Bernadette Ellsworth Haines Speckman
October 25, 1925 - March 13, 2015

Born in Bay City, Texas, on October 25, 1925, Bernadette loved to travel, and although she hadn’t been able to in years, she made it to the Promised Land, March 13, 2015.

Her grandparents, Elmer Ellsworth Fry and Minnie Katherine Fry, moved to Bay City from Westover, Pennsylvania, in 1901, and farmed the land that is now between Sycamore and Nichols streets, where Bernadette and her mother, Shirley Fry Haines, later lived.

Bernadette earned her RN at the Lilly Jollie School of Nursing in Houston, in 1946, coming back to Bay City to work, first at the Matagorda County Hospital as an ER nurse, and then for the Bay City Independent School District, as a School Nurse from 1958-1974, caring for most of Bay City’s children at that time.

She met her husband, Joyce (Speck) in 1947, when he came to Bay City after the War, seeking employment, and a place to live. Bernadette thought he was the most handsome guy she had ever met and told him that her mother would rent him a room at their house (even though her Mom had said she didn’t want to rent the room out anymore)! They married in 1948, and built a house next door on 8th Street. They both took early retirement in 1974, and moved to Chriesman, Texas, where Joyce was born and raised and was eager to get back to the farm life that he loved.

Bernadette became the Postmistress of the old Chriesman Post Office, that had a wood stove, a naked light-bulb, and an outhouse. Things never changed much in Chriesman. She also worked for the Census Bureau during the 1980 and 1990 censuses, thereby meeting most everyone there. She and Joyce were instrumental in forming the Chriesman Improvement League, to revitalize their little community, and she was President of the Chriesman Cemetery Association, and was an elder in the Presbyterian Church. Bernadette was a member of two Quilting Guilds, and created many heirlooms with tiny, invisible, perfect stitches.

Bernadette was the consummate nurse in all areas of her life, always putting the needs of other people before her own. She never complained and had few desires for material things, and often said “If I don’t have it, I don’t need it”. Her favorite book in the Bible was Romans.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joyce, who died in 2007.

She is survived by her children, Caressa Inman and beloved son-in-law Jim; Luke Palmer Speckman and daughter-in-law Lee Ellen; grandchildren, Caressa Inman Vajdos and husband Brian and their children, Caressa Ella and Sadie; Jessica Inman Martin and husband Matthew and their children, Cooper and Annie; Burton Palmer Speckman and wife Kimberly and their children, Charlie and Beau; Katie Speckman Cobbs and husband Bruce and their children, Hallie and Mason; and Benjamin Merritt Speckman.

In keeping with her wishes and her philosophy of helping others at all times, even in death, her body was donated to the Texas A&M University Health Science Center for Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics, so future nurses and doctors can learn and advance their medical knowledge and research.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Caldwell, Texas, on Monday, March 16, 2015, at 11 a.m.

Memorials may be made to Presbyterian Children’s Home, 4407 Bee Cave Rd, Suite 520, Austin, Texas 78746.
