Matthews Patterson

On December 11, at 8:35 PM Matthews Patterson crossed “The Bar”. As the last lingering rays of a radiant day faded into the darkness of night, the spirit of this beautiful quiet Christian life took its flight to the heavenly home.

Mr. Patterson was 64 years, 7 months and 17 days old. He is survived by; four daughters, Mrs. Ethel Kelly and Mrs. Lela Finch, of Newgulf, Mrs. Hattie Page of Gulf, and Mrs. Pearl Cartwright of Beeville, Texas; two sons, Frank Patterson of Flagstaff, Arizona, and Henry Allen Patterson of Gulf, Texas.

On December 13, at 3:00 PM, the services were held from the First Baptist Church of Bay City, Texas, with the following ministers, former pastors, in charge; Rev. J. L. Eddings, Bellville, Texas, Rev. L. R. Byrd, Ganado, Texas, Rev. M. R. Soileau and Rev. Odis Rainer. A large concourse of friends attended the services. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful, attesting the fact that his life had been a benediction to those he had touched. His body was laid to rest in Cedarvale Cemetery by the side of his companion, who preceded him only a few years ago.

During Mr. Patterson’s long illness he often spoke of his heavenly home. His going might be fitly expressed in the words of Alfred Tennyson, “Crossing the Bar”.

“Sunset and evening star

And one clear call for me;

And may there be no

Moaning at the bar

When I put out to sea.

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,

Too full for sound or foam,

When that which drew from out

The boundless deep,

Turns again, home.

Twilight and evening bell,

And after that the dark,

And may there be no sadness of farewell

When I embark.

For though from out the bourne of

Time and space

The flood may bear me far,

I hope to meet my Pilot face to face

When I have crossed the bar.”

-A Friend
