Alton Norman Nelsen
(June 20, 1929 - December 13, 2016)

Alton Norman Nelsen, 87, of Blessing passed away at his home on December 13, 2016. Mr. Nelsen was born on June 20, 1929 in Danevang to Hans Jacob and Emilie Andersen Nelsen. He attended Danevang School and graduated from El Campo High School in 1946 as an honor graduate. He served as the president of the Danevang 4-H Club, and he participated in county fairs throughout the state by raising stock animals and by competing in agricultural demonstrations. Because of his active participation in 4-H, he was selected to be a delegate in the International Farm Youth Exchange Project, where he lived and worked in agricultural communities throughout Denmark. After graduating from high school, he attended Wharton County Junior College and was a member of the first graduating class in 1948. He then attended and graduated from Texas College of Arts and Industry (Texas A&I) in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering. Upon enlisting in the United States Army, he was stationed in Fort Hood, and after basic training, Mr. Nelsen was selected to attend non-commissioned officer school. He was deployed to Camp Roeder near Salzburg, Austria and served with the 350th Infantry Regiment as a medic. While stationed in Austria, Mr. Nelsen met his future wife, Frieda Artner. After a brief courtship, the couple married on October 22, 1955 at Danevang Lutheran Church. After marrying, Mr. Nelsen continued his education at Sam Houston State Teachers College by obtaining a Masters in Education. Mr. Nelsen moved back to Blessing and joined the faculty at Tidehaven High School in 1958, where he remained a dedicated and respected teacher for the next 36 years. While at Tidehaven, he taught upper level math and science courses. His greatest pleasure was witnessing his students' successes and maintaining close relationships with them. Any student in his class had no choice but to become "one of his." His former students will fondly remember the phrases - "family friends," "graphite parties,” “caution lights,” “don’t push the panic button” and "I will supply the party favors (tests)." After retiring from teaching, he returned full-time to agricultural pursuits by farming and ranching on his farm outside of Blessing. He remained an active member of the Matagorda County Retired Teachers Association and First United Methodist Church in Palacios. Mr. Nelsen made two return trips to Austria with Frieda during retirement. One of his greatest pastimes was playing a good hand of dominoes with his family and friends. He also enjoyed watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren grow into individuals of whom he was very proud. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 56 years, Frieda, his son-in-law Vernon L. Henkes and his brother Gilbert Nelsen. He is survived by daughters Linda Miculka (David); Patsy Simpson (Clay); Donna Henkes Tuttle (Steve); and son, Aaron Nelsen (M'Liss). He is survived by his grandchildren - Brian Miculka; Kyle Simpson (Kendra); Kayla Gostnell (Gary); Jenna Warner (Jeremy); Courtney Henkes; Meredith Nelsen; Amanda Nelsen; and Morgan Nelsen. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren Connor Nelsen Henkes; Lilly Simpson; and James Alton Simpson and his brother Daniel Nelsen. His close friend, Nellie Rockenbaugh, will also grieve his passing. We would like to thank his caregivers Peggy DeLancy and Ginger Wenglar for their love and support during this time. The loss of a loved one is always difficult, but the burden of this loss has been lessened by the care and compassion that Peggy and Ginger have shown to our family. Visitation will be on Thursday, December 15th, at Palacios Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church in Palacios on December 16,2016 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Hawley Cemetery. December 19, 1924 - April 23, 2020

Maurice Calvin New, 95, of Bay City, Texas passed away on April 23, 2020 surrounded by the loving thoughts and prayers of his family.

Maurice was born to Jessie and Gertrude New in Speaks, Texas, on December 19, 1924.  He had nine brothers and sisters.  He met the love of his life, Florence Buchanan, in Bay City, TX, and they were married on Christmas Day in 1942.  They celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary this past December.

Maurice and Florence set off to San Diego where he served in the Marine Corp. The couple then returned to Bay City where he started his own electrical business, New Electric, which he operated for more than 40 years.

Well-known in the community for his integrity, generosity and kind spirit, Maurice was a man of his word and a good friend to all.  He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and he enjoyed simply being outdoors – even if it was just laying on a blanket under his pecan trees reading a book. Florence Elva New
December 23, 1925 - May 01,2020

Florence Elva New, 94, of Bay City, Texas passed away on May 1, 2020.

Florence was born to Roy and Minnie Buchanan in Midfield, Texas, on December 23, 1925.  Florence married the love of her life, Maurice New in Bay City, TX on Christmas Day in 1942.  They celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary this past December.

Florence and Maurice had a “Forever Love,” a love so strong that nothing could keep them apart. This is even more evident to Florence’s family, as she follows him in death by only eight days. Her family is consoled knowing Maurice was there awaiting her arrival, and they are now together for eternity.  “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.  But the greatest of these is love”- Corinthians 13:13

Florence was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was very proud of her family and loved any chance to spend time with them.  Florence would spend hours cooking and loved for her family to gather over a meal.  Her family will tell you she was the best cook and that no one could replicate her recipes, especially her homemade chicken ‘n dumplings, though many have tried.  Florence also enjoyed spending time outdoors tending to her flowers and garden.

Florence was one of nicest people you will ever meet, she never had a bad word to say about anyone. She was also a very strong woman, from milking cows and picking cotton as a young girl to fighting health challenges in her later years.  She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and will forever be in our hearts.

Florence is preceded in death by her brothers Orville Buchanan, Herbert Buchanan, and husband Maurice New. Florence is survived by daughter Maureen Cardwell and Jerry, daughter Debby Cain and Steve, and son, Mike New; Grandchildren Michelle Norman, Kelly McCoy, Catherine Bybee, Clay Cain, Stephanie New, Kimberly New, Ronnie Cardwell, Christie Tuminello, LeAnne Henneke and Jerry Cardwell; 26 great-grandchildren and many loving great nieces, nephews, and extended family.

William Kirk Niemann

(May 15, 1974 - October 28, 2016)

William Kirk Niemann, 42, of Spring, Texas passed away October 28, 2016. He was born May 15, 1974 in Austin, Texas.

Kirk is survived by his mother Lynda Springer of Spring; father Gary Niemann of San Antonio; son Gage Niemann of Bay City; sister Lindsay Niemann of Conroe, and extended family, including Judy Miller “his second mom,” and Gwen Springer.

Kirk had a love for the great outdoors and enjoyed taking walks with his son, Gage, exploring the numerous things they would find on their way. It was important to Kirk for his son to see the beauty and majesty of God's creation, and he often shared Bible stories with him. Kirk loved children, and it was not unusual during his time with Gage that other children would see and hear the laughter and would want to join in the fun.

At a very early age, Kirk showed a remarkable natural gift for music. His musical talent was obvious at age two, when he was able to belt out the song, "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing," and every note was pitch perfect! As a teen, he became a fantastic drummer and then went on to excel on the guitar, where he would play, sing, and compose his own music.

Another one of Kirk's outstanding characteristics was his charismatic personality, which served him well, especially in business. With his winning smile and charisma, he could sell anything that he believed in, but he refused to sell anything that could be construed as misleading.

Kirk loved "family" and he is already greatly missed by his family and friends, especially those whose lives he touched each day.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 3, 2016 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 4, 2016 at the Northside Chapel with Rev. Tommy Griffin officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck, TX. Pallbearers will be Jack Burt, Ray Carrillo, Donny Carrillo, and Michael Scott.

Helen Clara Nygard

February 07, 1931 - February 22, 2019

Helen was born on February 7, 1931 in Alvin, TX. She passed away on February 22, 2019 in Houston, TX. For about 75 years, she celebrated her birthday on the 6th, but when she realized she actually had another birth certificate that listed her birthday as the 7th, she sometimes celebrated on that day, or both. She recently enjoyed both cheesecake and strawberry shortcake on her 88thbirthday. She loved desserts!!

She was raised in Clute, TX and graduated from Brazosport HS where she played drums in the band. Helen later moved to Freeport where she worked as a telephone operator. It was there that she met her future husband, Truman Nygard. After they were married, she moved to El Campo, where her two children, Denise and Mark, were later born. In 1966, the family moved to Bay City due to Truman’s job transfer. She lived in Bay City and was a member of this church for over 50 years.

Helen taught special needs students at the Edith Armstrong Center and also at the Hillard School. She was thrilled whenever she crossed paths with any of her former students. She later became the attendance clerk at Tenie Holmes School. After retiring, she volunteered as a Pink Lady at the hospital for many years.

Sadly, Truman passed away in 2002 after nearly 50 years of marriage. She struggled for many years over this loss. She remained very close with Truman’s sisters, Jewel-Deen House and Lavonne Bergstrom and their loving families. Thankfully, she was able to spend a memorable Thanksgiving Day with many of them this past year. Christmas Eve gathering were always special to her. Spending any time with family was very important to her. The Christmas turkey was never ready on time and this became part of the tradition. Any time spent with her grandchildren, Lauren and Alec, was priceless to her. She loved to make people laugh such as her alligator eyes or belief that she could actually speak Spanish.

She was actually a great cook, especially her fried chicken, chocolate pie, and dewberry cobbler. A Sunday roast was another tradition. She loved to travel and her fondest memories were adventures with Truman, her sister Betty Sue and her husband Mitch. She loved to talk about their trips together all over the U.S. She tolerated the annual family trip to the Frio River with family and friends. Even though it was hot, no A/C, and she had to spend too much time in a cramped kitchen, she did it for her family. For about 30 years, we heard the story that she hit a rock while tubing and that it still hurt sometimes.

Helen loved her flowerbeds and plants. Ironically, the hospice where she spent her final days had a beautiful garden with almost all of her favorite plants. Azaleas, camellias, and amaryllis were everywhere. The same trees as well; live oak, pecan, magnolia, pine, and even pink magnolias—just not enough sunlight for any roses or daylilies that she also loved.

She was a collector (hoarder would be a bit harsh) of treasures from auctions, estate sales, and garage sales. She rarely threw away any of these prized possessions. She loved her bridge club friends and the lifelong relations that developed. She enjoyed the Hallmark Channel and watched many of the same shows repeatedly. She also enjoyed playing the slot machines and occasionally shared her winnings. She looked forward to dinners with her friends at El Zarape, Dairy Queen and others, but always had to be home before dark. She loved her dogs and cats over the years and spoiled each and every one of them.

She frequently said she had the best neighbors in the world. For years, their interaction was the highlight of her day. The family would like to thank her caregivers for their compassionate care during her sometimes difficult last few months. The care proved by Houston Hospice in her final days was priceless.

Helen was special. She was always a giver and never a taker. May she receive the thoughts and actions she always offered. She was loved and will be greatly missed. Thanks for joining us today and try to remember her with a smile!

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Truman and her brothers Bobbie, Harry, and Gene Hart. She is survived by her daughter Denise of Houston, her son Mark and grandchildren Lauren and Alec Nygard, all of Richmond. She is also survived by her sister Betty Sue and husband Lewis Mitchell of Arizona and sister-in-law Louise Hart of Brazoria. Survivors also include Truman's two sisters, Jewel-Deen House and Lavonne Bergstrom both of El Campo. She loved and was very proud of the nieces and nephews she leaves behind.

In lieu of flowers or plants, please consider a donation to the Houston Hospice  at www.houstonhospice.org or the pet-related charity of your choice.

Visitation will be held at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City on Thursday February 28 from 5-7 pm. Graveside services will be 10am Friday March 1, 2019 at Garden of Memories Cemetery in El Campo. Memorial services will be held at St. Peter Lutheran Church Bay City, at 2pm Friday March 1. A reception will follow at the church.
