Funeral services for O. E. Sailor were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock with Rev. J. A. Derrick, of Premont, Texas, officiating, assisted by Rev. George F. Gillespie, of Palacios, and many friends from Bay City, Wharton and adjoining communities were here to pay him tribute. The body was then taken to Rosenberg and shipped to Pampa, Texas, for burial. Mrs. Sailor, son and wife, Sheriff and Mrs. B. E. Sailor, accompanying the remains. Oscar Emmett Sailor was born January 25, 1881 in Montgomery County, Mo., and died in Wharton, Texas, September 8, 1945, age 64 years, 7 months and 14 days. On November 1, 1900 he was married to Miss Sina Elizabeth Bohrer, and to this union was born one son, B. E. Sailor, of Bay City. Mr. and Mrs. Sailor had been residents of Texas for the past 39 years, moving to the Panhandle October 6, 1906, where they engaged in farming during the pioneer days of that section of the state. In 1927 they retired and moved to Palacios. Here they built their home at 118 South Boulevard in which they took pride and made it one of the most attractive placed in our city. A well kept lawn and a profusion of flowers and shrubs at all times drew the admiration of all who passed that way. Mr. Sailor united with the Presbyterian Church in early life and was a citizen held in high esteem by all who knew him. He was quiet and unassuming yet ready to lend a helping hand whenever needed, and his passing brings sorrow to a large circle of friends. Mr. Sailor’s health had been failing for some months and he became seriously ill in the early summer. He continued to grow worse and was taken to the hospital at Wharton where he passed away at six o’clock Saturday afternoon. Survivors besides his widow and son, are one grandson, Donald B. Sailor, USNR, Washington, D. C., one great-granddaughter, Donna Jean Sailor, of Washington, D. C. and one brother, R. J. Sailor, of Pampa, Texas, and to these we extend our deepest sympathy.

The body of Private Benny E. Small, 24th Ordnance Company, of Camp Hulen, victim of an automobile accident near the turning basin Monday night was today on its way to his former home in St. Louis, Mo., accompanied by Pvt. Herbert B. Neff, of the same organization. The accident occurred about 10 p. m. Monday when Private Small, Pvt. James Edward Brown, Sgt. Alford J. Louden and Pvt. Oscar W. Gillis were returning to Camp Hulen from Palacios. Although details as to the cause of the wreck are not clear, it is believed that their car was side-swiped by a “hit and run” driver which forced their car off the road into the concrete abutment of a culvert. All three of the other passengers were injured, one of them seriously. The car was so badly damaged in the resulting crash that it was extremely difficult to remove the injured. Small died about five o’clock the following morning. No trace of the car which forced them into the bridge has been found as yet.

Funeral services for Mignon Smith, 68, of Palacios will be held at 2 p.m. on Wed. (Mar. 30) at First United Methodist Church in Palacios. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thurs. (Mar. 31) at Union Cemetery in Freestone County, Texas. Mitzy Mignon Jolly was born and raised in Teague, Texas, by doting parents L.A. and Wynema, surrounded by love, family and music and she died March 24, 2016 surrounded by her family, from complications arising from an emergency surgery. She was an only child but part of a close-knit extended family, often found sleeping with many cousins on a “Baptist pallet” at the house of her grandparents, Mom Pearl and Daddy Hub Turner. Church was always a second home. Her childhood was one of tent revivals and all-night singings. With L. A. the music director at Teague’s Eighth Avenue Bap tist Church and Wynema a piano teacher, it wasn’t long before Mignon became an accomplished pianist herself. She used that gift throughout her life — first at Eighth Avenue, most recently as pianist for First United Methodist Church of Palacios. She was at a secretarial course in Waco when, by luck, she hit it off with a football player who’d grown up in the neighboring town. She and Paul Smith married a year and a half later. They enjoyed the next 48 years together, raising two children, Mechelle and Corbett. Traversing the state for Paul’s work as a football coach (and later as a public-school administrator), Mignon somehow managed to juggle being a coach’s wife, raising two kids and going back to school — graduating summa cum laude from Pan American University and tacking on two master’s degrees to boot. She worked across Texas in a variety of public education roles— teacher, counselor, administrator — before retiring from Calhoun County ISD in 2008. Mignon was so much more to those who knew her: a habitual card-sender, caregiver, conversationalist, cat lover, chef, gift-giver (and QVC junkie), loyal friend, snazzy dresser and international traveler. Mignon Smith was unfailingly good at everything — except for sweating (she’d over-heat instead) and sleep. She crammed so much into her 68 years, there wasn’t much time for rest. In addition to her husband and two children, she is survived by a daughter-in-law, Nicole, and three grandchildren, Maren, Georgia and Lawrence. She was met by a large group of family and friends at the Pearly Gates, starting another glorious revival. Memorials may be made to Eighth Avenue Baptist Church in Teague or FUMC-Palacios. Online condolences can be made at www.taylorbros. net. Arrangements are with Palacios Funeral Home.

She first married Jay Kent Keller of Midfield, and they had two daughters: Alice Shirley and Ann Sharon. She secondly married Wesley A. Sullivan of High Island, TX. Barbara lived all but 30 years of her life in Matagorda County. She and Wesley transferred to High Island with AMMOCO in 1962 and returned to Bay City in 1992. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husbands; brothers James L. Jr. (Jake), Gyle T., Warren H. and Billy M. McKissick; sister Reba M. (Junie) McKissick; daughter and son-in-law A. Shirley and Vernon (Sonny) Meyer; grandsons Mark A. Meyer and Darrell R. Saha; and granddaughter Lindsay Meyer. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law Ann and Louis Saha of El Maton; grandsons Jay K. (Lona) and Gary L. (Susan) Meyer, Leslie A. (Toby) Meyer and Jeffrey D. (Christina) Saha; great grandchildren, Lacy Meyer Rosson of Houston, Bruce Meyer of Katy, Mackenzie Meyer of Austin, Heather Meyer Savage (Brandon) of Angleton, Taylor Vacek of Danevang, and Jordan Meyer of Oyster Creek; five great-great grandchildren; special sister-in-law Thelma McKissick of Bay City; and many beloved nieces, nephews and friends. Barbara, a US Postal Service retiree, began her career as Post Master of the Buckeye Post Office. When she and her husband, Kent, began a construction company in the early 50’s, she drove a dump truck, matching him load for load. When the business grew, she became the bookkeeper until she was “promoted” to full-time housewife, mother and grandmother. She resumed her service with the postal service when she and husband, Wesley, moved to High Island, working in both High Island and Beaumont. Besides her family, Barbara had two other great loves in her life: traveling and playing cards or dominoes. Cooking for family and friends came in a close fourth place. She loved to entertain. A perfect day included cooking lunch for a group of friends/family and playing cards (canasta was a favorite) or 42 all afternoon! She traveled extensively throughout the US, Mexico, Canada and Nova Scotia. She cruised the Caribbean with daughter Shirley and family; she cruised the Inside Passage to Alaska for her 85th birthday with daughter Ann and family. Barbara was also an artist. Her paintings can be found hanging in homes all along the Gulf Coast and up to New York. New York tourists wintering in High Island became interested in her art and purchased several pieces for their homes. Barbara was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bay City; she loved her church family, especially Brother Zimmerman, Deacon John and Mary Jane McMillian, her Sunday School Class and the Jet Setters. She was a VFW Ladies Auxiliary Life Member, a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority (High Island) and a local chapter of the AARP. She lived her final seven months at the Country Assisted Living in Danevang, TX. Those were seven months made possible by the loving, compassionate care provided by Sandra Ford and her staff. In addition to Sandra and her staff, Barbara’s family wishes to thank Houston (El Campo) Hospice staff, Brother Mike Zimmerman, and her church family at First Baptist Church in Bay City for care, thoughts and prayers, and visits. The family will receive friends and relatives from 5PM until 7PM Monday at the funeral home. Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel with Dr. Mike Zimmerman officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Louis Saha, Jeff Saha, Taylor Vace, R. E. (Bob) Allen, John McMillan and Mike Henderson. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to First Baptist Church/Bay City Building Fund, Houston (El Campo) Hospice or the Matagorda Regional Medical Center Foundation. www.taylorbros.net Photo courtesy of Faye Cunningham
