Emil Louis Saha

Emil Louis Saha a resident of El Maton, died in the VA Hospital in Houston, Wednesday, March 29.

Rosary was recited at 5 p. m. Thursday at the Taylor Bros. Chapel in Bay City. Requiem mass was held at 10 a. m. Friday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing followed by military graveside services in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

A son of John and Terezie Novosad Saha, he was born August 4, 1919 in Frydek, Texas. A veteran of World War II, he served with the Army in the European Theatre.

He is survived by his wife, Lena of El Maton; four daughters, Mrs. Suzanne Kucera of Boling, Anned, Kathleen and Cynthia Saha of El Maton; three sons, Garry, Marvin and Michael Saha of El Maton; six sisters, Mrs. Agnes Liska of Hillje, Mrs. Mary Knesek of Wallis, Sr., M. Narcissa of Pasadena, Sr., M. Leontine of Houston, Mrs. Mollie Masaryk of Houston and Mrs. Josie Kucurek of Frydek; one brother, Joe Saha of El Maton and four grandchildren.

Eugene Saha

Eugene Joseph Saha, 63, of El Maton, Texas, died August 7, 1998, at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

He was born July 8, 1935, in El Maton to Joe and Mary Agnes Sowa Saha.

He was a life-long resident of El Maton and a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include: Mother, Mary Agnes Sowa Saha of El Maton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Tibbie and Mike Urban of Friendswood, Texas; and Tammy and Jerry Evans, Jr. of Bay City; sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Monica Saha of Longview, Texas; Craig and Dawn Saha of Van Vleck, Texas; and Russell Saha of Bay City; sister, Elaine Marik of East Bernard, Texas; brother Joe L. Saha of El Maton; and 12 grandchildren.

Mr. Saha was preceded in death by his father Joe Saha and a sister Jo Ann Harvey.

A Rosary Service will be held at 7 p. m., August 9, 1998 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel and the Funeral Mass will be at 10 a. m. Monday, August 10, 1998 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing, Texas with Rev. Casey Jarzombek officiating.

Interment will follow at St. Peter’s Catholic Church Cemetery in Blessing.

Pallbearers will be Scott Saha, Kevin, Keith and Kerry Marik, David Landry and Jacob Saha.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Mike Urban and Brent and Daryl Harvey.

Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Joe F. Saha

Funeral services for Joe F. Saha, 79, of El Maton will be held 10 a. m. Tuesday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing with burial following at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery. A rosary will be held 7:30 p. m. today at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home chapel.

Mr. Saha was born July 4, 1912 in Freydek and died June 27, 1992 at his home.

He was a member of the Catholic church and a resident of Matagorda County since 1934. He belonged to the K. J. T. and the Knights of Columbus #4307 of Blessing.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Agnes Saha of El Maton; a daughter, Elaine Marik of East Bernard; two sons, Eugene Saha and Joe L. Saha, both of El Maton; two sisters, Mary Knesek of Victoria and Jessie Kocurek of Houston; 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Darryl Harvey, Eric Saha, Kevin Marik, Craig Saha, Scott Saha and Stephen Saha. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandsons, Keith Marik, Kerry Marik, Russell Saha and Brent Harvey.

Louis Paul Saha

Funeral Mass for Louis Paul Saha, 90, of El Maton, was 2 p. m. Monday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing with the Rev. Peter Higgins officiating. Burial followed at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Blessing. A rosary was said at 7 p. m. Sunday.

Mr. Saha was born July 22, 1904 in Frydek to Joseph and Josephine Buchala Saha and died August 27, 1994.

Mr. Saha had been a resident of El Maton since 1927 and was a member of St. Peter’s Methodist Church. He was a past Secretary Treasurer and 60 year member of the KJT.

Survivors include: his wife, Louise Hickl Saha of El Maton; one daughter and son-in-law, Ella and Wesley Stanley of Point Comfort; by four sons and three daughters-in-law, Gilbert and Dorothy Saha of Bay City, Alvin and Flo Saha of Angleton, Louis and Ann Saha of El Maton, and Dennis Saha of Huntington, Calif., by 17 grandchildren; and by 13 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Gilbert Saha, Alvin Saha, Louis Saha, Dennis Saha, Wesley Stanley and Lawrence Hickl.

Louise Hickl Saha

Louise Hickl Saha, 96, of El Maton died June 22, 2004, at Matagorda General Hospital. She was born July 7, 1907 in Frydek, Austin Co., Texas to the late John and Julia Pavlicek Hickl, Sr.

Mrs. Saha was a resident of El Maton since 1927 and was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church.

Survivors include: daughter, Ella Bucek Stanley of Victoria; sons and daughters-in-law: Gilbert and Dorothy Saha of Bay City, Alvin and Flo Saha of Angleton, Louis and Ann Saha of El Maton, and Dennis Saha of Sugar Land; brothers: Joe and Lawrence Hickl both of El Maton, and Jessie Hickl of Bay City; 17 grandchildren: Kenneth Bucek of Victoria, Gary Bucek of Conroe, Bryan Bucek of Bloomington, Glenn, Cheryl, Greg, Jeff, Darrell, Todd and Matt Saha all of Houston, Tim Saha of Corpus Christi, Jackie Cooper & Wendy Elliott both of San Antonio, Courtney LaTour and Britt Saha both of Angleton, Nicole Tummond and Jennifer Willis both of Chiefland, FL, 25 great-grandchildren, and many wonderful nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis P. Saha and her daughter, Evelyn Willis; sister, Annie Holub; brothers, William, August, Louis, Edward, and John Hickl.

Rosary will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, June 24, 2004, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Blessing.

The Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m., Friday at St. Peter's Catholic Church with Rev. Samuel Appiasi officiating.

Interment will follow at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Glenn, Jeff, Darrell, Todd, and Britt Saha, and Kenneth Bucek.

Honorary Pallbearers will be all the other grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Wednesday Evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

Mary Agnes Sowa Saha

A Parish Rosary for Mary Agnes Sowa Saha, 82, of El Maton will be held at 7:30 p. m. Wednesday, June 16, 1999 at Triska Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Thursday, June 17 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing with Rev. Peter Higgins officiating. Burial will follow at St. Peter Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be at 8 a. m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Saha died June 13. She was born August 4, 1916 in Frydek, Tex. to the late Mike Sowa and Agnes Kocurek Sowa. She had been a resident of Matagorda County since 1934.

She was a member of Catholic Daughters and the K. J. Z. T. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church of Blessing.

Mrs. Saha is survived by her daughter, Elaine Marik of East Bernard; son, Joe L. Saha of El Maton; 17 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents: husband, Joe L. Saha; daughter, JoAnn Harvey; and son, Eugene Saha.

Pallbearers will be Mrs. Saha’s grandsons, Darryl Harvey, Eric Saha, Keith Marik, Will Eidlebach, Kevin Marik and Stephen Saha.

Honorary pallbearers will be Scott Saha, Kerry Marik, Russell Saha, and Jacob Saha also her grandsons.

Vince Salas

Vince Salas, 93, of Bay City passed away August 29, at the Mauritz Hospital, Ganado. Survivors include: 2 daughters, Mrs. Adella Fabrygel of Midfield and Mrs. Olga Maris of Port Comfort; 4 sons, Henry Salas of Weimar, Anton Salas of Holman, Ben Salas of Pledger and Eugene Salas of Markham; 2 step-sons, Willie Zapalac of Schulenburg and John Zapalac of Rosenberg; and 37 grandchildren, 62 great grandchildren, and 6 great great grandchildren. Theodore Henry Schaffer

PORT LAVACA—Theodore “Ted” Henry Schaffer, 72, of Palacios, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999.

He was born May 4, 1927, in Augusta, Mont., to the late Henry Harry and Margaret Ann Cox-Schaffer. He was a World War II veteran of the U. S. Navy and served in the South Pacific. He was a retired carpenter and was Catholic.

Survivors: friends at Yang Chow Restaurant and Shimek’s Restaurant in Palacios.

Preceded in death by: wife and seven sisters.

Graveside services will be 5 p. m. Sunday at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Blessing, with Deacon Mike Vierira officiating. Military honors under the auspices of VFW Post No. 2467 of Palacios and VFW Post No. 4403 of Port Lavaca. Artero Memorial Chapels, Port Lavaca, (361) 552-2300.

Services Held Oct. 12 For Alex A. Schulte, Pioneer of Blessing

Funeral services for Alex A. Schulte were held Wednesday, October 12, in St. Peter's Catholic Church in Blessing at 9:30 a. m. Interment followed in St. Peter's Cemetery.

He was born in Victoria, Texas, on August 19, 1882 and died at 8:30 a. m. Monday, October 10 at Wagner General Hospital in Palacios. He moved to Matagorda County in 1910 and married Katie Herreth in 1912. They moved to Blessing in 1918 where they continued to reside.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Katie H. Schulte, two daughters, Mrs. Olla Mae Logan of Blessing and Mrs. Grace Cowger of Markham; two sisters, Mrs. Annie Moore and Mrs. Alma Bullard, both of Houston; one granddaughter, Miss Patricia Cowger of Markham; two grandsons, James Nelson Cowger of San Antonio and Edwin Bonner Logan of Blessing and three great grandchildren.

Katherine Barbara Schulte

Katherine Barbara Schulte, 85 of Blessing died in Wagner General Hospital in Palacios Tuesday. She was born in Gainesville, February 6, 1894. She had been a resident of Matagorda County for the past 61 years and was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Grace Cowger of Markham and Mrs. Olla Mae Logan of Blessing; three grandchildren, Edwin Logan, Kennedy; Patricia Cowger, Markham; and James Cowger, Blessing; and three great grandchildren, Laura, Karen and Jim Cowger of San Antonio. Rosary will be 8 p. m. today in the Taylor Bros. Chapel. Funeral services will be held in the St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing at 10 a. m. Thursday, under the direction of Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, with Father Jerome Stryk officiating. Interment will be in the St. Peter’s Cemetery, with John Domorad, L. P. Neuszer, James Cowger, Edwin Logan, Burt Logan and Jim Cowger as pallbearers.

Death Comes To Victor Schulte, Palacios Farmer

Funeral services were held Thursday morning at 9:30 from the Blessing Catholic church for Victor Schulte of Palacios who died Tuesday in an El Campo hospital.

Mr. Schulte had lived practically his whole life in Matagorda county and was engaged in farming. Death came after a short illness.

He was an uncle of Frank Bunk of Bay City. Other survivors include his widow, three daughters, Mrs. Barney Bump of Blessing and Mrs. Lloyd Ryman and Mrs. Jesse Adams, both of Houston; one son, Arthur, of Palacios; one sister and one brother, Alex of Blessing.

Interment was in Hawley cemetery with Taylor Bros., in charge of arrangements.

Funeral Services Held Here Monday P. M. For Mrs. Elizabeth K. Shea

Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth K. Shea were held at St. John's Episcopal Church, Monday, January 30, at 2 p. m. with the Rev. Ralph Masters conducting the service. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery.

The daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Leonard Schnitzlein, she was born March 31, 1871, in Hannibal, Missouri. She passed away at her home, 500 Lucas, Wednesday, January 25. She moved to Palacios approximately 25 years ago with her husband, John E. Shea, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by four nephews, Harold, Earl and George Schnitzlein of Hannibal, Mo. and Glen Schnitzlein of Banner Grove, Illinois.

Angelina Cecilia Shimek

Funeral services for Angelina Cecilia Shimek, 82, were scheduled for 10 a. m. today at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Palacios, with the Rev. Larry Matula officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery, Blessing.

A rosary was said at 7:30 p. m. Sunday at Palacios Funeral Home.

Mrs. Shimek was born Jan. 18, 1904, in Weimar, Texas, to Josef and Mary Brovee Tannich and died at 4:45 a. m. Feb. 9, 1986, at Matagorda General Hospital, Bay City.

Mrs. Shimek was an associate member of the K. J. Z. T. and a member of the Catholic church.

Survivors include her husband, I. J. Shimek of Palacios; three daughters, Dorothy Kocurek and Patsy Gibson of Palacios and Rose Marie Filip of Lake Jackson; a son, Donald Shimek of Palacios; five sisters, Tena Armata of Palacios, Agnes Perkins of Needville and Frances Maerz, Mary Kubesch and Cecelia Peterson, all of El Campo; 26 grand-children; and six great-grandchildren.

Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Cecilia Annie Shimek

Funeral services for Cecilia Annie Shimek, 73, of Bay City will be held 11 a. m. Wednesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Msgr. James Brunner officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery, Blessing.

A rosary will be said 8 p. m. today at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home chapel.

Mrs. Shimek was born Nov. 8, 1915, in Garwood, Texas, to Jim and Julia Marsha Piwetz and died Aug. 28, 1989, at Matagorda General Hospital, Bay City.

A resident of Bay City for 15 years, she was formerly of Blessing. She was a member of the Catholic church.

Survivors include three daughters, Charline C. Boriskie of Austin, Shirley J. Becher of Austin and Theresa A. Westbrook of Jasper, Texas; a son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy C. and Linda Shimek of Bay City; five sisters, Annie Eben of Needville, Agnes Pasteka of Giddings, Lydia Eidher of Rosenberg, Dorothy Baca of East Bernard and Martha Wanjura of Pasadena; a brother, Henry Piwetz of Rosenberg; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.

Pallbearers include Tony Piwonka, Jeff Piwonka, Chris Piwonka, Michael Shimek, Steve Boriskie and Tom Rasmussen.

Charlie R. Shimek

Funeral services for Charlie Robert Shimek, 55, were held Monday, January 29, at 10 a. m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Jerome Stryk officiating. Burial was in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Shimek was killed Friday in a one-car accident seven miles west of Bay City on State Highway 35. The accident occurred at 2:30 a. m. but the car was not found until 3 p. m. because it had crashed in an area not visible from the highway.

A resident of Blessing for seven years, where he operated a tavern, he was born March 30, 1917, in Schulenburg. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, KJT, SPJST and Kiwanis Club.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Cecilia Annie Shimek of Blessing; his father, Anton L. Shimek of Houston; three daughters, Miss Theresa Shimek of Blessing, Mrs. Charline Boriskie of Pasadena and Mrs. Shirley Piwonka of Leander; a son, Jimmy C. Shimek of Bay City; a sister, Miss Olga Shimek and two brothers, Hubert and Anthony Shimek, all of Houston and ten grandchildren.

L. J. Slaikeu

Mr. Lionel J. Slaikeu, a former resident of Palacios, died at his home, 4526 ½ East 57th Street, Maywood, California, on Saturday, June 1, 1940. Mr. Slaikeu, with his family, first moved to Palacios in 1909, and built his home in the little community of Carancahua, where he lived for twenty-eight years. In 1937, he and his wife and daughter, Carolyn, moved to California. For the past three years they have made their home near Los Angeles.

Rev. Leonard Oechsli, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Alhambra, California, of which Mr. Slaikeu was a member, officiated at the funeral service. Rev. Carrie Lucas, spoke a few words in loving tribute. Two beautiful quartette numbers were given: “The Beautiful Garden of Prayer” and “Sweet Peace, The Gift of God’s Love,” and a solo, “Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life,” was sung.

A splendid array of beautiful flowers portrayed the loving thoughts and sympathies of the many friends who knew and loved him. He was laid to rest in beautiful San Gabriel Cemetery. The memory of this wonderful Christian man, whose life was spent doing kind deeds and trying to make others happy, will long be remembered.

His is survived by his wife, Flora Slaikeu, two daughters, Mrs. Nell M. Green and Carolyn Slaikeu, a son, Roger Slaikeu, two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Carse and Mrs. May Rasmussen, and two brothers, Alva and George Slaikeu.

Debra Ann Sliva

Debra Ann Sliva, 16, of Blessing died July 16 at Matagorda General Hospital. Survivors include: (all from Blessing) parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tony R. Sliva; sister, Patricia Ann Sliva; brothers, Tony, Jr., Danny Lee and Patrick Alan Sliva; grandparents, Mrs. Edward Sliva, and from San Antonio, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Buckley. Funeral service will be held at Blessing's St. Peter's Church, July 18, Friday, 2 p. m. with Rev. Jerome Stryk officiating. Interment service will be held at St. Peter's Cemetery. Wesley H. Stanley

Wesley H. Stanley, 80, of Victoria passed away January 6, 2003.

He was born January 23, 1922, in Lone Oak, Texs to the late Burton Brown and Annie Bell Norris Stanley. He proudly served in the United States Army in Normandy, France, Rhineland and Central Europe during World War II and received 4 bronze stars. Mr. Stanley was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was retired from Alcoa after many years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Ella Saha Stanley of Victoria, Texas; two daughters, Barbara Bauer and her husband, Bill, of Port Lavaca, Texas, Connie Iley and her husband, Eddie, of Luling, Texas; one son, Don Stanley and his wife, Cathy, of Poway, California; three step-sons, Ken Bucek and his wife, Cindy, of Victoria, Texas, Gary Bucek and his wife, Mary of Conroe, Texas; Bryan Bucek of Port Lavaca, Texas; a sister, Johnnie Mae Lothridge and her husband, Fulton, of Columbus, Texas; twelve grandchldren, three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchildren.

A Rosary will be said Wednesday, January 8, 2003, at 7:00 P. M. at Rosewood Funeral Chapel.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, January 9, 2003, at 10:30 A. M. at Holy Family Catholic Church, Revs. Greg Korenek and Roger Hawes officiating. Graveside military services will follow at 1:00 P. M. at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Blessing, Texas.

Pallbearers will be Allen Brown, Dean Matthews, Gilbert Saha, Alvin Saha, Louis Saha, and Dennis Saha. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Bauer, Michael Bucek, Eddie Iley and Joe Lothridge.

Rudolph J. Stasta Jr.

EL MATON- Rudolph "Rudy" Joseph Stasta Jr., 59, of El Maton, died Friday, Aug. 27, 2004.

He was born April 28, 1945, in El Campo, to the late Rudolph Sr. and Bessie Kacer Stasta. He attended Wharton County Junior College and graduated from Lamar Tech and was a cotton mill wright. He was also a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Blessing and the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus.

Survivors: sister, Angeline Gaas of Victoria.

Preceded in death by: brother, Raymond Stasta.

Visitation will begin 9 a.m. Monday at St. Peter Catholic Church in Blessing, with a rosary being recited 9:30 a.m.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the church, the Rev. Samuel Appiasi officiating.

Burial will be at St. Peter Catholic Cemetery. Triska Funeral Home, El Campo, 979-543-3681.

Frank B. Svetlik

Frank B. Svetlik, 89, of Markham died June 10, 2000 at Bay Villa Nursing Home. He was born February 2, 1911 in Lavaca Co., Texas to the late August and Matilda Otto Svetlik. Mr. Svetlik was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church, a longtime resident of the Markham area, and a retired farmer.

Survivors include: daughters and sons-in-law; Alice Marie and George Paul Haas of Pasadena, Betty Jo and Earl Raabe of Houston and Theresa Susan and Mark Garrison of Markham; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary T. Svetlik November 26, 1999, by his sister Mary Zemanek and his two brothers, Ray and Ladik Svetlik.

A rosary service was held 7:30 Sunday at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home and the Funeral Mass was 10 a.m. Monday, June 12, 2000, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Blessing with the Rev. Sam Appiasi officiating. Interment followed at St. Peters Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Richard Zemanek, Randall Raabe, George Haas, Earl Raabe, Mark Garrison and Ronnie Ford.
