Roxie Mae O'Neal
November 6, 1922 - May 28, 2018

On November 6, 1922, in Pledger, Texas, Matagorda County, a beautiful baby girl was born to Henry McBride and Anne Wiley McBride. They named her Roxie Mae McBride. She grew up in Pledger, Texas, attended Pledger High School and attended Powell Point to complete her high school education. She later attended Franklin Beauty school in Houston, TX in 1946. After completion she opened the second beauty shop in the South End of Bay City where she served her clientele for 13 years. After closing her salon she then went to work at various salons including Teressa's and Styles and Hubbard's Hair Fashion (Marguerite's). Her hairdressing career ended and she went to work at Walmart in the early 90's and she worked there for 18 years first helping customers in the fabrics and crafts and later greeting the community with her trademark smile.

At an early age she attended Israel Chapel A. M. E. Church and confessed Christ as her Saviour at Rock West Baptist Church. When the family moved to Bay City, TX she joined Tyree Chapel, A. M. E. Church in 1940. She remained a faithful member, until her health started to fail, working out her salvation letting the Lord use her from the door to the choir, church secretary, steward, stewardess, trustee, and Missionary.

She want about doing good and always putting Christ first in everything she did. During her months of illness she continued to lean heavily on the Lord, calling upon Him to carry her through.

At the age of 19 she met and married Andrew Jackson and this marriage lasted five years. They separated and divorced and she later married Ezekiel O'Neal Sr. and in 1999 death separated them.

Roxie was a community activist performing her civic duty as a precinct co-chair for decades working her last election at the age of 90 in 2012. She was also a dedicated member of the Order of the Eastern Star #219 and an Amaranth. A 4-H club leader working with the youth in her community. She faithfully served as an officer of the Eastview Cemetery Association.

She lived a life of service and was loved and admired by many, a mother to four biological children but a surrogate to dozens. As we say goodbye to this lovable sassy powerhouse, matriarch and friend to many. "There is an open gate at the end of the road through which each must go alone and there is light we cannot see, Our Father claims His own." May you rest in peace in the Chest of Jesus Christ.

Roxie Mae O'Neal departed this life on Monday, May 28, 2018 at Matagorda Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
