieces and nephew, Maddison, Tristin and Jordan Blythe and Carrington Studdard.

She was preceded in death by: her father, Spergeon Whitfield Shearer; and brothers, Spergeon and Whitfield Shearer.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 7, 2012, at Stroud Funeral Home in Clute with the Fr. Jim Lynes and the Rev. John Huss officiating.

Burial will be at 2 p.m., Monday April 9, 2012, at Roselawn Cemetery in Van Vleck, Texas.

Wilma Brhlik Sherrill

Wilma Brhlik Sherrill, 88, died in Huntsville, Tx., on March 14, 2012. She was born Sept. 18, 1924 in Midfield, Tx., the older of two children of Frank Joseph Brhlik and Violet Aiken Brhlik.

Wilma is survived by her daughter, Anita Jeanne Natale and son in law Dick Natale; granddaughaters Lauren of The Woodlands, Whitney of Houston, and Lindsey Begland and husband Doug of Denver, Co., and 3 great granddaughters; plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Wesley Sherrill, son Lawrence Glen Sherrill, and brother Frank P. “Sonny” Brhik.

The funeral service was held March 18, 2012 at Huntsville United Methodist Church and buried next to her husband and son in Oakwood Cemetery in Huntsville, Tx.

Jimmy Charles Shimek
(October 13, 1945 - March 29, 2012)

Jimmy Charles Shimek, 66, of Bay City passed away Thursday, March 29, 2012. He was born October 13, 1945 in Houston to the late Charlie & Cecilia Shimek. Jimmy moved to Bay City in 1967 to begin working at Celanese. He has since retired. Jimmy loved his family and was a kind and generous person to all. He always loved to laugh. Jimmy was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. Many will miss him.

Jimmy is survived by his wife of 46 years: Linda Humphrey Shimek of Bay City; their 2 children: Michael & Kim Shimek of Bay City and Tina & Craig Slaughter of Palacios; 6 grandchildren: Amber and John Michael Shimek, Chelsea, Caitlyn, Cameron, and Cade Slaughter; and 3 sisters: Charlene & John Boriskie, Shirley & Homer Becher, and Terry & Charles Westbrook. He was preceded in death by his parents: Charlie & Cecilia Shimek.

A rosary will be recited 7:00 PM Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. A mass will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Greg Korenek officiating. Interment will follow at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Blessing. David Floyd Sifford, 59, of Angleton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eldon and Geraldine Sifford, sister, Joyce Zapalac, brother Robert Sifford and son-in-law Keith Flowers.

Funeral services for George Smith, 68, of Bay City, Texas, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Bay City with the Rev. L. C. Cunningham Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at East View Cemetery in Bay City.

Mr. Smith will lie in state Wednesday at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church from noon until 1 p.m. Visitation will be Tuesday from noon until 9 p.m. at Green's Mortuary.

On October 4, 1931, a baby boy was born to Roy Smith and Laura Jones Smith in Bay City. George passed away September 31, 2000 at his residence. He graduated from Hilliard High School in Bay City and attended Prairie View College. He was enlisted in the U.S. Navy for 20 years. He was a Korean Veteran with duties in six countries. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was employed with the Bay City Independent School District for 19 years.

He is survived by two sons, Pastor Hughley McClinton and wife Cassandra of Milwaukee, Wis., and George S. Miller of Bay City; five daughters, Shelia G. Thomas and Leonard of Texarkana, Texas, Gloria A. Smith, Joice E. Smith, Robbin S. Bryant and Kimberly Bonner and James, all of Houston; a sister, Joyce Adams of Jose, Calif.; three sisters-in-law, Phyllis Royster of Houston, Thelma Reeves and Doris Royster of Bay City; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild; special friends, Mary E. Smith, Vivian Mims, and Tommy L. Castilow, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Smith was preceded in death by his parents and brother.

Active pallbearers will be Jeffrey Royster, Clinton Barnes, Thomas Englehardt, Romale Green, Frederick Woodard, James Bonner, Nathaniel Moore, Ed Ash. Honorary pallbearers will be Pastor Hughley McClinton, Brandon Bryant, Tommy L. Castilow, George S. Miller, and Tramale Green.

Mike Smith

Funeral services for Mike Smith, 91, of Bay City will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000 at Mother Zion Baptist Church in Bay City with Rev. K. J. Griggs officiating. Burial will follow at East View Cemetery in Bay City.

Mr. Smith will lie in state at the church Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m.. Visitation will be Tuesday from noon to 9 p.m. Family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday night.

Mr. Smith was born Nov. 25, 1909 to Baker and Della Smith in Bay City. He passed away Friday, Jan. 7, 2000 at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

He is survived by: his daughter and son-in-law, Lois Smith Booker and Odis of Orange, Tex.; his son, Roy Lester Smith of Houston; sister, Willie Clark of Bay City; two granddaughters, Rhonda Booker of Orange and Denise Stewart; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Silvia and two brothers, Ned and Moses.

Active pallbearers will be Roy Armelin, Arthur Armstrong, Kevin Edison, Anthony Hawkins, Nelson McCoy, James Smith, Mike Smith, III, Timothy L. Smith, and Wilbert Smith.

Last Rites Today For Thomas Smith

Mr. Thomas B. Smith, age 63 years, of Markham died July 3rd at 5:30 p. m. in the Matagorda General hospital. He was a member of the Blessing Masonic Lodge no. 411 AF&AM.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Irma Smith of Markham; four daughters Mrs. Myrtle Johnson and Mrs. Leoma Hale of Bay City, Mrs. Pauline Hickey of Markham and Mrs. Ethel Goode of Kingsville; three sons, Oscar of Houston, Joe of Wayne, Mich. and Thomas B. Smith Jr. of Oceanside, California. Also surviving are six sisters and one brother, Mrs. Willie Watkins and Mrs. Elza Baty of Bay City, Mrs. Sally Larkins of Cordell, Mrs. Eva Ertell of Freeport, Mrs. Annie Jones of Taft, Mrs. Minnie Lowe of Vivian, La., and P. D. Smith of Vidor, Texas.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p. m. today from the Ashby Memorial Church with Rev. R. E. Black and Dr. Allen O. Webb officiating. Interment was in the Hawley cemetery under the direction of the Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers were Pat McKissick, Gene Spoor, Frank Krenek, Vic Burchfield, Alton Snyder and Tom Harris. Honorary pallbearers were the members of the Blessing Masonic Lodge.

Beatrice M. Sneed

BAY CITY [Matagorda County, Texas] - Beatrice Moore Sneed, 91, of Bay City, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002.

She was born July 9, 1911, in Fort Worth, to the late Oscar Sr. and Mattie Hemphill Sneed. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors: daughter, Devorria Doann Sneed of Los Angeles, Calif.; brother, Oscar Sneed of Bay City; and one grandchild.

Preceded in death by: parents.

Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Green's Mortuary chapel.

Mason Angel Solis
(May 7, 2012 - May 8, 2012)

Mason Angel Solis, infant son of John Michael Solis and Erminia Garay Solis, was born May 7, 2012 at 9:34 PM and passed away May 8, 2012 at 7:34 PM.

His maternal grandfather, Anastacio Garay preceded him in death. Survivors include his parents and a brother Michael Andres Solis, maternal grandmother Janie Garay, paternal grandparents Richard Waymond Solis and Maria De Los Angels Rodriguez, paternal great grandfather Juventino Rodriguez and a number of Aunts, Uncles and Cousins.

A rosary will be recited at 6:00 PM Monday at the funeral home. Mass will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. His uncles David Solis and Steven Garay will serve as pallbearers.

Charles Spano
April 29, 1935 – March 25, 2012

Funeral services for Charles Spano, 76, of Richmond, Texas, are set for 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 30, 2012, at First United Methodist Church, 1127 Third Street, Rosenberg, Texas 77471, with the Rev. John Black officiating. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. Friday at Oakland Cemetery in Navasota, Texas.

Charles Spano was born April 29, 1935, in Galveston, Texas, to Joseph Spano and Trinidad Landin Spano. He died March 25, 2012, at his home in Richmond, Texas. He was a graduate of Navasota High School, Wharton County Jr. College, and University of Alabama, playing football throughout those years. He received his Masters degree from Prairie View A & M. His love of football, track, and other sports led to his coaching career, coaching at Stephen F. Austin State University, Sweeny High School (winning the 1966 State Football Championship), Bay City High School, Lamar Consolidated High School, Rockdale High School, and B.F. Terry High School from 1981 until his retirement in 2002. He was a longtime member of Texas High School Coaches Association.

He married Nancy Ann Knight, and in September 2011 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He and Nancy owned and operated Glassers Art Gallery in San Antonio at one time. Charles had been active in Rotary Clubs and Optimist Clubs, serving as President of the Sweeny Optimist Club during his time there.

He and Nancy loved to travel, especially enjoying their RV group, WesTex. He enjoyed watching bull riding and feeding birds.

In recent years, he found much enjoyment with his buddies at Bob’s Tacos.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Rosenberg, Texas. Family was very important to him; he especially loved his grandchildren, who will lovingly remember him as “Grand Dad.”

Preceded in death by: his father, Joseph Spano; brother, James Spano; and infant sister, Catherine Spano.

Survivors include: his wife, Nancy Spano, of Richmond, Texas; daughter, Tamerah A. Ringo and husband John of Coppell, Texas; three sons, Grant Spano and wife Norma of Rosenberg, Texas, Kyle Spano and wife Kim of Lakeway, Texas, and Greg Spano and wife Mary of Iowa Colony, Texas; 12 grandchildren, Kasey Spano-McClain and husband Tony, Michael Grant Spano, Kody Charles Spano, Kylie Machele Spano, Lauren Elizabeth Spano, Haley Rynn Ringo, Geoffrey Martin Spano, Koy Hunter Spano, Gabriella Spano, Molly Kate Spano, Marcello Spano, and Daniella Spano; one great-grandchild, Tatum Faith McClain; mother, Trinidad Landin Spano, of Houston, Texas; sister, Marguerite Spano, of Houston, Texas; sister-in-law Sandra Spano of Wharton, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Bernard “Bernie” Dean Spence
April 22, 1934 – May 17, 2012

Bernard “Bernie” Dean Spence, 78, passed away May 17, 2012 after a long illness.

He was born April 22, 1934, in Lawrence, Kansas to the late Walter Spence and Ruth Peasley Spence. After graduation, he served in the Navy as an airport fireman.

He married Millie Sinks in 1955. She passed away along with an infant daughter in 1957.

He married Shirley Shaffer in 1959. They moved to Bay City in 1964 with the Celanese expansion. He retired from Seagull Pipeline in 1995. He was a regular with the “Diamond S Coffee Bunch” and at the First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; first wife and infant daughter; three sisters; and beloved daughter, Lora Batson.

He is survived by: his wife of 53 years, Shirley Spence; son, David and Christy Spence of Lake Jackson; daughters, Gale and Larry Dupriest of Stephenville, Texas and Connie and Chris Donahue of Lenoir City, Tennessee; nine grandchildren, Audrey, Zack, Claire and Dean Donahue, Alexa Spence, Dana Dupriest Rodriguez and Tyler, Savanna and Lilly Batson; great-grandson, Aiden Rodriguez and sisters, Alta Slack and his twin, Bernice Nehrbas.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 4 until 6 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 20, 2012 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Mike Zimmerman officiating.

Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Tyler Batson, Jody Batson, Chris Donahue, Dean Donahue, Zack Donahue and Grant Miller.

Mrs. R. S. Starr

Mr. and Mrs. Julius Wilkerson and daughter were in Houston the first of the week called there by the death of his sister, Mrs. R. S. Starr.

Mrs. Zura Starr, 38, of Waller, died at 8:15 a. m. Sunday in a Houston hospital. She had been a resident of Waller for the past four years and was a native of Lolita. Surviving are her husband, R. S. Starr, Sr., a daughter, Miss Pearl Allen of Little Rock, Ark.; four sons, R. S. Starr, Jr., J. W. Starr and Ronnie Lee Starr of Waller, and Aubrey A. Allen of Monroe, La.; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Wilkerson of Palacios; one sister, Mrs. Lillie Rousch of Houston, and a brother, Julius Wilkerson of Palacios. Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Monday at the Fogle-West Chapel Chapel, with Rev. Lewis B. Quarles officiating. Burial in Springer Cemetery, Fogle-West conducting.

Mrs. Starr had recently undergone an operation from which it was thought she was recovering nicely and her death came as a severe shock to her family and friends.

Mrs. Wilkerson who has been in Houston several weeks with her daughters will return to Palacios the latter part of the week. The many Palacios friends of the family extend deepest sympathy.
