Two Camp Hulen soldiers lost their lives early Sunday morning as they neared the comparative safety of the camp after spending the night evacuating civilians endangered by the storm and rising waters of the tidal wave which caused so much damage to the Matagorda Bay area of the Texas coast. Sgt. Earle E. McGregor, 25, formerly of Benton, Ky., and Cpl. Robert A. Hefley, 19, of Pasadena, Calif., were apparently on their way back to camp after making two and possibly three trips to El Campo and Wharton with people driven from the homes by the storm when the truck ran off the highway on the north side in the second draw west of town. According to unofficial reports received by Justice of the Peace G. R. Halliday, the truck was hauled in by some unidentified soldier and left at the motor pool where it was found when officials began checking trucks which had been on duty the preceding night. A subsequent check showed that Sgt. McGregor and Cpl. Hefley were also missing. A search for the missing men disclosed their bodies, one about 200 yards north of the highway lying in about 10 inches of water and the other about 100 yards farther floating in about two feet of water. Apparently they had left their truck when it ran off the highway and were swept off the road to their deaths. How they were able to pass the first draw which, it is presumed was already flooded, is unknown. Approximate time of their drowning was placed by medical examiners, according to the death certificates, at 5:00 a. m. Corporal Hefley is reported to have purchased a life insurance policy less than 30 days prior to his death. Both bodies were shipped to their respective homes as soon as arrangements could be made. Sergeant McGregor’s next of kin was listed as Merman O. McGregor, father, of Benton, Ky., and that of Corporal Hefley, as Alex H. Hefley, father, of Pasadena, Calif.
