Born in Bangor Maine, born April 21, 1958, to Priscilla and Alfred Merritt. He passed away at age 56, on February 13, 2015. Beloved husband and father, passed on to be one of Gods Angels. He is survived by his loving wife, Stephanie, of 36 years; and daughter, Adrienne Merritt. He was preceded in death by siblings, Cathy Martin, Susan Hefner, Glenda Merritt, Ralph Merritt; and both his parents, Alfred and Priscilla Merritt. Larry fought valiantly with cancer, that started in 2005, and was officially diagnosed as sarcoma, in 2006. He went 4 1/2 years cancer free, before it returned a total of 9 times, in the 10 years he fought. He lost his leg above the knee and it still returned finally in both lungs. He survived just under 4 months, after the last diagnosis. He died peacefully in his sleep beside his wife, and did not suffer, and was able to go to live with our Lord and Savior. He was dearly loved by his family and thought of as a source of strength and a friend to all, especially those he worked with at STPNOC Energy Company. Larry loved his job, and during the 10 year battle, even went in to work on chemo days, earlier than doctors wanted, after surgeries and with his prosthetic leg. He was always willing to lend a hand to those in need, and comments heard after his death were, “he was one in a million,” “a gentle loving soul,” and “a caring and loving man”. He loved his wife and daughter the most, who were what kept him going during the 10 year fight. He leaves a huge void in all our lives and will be sorely missed by all. A memorial service will be on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at 10 a.m., at the First Baptist Church, 2321 Avenue F, Bay City TX 77414, with refreshments immediately following.

Lillian Cole Milberger was born January 12, 1924 in Bay City, Texas, to David William Cole and Lillian Lofton Cole. She passed away Wednesday, October 8, 2014. Just two days after her sixteenth birthday, Lillian Cole married FJ Milberger in 1940, a marriage that would last almost 70 years, until FJ’s passing, in 2009. On their Honeymoon Night, they made it as far as Wharton, Texas, spending the night in The Tee Pee Motel. To this marriage were born four children - Mary Ellen, Wayne, Arthur, and Bryan. Like many young married women, Lillian’s husband went off to World War II, landing in Normandy, France on D-17. Meanwhile, back in Bay City, Lillian was keeping busy with a newborn, knitting and selling homemade baby items to local merchants. Lillian Cole Milberger always had a great entrepreneurial spirit, and upon FJ’s return from the War, the couple partnered up and began what was to become one of the most successful sod farming operations in the United States. During the sod farm start-up, Lillian operated a caged-hen egg laying operation, while FJ worked full-time at the Texas Bulk Company, until they could purchase more land for their farms. A devout Catholic, Lillian had a regular presence at Holy Cross Catholic Church, where she was a member of both The Catholic Daughters and The Altar Society. Lillian made sure all four of her children received a religious education, and sent each of her clan to Holy Cross Catholic School. In those days, the Fighting Eagles actually went through the 8th grade! Lillian learned to cook from one of the best…Eleanor Knebel. They both cooked turkeys for the inaugural Turkey Church Dinner held at Holy Cross! Lifelong friends, Eleanor and her husband, George, also stood in as witnesses for Lillian and FJ’s marriage ceremony. Many a Sunday feast was held at Lillian’s home after church, and usually Father CJ Martin was front and center, as he could not resist her fine cooking! Generations later, albeit children or grandchildren, no one could step into Lillian’s kitchen without her making you an overflowing plate (followed by seconds & thirds) of the daily feast, prepared with pure love. Although family and business were Lillian’s chief passions, she and FJ did their share of socializing. This included some occasional dancing, which they enjoyed, but they were also an impressive duo to watch! They also shared a love for a good game of 42 with friends. Nearly seventy years of marriage built on love, church, and family created a wonderful life that touched many hearts and souls. Lillian possessed a beautiful soul, and had one of the most generous hearts anywhere, as witnessed by countless friends, family, and employees. Everyone came first with Lillian, for a beautiful ninety plus years. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ellen Milberger of Bay City; her sons, Francis Wayne Milberger and wife Carol of Kerrville, Arthur Joseph Milberger and wife Sue of Bay City, and Bryan Michael Milberger and wife Theresa of Bay City; her grandchildren, Kathryn Clare McMillan Peebles, Sara Christine Milberger Freudensprung, Michelle Nicole Milberger, Jeffrey Wayne Milberger, Regay Sue Milberger Hildreth, Lesley Nicole Milberger Shoaf, Whitney Francis Milberger-Laird, Rachel Michelle Milberger, Thomas Joseph Milberger, Ashley Lillian Milberger, Erin Davis and Daniel Davis; her great-grandchildren, Julia Marie Peebles, Taylor Leigh Peebles, John McMillan Peebles, David Scott Peebles, Audrey Sue Hildreth, James Arthur Hildreth, Cole Michael Shoaf, Eric Joseph Shoaf, Wyatt Arthur Laird, Jase Bryan Vivona, Abigail Grace Freudensprung, Audrey Lee Freudensprung; her sisters Annie Lee Jones and Dorothy Dietrich (Hadden); and by her brother, Rosser Cole (Ada). She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Joseph (FJ) Milberger; her parents, David William Cole and Lillian Lofton Cole; her sister, Elizabeth Burkhardt; her brothers, William Cole, Jenoye Cole, Jack Cole, John Cole, Waddie Cole, and David William Cole Jr. The family will receive friends and relatives from 5 p.m., until 7 p.m., Sunday, October 12, 2014, with a rosary being recited at 6 p.m., at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, Bay City, Texas. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, October 13, 2014 at Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. Greg Korenek officiating. Pallbearers will be, Roy Cole, Richard Rooth, Hadden Dietrich Jr., Arthur Lawrence, George Knebel Jr., Arthur “Ozzie” Arnold, Victor Barrea, and Travis Hicks. Honorary Bearers will be, Cole Dietrich, Hadden Dietrich Sr., R.M Cole (Rosser) and James Svetlik. Please make memorial donations in her name to Holy Cross School Foundation, P.O. Box 571, Bay City, TX 77404-0571. Any condolence messages may be sent to Mary Ellen Milberger, P.O. Box 469, Bay City, TX 77404-0469 or by visiting www.taylorbros.net. BAY CITY - Rosa Zarate Morales, 69, of
Bay City, died Monday, April 5, 2004. |
Smokey Edward Morris was born to Nina Mae Morris and Edward O. Morris on October 3, 1944 at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. He passed away peacefully at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston on December 31st and was laid to rest at the Veterans Cemetery in Houston.
The first of four children, he was going into the 7th grade when his father retired from the Army and the family moved from San Antonio to Palacios. He was in the Boy Scout Troop 47M and got to know Dr. J.C. White, the scoutmaster. He learned a lot of things from him. He played centerfield on the Red Sox Little League team and made the All-Stars. He also played football when he was in Palacios Junior High School. He had different jobs during that time and when he was in high school, working for Helen Ward at the Continental Bus station, for Mr. and Mrs. Davis at the Hollywood Theater (then it cost 20 cents for a kid under 12 to get in to see the show), for Anna Lee and Irving Peterson at Peterson’s Restaurant, Curtis Food Market, and for Boaz Construction Company as a carpenter’s helper.
He wanted to get out and see some of the world, so he and Fortune Ross enlisted in the Navy under the “buddy plan.” As soon as he got to the in-processing station at San Diego, California, the Navy detailed him as a sonar man. After basic training, he went to school for 48 weeks to study electronics, to sonar school, and then on to Newport, Rhode Island to the Naval Warfare School. He was the 21st guy detailed to a new state-of-the-art destroyer escort being built named the USS Conyngham, that was commissioned on July 13, 1963 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He then set sail for the shakedown cruise at Guantanamo, Cuba – that was where they tested out all the equipment on board to make sure that everything worked right: the sonar, guns, anti-submarine weapons and anything else they needed to. They were down there on November 22, 1963 when President John F. Kennedy was killed. They sailed back to their home port of Norfolk, Virginia and then to the Mediterranean for a six month cruise. During the next four years, they went back to the “Med” three more times; he visited France, Tunisia, the Rock of Gibraltar, Italy Greece, and Mallorca, Beirut, Lebanon – which he considered one of the nicest places and a beautiful city. He was on his fourth Med cruise when it was time for him to get out of the Navy. They flew him from Naples, Italy to Rhoda, Spain and on back to Norfolk where he was mustered out. During that time, he had served as a sonar man and reached the grade of STG3/E4.
After his service in the Navy he returned to civilian life, got a job working at ALCOA as a gas-engine apprentice, and married Jackie Bullington. They moved to Bay City where he worked at Central Power & Light. After he and Jackie divorced, he attended East Texas State University for a time then in March 1969 married Kay Gary, his childhood sweetheart from El Campo. They moved back to Houston and he went to work for Western Electric again, then for the Arab American Oil Company (ARAMCO) in Houston, and still later for the Phillips 66 company. He, along with his brother Allen, endowed the Edward O. Morris Scholarship in honor of their father and that provides a scholarship each year to a student graduating from Palacios High School.
An avid reader, he loved books and had his own library of some of the classical works. As a movie and sports enthusiast, he kept up with a plethora of not only the movies that were popular, both past and current, but also the various sports teams – and was always ready to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the various clubs. With a mind that grasped a wide variety of information, he was eager to drop the latest bit of data on you and would discuss politics with little prompting.
He loved not only his cherished wife, family, and friends, but also the kids in his neighborhood, many of whom were being raised without a father. Indeed, one time when he had a Suburban-full of kids that he was taking to get ice cream in downtown Houston, a guy pulled up next to him; noticing that there were only two kids in the car who were white, he humorously yelled out, “Are all of those kids yours?” Smokey leaned out the window and fixing the other driver with a serious look replied, “You bet they are!” Many of those same kids – now adults – later attended his graveside service; Daniel Guerrero spoke emotionally at both Kay’s and Smokey’s funerals of his life growing up as one of their “kids.” The advice he invariably gave any of his “kids” was, “Stay in school and graduate from High School.”; “Be patient”; and “Live one day at a time.” His life is summarized in the chapter “Smokey the Bear” in the book Coming Home.
He had multiple medical problems spanning forty years and was hospitalized intermittently in Hermann Hospital, Ben Taub Hospital and finally at the Michael E. DeBakey Veteran’s Medical Center – where he received great care and was nursed by his daughter Jenna and son David. He finally succumbed to the accumulated effects of his illnesses there.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Barbara Kay Gary, parents Nina Mae Morris and Edward O. Morris, four aunts and his two uncles.
He is survived by his family: brothers, Allen and Terry Morris, Sister Mitzi Morris-MacPhee, mother in-law Roma Gary, brother-in-law James Lee Gary, children and their spouses Kelly and Harold Swafford, David and Teresa Morris, Jenna and Miguel Ortiz, and niece Jamie Lee Gary. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Hali Elizabeth Swafford; Briana Alexis, Olivia Rose, Eric Matthew, and Grace Lily Morris; and Emilia Mae, Roma Kay, and Ava Rae Ortiz.
He may be gone –
but he is definitely not forgotten. The family thanks all of you for
your prayers, concern, and expressions of condolence. Memorials may
be sent to the Edward O. Morris Scholarship Endowment Fund in care
of the Palacios Area Fund, 454 B Main Street, Palacios, Texas 77465. Palacios Beacon, April 29, 2015
