Alex Shimek, 13-year-old boy of Blessing, was crushed to death by falling rice sacks Sunday afternoon at his home while playing hide and seek with friends and his brother. The boys were playing on rice sacks and four of the heavy sacks fell on the boy crushing him badly. He was taken to the Palacios hospital but died soon after arriving. The youngster’s head and chest were badly crushed. Surviving to mourn his loss are: his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Shimek; three brothers, Charles, Hubert and Anton; and one sister, Olga, of Blessing. Funeral services will be held from the Catholic church in Blessing Tuesday morning at 10:00 o’clock. Rev. R. L. Blinka will officiate. Walker-Matchett funeral home is in charge of arrangements. Donald I. Shimek, 61, of Palacios passed away May 31, 1996 at Wagner General Hospital in Palacios. He was born on April 13, 1935 in Louise, Texas to Ignac Joe and Angela Tannich Shimek. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife, Teresa Havel Shimek of Palacios; by two daughters and sons-in-law Linda and David Wilson of Palacios and Tena and Joe Frick of Blessing; by three sons and two daughters-in-law Troy and Mary Ann Shimek of Palacios, Mark Shimek of Port Lavaca and Michael and Kimberly Shimek of Palacios; by three sisters Dorothy Kocurek of Blessing, Rose Mary Filip of Lake Jackson and Patsy Gibson of Palacios and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, by a son, Donald Wayne Shimek and a daughter Phyllis Shimek. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a. m. He has been a resident of Palacios since 1937 and was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and a 70 year member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 6889 in Palacios.
