Evelyn “Nonnie” Alldredge
Schaal
July 18, 1925 - July 16, 2016
Evelyn “Nonnie” Alldredge Schaal, age 90, former longtime resident
of Bay City, TX, entered into rest on Saturday, July 16, 2016, in
her residence at Bridges of Mission, Mission, TX.
Evelyn was born on July 18, 1925, in Houston, TX, as the youngest of
seven children to Alma and Charles Alldredge.
Evelyn’s spiritual journey began as a child in the Old Palestine
Baptist Church of Alto, TX, where she voiced her lifetime commitment
to her faith.
She showed an early astounding talent for music, and studied piano
privately with Stella Prannif before graduating from Sam Houston
High School in Houston, TX. She was then awarded a full scholarship
to the University of Houston, where she graduated with honors with a
double BA in Music and Education in 1946. After graduation, she was
hired as an English and Music teacher by the Lolita/LaWard ISD.
In 1948, Evelyn married Alfred “Al” Schaal, and they settled in
Palacios, TX, where Al managed the municipal airport. Deciding to
make their home in Bay City, TX, they completed their family with
the births of Charles, Melanie, Richard, Allyson, and Stacey.
Beginning a music teaching career that would eventually span seven
decades, in 1950, Evelyn began teaching private piano and voice
lessons to students of all ages coming from Bay City and surrounding
communities. In 1969, she resumed her public school teaching career
with the Bay City ISD as a music teacher at Linnie Roberts
Elementary School. By the time she retired from public school
teaching in [1991], Evelyn had taught music, choir, and voice to all
grade levels in four of seven Bay City Schools. After her public
school retirement, she continued private instruction in her home
until 2008, when she moved to McAllen, Texas, to be near two of her
daughters.
Evelyn was valued as a musician and vocalist for events such as
weddings, worship services, funerals, revivals, and accompanied
numerous soloists and UIL students. While she was known to play the
pianos and organs at almost every house of worship and nursing
facility in the Bay City area, she devoted most of her service to
Calvary Baptist Church, where she played organ and piano and led
children’s choirs, and taught Sunday School and VBS until her
retirement in 2005.
Within Bay City, she also led community children’s choirs, served on
the board of Community Concerts, and volunteered for the Salvation
Army, the Women’s Crisis Pregnancy Center, and the Matagorda County
Historical Museum. In later years, Evelyn followed her dream of
seeing the world, and her love of travel took her to the United
Kingdom, the Caribbean, most of Western Europe, Thailand, and Egypt.
Other than the love that she had for her devoted husband and five
children, Evelyn’s greatest joy was expressing her faith with her
talents of music and teaching, and was proudest when seeing the
accomplishments and hard work of her many music students.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, Alma and Charles
Alldredge; her siblings; and by her husband of thirty-one years,
Alfred Schaal.
Evelyn is survived by two sons, Charles Schaal and wife Viki of
Kasson, MN, and Richard Schaal of Houston. She is survived by three
daughters, Melanie Schaal Wofford and husband Gary of McAllen,
Allyson Schaal Moore and husband Tim of Mission, and Stacey Schaal
Shuman of Dallas. Evelyn was also a proud grandmother to 14
grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.
Open Visitation for Evelyn will be Friday, July 22, 2016, at Taylor
Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City, TX.
Services will be held at Calvary Baptist Church in Bay City, TX on
Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 10 a.m., with graveside services
immediately following at Cedarvale Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Brad Wofford, Jerrison Moore, Dustin Shuman,
Monty Montgomery, Chris Bersano, Ralph Foltz Jr., Steve Gedansky,
and Bob Goss. Honorary pallbearers are Ashley Wofford, Timothy

Capt. Howard Stapp Succumbs To Heart Attack Saturday
The death of
Capt. Howard Stapp early Saturday morning from a heart attack at
Port Isabel, came as a shock to his family and friends, as he seemed
in his usual health Thursday when he left his home with C. C.
Mitchell for a trip to Port Isabel, the scene of his first duties as
a boatman 37 years ago, and his first visit there since.
Mr. Stapp was
born Sept. 20, 1871, near Moss Bluff in Liberty County, Texas. In
early life he moved with his parents to Galveston County and later
moved to Matagorda County, where he met and wooed Miss Teance May
Dunbar who became his bride on June 29, 1903, and to this union six
children were born. Mr. and Mrs. Stapp moved to Palacios in 1904 and
have continued to make this their home, rearing their family and
making our city most helpful and worth while citizens. Practically
all his life was spent on the water front, and as a boatman, both as
helper and owner of boats and barges, he probably was more familiar
with the bays and bayous along the Texas Gulf Coast than any one in
Palacios.
His boat, the
“Sterling,” was known and loved by people far and near, as was its
Captain, a true to life, seafaring man.
The deceased was
a member of the First Baptist Church also a life long Mason and his
influence as a civic and Christian man was far reaching. He was a
kind and loving husband, devoted father, loyal and helpful neighbor
and friend.
Funeral services
were held from the Palacios Funeral Home Monday at 10:00 A. M.
conducted by Rev. L. W. Crouch. Burial was made in the Palacios
Cemetery with the beautiful and impressive Masonic service. The
large concourse of friends to follow his remains to their last
resting place and the large array of beautiful floral tributes
attested the love and esteem held for the departed.
Surviving are his
wife, Teance May Stapp, three sons, Howard, of Port O’Connor, Bill
of La Marque, Jimmy of Palacios; three daughters, Mrs. Louise Sharp,
of Port O’Connor, Mrs. Clarence Paulsen and Ray Beth Stapp of
Palacios, six grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Louise Stapp Mott, of
Houston, nieces and nephews.

Ernest A. Starrett
The sudden death of
Ernest Albert Starrett, October 5th at 11:40 P. M. cast a
veil of sadness over the entire town and community.
Seemingly in the
height of health from day to day as he went in and out among his
loved ones, friends and co-workers made his untimely death a shock
to all.
E. A. Starrett had
lived in Palacios a number of years and the past several months
served as agent for Continental Trailway Bus System. His genial
disposition, fine business ability and sterling quality of character
and Christian stamina made for him friends whose names are legion.
He came from a long
line of historic prestige and proudly spoke his Irish accent. He
became a Christian early in life, joining with the Baptist Faith;
holding his Church affiliations in high regard.
Impressive services
were conducted by Rev. L. W. Crouch, Monday, September 7th
at 2 p. m. The funeral home was filled to full capacity with sincere
friends and loved ones, and the banks of lovely flowers spoke in
part of the love held for him by all. He is survived by his loving
wife, Annie Pitman Starrett, also his children, eight sisters, two
brothers and his wonderful mother who has reached the age of 80, and
a number of nieces and nephews.
The Home going to
the beloved person, E. A. Starrett, shall make Heaven dearer to all
who knew him and when life’s journey is over and we meet in that
place, “Fairer Than Day” all the toils and disappointments that we
have had here shall be forgiven in the “Sweet By and By.”
The worlds has been
made sweeter for his having lived here awhile, and those who knew
him best, loved him most. His was a life of truth, high ideals and
worthy deeds, having friends from every walk of life, he passed none
by without a smile and kindly greeting.
The flower covered
mound in Palacios Cemetery shall be sacred in sweet memories of
having “loved and lost” on Earth, but shall gain a victory at
Heaven’s gate.
Love and Live and
Death play a dramatic part in every human heart. God leads in
mysterious ways, His works to perform.
