Lynn Quillin

July 23, 1933 - January 21, 2015

Lynn Quillin, 81, of Bay City, TX, took his last flight home on Wednesday, January 21, 2015, when he passed away in Webster, TX, following a short illness.

A trained U.S. Air Force pilot, Reservist and Air Force Academy Admissions Officer, he was known for his joy of taking friends and visitors up in his Cessna, to see his adopted Gulf Coast community of Bay City, TX.

He was born on a farm in Depression era rural Fouke, AK, on July 23, 1933, to schoolteacher, Austin Albert Quillin and avid reader, Rachel Ophelia Lynn, their fourth and last child.  An exceptionally gifted child, he skipped a grade and graduated Fouke High School at 17.  Anyone who knew him certainly knew he reveled as a graduate of the University of Arkansas (1955) with a B.A. and minor in Architecture.

He then married Mary Josephine Moore on Monday, April 2, 1956, because they did not want to marry on April Fool’s Day.  The two departed the next day for Bartow Air Force Base, FL, where he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant.  After attending flight school, he served at multiple bases before being stationed in K-6 Pyongtaek, Korea.  He held this service dear, and often spoke of his love of the Korean people, and its children especially.

Lynn and Jo ran Bay City Office Supply for over 40 years and he was always open to dispense advice from his “open concept” office in the store.   His community service was legendary, including Jaycees, Kiwanis, Bay City School Board, Matagorda General Hospital Board, Bay City Public Library Board, and the Matagorda County Democratic Party, of which he received a lifetime award in 2014, for over 50 years of service.  Indeed, his store was the Democratic Meeting location for most of its 40 years.

Lynn is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Jo; his three daughters, Jennifer Maxwell (Sonny), Kathleen Nathan (Keith) and Elizabeth Quillin; three beloved grandchildren, John Austin, Joseph Dane and Katherine “Kate” Lyndsey Nathan; his sister, Theresa Webb of El Campo, TX; and brother, Austin Albert Quillin (Sibble) of Rockwall, TX.  He is also survived by his much-loved nieces and nephews, Paul Webb, Brenda Lanier, Carla Lovelace, Lisa Webb, Judy Stohle, Bob Quillin and Ed Quillin; nine grand-niece and nephews; and 13 great-grand-niece and nephews.

Lynn was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Alma Quillin Lanier; as well as his brothers-in-law, Emmet Lanier and Paul Dewey Webb.

A military funeral will be held Thursday, January 29, 2015, at 12:30 p.m., at U.S. National Cemetery,  10410   Veteran›s Memorial Drive, Houston, TX.

A memorial and celebration of his life will be held Saturday, January 31, 2015, at 2 p.m., at First Baptist Church, 2321 Ave. F, Bay City, TX.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bay City Public Library or the Matagorda Regional Medical Foundation.

Jo was raised in Fouke except for the four years she lived in Bremerton, WA during WWII.  After returning to Arkansas, she graduated Fouke High School and attended Southern State in Magnolia, AR.

In 1956 Jo married Lynn Quillin becoming a proud Air Force wife. They honeymooned on the road to Lakeland Air Force Base in Winter Haven, FL where Lynn was stationed.

In 1959 they moved to Bay City and opened Bay City Office Supply which they owned for over 40 years.  While working alongside her husband, Jo raised three daughters and supported them in their many activities.  She hand-made dozens of dance recital costumes, spent summer Saturdays at swim meets and threw the best darn kids birthday parties ever!

Jo was a member of First Baptist Church of Bay City and devoted 25 years to teaching a pre-school Sunday school class with her dear friend JoAnn Culbreth.  She and JoAnn continued their service by creating the beautiful flower arrangements displayed in the sanctuary on Sundays.

She was also a member of the Bay City Book Review Club and played bridge with the same group of wonderful friends for over 50 years.

Jo was a kind and generous mother.  She opened her home to everyone and she was always willing to help those in need. But her greatest joy was being “JoJo” to her three beautiful grandchildren, Austin, Dane and Kate Nathan.

Jo is survived by her three daughters,  Jennifer (Sonny), Kathleen (Keith), and Elizabeth; three beloved grandchildren, John Austin, Joseph Dane and Katherine Lyndsey Nathan; brother, Johnny Moore of Texarkana;  and sisters-in-law, Theresa Webb of El Campo and Sibble Quillin of Rockwall.  She is also survived by her much-loved nieces and nephews, Brenda Lanier, Carla Lovelace, Lisa Webb, Judy Stohle, Bob Quillin, Ed Quillin, Paul Webb and Mark Christopher Moore.

Mrs. Quinn moved from Central to Southern Texas in 1918. In her girlhood she became a Christian and a member of the Baptist Church. In 1932 she was married to Mr. Tommie Lee Quinn and to this union was born two children, Allen Dean, the son and Betty Lea, the little daughter.

O. Warner of Fort Worth, Hugh Warner of Raymondville, James Warner of Huntsville and Chester Warner who is now in the service of his country. Many are her friends who together with other relatives lament her so early going. She lived a quiet modest humble life giving her best for her home and her loves ones. Donna Jean Williamson Quirk
January 9, 1941  - May 4, 2018

Donna Jean Quirk went home to be with her Lord and Savior on May 4, 2018. Donna was born on January 9, 1941 to Donald Leonard Williamson and Alberta Ruby Eberwein Williamson in Rochester, N.Y. She lived in that area, primarily Brockport, until age eight when, with her new step-father, Raymond Seifert, her Mom, her brother, Gary and step-siblings, the westward trek began. From New York to Texas to Colorado to Nevada to California.

It was while she was living in California she met the love of her life, Thomas L. Quirk whom she married on April 25, 1959.

Donna was preceded in death by her son, Scott Anthony Quirk; her mother, Ruby Seifert; her step-father, Raymond Seifert; and her father, Don Williamson.

Donna is survived by her husband of 59 years, Thomas L. Quirk of Bay City, TX; son, Thomas L, Quirk Jr. (Barbara) of Pflugerville, TX; daughter, Jeanna Lynn Thompson of Bay City; daughter-in-law, Barbara Burnell Quirk currently of Temple, TX; brother, Gary C. Williamson (Lisa) of Richards, TX; grandson/adopted son, Alex Quirk of Bay City, TX; plus six more grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Donna loved her family, none were too old for her to worry about or fret over. She loved the Lord her God with all her heart, and all her soul and all her mind and that love extended to her neighbor as well. She in turn was an easy person to love, her ready smile; her sincere concern for others and the way she put people at ease – there was no guile about her. Donna loved worshiping the Lord – whether through music (she had a beautiful alto voice), Pastoral care of shut-ins, Bible study or participating in the Lord’s Supper – she gave it her all. A long time member of Bay City First Christian Church, she was an Elder at its closing in January 2015.

Donna also loved working in her yard and caring for her potted plants. Earlier she had been an avid square dancer and enjoyed attending dances all over Texas. What she liked most about square dancing was the dancers. She often remarked they were the some of the nicest people she ever met.

Her family extends a loving thank you to the wonderful folks at Houston Hospice – El Campo Branch. We don’t know what we would have done without you. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

A memorial service will be held at Van Vleck First United Methodist Church in Van Vleck, TX on Friday May 11, 2018 at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Kenny Carter officiating.
