Anton Nemec

This whole community was saddened at the passing last Friday morning of young Anton Nemec, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Nemec, his death occurring at Matagorda County General Hospital where he had been taken several days before for treatment. All that skill and loving hands could do for his recovery were of no avail. The funeral services were held at St. Peter’s Catholic church in Blessing, Monday at ten o’clock, with interment in the cemetery there, Triska Funeral Home of El Campo in charge. The very large attendance and many lovely floral offerings bore testimony to the esteem in which this family are held not only in this, but other communities. Sarah E. Newton

Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Buckner Newton, who died at her home in this city Sunday morning February 14, was born in Dubach, La., March 17, 1894. At the age of 10 years she was converted and became a member of the Baptist Church. In 1916 she was married to Mr. H. T. Newton and spent the next several years in Louisiana and Arkansas. In 1929 they, with their family, came to Texas and in 1937 they moved to Palacios where they made their home since that time.

Mrs. Newton had been from her girlhood days quite active in her Church and her illness in recent years was a great disappointment to her because she could no longer be among the leaders in the work of the Kingdom. In the days before her marriage she took the leadership in organizing a Mission Sunday School in the sawmill town where she lived at the time and then again she and her husband saw the need for such a Sunday School in an oilfield town and set about to do the needed task and out of this Mission came the Upland Baptist Church near El Dorado, Arkansas. Where ever Mrs. Newton lived she had been vitally concerned in the religious life of the community. She gave deep thought and much planning to Mission Sunday Schools here in our city having discussed these matters with her pastors from time to time, but due to failing health was never able to lead out with the visions that the felt in her heart.

She is survived by her two sisters; Mrs. H. J. Williams of Junction City, Ark., and Mrs. W. A. Colvin of Shreveport, La., her husband, Mr. H. T. Newton of Palacios, and her five children, Mrs. R. O. Sullivan of Houston, Tolbert Newton of the Air Service located somewhere in the Caribbean Sea, Mrs. L. L. Jackson of Mather Field, Calif., and Mira Jean and Janice Newton of our city. There are also three grandchildren who join with these and other relatives and friends to mourn her going.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Palacios Funeral Home conducted by Rev. L. W. Crouch. Burial was in Palacios Cemetery.

Palacios Young Man Dies Friday – Marion Jesse Noble

Again we are called upon to chronicle the death of one of our young people, this time that of a young man who had not quite reached the two score years, that period of life so dear to us all, just when we are beginning to reach out for the things that are to make our journey on this earth worth while, so it seems.

The subject of this sketch, Marion Jesse Noble, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Noble, was born in Jackson County, Texas, on August 3, 1908, and died at the home of his parents, in this city, Friday, May 25, 1928. “Shorty,” as he was familiarly known by his friends and associates, moved to Palacios in early life and attended school here. He was a regular attendant of the Presbyterian Sunday School and united with this church a few years ago. He was ambitious and energetic, always busy at something and has assisted at the Bay Chevrolet Company most of the time during the past year.

He was quiet and unassuming, forming few close friends, but to those he remained loyal unto death and they to him, as was demonstrated by his two pals, one remaining at his bedside from the time he was stricken until death relieved his suffering, the other coming 350 miles to see him, but arrived too late to see him in life.

A few weeks ago he was stricken with the flu, and had not recovered from the effects of it when he had a slight attack of ptomaine poisoning, but seemed to be very much better and was thought to be about well, and when the news was brought to town early Friday morning that he had suffered a stroke of paralysis and was not expected to live, it was a great shock. All that medical skill, careful nursing and tender care by loved ones, could do was done for him, but without avail and at five o’clock on that afternoon he passed into that sleep from which no one awakens.

Simple but impressive funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock conducted by Rev. G. R. Gillespie, after which the remains were taken to the Palacios cemetery and placed in Mother Earth to await the Resurrection Morn.

Besides the heartbroken parents, four brothers and four sisters are left to mourn his early demise and to whom the entire community extends sympathy.

The brothers and sisters here to attend the funeral were, J. D. Noble and wife, Willie C. Noble and family and E. M. Noble, all of Victoria; Mrs. Edwards and family, Francitas; Mrs. T. M. Dodd and two children of Orange, and Mrs. Harold Davis, of San Antonio.

She was a regular attendant of Sunday School and Church services and took a deep interest in the work of the Women’s Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband on March 9, 1934, and three sons, two dying in infancy and the other, Marion J. Noble, who died in Palacios on May 25, 1928.
